Daily Tech News 11.5

Top Story

  • Tech industry layoffs are a thing of the past now that the tech industry has stopped hiring altogether. (Vice)

I'm not sure exactly what is going on here. Yes, the economy is doing worse than politicians or the press will admit, but not that much worse. Yes, AI is eating more jobs than it creates, but it's basically a pile of garbage so it's not doing much of anything except selling Nvidia's graphics cards.

Hopefully tech journalists will be the first to go, because the analysis provided by Vice is worse than useless.

Tech News

  • LLMs make bad lawyers. (The Register)

Because - as usual - the only thing they know is statistically what words are most likely to go together.

  • If you're annoyed by the trend of motherboards having hardly any expansion slots anymore ASRock's WRX90 WS Evo should bring a tear to your eye. (Tom's Hardware)

It has seven full x16 PCIe 5.0 slots, plus two M.2 slots and two U.2 ports, and eight DIMM slots. I/O includes eight USB ports, dual 10Gb Ethernet ports, audio including optical output, and integrated WiFi.

    Won't be cheap though.

  • Since there are no PCIe 5.0 graphics cards maybe you could use one of those slots for Crucial's new T700 8TB SSD. (Tom's Hardware)

This is actually four 2TB T700 drives on a PCIe card, cooled by those new silent piezoelectric fans from Frore.

Transfer rates can hit 42GB per second, which is a lot.

69 Had such a nice day yesterday. The power was out from 11:30 Wednesday night until yesterday at 2:45 pm or so. Spouse was off from work because school was cancelled because of flooding so we took a ride to the park where Washington crossed the Delaware on Christmas Day in 1776, saw a movie and visited their museum. It was interesting. We'd been there before several times but it was nice to go again with son before he goes back to school. We got him a shirt which says "Unite or die" which was a saying at the time and I got one which says "Victory or death." Then we went out to lunch at a beautiful old historic inn. When we came back the power had been restored.

I had never looked at them, but after Pixy mentioned NUCs yesterday I started browsing some on ebay and they are very tempting as dedicated Plex servers. You can get tiny little HPs (prodesk?) for under $100 with fairly modern i5 processors.

It looks like they're not much bigger than a double pack blu-ray case.

The NUC's are absurdly expensive, so those are a non-starter.

I have numerous RPI4 serving different purposes around the house, and one is being used as a Plex Server/Media Server.

The also make great Batocera/RetroPI Arcade systems.

But, again, The Pi Foundation really needs to crack down on their distribution as it seems that most of them get bought up by speculators to be sold on the alt-market for large mark ups.

112 What cracks me up is that this whole SecDef kerfuffle is entirely the result of vanity and laziness.

"SecDef will be out of office briefly. Acting SecDef meanwhile will be so and so." Done. No story. No drama. This is why organizations have a chain of command. Instead we have either (A) No clear mechanism for replacement if something happens or (B) Nobody even notices or cares if your dumb ass disappears for two weeks anyway. Either of which does precious little to instill confidence in the office and the organization.

Amatuers.

I think it's probably because of the name and that's what people know to search for, but the direct competitors like this $60 HP mini exist if folks have an old HDD laying around and are capable of putting a $30 windows license on it (or running linux, but realistically most people are going to use windows)

ebay.com/itm/285557434519

that's a very capable modernish system that would suit 85% of the population for day to day stuff for $100. That's incredible.

159 I just read Chris Christie dropped out saying he doesn't want in any way to help Trump become president again- that Trump "must never be president again".

No Nevertrumper has ever articulated what it is that Trump did as president that was so terrible (unless you are an idiot and truly believe Jan 6 was an "insurrection" and that Trump led it). Was it his trade policy? His foreign policy? Nobody every spells out what hideous thing they think Trump did as president.

Put aside whether you like trump or not or support trump or not, what did he DO as president that was so horrible that he "must never be president again"?

Seriously? What? I was alive and cognizant his entire tenure and I can't think of anything he did as president that was so terrible and beyond the pale.

I'm truly curious as to what these people think Trump did that was so terrible.
