The Truth Hertz: Rental Giant to Shed 20,000 EVs -- and Gas Up Just a few months ago, Hertz committed to making electric vehicles a quarter of its rental fleet. They had already announced an intent to partner with Tesla as a major provider for their future fleet, which had pushed Tesla’s value even higher. Supposedly, the scale of the demand and usage would lower costs across the board and make fleet maintenance all that much easier for Hertz and other rental agencies. Exploding toilet at a Dunkin’ store in Florida left a customer filthy and injured, lawsuit claims ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — A customer has filed a negligence lawsuit against Dunkin’, claiming he was injured by an exploding toilet at one of the coffee chain’s locations in central Florida. Not familiar with 'Flakes'? Here you go.......... I hate to break it to you Wokesters. But volcanic activity is not caused by "Climate Change". Authorities in Iceland began detecting intense seismic activity in the Reykjanes Peninsula in November, prompting concerns that another volcanic eruption could hit the region located less than 20 miles south of Iceland’s capital. The Reykjanes Peninsula is a hotbed of volcanic activity, home to a large active volcano system that has erupted five times since 2021. About 3,600 people, most of the population of the small town of Grindavik, were evacuated in November after over 1,700 small earthquakes hit the region in just 24 hours. The volcano finally erupted on December 18, and died down a few days later. A few hundred residents were allowed to return to their homes in the following weeks since the eruption, Bloomberg reported in January. Those same residents were forced to evacuate for a second time on Saturday night. Nope, never saw this coming. LGBTQ Pride Leader Sean Gravells Arrested for Horrific Crimes Police have arrested a prominent LGBTQ leader on several charges related to horrific crimes against children, prosecutors have revealed. Prosecutors informed CBC News that former North Peace Pride Society (NPPS) President Sean Gravells was arrested on December 31 for alleged sex crimes against children. Gravells of British Columbia, Canada faces charges of sexual interference with a person under 16, physical contact with a person under 16 for sexual purposes, and possessing as well as importing or distributing child pornographic materials. Looked like an insurrection to me, how about you? An angry mob of anti-Israel protesters swarmed the White House, chanting “F**k Joe Biden” and demanding a ceasefire in Gaza in another of the temper tantrums that have erupted over U.S. support of the Jewish nation’s war on Hamas. On Saturday, thousands of Hamas supporters and left-wing extremists marched on the home of the leader of the United States government, and in an escalation from other protests, some attempted to storm the premises, coming dangerously close to breaching the reinforced gates. JANUARY 12--Prosecutors have declined to pursue a felony case against a doctor who was arrested for striking her ex-husband with a handful of bread slices she had soaked with water before throwing them at the 70-year-old victim. Heather Neeley, 58, was arrested last month following an altercation inside a St. Petersburg, Florida residence. Neeley, a licensed psychiatrist, was charged with battery on a person 65 years or older, a third degree felony. Cops reported that the victim said he was arguing with Neeley when she “grabbed a handful of bread from the loaf,” wet the bread at the kitchen sink, and hit him with the soggy slices. When deputies arrived at the house in response to a 911 call from the man, the front of his shirt was wet “with several pieces of bread stuck to the shirt.” After being read her rights, Neeley (seen at right) reportedly stated that nothing happened between her and the victim. But she “could not explain the wet bread in the garbage can of the kitchen,” cops noted. Neeley and the man divorced about eight years ago, but live together in the home, which Neeley purchased after they split. No word if she works in the relationship counseling area. 12 Darrell Harris is a name that says it all.
Posted by: Hokey Pokey at January 14, 2024 10:02 PM (as3uC) Indeed it is. I've got a question for the Horde; a request for advice, if you will. It's been a journey for me to get to this point, but I'm seriously considering getting involved in my town's politics in a more public way than I have before. We run on what is known as RTCs here in CT (Republican Town Councils). Each town has one, and I'm considering running for chair of mine. I've been happy to comment about the state of affairs from the sidelines, but seeing what Fenelon did in her town, I'm inspired to do the same in mine. CT's almost completely lost as a state, but it's beautiful and worth saving, even if it's going to take a completely useless gesture to do so. Should I do it, and if so, what should I try to accomplish? Trying to run on issues like education, taxes, or balanced budgets is actually kind of pointless here, but I feel that a Silent Majority would simply like to be able to speak their mind without fear of getting blacklisted or losing their jobs. I think that can pull the Silents out from the shadows. Any other suggestions? Posted by: Darrell Harris at January 14, 2024 10:26 PM (pEigG) 96

