Top Story

  • FAQ to the Future: How we defeated deepfakes. (MSN / LA Times) (lolcow division)

Apart from the obvious failure - the article is actually titled "An FAQ from the future" - and the manifold technical absurdities, the glorious idea promoted by the article is a digital Ministry of Truth:
The newest phones, tablets, cameras, recorders and desktop computers all include software that automatically inserts the FACStamp code into every piece of visual or audio content as it's captured, before any AI modification can be applied. This proves that the image, sound or video was not generated by AI. You can also download the FAC app, which does the same for older equipment. The FACStamp is what technologists call "fragile": The first time an image, video or audio file is falsified by AI, the stamp disappears.
This of course is totally voluntary - for about five minutes:
A bipartisan group of senators and House members plans to introduce the Right to Reality Act when the next Congress opens in January 2029. It will mandate the use of FACStamps in multiple sectors, including local government, shopping sites and investment and real estate offerings. Counterfeiting a FACStamp would become a criminal offense. Polling indicates widespread public support for the act, and the FAC Alliance has already begun a branding campaign.
Scratch a journalist, find a fascist.

    Never fails.

Tech News

  • Framework's accountant got phished. (Hot Hardware)

If you have an open pre-order for a Framework laptop, be wary of emails purporting to be from Framework asking for money. The data leak was caught in half an hour and if you were on the list you've probably already received an email from Framework telling you to be wary of emails from Framework.

  • A ship carrying silverware has sailed. (DPL Docs)

The D programming language was created in 2001 as a successor to C that did things right, producing simple elegant code like this:

     result = reduce!((a, b) => (b <= pivot) ? a + b : a)(chain(a1, a2));

No, I have no idea what that does either.

Anyway, after spending 21 of those 22 years fighting among themselves (as far as I can tell) the D community has split and created OpenD (pronounced OpenD) as an open version of D.

  • Yes, there's not much news today. How could you tell?

  • Penrose allows you to create diagrams just by typing in text. (Penrose)

The text is a program that tells Penrose what to draw, but still, it's pretty neat. Oversold, but neat. And free.

  • IO Crest has a six-port version of their four-port 2.5Gb Ethernet card. (Serve the Home)

Great if you want to build a home datacenter and need multiple network segments with different routing and filtering rules and don't for some reason want to go with second-hand Cisco gear.

  • Tech layoffs are a thing of the past, part eleventy: Google's latest round of layoffs are just the beginning. (The Verge) (archive site)
Since 12,000 people were axed a year ago, smaller layoffs have continued to roll through the sprawling conglomerate at a steady clip, creating a feeling of unease. Not all of these prior cuts have been covered publically [sic>, such as a roughly 10 percent downsizing of the public policy group in mid November.
Only 10%? Would anybody notice if you fired the entire public policy group?

Google lost its way in 2014, and there's no sign that it will ever find it again.

Disclaimer: Yes, I am still salty about the Nexus 7. How could you tell?

19 MLK Day is like every other Monday for me but with less traffic. Thankfully the bars are open and there will be football in the afternoon and evening.

I am shocked that some lunatic left-winger hasn't gone off the deep end complaining that the Republicans are holding their caucus on MLK Day which is obviously racist.

24 Evening and morning to all the insomaniacals! We spent the day out yesterday, and you'd have thought I'd have slept much later today. Nope -- but six hours is pretty darn good.

'Tis 53 F. here. It hit 68 yesterday afternoon. Hard to believe it's supposed to get bitterly cold (for here) tonight. I'll work out today and wash the car, hit the grocery for a couple of things, do my usual Sunday chores, and settle in under my blankets tonight.

28 25 Pixy, what are your thoughts on a proper wattage for a desktop power supply? I am leaning towards 750W over the 450W range.

750W is a good safe size that will handle most CPUs and graphics cards. Unless you're planning to run a 14900KS and an overclocked 4090, in which case there is no safe size.

We're havin' a heat wave
A tropical heat wave...

High of 12F today. (Official low last night was -10. No wonder this house got so cold! Had to crank the pellet stove up *and* turn on oven for a while)

Hoping for high of 18F tomorrow. Jeez, I hope the streets thaw out. So very slippery Saturday afternoon; packed snow & ice, too cold for salt to do any good.

