Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Saturday Evening Movie Thread: Poor Things [moviegique]Yorgos Lanthimos. I like the way that sounds: YorGOS LANthiMOS! Sorry, I can't see a movie from this bizarre Greek filmmaker without going on about his name. It may be, in fact, that I don't like his movies per se but I enjoy any excuse to say his name. Yorgos. Lanthimos. Seriously, though, the deal with YL is this: He's weird. He makes odd movies that, shall we say, challenge sentimentality. Mark Ruffalo is less credible as a lothario than as a heartbroken schlub.Personally, I like sentimentality, so if you're going to dismantle it, you'd better do a good job. And so it was with the very challenging The Lobster and the somewhat more accessible (Academy Award winning) The Favourite. And while I liked The Lobster (a lot!) it was definitely in the realm of Movies-I-Would-Not-Generally-Recommend. (The Favourite, arguably, hides some of its prickliness and may be more watchable.) Poor Things is also going to be challenging, no doubt. It is a brilliant concept (enough to where I want to read the '90s book it was based on). Take the Victorian-era tropes of the young virgin, lured to her ruin by a seductive Lothario, struggling to survive by working in a brothel, only to come back home sadder-but-wiser. OK, now, for the young virgin, substitute Frankenstein's monster, and you have Poor Things. The Monster. (This pose, and several others in the early part of the film evoke Elsa Lanchester in "Bride of Frankenstein" Willem Dafoe had to spend nine hours in the makeup chair to look slightly scarier than usual. Congrats on the Golden Globe, Emma.In the past three weeks, we've seen Monster, The Boy and the Heron, upheld the Christmas tradition of seeing Korean movies on the 24th, 12/12 and The Deadly Sea, and in the new year the 3D documentary from Wim Wenders, Anselm, and The Iron Claw. They're all really good in their respective genres. 12/12 is a political thriller about how fascists took over South Korea in the '80s (see 1987: When The Day Comes for the end of that story). These sorts of movies are typically super-hard to follow for us, but this one was so well done we were on the edge of our seats the whole time. The Iron Claw is a moving drama based on a real-life wrestling family which is really terrific but also a tearjerker. Even so, it's my recommendation of the week for "normie American fare". It manages to portray values and people foreign to Hollywood in a respectful way. Check it out. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

For all the sex, violence and depravity, it's a pretty upbeat story, actually. But you have to get through all the sex, violence and depravity, which could be either a plus or a minus depending on your own tendencies.

Of the four of his films I've seen, I'm not whether I prefer The Lobster, or Killing Of a Sacred Deer.
I have The Favorite on Bluray here, but haven't watched it. I like Alps, and thought Dogtooth an incredible film, but as you've noted, not one I'd recommend for most people. Posted by: BurtTC at January 13, 2024 07:52 PM (QBaJw) 13

I have begun watching Season 5 of Fargo.
1. It is interesting that the chose to take elements of the movie and mix them up. There's an attempted kidnapping of the wife of car dealership owner by two thugs. The dealership guy has an overbearing parent. There's a female cop with a thick Minnesota accent in a relationship with an unsuccessful man. But they use the pieces differently. I am not sure if it's purely manipulative subverting expectations through fan service, or if it's going to be something more. 2. "Jon Hamm's Partytits" would be a great Moron nic. Almost a counterpart to MPPPP. Posted by: Victor Tango Kilo at January 13, 2024 07:54 PM (9yUzE) 17
I finally saw Nolan's "Oppenheimer". I didn't manage to catch it in the theater and after Nolan's exhortation to SEE IT IN IMAX!!, I thought I might be missing something by watching it on my home screen. Naaaah. The Bomb scene was oversold and underwhelming.
Surprise bonus laugh: young Feynman playing the bongos after a successful test at Trinity. Anyway, great cast, good movie, but self-indulgent artiness knocked it down a few pegs for me. I am very familiar with the players in this saga and had no problem following the personalities and timeline jumps, but I wonder if it was confusing to the Bomb Virgin. I have minimal sympathy for Oppie. You aren't granted a security clearance in perpetuity. Posted by: All Hail Eris at January 13, 2024 07:54 PM (+RQPJ) 18
I'm a big Wes Anderson fan. I saw that there was a new Wes Anderson movie on Amazon, and I set aside time to watch it. I was really excited and enjoyed the first 12 or so minutes immensely, because it set up a lot of characters the way that I enjoy him doing.
Then I turned it off because The Gay happened, and I don't know if I'll finish it. Although I'll admit that I sort of think The Gay occurred in a way to make fun of stereotypes, because the actor and the playwright meet for the first time and start the monkeypox-spreading stuff because, well, Gay actors and Hollywood. I've been on a bit of a Clint kick, spurred on by Netfux putting a couple of the 60s era westerns on their site: Joe Kidd and High Plains Drifter.
Both fine films, and then I watched Hang 'Em High, which I thought I had seen before, but apparently not. I was somewhat surprised by it, I guess I was assuming the main character would be one way, and turned out he was another. Also some subtle characterizations for the other characters, some of whom didn't have a lot of screen time. Not to mention Dennis Hopper getting to be Dennis Hopper for about 2 minutes. That was nice. Posted by: BurtTC at January 13, 2024 07:57 PM (QBaJw) 21