No one except for a small minority want an EV. Hertz has had enough.
---- It's not even necessarily about people "wanting" an EV. The obvious problem I see for a rental company is that renting an EV forces people to plan their entire trip around charging the EV - making sure their hotel has chargers or that whoever they're staying with is willing and able to provide power, locating all the local charging stations in advance, locating stations they'll need for any day trips, etc. Unless renting the EV is significantly cheaper than a normal car, people are not going to do that. I've been ruminating on the subject of plagiarism as applied to music. There are many examples but as the laws are at the moment in music one must obtain permission from whomever owns the copyright holder of said musical works and be granted such permission in writing PRIOR to using references of the copyright material. Only then may you produce a "cover".
In modern practice this means that the copyright holder must be vigilant to violations. Posted by: gourmand du jour at January 14, 2024 11:05 PM (MeG8a) 240

Remember the shooting that took place in Burlington, VT, three guys getting shot and wounded by a rando on the street in the early morning hours?
Got pumped out as white supremacist terrorism because the shootees were Arabs, two wearing pali scarves. Well, it turns out the guy was just a crazy and a lefty to boot, as reported by this left wing outlet in Burlington, Seven Days. Here is the link. https://rb.gy/oos2mj But we'll never see this reported in national news like CNN, MSNBC, NYT, etc. Gotta love the Seven Days writer, saying the three were "gunned down." What comes to mind when you read "gunned down?" Killed, you say? Why, yes. Dead. None of the three died of their wounds. The writer also sets it in the aftermath of the Oct 7 hamas attacks in Israel, a time that the Seven Days writer says generated waves of islamophobic and antisemitic attacks in the U.S. Notice "islamophobic" comes first. Where exactly those waves of attacks happened, the writer does not say. Where were they, exactly? Those islamophobic attacks? Posted by: Mr Gaga at January 14, 2024 11:24 PM (KiBMU) 281

I'm watching Williamson interview Jeremy Boreing and one of the things that annoys me is that he goes on to discuss that when the right becomes "revolutionary" it becomes dark and then starts complaining about populism.
He acknowledges since Obama the government has been turned on us and the left is in ascendance everywhere and...he still needs to mouth off like this. Let me suggest that what has happened is that if you believe what say the average Democrat did in 2004 you are now "far right" and therefore if you let the left claim the vocabulary that any rolling back of the horrors unleashed since 2004 is now "reactionary" Posted by: 18-1 at January 14, 2024 11:50 PM (ibTVg) 332

Cannibalism: there's a surprisingly long record of rulings on cannibalism in English common law courts dealing with sailors who'd been shipwrecked or stuck through disaster with no food. Generally it was held to be disgusting, but not punishable so long as they hadn't killed one of their companions just to eat him.

Why did I click on that link? Because I wanted to know.
I just tried to watch the official opening for Masters of the Air. There is even more footage of the Tuskegee Airmen in the opening than the two preceding trailers. First, the 100th Bomb Group [Heavy] belonged to the Eighth Air Force in ENGLAND. The four fighter squadrons of the Tuskegee Airmen belonged to the Fifteenth Air Force in ITALY. Once again we see guys aboard B-17s without their oxygen masks on. And with the collars open on their flight jackets. Scene of a pilot pre-flighting his B-17, why does the trailing edge of the aileron look like it is at least two inches thick? Not taken a ruler but that star on the B-17's upper left wing looks too far out for regulation. And since we get this footage of soldiers in the snow and even what appears to be Soviet soldiers helping a downed American flier, we will be treated to the Operation Frantic missions. But I fear what we will see is a very very bowdlerized recounting of history. Posted by: Anna Puma at January 15, 2024 12:24 AM (AX2+c) Posted by: JQ at January 15, 2024 12:24 AM (njWTi) 379

