Drawing dicks on things is never, ever, not funny. Working offshore, guys drew dicks on everything. One job I was on (~2017), some guy took a bunch of mud that came up from bottom on some tooling and make a schlong about the size of someone's leg. It had veins and everything; the detailing was insanely good.
Saw the same thing in the military. I don't know what it is; when dudes are pissed off or bored, someone draws a dick on something, and it's funny. Posted by: Vanya, Speaking Over 200 MPH Wind at January 12, 2024 10:08 PM (H5IZ1) 18

"I do sort of feel for the younger generation, but I also don't know where they got this idea that they would graduate college, start working for a gazillion bucks and be on easy street."
- - - - - - I would say it was the educational complex, the universities and colleges that pushed the idea you needed at least an undergraduate's degree to have a "job", not a job. That you'd be raking in much more money having a degree, versus something icky like plumbing or carpentry. And said colleges have raped (figuratively, not like Indiana Jones and South Park) generations of students. Making a degree the 'low bar' needed for a good job. Pushing low-quality content (the 'Critical' studies, the very ones that comprise the "Critical Consciousness" that is Woke) that don't provide soft or hard skills (actually retarding them). Increasing the cost of tuition outside of the value it provides (see previous). And worse - making indentured servants of students. How? Because of the high cost of tuition. Specifically, they keep raising the costs, mask it with "Student Loans" to hide how expensive it really is... and make the loan a permanent stigma - You can't even bankrupt your way out. Re the white wine anecdote. A local wine store run by libs sells a wine called “Southern Right”, named for the whale and my guess they give a bit towards preservation. The story about the Minuteman missiles is a warning. There's a lot of technology that many under the age of 50 don't understand with any clarity. Gas engines, mechanical devices, certain tools and a host of other things like engineering airplanes that don't blow doors off, bridges that don't collapse on day one, etc.
What Gen-X or Z or whatever today knows how to change a tire, hang a mirror, change a washer in a faucet? Let alone do something complicated like rebuilding a carburetor. Most don't. 35 years from now the technology we see around us will be deteriorating to the point of being useless and nobody will know how to fix it. Let alone how to build it. China knows this. They know they can cease building garbage and selling it to us in exchange for concessions on other things. Like freedom. Bet on it. Posted by: Martini Farmer at January 12, 2024 10:38 PM (Q4IgG) 96

What I couldn’t find were styrofoam ice chests . You used to be able to get them even at 7-11s. Not even Walmart had them. I ended up buying a few plastic storage totes and sheets of styrofoam insulation and lined the totes with it.

If we wanted to forgive the student loans, I'd agree under only one term:
The colleges eat the cost. Not taxpayers, but the colleges. They did the whole too-big-to-fail thing. They somehow made the loans something that couldn't be bankrupted. They skyrocketed the 'cost' of the education because Pappa Government was their sugar daddy. For so-called non-profits, they're sure raking in a lot of money. And one other thing - they're pretending to be their own government. The various rape and assault trials, pretending to be a court without following the constitution and its rights. That should have been shut down right quick, and the perpetrators leading the kangaroo courts thrown into actual jail themselves. It's basically RICO, but with a veneer of "teachers are godly", thus untouchable. Much like how the media portrayed Fauci. Posted by: Another Anon at January 12, 2024 10:43 PM (hwP7U) 110

I worked for a farmer, summers, when I was in high school. We put up a lot of rectangular hay bales in the barn. Years later he went to the big round bales, as they required less manual labor. He was lifting one of these bales, with hay forks mounted on the front of the tractor, one day when the forks controls stuck and rolled the bale over him. It broke his back. He sat, immobilized, on the tractor seat most of the day until his wife found him.
He was paralyzed at the waist but lived for quite few years after that. His wife, all 90lbs of her, took care of him until he passed away. She died a week later. And on that cherry note, goodnight all. Posted by: javems at January 12, 2024 10:46 PM (8I4hW) 116

They used to tell us generically that if you had a college degree you would earn 1 million more dollars than a high school graduate. But if you really look at these things you spend four years giving them 100,000+ and four years earning nothing. When you graduate you’re already behind about 250,000.
I am not anti-at least the old-school college, where they at least tried to teach you something and not brainwash you. And I also understand for many it’s a cultural thing, and it is just simply part of who they are. I include myself in that. But I think there are many paths out there and immediately going into massive debt and earning nothing for four years is not necessarily the best move particularly win they spend half their time trying to make you a Democrat. Looks like they had used it for the trendy pasta-in-parmesan thing. Only problem was, the fridge was off, and had been for a long time. The cheese was coated in a thick, luxurious blanket of green, gray, and black, and had the consistency of brie. Tasted good though! (jk). Oh to have money to burn...

