Gun Bans in Post Offices Violate 2nd Amendment, Judge Says
The ruling came after a person was charged with possessing firearms in a post office, which he argued was ‘unconstitutional.’ U.S. District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle for the Middle District of Florida cited the 2022 Supreme Court ruling in the New York State Rifle and Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen case, in which the high court said that the Second Amendment protects a U.S. citizen’s right to carry a handgun in public for self-defense purposes. That ruling also set up a new test for judging firearms laws, stating that such legal restrictions should be consistent with the country’s historical tradition of firearms regulation. Postal worker Emmanuel Ayala was indicted by the United States on charges of violating Section 930(a) of the U.S. Code, which regulates the possession of firearms and dangerous weapons in federal facilities. Mr. Ayala argued that the law is “unconstitutional as applied to him” since historical records don’t support a law banning firearms in post offices. Nice shooting Weasel! Great tips on the lube too.
I use a dime to disassemble the bolt and one just has to be careful to make sure it does not slip out. I think they actually made a disc for bolt disassembly but I have never seen one. The M1917 is a heavy, solid rifle. A little oddity; used to be if you walked out the front door of the old O Club at Benning and looked down, there was, not unexpectedly, a set of crossed rifles inset into the stone of the porch. They’re were not muskets. They’re were not Springfields. They’re were M1917s. Wonder if their still there. Posted by: Hairyback Guy at January 14, 2024 07:15 PM (R/m4+) 43

Maybe a 1927 Thompson too.
Posted by: G'rump928(c) at January 14, 2024 07:04 PM (aD39U) Saw an M16A1 at a recent Chantilly show asking $33k. "Mid-range priced" in the world of NFA Class 3. Are you referring to a Model 1928 Thompson? Technically, the Model 1927 is available today as a semi-auto SBR from Kahr Arms. The Model 1927 was and is a semi-auto version of the Thompson. The Colt-made Model 1921s are the top of the heap in the collectible Thompson market, though. Although only around 2,000 or so are still transferrable, records from the period exist to tell you where almost all of these guns went by serial number. Get a Model 1921, and you can almost always get a provenance with it. Posted by: Ed L at January 14, 2024 07:18 PM (yRXSd) Posted by: andycanuck (2yu8s) at January 14, 2024 07:18 PM (2yu8s) 55

And in the theme of this gun thread - my P226 got a cleaning and some work. I had put an adapter plate on it and mounted a red dot on it. Because my mantra is - was - dots on everything. New mantra - dots on everything made for dots. I never quite got used to the look of the sight on the adapter plate. Looked a little ungainly. So off with the plate.
But my old iron sights were not great. The front sight might have been a night sight, but if it was tritium, well, this pistol was manufactured in 1994, and if it glowed, it doesn't any more. I ordered some Sig Xrays and a new sight pusher. BUT - I only have one Sig P226, and we kind of have to have 2 of everything here. And in the vein of dots on what's made for dots.... Sig P226 Legion RXP comes with a red dot installed. A little pricy, but sra blaster has authorized the purchase. After we take care of some ranch purchases.... thanks Posted by: DenverGregg at January 14, 2024 07:11 PM (ccqW3) I'm assuming they've been safety checked. You're probably going to need to take a shotgun to an outdoor range. And even there, they might require slugs, unless they have a skeet range. (If an indoor range allows it, you will definitely have to use slugs. They don't want you peppering other people's targets.) It depends on what you are using them for. A powder suitable for very light target loads, like 38 special 148 grain wadcutters, won't be appropriate for heavier bullets and faster velocities. Get several loading manuals, not just one, for techniques and loading data. Fortunately, many powder makers have the info online. I still suggest having at least two reloading manuals. Expect indoor ranges to have restrictions on what you can shoot w/ your 12 gauge, what you can shoot at (larger targets are usually required), and minimum distances your target has to be downrange. Bring both ear plugs and earmuffs. You'll need them for the blast and noise a 12 gauge produces indoors. If at all possible, go when there are fewer people at the range (i.e. weekdays). So one of things they are pushing is an SAO version. Honest Outlaw reviewed one and he likes it. Says it makes it more like a 1911. It's available in DA/SA, also. But Cabela's, for example, only carries the SAO. I think I probably want the DA/SA as that is what I am used to, and I like that functionality even though I never shoot DA. Historical records would probably show most post offices were also the dry goods store, barber shop, and deputy's substation (chair between the pickle barrel and cracker barrel). But functionally it acts like single action. Striker fired guns typically have a heavier trigger than single action guns. The 320 is also polymer framed vs all metal. Evening, folk! I normally don't get a chance to visit the Gun Thread; I don't look at the computer on evenings before I have to go to work. Perceived wisdom is that the light can interfere with sleep -- the last thing I need. But I'm off tomorrow, so all the rules are suspended!
My question: There will be a gun show this upcoming weekend in my vicinity. It's been years since I've been to one, and am not sure. Will there be gun dealers there, i.e., one with actual storefronts? Or is it mostly collectors and enthusiasts buying and selling? If I were interested in buying a handgun from a vendor, how can I be sure I'm getting a gun that actually works? It's not like I can try the gun out right there like you can a used car. Yes, I plan to visit one of the ranges here and get in some range time with a rental or three to see what suits me. But when I'm ready to buy at a gun show, then what? If money is no object, my choice is the H&K MP5K-PDW equipped w/ the folding Choate stock, H&K vertical foregrip, Aimpoint or equivalent RDS, 15 round magazine in the weapon and two 30 round magazines as reloads. With the stock folded and using 15 round magazines, this setup is concealable under a jacket or suit. The H&K MP5 is an inherently accurate firearm (2" groups at 25 yards are doable), and the RDS aids quick, accurate shots. Those who got the opportunity to shoot Weasel Buddy Jeff's MP5K-PDW in TX in 2022 know firsthand how accurate and controllable his setup (mostly identical to that spelled out above) can be, even in a first timer's hands. Outfits that do VIP protection for a living (USSS, Scotland Yard Metropolitan Police, SAS, etc.) use the MP5K-PDW for a reason. Posted by: Ed L at January 14, 2024 07:55 PM (yRXSd) 150

