Turning And Turning In The Widening ONT

Hello everybody! Welcome to Thursday night. En garde! Prêts? Allez! !

Jewel-Box Ballparks

The Comiskey effect: Can MLB revive what it lost in the retro building boom?

The architecture firm HOK, later named Populous, designed Guaranteed Rate Field. The firm also created Camden Yards, which opened in 1992 in Baltimore. Populous has designed or renovated 20 MLB parks.

Camden Yards was viewed as a revelation in design, harkening back to a bygone era because it featured the B&O Warehouse beyond right field, asymmetric dimensions, and wrought-iron flourishes. Camden Yards ushered in the greatest stadium construction boom since the jewel-box era.

In contrast, it made Comiskey's replacement appear to be a massive error: it was generic, gigantic, and soulless. (HOK gave White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf a Camden-like option, but he turned it down.)

But in many ways, at least from foul pole to foul pole, the two new parks were similar.

While it wasn't quite as tall, it still towered over classic, jewel-box parks. And to eliminate obstructed seating caused by beams needed to support the upper deck, both stadiums pushed the upper deck back from the playing surface. Layers of skyboxes and club seats were added between the upper and lower decks. This became the template. The retro generation of ballparks, for all their amenities and wider concourses, have done one great disservice to the fan experience: they've pushed fans further from the playing field.

"Why do we keep building the same park with different window dressing?" Flesch said.

This is real (heh) inside baseball stuff, but it's interesting nonetheless. Look, I love Camden Yards, it's a great place to take in a game, and it did set the standard in ballpark construction, but it's 30 years old now. I'd love to see a new revolution in ballpark design with a modern take on the old jewel-box stadiums. Smaller parks with the seats on top of the field like you're at a play, not a soccer match, yet all modern amenities? Lemmie get a big hell yeah from the baseball fans out there, HELL ,YEAH!

Tunnel Jews

This story is kind of odd, but it's been bouncing around the internet for the past week, mostly in the wrong places (more on that in a sec)

Tunnel Found Burrowed Under Women’s Section of 770, Possibly Destabilizing The Building

Now the story is likely as simple as it seems: Wanting to expand, the Jews dug tunnels when they couldn't get permits for above ground expansion. Simple enough, but this is where I mean it's being discussed in all the wrong places. The anti-Semites have their teeth in this thing and they're going to town. Try to find out more factual information and * Poof! *, like Alice, you're down the rabbi hole. Here is a very long thread on Twitter that, as far as I can tell, does an excellent job at explaining the situation, including background information on the Chabad.

What's wild is that the people digging were...teenagers. Does that mean they're Teenage Jewish Ninj....nevermind.

Reason To Carry Concealed # 15,295

30 Years Later: Massacre at Luby’s Cafeteria in Killeen

I remember when this happened. I wasn't in Texas then, but it was national news. I doubt it could happen again down here, at least not the same way. Too many people carry today. And that's a good thing.

This Is Amazing

Click through and read the entire thing. An absolutely fascinating bit of guerrilla archaeology.

TRUST ME on this, it's worth the read.

Here's A Neat Bit Of History

The South End “Reservation” Red-Light District — ca. 1907

That seemed odd. Three single women occupying three separate houses, all next-door to one other. There weren’t a lot of single women living in houses alone in 1907. Hmm. I checked all the directories between 1905 and 1910 to see who was living in that block. Every year, each of those houses showed a new occupant, and, with one exception, all were single woman (the exception was a man who owned a saloon across the street and who had faced charges at one point for “keeping a disorderly house” ). …Okay. I got the picture.

I checked the Sanborn map from 1905 for this block and saw something I’d never seen before: the designation of a building with the letters “F.B.” What did that mean? Turns out, it means “Female Boarding House.” Or, less euphemistically… a brothel. Look at the map here (more maps are linked at the bottom of this post) to see the frankly ASTRONOMICAL number of “F.B.” buildings in this one small area. (There weren’t as many saloons — designated with “Sal.” — as I expected, but I’m pretty sure a lot of saloons in this area were operating illegally.)

Yes Dallas had legalized prostitution in the first part of the 20th century. Fascinating stuff.

I Found This When Researching The Tunnel Story

I had been told what an eruv was years ago, but had since forgotten. It's pretty interesting.

A Fishing Line Encircles Manhattan, Protecting Sanctity Of Sabbath

The concept of the eruv was first established almost 2,000 years ago to allow Jews to more realistically follow the laws of Sabbath rest, particularly one — no carrying on the Sabbath.

