  • Why is my LG washing machine downloading 3.7GB of data a day? (Twitter)

This is rather like giving your eight year old your credit card details and wondering why your house is full of Lego. Why did you do that if you didn't want that result?

And also like it in that you can't remove the WiFi settings from your LG washing machine once it's been set.

    So don't do that.

(I have an LG washing machine. It has WiFi. Its total downloads to date are zero.)

Tech News

  • Bought a couple of Beelink mini-PCs on sale - the 5560U model. I have memory and SSDs sitting around that I can use in them, and the entry level model with 8GB RAM and a 500GB SSD was pretty cheap. Their cheapest 5560U model is $289 on Amazon US right now, but the price I paid was closer to $200. They were a little cheaper on Black Friday, but I missed that sale and I've been regretting it, so I grabbed them this time.

Plan is to run Linux on them so I don't have to mess around with Windows 11's problems with virtualisation anymore.

  • I also bought a new breadmaker. I threw out the old one when I moved, since it had been sitting in the cupboard unused for about ten years after I was diagnosed with celiac disease.

And there are plenty of gluten-free bread mixes available now, right?

    ...

Two. There are two. At least, available locally.

I can get gluten-free flour for a quarter the price I pay for gluten-free bread, though, and yeast is yeast. I used to love experimenting with different types of bread, and I'd like to do that again.

  • Those new desktop APUs from AMD - what they call their CPUs with advanced integrated graphics - come with a catch. (WCCFTech)

    Two catches. Three catches.

First, there's no PCIe 5, since they're laptop chips and PCIe 5 eats power. PCIe 5 isn't all that much use though; graphics cards don't use it at all, and the SSDs that do are expensive and run hot.

Second, there are fewer PCIe 4 lanes, so if you get the 8600G or 8700G you can only have 8 lanes to your graphics card. Still, that's enough for most tasks, and if you end up wanting more performance you can upgrade to something like a 7900 while keeping your motherboard, memory, and so on.

Third, if you get the low-end 8300G or 8500G chips, you only get 4 lanes to your graphics card, and 2 to your SSD. That's not good. Avoid those.

The 8500G looks to have essentially the same specs as the 8600G at $50 less, but longer term you might regret it.

  • The best of CES. (The Verge)

Any other year these wouldn't even have rated a nomination, much less an award. They'd be in the "also appearing" wrap-up that nobody bothered to read.

  • The creator economy is ready for a workers' movement. (Tech Crunch)

    We'll go on strike!

That's right! You'll have a national TikTok and Instagram influencer strike on your hands!

    And whom will that inconvenience?

  • The Funimation dub for Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid is infamously awful - or should I say AWFL - not so much for the voice acting as for the translation, which inserts the usual incoherent grab bag of left-wing complaints where they don't belong. (Not that they belong anywhere.)

So a fan redubbed it with a proper translation using AI. (Niche Gamer)

The AI voice acting is... Not good... But in that it is indistinguishable from the average anime dub.

Looks like an entire useless communist-infested industry is dead.

We were just gifted by our pups with a Frameo digital pic frame.

How does the Wifi work? Does it require your network to have a fixed IPA so that remote approved Frameo app users can send the pics? How does that get past the router? There are zero router ports to open from what I don't see in the instructions.

How safe is such a creature to ones network and connected devices?

All good questions to which I mostly lack answers. I suspect there's a cloud service involved so you don't need a fixed IP, which would also mean that when Frameo goes out of business it becomes an inert piece of glass.

If I'm reading that LG washing machine thing right, it was *uploading* 3GB+ of data. It downloaded a little less that 100MB.

So WTF is it doing to be sending home 3GB of data? Methinks Bob@NSA must be very interested in that guy, and used his washing machine as the convenient spy tool.

Can you set up some temp wifi network, change the network on the appliance to the temp SSID and then delete the temp network.

Or does it revert back to the previous network it was originally defined to work with?