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 14, 2024 07:53 PM (omVj0) Ask if he has some snap caps so you can dry fire. If not (and it's centerfire) ask if you can dry fire without them. Just be a good gunner and don't sight on anyone in the place. Also, get a card from the guy. If he doesn't have one, then I'm less inclined. As to "dealers" vs private sales - most of the folks at a gun show will be FFLs if they're selling guns. They sell enough to get in trouble with the law if they aren't. But there will be individuals mixed in, as well. Buying? Everywhere requires the FLLs to run a NICS, and most places with shows will require individual sellers to also use a NICS setup at the show. I'll let the DMV MGC weigh in, though, as they do a LOT of gun shows. Posted by: GWB at January 14, 2024 08:00 PM (32nmx) 161

If at all possible, go when there are fewer people at the range (i.e. weekdays). Standing adjacent to a lane where someone is shooting a 12 gauge or high-power rifle cartridge (.30-06, .30 indoors is a very unpleasant experience. Let your range neighbors know what you're doing.

But, they do have two ranges, one handgun, one rifle/shotgun. 30 cal max, not sure about shotguns. And you have to leave your empty caes/hulls. Most of the bigger storefront operations will show up at a gun show. That guy setting up a couple of dozen tables with a sea of brand-new Glocks, SIGs, and everything else under the sun isn't a collector or gun enthusiast. Get to know the owner or manager, tell them what your looking for and buy something to show your not full of BS. After a while you'll gain a new resource for firearms and ammo and you will be surprised what comes in the door of some shops. Exactly what I'm afraid of.
- That's a pretty accurate distilled-down description, but they're still fun to go to. Something else to consider is not to rush into anything and visit two or three gun dealers in your area. You'll get different "vibes" off of each of them, and you can go from there. I've got one I like where the staff is all ex-military and they come off as pretty gruff and harsh, but they're really decent guys. They just put up with a bunch of stupidity from some customers and I suspect try to shut it down before it starts. Another store deals mostly with hunters and is completely different in stock and how they handle sales because they're not focused on black rifles, suppressors, etc. Don't rush, though. That only leads to regret. That said, go to the gun show and if you see the right thing don't hesitate to snap it up. Don't go determined to buy that day, though. I'm kinda whupped as well. Miss Linda and I drove an hour up the highway to have breakfast at Cracker Barrel, and then tramped around the outlet mall right behind it for about three hours. Brooks Brothers is having a 50% off sale and has good stuff; Ralph Lauren has great stuff but its "outlet" prices are pretty much what I'd find on the same things at the malls near me. I better wait for a sale.
Still, it was a nice day trip and a good run for the car, which has not had an extended Interstate run in a while. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 14, 2024 08:30 PM (omVj0) 213

Pawn shops aren't that bad, they are an FFL, and you can look at the guns to see if they look beat up. You probably want to have a good idea of both what you are willing to spend and a ballpark to what the current market is, at least from the big vendors.
I have bought some rifles at a pawn shop, I regret not getting a repro matchlock once, but other than that, it is a place that does rely on its good reputation. I wouldn't buy a nail gun there, the construction equipment the local pawn shop I used to go to had was pretty heavily used. Posted by: Kindltot at January 14, 2024 08:35 PM (D7oie) 217

Gun shows really vary by venue. The DMV MGC goes to "The Nation's Gunshow" which is pretty large. There are 5 or 6 major vendors, another handful of specialty vendors, a few collector vendors, a VERY few individual sellers, and, yes, a bunch of the assorted ash and trash of all kinds of stuff in camo and knives and toys and jewelry cleaners and anything you could ever want to bling your Glock and/or AR.