According to the laws of Sabbath rest, nothing can be carried from the domestic zone into the public zone on Saturday. That means no carrying house keys or a wallet. It also means no pushing a baby stroller. For parents of young children, no carrying would mean not leaving the house on Saturday.

The eruv symbolically extends the domestic zone into the public zone, permitting activities within it that would normally be forbidden to observant Jews on the Sabbath.

Pretty neat.

News Of The Weird

Inmate's organs, including brain, missing from decomposing body; second case revealed in last month

ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ala. — ABC 33/40 News has obtained court documents revealing another case of a deceased Alabama inmate's body found missing organs. The body of Charles Edward Singleton was returned to his family missing all organs including his brain.

Singleton died on November 2, 2021 in the custody of the Alabama Department of Corrections. He had been housed at the Hamilton Aged and Infirmed before he was sent to an outside hospital for care prior to his death.

The brain was later found in a jar labeled “Abby Normal”.

Crisis Of Competence

Complex Systems Won’t Survive the Competence Crisis

While disasters like these are often front-page news, the broader connection between the disasters barely elicits any mention. America must be understood as a system of interwoven systems; the healthcare system sends a bill to a patient using the postal system, and that patient uses the mobile phone system to pay the bill with a credit card issued by the banking system. All these systems must be assumed to work for anyone to make even simple decisions. But the failure of one system has cascading consequences for all of the adjacent systems. As a consequence of escalating rates of failure, America’s complex systems are slowly collapsing.

The core issue is that changing political mores have established the systematic promotion of the unqualified and sidelining of the competent. This has continually weakened our society’s ability to manage modern systems. At its inception, it represented a break from the trend of the 1920s to the 1960s, when the direct meritocratic evaluation of competence became the norm across vast swaths of American society.

Scary stuff. What say you, Mr. Yeats?

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

5 On the Illinois gun grab thing, the case that was "rejected" by SCOTUS was not the ISRA case.

"SCOTUS traditionally has not interfered with the procedures, rules, and workings of State Legislative bodies. This is the likely cause why this case was turned down. We would like to remind everyone that the ISRA is NOT involved in any way with the Caulkins v. JB Pritzker case.
Our lawsuit is Harrel v. Raoul, and we are presently working on an appeal for SCOTUS to review our case. That appeal must be presented to the Supreme Court by March 10, 2024. Based on recent rulings by SCOTUS, we have a good chance of winning our case."

34 For the tunneling Hebrews, Reddit posts seem to indicate that:
- it wasn't the women's section, but the men's ritual bathhouse (and a closed one) they were tunneling to
- The reasoning was due to a messianic rabbi, one who is no longer of the earth
- Other members of the temple disapproved of their brethren's underground activities, and were the ones to actually call in the government about it.

Definitely bizarre, though hopefully less Jonestown-y in their piousness.

By the time they realize they've booted those guys out the door without training a replacement it's often too late to do more than freak out cause the guy is dead.

Our power was restored today after being out for nearly forty hours.

Here's the thing -- it was a dead tree trunk that stall had a couple of major arms on it that crashed through the power line. It clearly was rotten and bad been for some years now.

And here's the next thing -- I can walk along the power line right of way in the back of our yard and the neighbors' yard and find another six to eight remnants of trees that are in roughly the same state as this week's rotted actor. So we'll be treated to another six to eight outages sponsored by each of those trees.

When I point out the situation to power company reps or their hired tree removers all I get are indifferent shrugs. "You're right, they're bad, but we're not here to tear out every potential problem." Commercial services won't touch them because, "Like, power lines, dude."

It is an insidious form of planned obsolescence.

40 Both the tunnel Jews and the eruv sound fishy as all get out.

The eruv is easily dealt with: Do you imagine that God, the Creator, is dumb? If you do, this sounds clever. If you don't, this sounds like giving the finger to the Almighty while smirking to oneself how clever one was because you did it behind a pillow so He could not see.

The mental ability of those who think 'I'm going to trick an omniscient Being' is obviously low. They probably should stay in on Sabbath just so they don't trip on a blade of grass.

As to the tunnel Jews, well, I saw a pic of small beds, child size ones, soiled. That's not good if the obvious interpretation is applied. Secondly, I saw a bunch of Jews in a room engage in mob behavior with cops. That is not as bad, but its also clearer, and not acceptable. When the cops are legit arresting someone, you don't get to try to mob the cops to rescue them. It was interesting watching a bunch of pale people acting much like Blacks.

53 "Pretty neat."