I have a Surface Go 2 running an 8th gen M3, 8 GB RAM, 128 GB non emmc SSD and Windows 11. It is perfectly suitable for email, web surfing, media consumption, spreadsheets, and word processing. This Beelink, with it's updated specs, should be a somewhat more robust for those tasks and should be just fine for basic computing needs. For 200 bucks it's a hell of a deal. The Surface Go 2 isn't the fastest PC on the planet, but it is small, light and allows me to do some useful computing when I'm out and about and find the need for a PC. The Beelink should fill that same need but for a home PC. Posted by: Lost in Space at January 15, 2024 01:03 AM (cywan) Posted by: JackStraw at January 15, 2024 01:04 AM (ZLI7S) 391

But, I've also bought Hornady Factory RELOADS, that were (and are) Superb. Your thoughts as to those "secondary" ammo markets? Finally. Which companies are run by the BEST people in the business? Which are run by the worst ASSHOLES, and thus best avoided? Post under "ammo-deepthroat" if you must. But it'd GOOD information which I seek! Quality control, statistical process control, multiple IR/laser sensing steps... as much IDIOT-proofed as could be... Bottom line: You, the customer, are the very best judge of any products you buy. Sadly, my local "reloader" (now retired and out of business), had a setup with high speed, individual machines for the common pistol calibers, primary rifle loadings, and more. But, he also had high-volume Dillon "manual" progressive machines. Results? His 6.5x55 140 gr. "factory new" loads, were ballistically IDENTICAL to the factory, Swedish Match 139 gr. mil-surp, which is no longer to be found. Sub-MOA stuff, from a local bullet-stuffer. The guy was not just good, he was GENIUS. (and his 148 gr. hollow-base .38spl. wadcutters were IDENTICAL to the Winchester-Western loadings of 1970s lore.) His linear-row-of-dies machine would put those out at 5,000 rounds per hour, too. When he retired, THAT unit sold to a Montana loader for $18k. The machine was (then), nearly sixty years old. Still ran like a sewing machine. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at January 15, 2024 02:55 AM (e6UQI) 422

San Diego Marshall's Department had a same brand machine, back in the '50s/'60s/'70s. Down with their basement pistol range. It loaded .38 spl, 148 gr. wadcutter, ONLY. Gent who was my shooting mentor when I was in my teens, was a S.D. Deputy Marshall. We'd go out to various outdoor ranges, with 5 gallon buckets FULL of those rounds. Never did manage to empty a full bucket, but when four shooters lower it by 3 gallons or so, that's a LOT of lead, downrange. IIRC, those were Redding linear machines. They had both electric and hydraulic components in their operation. Hardest part? Keeping the "feeds" filled with primers, powder and bullets. Neatest part? The "no go" die, at the end. "mil-surp" .38 brass (yes, it's a thing) would swell where the bullet was seated, and NOT chamber, thereafter. That die would trigger a "kicker" to eject that cartridge from the line. Mechno-Analog as hell, but it WORKED. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at January 15, 2024 03:11 AM (e6UQI) 426
>>>His linear-row-of-dies machine would put those out at 5,000 rounds per hour, too. When he retired, THAT unit sold to a Montana loader for $18k. The machine was (then), nearly sixty years old. Still ran like a sewing machine.
Til it was was declared a domestic terrorist entity and its assets were were seized by the IRS. Posted by: coyne at January 15, 2024 03:16 AM (wu4G7) 427
Sounds like cool machinery, Jim! We would pre-prime the cases before running in autoloaders. Add cases, powder, bullets... sensors for inverted/missing case, low/high powder, short round, missing bullet...
Those products were hand-inspected (rolled on a table & packaged by hand) during "my time". Posted by: JQ at January 15, 2024 03:17 AM (njWTi) 428
We didn't do secondary loads, or whatever you would call using spent (fired) brass.
I think we sold spent brass leftovers from QA testing, though. Once upon a time, anyway. Posted by: JQ at January 15, 2024 03:20 AM (njWTi) 429
Would wonder about potential for case-mouth splitting, if spent brass wasn't annealed before reuse?
Eh. Like I said, I'm not an engineer. Posted by: JQ at January 15, 2024 03:22 AM (njWTi) 430
JQ.
The local reloader NEVER processed "fired" rifle brass. Always factory new, from Starline, Winchester, Norma, PMC or such. Headstamps were always "generic" though. ONLY reycled brass was 9mm, .38/.357 and .45 ACP. Not even .40 or 10mm. All of his rifle loads were Factory New, same for .40 and 10mm. His Q.C. was by Mk.1 eyeball, and it was just HIM and ONE employee who loaded over a million rounds per year. His .38 wadcutter was HOW GOOD? I used it to work on bowling pins at 100 yards. Would average 3 of 6 from a cylinder. 4 of 6 was a good day. 5 was exceptional, and I never did manage a 6/6. Bullet drop was about 26 inches at that range, and my sight picture was NOT "conventional" as a result. At 50 yards, a "throat hold" on a standard B-27 target, would put them into the X ring. Exactly the same as their Winchester Western progenitors. They made GOOD ammo, there. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at January 15, 2024 03:31 AM (e6UQI) 431
My location stopped making rifle rounds years ago. That all went to MN, on their automated systems. (Yay! I hated rifle line)
We kept handgub calibers. Plate-load, 500 rds at a time, on a series of presses. Like I said last night-- "we did it differently" than our competitors. Posted by: JQ at January 15, 2024 03:38 AM (njWTi) 432
Over my time there, I calculate that I have personally been involved in the making of over a billion *yes, with a B* rounds.