One of the reasons I go to the Chantilly show is not because of the prices, but because I can find stuff there that I can't at my LGS. Rustling up .45 LC for my Colt SAA? Easier to find it at the show. That B&T Station SIX pistol in 9mm featured on the blog last year? Saw it at Chantilly and snapped it up. The Military/Law Enforcement model Benelli M4 shotgun I dragged to TX last October? Also a Chantilly pickup. None of these were bargains, but they never would have made into the door of my LGS. BTW, I saw something disturbing at WalMart today. I was looking for a new windshield scraper, and saw some pepper spray hanging on an end cap. And, it was equipped with a little laser on the grip.
Now, I've seen a laser on a slingshot and it was kinda silly. But not disturbing. My concern is that bear/pepper spray MUST be shot into the face of an assailant. And that means you're shooting this laser directly into the face/eyes of the person. While spray is supposed to be non-lethal, I think aiming a laser into anyone's eyes will be cause to sue you to the poor house. "Grave bodily harm" anyone? Now, if you use it on a bear, you are much less likely to face a civil jury. But if you use that on a person, you'd best have a dead battery in that laser, or it will get brought up by a lawyer somewhere down the road and your erstwhile attacker will be wearing an eye patch to the trial and soaking you for everything you own. And a bad prosecutor might very well have you on the hook for endangerment and such. If you're going to laser someone you'd best shoot them, it seems to me. Just finished putting the XRay sights on the P226. VERY bright tritium. This is good.
The new sight pusher worked really well, but not perfectly. I had gotten a cheapo ($25) sight pusher before that worked, but destroyed itself in the process of working. This new one is a little more expensive, $60. It has an intriguing "self-centering" feature. It does center the slide. It does NOT center the sight which is what you would want to self-center. But I can see why that would not be possible. The slide centering is an advantage, at least. It's also very durable, did not injure itself or the slide. That sucks, seeing a bunch of cool stuff, but not able to take any of it home. Unless you get to know some of the usual sellers that regularly come to Chantilly, you're not going to get much in the way of bargains. If I'm going to pay extra for stuff, I'm going to get the stuff that I can't get anywhere else. And that CAN be found at Chantilly, at least. Posted by: Ed L at January 14, 2024 09:18 PM (yRXSd) 249

Many lasers found in consumer products (i.e. laser pointers) are NOT eye-safe. Hit someone in the eyes w/ a laser and the target/victim will be blind, probably permanently. That's a criminal charge you've just picked up (malicious wounding or something similar), and most prosecutors will file charges against you for that. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at January 14, 2024 07:53 PM (omVj0) Depends on the show, most are a mix of dealers looking to sell merchandise, with some collectors mixed in. As to being sure what you buy works, guns are fairly simple machines, with not a lot to go wrong. If you stick to known brands and read reviews for what you decide on, you should be OK. If you do get a lemon, most manufacturers stand behind what they make, and will fix problems, however you will have the hassle for sending the defective gun back to them for repair. The sight pusher was easy to use, but the sights did not want to play along nicfely. The sights would move smoothly until they got into the center area. Then they would stick and POP - move past where center was. And same going back the other way. Took a LOT of fiddling on the front sight. Must have gone back and forth ten times before it finally centerd. The rear only took forward back and forward.

GWB-- another idea-- cut a notch into edge of bag, like the "resealable" grocery pouches, for easier tear?
Just need to test the plastic, I'd guess. Posted by: QJ (Lol, jimsnd great idea!) at January 14, 2024 09:54 PM (njWTi) 284

Yes. Sous Vide bags are nothing more than heavy plastic bags with a pattern embossed on one side to allow air movement. Sealing a pistol in one should be straightforward, and opening the bag can be done by hand with a little effort, or a pocket knife with no effort at all. I got a sight pusher that was supposedly equipped with blocks that were specific for my H&K VP9
They sucked, and it was a huge waste. Keep us posted on that one! Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo...liberal esthete at January 14, 2024 09:51 PM (5ghi+) There is a Sig P-series specific pusher - but it is, believe it or not - EXPENSIVE - and of course limited to just P-series non-polymer Sigs. http://tinyurl.com/mrxvmvjy Posted by: blaster at January 14, 2024 09:56 PM (IFNME) 287