Also sort of movie related because sound systems:
Our Walmart has $300 Samsung wireless surround sound systems (soundbar, wireless rear right and left, subwoofer) for $80. I broke down and bought one and it sounds fantastic. So much so that I removed my other setup that took up a bunch of room and looked kind of tacky. Worth a look if you're going by and in the market. It's basically just a small comment on the fact that yeah, most playwriters are gay. It really has no further bearing on the film. It's a joyful film, and I got my first exposure to the song "Freight Train." An interesting little ditty, written by a black woman, and covered here by a Scottish skiffle singer, sounding so chipper and gay (in the traditional sense), until you realize the lyrics. I'm watching Star Wars: A New Hope and as many times as I've seen this, I'm just now realizing that Leia is a total asshole who bets the entire Rebel Fleet at Yavin on her gamble to destroy the Deathstar.
After they 'escape the DS' (right after Obi-Wan dies), she clearly says they only got away because they were let go. She says the Falcon is being tracked, which Solo waves off. So she knows they are being tracked and then proceeds to lead the Empire right to the base on Yavin. She's either an idiot or is gambling that she can entice Tarkin to attack the DS because it's coming. She gambles the whole resistance on this when she didn't have to. Flip around in TubiTV, see that they've got Dark of the Sun (1968, Rod Taylor, Jim Brown, Yvette Mimieux), notice that the streaming version is much better picture quality than what I'd caught from TCM on the dvr some years ago, so bought that and watched it again. A nifty and grim piece of work -- and even if it wasn't as nifty and grim as it is, hey, anything that gives Yvette Mimieux a few minutes of screen time can't be all bad. By the last one I just wanted to feed all the human characters through a fucking wood chipper but the monster action was *glorious*. Hong Kong is, apparently, lit up light a strip club. The movie's too fucking long and too involved but that scene is good. Perhaps also: Beach scene from Saving Private Ryan. Posted by: Vanya at January 13, 2024 08:43 PM (H5IZ1) 69
I remember reading a few years ago how that was the big challenge in TVs and what people pay big money for in the manufacturers' attempt to reproduce the variation in dark scenes, and whoever could crack that puzzle would own the market. 18 I'm a big Wes Anderson fan.
Random Harvest and Mrs. Miniver. Greer Garson. Mmmmmmm!!!!!!!! Random Harvest is just a really good melodrama. Dude loses his memory, falls in love, gets married, gets hit by a car but forgets he fell in love and got married, meets his wife but doesn't recognize her...it's good. Really, really good. Here's a mildly amusing marginally movie-related anecdote.
Years ago I was at a family gathering. My younger sister was seated to my left, her teenage son across from us. They were talking about his girlfriend, named Jasmine. I did a quick IMDb check on what year Aladdin premiered and did a quick calculation. I said to my nephew, "So, she's fifteen?" Which he confirmed. My sister, who had had a drink or two by then, got irate. "You told me she was sixteen!" I excused myself from the table and took a little walk while they proceeded to "discuss" the matter. 116 I also saw a film called Sisu about a Finnish prospector in WWII. It's got a John Wick vibe in that the Nazis cannot seem to kill him. Aksel Hennie plays the Nazi leader. He's always good.

131 Movie recommendation for the current weather conditions.
Death Hunt with Lee Marvin and Charles Bronson. Posted by: Titanium White at January 13, 2024 09:25 PM (MNhXM) Dr. Zhivago Stalingrad Posted by: Vanya 'Death Hunt'. I liked that movie. Nothing fancy. Just Charles Bronson killing and maiming across the west while being pursued by a posse lead by Lee Marvin, also killing and maiming across the west. Beautiful scenery and a 'happy' ending. Haven't seen it in a long time. I wonder if I'd still like it. Posted by: Puddleglum, cheer up for the worst is yet to come at January 13, 2024 09:35 PM (PGK1w) 146

Specifically her 21 year old sister. I don't really understand why there is a need for underage nudity. In this case the director got around the law and I'll admit I never saw the movie so maybe I'm just spouting off...but presuming someone was abusing her why do you need to show the act? Posted by: 18-1 at January 13, 2024 09:35 PM (ibTVg) 148

And the combos in some of the movies. Hulk, Thor, and Black Widow? A mutant with infinite strength, a physical god on Earth, and..... a human woman somewhere between James Bond and Batman?
Her ability is supposed to be she is a great spy. But since they had her standing side to side next to the rest of the Avengers many times in public that spy thing isn't very believable. TBH it could have been a great role where she was always the person giving the rest of the Avengers intel or setting up ambushes and such for them but...then she wouldn't have the MOST OBVIOUS girlboss... Posted by: 18-1 at January 13, 2024 09:35 PM (ibTVg) Probably goes without saying, it's unnecessary for the film. The story is about a perv who is basically stalking her, and she's a very mature for her age girl, in an unusual circumstance. Not what I was expecting when I watched it, and can't recommend on any level to anyone. Posted by: BurtTC at January 13, 2024 09:39 PM (QBaJw) 156

>>But Ruffalo is a second rate actor. You do a real injustice to second rate actors by lumping them in with Ruffalo.