No, it's pretty stupid (and I'm Jewish). The idea of the Sabbath is to not toil, to relax, to enjoy the fruits of the 6-day work week. When the Sabbath becomes substantially less enjoyable than the work week, something's wrong. Imagine having electricity in the Negev desert (where it gets kinda hot) 3,000 years ago but on Shabbat you couldn't turn it on simply by pushing a button. All the contrivances these super-"observant" Jews do to justify sitting around doing absolutely nothing (including having fun) is stupefying. It's probably "illegal" to push out a turd -- if it doesn't come out on it's own you just have to let it plug you up until sundown Saturday. WTF? And if it does come out, you can't flush and have to leave the lid up. Wait, get a goyim to flush for you. I'd rather have a 7-day work week.

In 1989 the estimated annual take by the cartels was $200 billion. God only knows what it is today. Thinking 1989 money, assume 5% for overhead protection, buying judges, politicians, DEA, etc. That's ten billion dollars to spread around...every year. 30 years ago.
Its insidious.

62 Regarding the Complex Systems, two thoughts:

1) It sounds like this is just about computer systems, but the same can be said about maintenance in general. We grouse about the constant potholes that don't get filled properly, but what about the bridges, the buildings, the utilities? Maintaining and fixing problems is a hard job that only requires one missed sign to be catastrophic. Worse, there might not be any noticeable sign before the failure.

2) Software-wise, Joel Spolsky had an article about "Leaky Abstractions"; we put layers of design above other layers to abstract out and make things easy - Read File and Write File instead of having to handle a floppy disc versus hard drive versus USB. But if something fails at the low level, or doesn't fit the paradigm as expected, it breaks in weird ways. Without the underlying knowledge, you don't know what to look for, or how to fix it. Something that "just works" suddenly doesn't. And they're putting layers and layers upon things nowadays, not always stable themselves.

A serious program begun several years ago for clearing away threatening trees has made a huge difference in our area.

Baker with the Braves against the AAA All-Stars ('71-72?). Nailed a homer down the left field line. Little Feat was the only non-baseball game event I saw there, with Bonnie Raitt the opener.

When the system-cratering catastrophe occurs, the youngsters will blame the old white male designers for not making systems and hardware self-maintaining, self-updating, and capable of changing as verbally commanded by self-same youngsters. A new religion will spring-up, based on cursing and damning everything ever designed by straight white men. This religion will die-out as its members die, incapable of feeding, clothing, sheltering, and defending themselves. A new Rome will eventually arise, and civilization will be rebuilt.

Scariest thing I've ever come across in my life... working at COMSUBPAC, on the computers that talked to his submarines, including those dealing with FailSafe. We had update code, and it didn't work right, so we are punching through Machine code... and suddenly realize there is a section of code, that is 'jump to' 'd around...

That would enter the beginning of the failsafe code, but had been just Rem'd out... not taken out.

But.... as you could go to any instruction from the maintenance panel... and start it running from there?

Yeah... only time I ever had to wake up the Admiral.

114 Update on GnuBreed.

Had the blessings to yack with the man himself on the phone, this afternoon. He officially goes "into" Hospice, tomorrow.

Hell of a rough ride, not only is his liver not livering much, anymore, but it's taking his kidneys along with it on the ride.

Drs say "days, weeks, maybe some months." That's a helluva spread. They're "controlling" it, as much with balancing nutrition, as the are drugs. Lots of daily tracking of "numbers", enough blood draws to make a pin-cushion smile.

He's still got the humor, though. An "intake" nurse gave him a quizzical look when he jumbled an answer to the endless list of questions. Says, he told her: "...hey, cut me some slack, this is my first time dying, I've never done this before!"

Good news though, is this. He DOES have family and friends there, tending to his needs, and making sure he'll want for nothing.

Finally, this. He is MASSIVLY GRATEFUL for all the Horde Prayers, and would be most pleased, should they continue.

That's why as soon as Hitler won protesting was abolished. It's interesting that our pols don't feel like their position is strong enough for that. Which means they're definitely not strong enough to pull Mao's eradication of the Red Guard once they became a threat. Today's students should be grateful, not that they know enough history to realize that.

Tiger stadium at the corner of Michigan and Trumbull was unbelievably intimate. I was lucky enough to take my kids there for one of the last games before they moved to Comerica Park. As I'm walking through and thinking of Babe Ruth, Micky Mantle, Lou Gehrig, Ty Cobb, Al Kaline.... the history was palpable. They all played there. You could smell a hundred years of history. It was a moving experience. I'd been there many times but it was different when I knew it was going to close after 4 or 5 more games.

The Left already ran an insurrection, and not one Democrat in power gave the slightest crap.

