Write up from the Museum:
Between nightmares turned into images and terrifying visions of Satan, landscapes form the supposed haven of peace in the exhibition "Black Romanticism. Von Goya bis Max Ernst". A fallacy. The adrenaline drops, but the pulse rate remains. With his "Procession in the Fog", Ernst Ferdinand Oehme created a landscape that does not need any creepy creatures to create anxiety and unease – a true landscape thriller. Subtly, its atmospheric mood takes hold of our minds, making us anxious and leaving us with a feeling of uncertainty. But a glimmer of hope remains. Our Picture of the Month shows just how gloomy the romantic nature can be. This painting has one of those things that makes paintings really worth it - the ability to have impossible things pictured to achieve the effect you want.
The cross at the head of the procession would never be visible in this view. The man carrying it (or next to it - it's unclear) is shrouded in fog and barely perceptible except as a vague shape - but his cross is clearly visible. Impossible in reality. Posted by: t-bird at January 16, 2024 09:48 AM (oVsz5) ++++ mid-15c., nebule "a cloud, mist," from Latin nebula, plural nebulae, "mist, vapor, fog, smoke, exhalation," figuratively "darkness, obscurity," from PIE root *nebh- "cloud." Re-borrowed from Latin 1660s in sense of "cataracts in the eye;" astronomical meaning "luminous cloud-like patch in the heavens" is from c. 1730. Assuming that the German word has the same meaning as the Latin root used for "Nebula," that seems reasonable... Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at January 16, 2024 09:51 AM (C19Uv) 104

When all the sane people have left the Repubican party, this is the result you get. Today's GOP is a coalition of racists, hate-mongers, christian fundamentalists and greedy corporations. Trump represents their interests. There is an undercurrent here that no one seems to see. The prepper, end of days, evangelist, mormon, gun-hoarding, I-meet-Jesus-at-the-laundromat types have melded in common cause and they have multiplied throughout the midwest and west while we weren't looking. She contends in a book that trump raped her in 1995. He said she is lying. It is beyond the statute of limitations, so there can be no criminal investigation. She wants to sue for defamation, but can't because there is no proof he raped her. The state legislature carves out a 1 year exemption specifically for carroll to sue civilly. She sues in civil court where the definition of victory is "preponderance of evidence" and wins. Posted by: Huck Follywood at January 16, 2024 09:58 AM (eXDfp) ++++ My guess is that it means "Protestant," but I am not sure. Per "encyclopedia.com:" Denominationalism is one of the least understood aspects of Protestantism. In both popular usage and dictionary definition, denominationalism is commonly equated with sectarianism. This is a strange reversal in meaning, for in origin and intention the concept of denominationalism was the opposite of sectarianism. ... A sect by definition is exclusive. It claims the authority of Christ for itself alone, whereas the word denomination was adopted as a neutral and nonjudgmental term that implied that the group referred to was but one member, denominated by a particular name, of a larger group to which other Protestant denominations belonged. ... So Trump will apparently usher in a non-sectarian Protestant theocracy. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at January 16, 2024 10:02 AM (C19Uv) 157

If the artist was trying to capture a mood, he succeeded. The fog creates a indistinct world for the monks to traverse as they fade into it. You can feel the moist chill and imagine the droplets forming on their robes. And it is quiet, very quiet. The old monument on the right adds to the solemn feeling and is the one solid point in the image, a nice contrast with the soft look of the rest of the painting. I love the way the trees in the left background could be seen as clouds. There is a timeless, perhaps eternal, sense of the activity.