Mini would say the outlaw Josey Wales, is Clint Eastwood‘s greatest film as an actor. I’m not sure I can make a choice at this point as I grew up at the time when he was putting them out very regularly and we just simply went and saw all of them. Firefox is an example was a great no, but it was Clint Eastwood so we went and saw it. .
Sudden impact was another that at the moment it was great, but not one you think about a couple decades later. High Plains drifter was very original for sure people could make an argument that that was one of his most impactful films. Oh yeah, there was this other thing called the good the bad and the ugly. Gen X never got labeled with a political affiliation because they were not political. They do demographic test today and Gen X is more conservative than boomers or millennials.

Eastwood was always a fine actor, but I don't think I can pick a standout movie, because he stayed within a type, pretty much.
About the closest I can think of acting against type is The Beguiled. He's a great director though--which always means good acting instincts, as you're the main interpreter of the script and the final arbiter of the choices actors make. Posted by: Axeman at January 12, 2024 11:19 PM (OaZlZ) 169

177, for the most part I agree. I agree with generalization such as Gen X or latchkey kids and millennials, and Genzie are helicopter kids with helicopter parents. That is a simple truth because that’s what happened.
On the other hand, people of all generations, including boomers, fought our wars and defended our freedom. Also generation such as Gen X were the parents of millennials and Genzie, many of those have been astray. no generation gets off Scott free hell the greatest generation produced people who burn draft cards. The real estate market is seriously absolutely nothing like it was for my parents. I managed to get a nice enough little home, but it took a loooong time. I will not be "trading up" in 5-6 years. I have to make the shit last.
I suppose the pressure on the market may ease up as boomers pass on and their houses hit the market or get inherited by millennials. But I've been lucky. For most people in my generation, home ownership is pretty difficult/unlikely. It's not so much about expecting to graduate and live in a mansion, but just knowing you'll never own so much as a small home like mine until it's too late to raise a family in it that makes them so resentful about it. It's a pointless resentment. The US had growing prosperity in most generations since it's inception, but the Boomers were the last one. It's downhill from here, and hopelessness breeds anger. People would rather blame the person right upstairs from the basement they live in, and those people would rather sneer at the people in the basement, than the people they both voted for. Because blaming those politicians would mean they were both wrong about everything they believed. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at January 12, 2024 11:49 PM (0FoWg) 235

In fact for me the best argument that the Moon landing was faked was that all the missions worked except for the capsule that burnt on the pad and the one that had to abort and come home with the astronauts. Every big aeronautical jump previously featured many fatal failures before it was achieved. Yet the Moon thing went pretty smooth considering history, quite a few times it worked.

Nobody escapes blame for this mess. But everyone wants to, and so they point the finger of blame at one another while ignoring the three pointing back at themselves. It's utterly pointless and counterproductive. To me the weirdest thing is boomers are considered conservative now. That is the exact opposite of what we were taught in school in any political science department in high school or college in the 80s you would be told how liberal boomers were.
So to get off generalizations about generations, which always pisses people off, no matter what you say, and no matter where. Generations aside the fact of the matter is what was considered lefty 50 years ago is far right today. That is the predicament we are in. Someone once mentioned that Bill Clinton could never be elected today in a Democrat primary. That is the generational shift as bad as the left was before, and they were bad. There’s no sugarcoating that, what they respond today is more malignant. You can never throw in all of a generation as many of the youngest people are fighting against this. I look at Vivek, and I see him as Trumps VP. If I got odds, I would bet on it too. Posted by: Quint at January 13, 2024 12:52 AM (tKORK) 314