When the BLM warlords set up the CHAZ/CHOP zone in Seattle, they were sovereign over that territory for several weeks. NOT the city of Seattle, the state of Washington, or the federal government.

They were running around brandishing AR-15s, no Democrats cared. They raped a bunch of women, no Democrats cared. They murdered two young black men, no Democrats cared because there was no political benefit.

Finally, when they murdered another black kid, the Democrats stepped in because it was starting to make them look bad.

Guess how many people the feds have arrested from THAT insurrection?

217 About the brain being missing. I'm a forensic pathologist. Depending on the degree of decomposition, there may not be recognizable brain tissue. As the brain decomposes, it liquefies and in some cases just flows onto the table when the skull is opened. There may be no brain to return. Again, depending on the degree of decomposition, other organs may not be easily identified unless you have significant experience with decomps.

Back in the '80s, Porter-Cable sold a hand held circular saw... with a 12" diameter blade.

Uses were such as Railroad Ties used in landscaping, large Roof Beams, such as the laminated one's you'll see in many a church roof's interior aspect.

Thing was a beast. The sheer torque it would produce when you first hit the switch, made it a dangerous tool, indeed. 1.5 hp motor, it would CUT.

There *are* still 12" circular saws on the market, if you can find 'em. But, don't, please. I prefer no sawn apart Horde, m'kay?

Big spinning blades are basically gyroscopes, and they can become a real life Physics 101 demonstration if you swing them around while they are still running. I once made the mistake of picking up a rotary planer while it was still spinning. It started squirming around in my hands like a big dog objecting to getting a bath. 256 195 - Tom Servo -- Let me guess: your uncle's house was built east of 24th Srreet. By the time they started building west of
24th, the idea of insulation was slowly trickling through the construction industry. Good fitting windows had to wait until after the War.

We had an electrical problem. Our neighbor was a journey man electrician. He was practically rolling on the floor laughing. "They haven't done this way of setting up since before the War!" We had to call a plumber. He looked around, then remarked that his grandfather had probably installed it originally.

Oh well, everybody knew everybody and who you could call in a pinch. My one neighbor occasionally babysat the twins when I had to take #2 son to kindergarden. Poor Jim came trotting in one really crappy day and started to pour himself a cup of coffee. Within seconds, he was cursing like a stevedore. My elderly white cat liked to curl up around the carafe. That day, she lifted her head and opened her eyes before falling back t sleep. He'd always assumed she was just one of the lids' toy. " It's alive! That damn thing is alive!"

I hit one of those this evening in East Mesa. University Drive westbound, turning south onto Ellsworth. Missed the advance green to to turn south, but the arrow was flashing yellow, and after oncoming traffic cleared, I was able to make the turn in complete safety. This is smart traffic control, and it's "green", too. Less time spent idling at a light, the fewer the emissions.

And I'd better have a shitton of cats waiting for me there, or I'm gonna be pissed.

307 I remember in my Traffic Engineering class in college (one of the required courses for a Civil Engineering degree) - they actually figured out the maximum amount of time most people would patiently wait for a light to turn green. And they asked everyone how long they THOUGHT they had been waiting (always longer than the actual time).

Then they figured out the optimum time for a light to cycle given the traffic flow at any given time.

Yes, there are actually equations, and no, I don't remember any of them - all I do know is that was one of the most FUN classes I took. Oh, the stories!

311 Teresa in Fort Worth...

Yeah, and every cop out there even remotely worth his salt, is VERY well educated as to the Northwest Institute of Traffic Technology studies.

Their data, graphs and calculations as to skid marks alone, on various surfaces, are the Bible as to computing Minimum Speeds required as to have left those skids, and are vital to accident investigators, everywhere.

On that, they're great. On "trafficing" up the flow with too many red lights, and not synchronizing the damn things to move the most, more smoothly, across the grid and boulevard. On that, they suck.

It might be turning around. Schools are rethinking the dropping of standardized tests to the point that the NY Times writes favorably of this reversal. And it's safe to say out loud that DEI is a crock. Listen good, and you may hear lefties claiming that DEI was a conservative trap all along.

Posted by: Blonde Morticia at January 12, 2024 03:12 AM (PoRhL)

324 Gnubreed is now in same position my husband was in, 3 years ago.

Failing liver & kidneys. No transplant (at least, not until he'd had ZERO alcohol for a year.) and looking at hospice.

Hubby's legs were so swollen, he could barely walk. He fell a few times and couldn't get himself off the floor. Had ascites (fluid buildup in abdomen) and esophageal varices. Was weak, nauseated, ate very little and slept very much.