Posted by: Montec at January 16, 2024 10:06 AM (8kRtb) ++++ Because your income isn't fixed. It can vary, and you might earn more next year. With a true fixed income, that is not true. Adjusted pension schemes like Social Security are not really fixed-income, since those payments can (and do) go up with inflation. Annuities and similar, however, are actually fixed. Posted by: Montec at January 16, 2024 10:09 AM (8kRtb) ---- Your salary isn't "fixed" because through the normal course of being employed you should, theoretically, be increasing your knowledge, skills, experience and therefore earning power and salary every year you're in the workforce. Mark it down in this thread if you haven't already. If an (R) is allowed to be president, it will be Nikki. And it's likely the plan so that the WEF / Ukraine long-term goals can be achieved and it can be called bi-partisan.
We saw it in 2020. Anyone who is allowed to take office won't be the person who is interested in helping Americans. If it happens that's fine, but America isn't the primary interest of the office and the government. (LifeSiteNews) — The U.S. State Department under the Biden administration is training taxpayer-funded school teachers to “inoculate” them against conservative ideas, according to a report by the Media Research Center (MRC).
Part one of the report, published on January 9, concerns a series of State Department seminars coordinated by the University of Rhode Island’s Media Education Lab, using curriculum developed by the university’s German counterpart, the University of Würzburg, from June 2021 to April 2022. The virtual sessions, broadcast from Würzburg, taught American educators a distinctly European conception of “media literacy,” which included promoting “media bias” rating firm Ad Fontes Media, which MRC has previously reported to have a strong bias in favor of left-wing media, and NewsGuard, a web browser extension that supposedly identifies untrustworthy websites, but which LifeSiteNews has caught in the past attaching false and biased “fact checks” to valid stories. *snip* Posted by: Chuck Martel at January 16, 2024 10:44 AM (fs1hN) 377
The seminars promoted the Data Detox Kit “misinformation”-spotting curriculum, which identifies “anti-vaccination” views and “climate change denialism” as “conspiracy theories” and discourages use of the term “fake news,” as well as notorious left-wing “fact-checking” outlets Snopes and PolitiFact.
They also promoted the “Glass Room” curriculum, which teaches about the “problem of scaling freedom of expression,” frames it as a problem that individuals leave Facebook and YouTube for social platforms where content is less regulated, laments that “allow[ing] content to flow freely and far” creates a “path for misinformation,” and even perpetuates actual misinformation, including denial of the long-since acknowledged “lab leak” theory of COVID-19’s origins and false accusations that former President Donald Trump had colluded with the Russian government to steal the 2016 presidential election. They will, in all seriousness, make both of them an offer they can't refuse. Posted by: Archimedes at January 16, 2024 10:56 AM (CsUN+) 436
428 I didn't find Capshaw's character nearly as annoying as Short Round. Her boobs were a mitigating factor for me.

Being overseas during the Star Wars thing I only caught up with it in the 90s. The first two movies were interesting. Then in was midgets in furry suits with zippers up the back from then on. It pretty much sucked. Posted by: Pudinhead at January 16, 2024 10:49 AM (LVNnd) Is that really any way to talk about Ace? Well, No. 2 did have Kate Capshaw. And the usual great John Williams score.
But yeah... Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at January 16, 2024 10:52 AM (9yWhg) #2 would of been better if she had just kept her mouth shut. Gawd! The catterwhalling! Made the whole.movie a #2. Posted by: Diogenes at January 16, 2024 10:56 AM (W/lyH) 439

Posted by: Pudinhead at January 16, 2024 10:49 AM (LVNnd) Yeah, I don't think that will be a problem if they decide to jettison Joe. -------------- How do you jettison Joe and ignore Kamala? Where do you go for Joe's replacement? Posted by: Pudinhead at January 16, 2024 10:53 AM (LVNnd) I don't think Kamala wants to be president and I don't think anyone wants her to be president. She's disappeared. If they decide to ditch Joe, they'll put on a full court media blitz about his corruption. He'll "decide" to drop out to spend time with his family. Kamala will be usurped by Newsom...somehow. Look, I don't have this all 100% but there's no way Kamala will be the nominee. It'll either be Joe or Gavin. I've hated on No. 2 since the day i saw it in the theater. Kate Capshaw's squeal8ng aned screaming was what did it for me. Smash was watching it a few evenenings ago, and I simply imagined a good pr0n0 vid to go with the squeals and screams. Made it a much more enjoyable movie for me.
Posted by: BifBewalski at January 16, 2024 *** I recall very little about it, except for the dinner scene where Indy shows up in sport coat, tie, and glasses. Startling, and a good character moment. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 16, 2024 10:58 AM (J2vNu) 447

The situation in the painting would be ideal if I absolutely had to be in a procession. With that ground fog, I could hang back and relax, or sneak a bite to eat, and nobody the wiser.