Have Weasel send you a "brief" of Precision Handloading for match ammo. He's using tools you've never even HEARD OF, before. Your factory rounds, might have a Standard Deviation in velocity, of say, 50 fps. in each and every box of 20 rounds, each. Which is normal for factory rifle ammo. His match handloads? 7 fps, maximum. Each round was THAT close, to "identical" to the previous, and next. In theory, a "line" could be configured to produce to that precision. In reality, each round would cost $20 per, or more. The numbers and varieties of precise measurements, would astound, even you. Tools I've never heard of? Interesting. "We" have a world-class machine shop on location... things that make microns look like volleyballs... Posted by: JQ at January 15, 2024 03:59 AM (njWTi) 439
Line-mfr'd am.mo is just that: mass produced.
I like to think that "we" made the best. Certainly, the potential existed. Once the millenials came on board? eeeeehhhh, maybe not so much anymore... Posted by: JQ at January 15, 2024 04:01 AM (njWTi) 440

Jim, it's easier to get 'perfect' powder weight when handloading. Just use the scale.
In mass production, it's volume that's manipulated, to determine charge weight. In the interest of speed, of course. Posted by: JQ at January 15, 2024 04:13 AM (njWTi) Posted by: coyne at January 15, 2024 04:17 AM (wu4G7) 445

I think we did a fine job, considering-- most pistol rounds contained powder weights of single-digit grains-- and we stayed within spec for runs of 100s of thousands at a stretch.
Not everyone is capable (or willing!) to grow their own am.mo. We made great results for average shooters possible. Posted by: JQ at January 15, 2024 04:24 AM (njWTi) 447
Jim, if you're still here...
I can't imagine that 50fps deviation makes so much difference, except in a controlled situation such as competition. Reliability is critical! I've shaken hands with LE customers, who wanted to express personal thanks during their visit-- for saving their life or helping them take down a terrible criminal-- because it was Our Product that they carried. Priceless! Posted by: JQ at January 15, 2024 04:50 AM (njWTi) 448
There was a cop-shooter in Seattle some years ago... gunned some LE down in a coffee shop but got hisself gut-shot in the exchange & died a bit later.
Turns out it was Our GoldDot what took his worthless ass out. Posted by: JQ at January 15, 2024 05:30 AM (njWTi) Processing 0.07, elapsed 0.0698 seconds. |