If so, then renaming the existing network would do the trick - but what a pain!

Or you can castrate your device. Just follow this crazy lady:

It's a great washing machine otherwise. Mine is a combination washer/dryer - put dirty clothes in, take clean dry clothes out. It just has one setting on the main dial that does nothing because I refuse to enable WiFi.

My fridge, oven, dishwasher, and other appliances are all as dumb as a rock. The one feature I did go for in the new fridge is an alarm if the door is open, which is actually useful.

13 >> Does it require your network to have a fixed IPA so that remote approved Frameo app users can send the pics?

Most of these things work via connecting to a server. The device on the LAN side makes a connection to the server. This allows communication easily.

There is a thing called NAT traversal for IPv4 NAT. There are several ways to do it, some very hacky, others more normal. Look up NAT traversal and start reading.

But I'm almost certain devices like this simply use "cloud" server connections to allow this sort of thing.

No. Does not require wifi connection to continue working. Also has USB C and MSD slot for adding pics.

Wifi used to 1) update firmware; 2) optionally allow external upload of pics.

Nice idea but I'm concerned about potential malicious code. Frikkin' Chinese!

You know, the 3GB LG washing machine guy may be compromised by hackers. THere are security holes galore in the these IoT devices.

If I had to guess, I suspect his LG has been hacked (maybe came from the factory that way -- from what I read LG has a piss poor security record with this).

So I'm guessing his LG washing machine has been compromised, and that 3GB of data is some "botnet" crap it's running.

I broke down at got an Android smart phone a while back, a Motorola. I've gone through 3 of them. First one, I dropped without an protective case and cracked the glass screen. Had to get a new one. Then, that one, the battery started expanding. Outgassing. So, I'm now on phone #3.

I turned everything off I could, uninstalling shit (via the android SDK thing, I forget what it's called -- hook up the phone with a debug connection over USB and enter various incantations, letting you disable system shit). Don't ask, I forget, and was just following recipes online.

Anyway, I logged on to the Google site to delete whatver data it says it has on you. My account showed no data it had collected. They may be lying, but that's what it said.

A lot of the shit I turned came with warnings that "your device may not function as intended if you turn this off..." It's functioning okay for me.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (Mzdiz) at January 14, 2024 04:43 AM (Mzdiz)

42 Im glad I haven't come across any anime fubs that seem to interject politics in to the show (outside of the original politics of some shows, like Miyazaki still being butthurt that kicked a hornet's nest and got leveled for it)

But this gives a good time for my recent anime wrap up!

DanMachi Season 4 Part 1 - Pretty good, could the show be turning around and being an actual RPG type series.

DanMachi season 4 Part 2 - It was a lie, and reverted to the possibly worst shounen crap ever.

Zom 100 - Fun and funny, not marketed as a parody, but seems like it.

FLCL Shoegaze - Pointless and has absolutely nothing to do with FLCL. Not to mention really unfunny.

Im also about 6 episodes in to Initial D. Always heard great things about it, it's from that great era of anime, and so far its just kinda lame.

But I'm pulling for 'em.

My snowblower does not like wet snow.
How about you?
Posted by: Bruce

My snowblower does not throw wet snow very well. Instead, it pushes out formed snow/water bricks while saying, "Remember how you wanted to make an igloo when you were a kid? Look, here's some snow bricks for doing just that -- let's play!"

Okay, that's a lot better. Took a quick look at their website but it's an information-free zone.

92 "Does a cell phone video encode some sort of location data?"
Greetings!
In a word, yes.
My iPhone has data on where and when each picture or movie was taken. I don't know about other phones but I suspect similar features are somewhat universal by now.
I bought a Beelink mini a while ago. It's been a champ.

Ubuntu for the win. Download comes with Linux office, email (Thunderbird), browser (Firefox). No antivirus because, so far, you don't need it. Open source, free, but donations are welcome.