37 The town of Atlantic Beach prohibits all home construction work on federal holidays. So, I am off today and slept in till 430. Another neat thing Atlantic Beach does is prohibit all street parking from 5/1 till 9/15 to keep beach goers away. If you don’t belong to a beach club or live in the town, there is no place to park.

87 Journalism has always had an "editorial" function at its core. The idea that they, out of necessity, must decide what is news and what isn't. At some point, the question "Is this a thing we want to talk about in our paper" became "is this a thing we want society to read about". The question "is this a true thing that actually happened" mutated into the naked assertion "this thing happened because we say it did".

As near as i can tell, 100% of what is called The News is even worse than so called Yellow Journalism. It's flat out fiction.

Even the worst 20th c. totalitarian propagandists made at least some effort to make their reporting comport with reality, however malevolent, skewed, and misleading they may have been.

"My sister's tarded. She's a pilot now."

Also regarding the psychiatric aspect: One of the prevailing theories is that the pilot of MH370 depressurized the cabin, killed everyone and then flew the plane south into the Indian Ocean to make them all vanish. So that seems like a great idea.

I'm encouraged by the overwhelming response by Catholic clergy to the weird, heretical and incoherent letter about blessings to "irregular" (read: sinful) couples. "Nice" Christianity has failed. Good riddens.

Apparently the Catholic bishops of Africa contacted Pope Francis, told him "nope, can't do this this," and his response was "Oh, okay." Then entire conference of bishops of Africa issued their letter of refusal citing Pope Francis's approval of their refusal!

Added to that, Cardinal Sarah, condemned Fiducia Supplicans as containing heresy. It will be interesting to see if Pope Francis realizes that he has undercut his own authority.

Let us pray that it is God's will that the next Pontiff is an African bishop.

94 Did you think, like I did, that the story on the FAA hiring the "severely disabled" as their newest kink couldn't be real? It must be a parody, I thought!

Think again.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is actively recruiting workers who suffer "severe intellectual" disabilities, psychiatric problems and other mental and physical conditions under a diversity and inclusion hiring initiative spelled out on the agency's website.

"Targeted disabilities are those disabilities that the Federal government, as a matter of policy, has identified for special emphasis in recruitment and hiring," the FAA's website states.

"They include hearing, vision, missing extremities, partial paralysis, complete paralysis, epilepsy, severe intellectual disability, psychiatric disability and dwarfism."

The initiative is part of the FAA's "Diversity and Inclusion" hiring plan, which says "diversity is integral to achieving FAA's mission of ensuring safe and efficient travel across our nation and beyond."

105 There could maybe sort of kind of be something to salvage from the fake pope's musings. I'd rather see a same sex couple that does a good job of living in marital harmony and love and generally being good, than a normal couple who treat each other like shit, abuse their children, lie to and bilk the rest of their family, and raise a whole brood of little godless shitbag children. But hooray, they fuck properly so they're going to heaven. Bullshit. It's always a good idea to consider the beams and motes. Don't worry about what these other people are doing, get your own house in order and mind your own business. No one is better than anyone else just because their sins are different.

I'm sure that likely wasn't the thrust of Frankie's argument though.

179 24000 HIV patients in Cali:

They claim that Gilead should have launched sooner an alternative HIV treatment that carries fewer bone and kidney side effects. They say Gilead delayed developing the new drug to maximize profits from its other HIV medication. Gilead disputes these claims and says it wasn’t clear from its early studies that the new drug would be safer or more effective.

184 Austin went into the hospital on Dec 21 to have his prostate removed, and then he was released on Dec 22.

No one knew that either.

His Jan 1 hospitalization was reported as "prostate surgery", but that was done ten days prior. No one really knows why he was admitted on Jan 1, or why he still there after two weeks.

206 51 38 What happened with the Nexus 7?

There was a mediocre model in 2012, then a good one in 2013.

Then they just forgot about it.

----------
I had the 2012 model. Maybe mediocre is accurate, but I really liked it... until the first major Android version update rendered it almost unusable.

I waited for a long time before I realized there wouldn't be another follow up, at which point I did something stupid and bought a Dell x86 android tablet (which promptly got zero support).

My takeaway is Lenovo or Samsung for tabs, ARM only.