Dr. said: "You need to get your affairs in order. Now. Come back in one month, if you're still alive."

Posted by: JQ at January 12, 2024 03:25 AM (njWTi)

325 Testing is not the issue- it never was. It is the method of teaching and holding people accountable. The testing is just a measure of how they are doing their jobs- you would still have to close the loop and fire the ones who suck.

Commies are fucking lazy idiots. They are fetishistic in their thinking as well as being cowards. You can bring back all the testing you want and it will change absolutely nothing except show you how full of shit these 'teaching' methods are. And they are not even teaching methods. Classrooms/slam poetry sessions are not pedagogy. And they will never willingly go back to the old ways- because that involves actual fucking work. And stress. And responsibility.

Posted by: Aetius451AD at January 12, 2024 03:31 AM (di6C2)

326 (cont'd)

We went thru hell and lots of Dr visits, blood tests *all the time* and lots of meds and plenty of scares, ER visits... UGH! He'd get the fluid drained monthly (he refused the permanent drain), often as much as 10 liters. Then, he went through TIPS surgery. It was successful, and he's had no more ascites. Oh, but then more meds-- due to blood non-filtration & the encephalopathy that caused.

It's been a long road. We've both fought very hard. Hubby always said he never wanted the transplant anyway. Everyone we knew (and some here!) were praying for him.

Every day is a gift. I'm rambling now.

So very sorry, Gnubreed. I hope you're able to make the most of the time you have left.

Hubby's still here, is back to his normal 180lbs (was down to 128 at the worst) and full of pee & vinegar. We don't know how long this will last, but are grateful to God for this extra time!

Just this week, at follow up visit, Dr shook his hand & said hubby is doing wonderfully... and that Dr could count on one hand, the number of patients what made it this long after the original dire prognosis.

A miracle, indeed!

329 Some years ago i cut my alcohol intake down to about a beer a week. I don't drink at home and just don't enjoy feeling inebriated anymore (i drink the NA stuff while socializing when i'm out). I'm sure my liver and kidneys thank me. How they feel about my enthusiatic marijuana consumption i don't know but i have no symptoms of anything. I do have several close friends who are drinking themselves to death. One stopped drinking nearly a year ago but it may be too late. The other one is full speed ahead despite my efforts. Really sad.

Posted by: SFGoth at January 12, 2024 03:45 AM (KAi1n)

330 The Dr's always blame alcohol, if it's consumption is known to them. Kinda like cigarettes.

Now, do not misunderstand-- I *am not saying* that either are good for a body.

First: Hubby didn't drink much. In fact, neither of us drank at all for many years. I'd bet that 90% of our cow-orkers drink more than we ever did.

Second: Hubby *did* take Tylenol-- all the time. His job was very physically demanding and as he aged, would get more aches & pains. So, he'd take more poison Tylenol. Too much. You know, if the label says "take 2" he'd take 4, because pain.

When he was so nauseated, not eating enough, and losing too much weight-- some friends brought him some Yummy Gummies to help appetite & reduce nausea.

Yay! It worked!

345 I was in Chicago when the old Comiskey Park held its last couple of games. I remember seeing a story about the new park to come where the writer explained they didn’t really have anything against the new park, except DiMaggio had never hit a home run there. The writer went on to encapsulate the history that old Comiskey Park had seen, and no matter what they did for the new park all that was going to be lost in the shuffle. I recall going there to see a game featuring a break-out year for a young Roger Clemens (who was ejected early in the game during a close play at first base).

It was a very touching and thought provoking article. It made me wish I could get tickets to one of the last few games.

That Fort? About 1 mile from our old family farm, in the middle of nowhere(upstate NY) there is a homestead settled about the same time my family did, 1st Europeans. It's squared logs as well..and there are lead balls and arrowheads embedded in the outer walls. Apparently it got a little "Sporty" around there, whether it was the earliest days, founding of Cooperstown times, or from part of the Cherry Valley Massacre period...who knows. The exact story seems to have been lost.
RE: BIG circular saws, I've built several Log Homes and Post/beam structures, there isn't anything other than a hand saw that will take the place of a 16" Circular, you can use a chainsaw, but then have to clean up the rough ends with either a porta band, planer or sander. Yeah, they throw a LOT of twisting torque at start up, but that same effect holds them straight/balanced once they are up to speed. And unless you do something REALLY stupid they don't kickback. They are NOT a saw you want to pin the guard back on, and it takes a bit of file/grinder work to adjust the leading lip of the guard so it doesn't bind at first.
