Pissarro Orchard1.jpg

Orchard in Bloom, Louveciennes
Camille Pissarro

The first thing I noticed about this work was the light. It is a bright, near-cloudless spring day. The French sun hangs high in the sky, creating bright highlights and little shadow. The light brightens the colors and flattens the forms. The blooming white flowers on the trees glow in the sunlight against its greens and grays. The brown in the field is not an ugly, muddy color but a light, warm tan. Few greens are used here. The grasses and leaves are just starting to grow in. For me, this allows white to dominate the painting.

Pissarro designed his painting with a low horizon, emphasizing the sky. The large blue shape of the sky is dotted with patches of white clouds – some puffy, some streaky. The clouds arc across the sky, looking like a huge dome.

In this work, the horizon does not form the usual boundary between earth and sky. Sure, Pissarro colors separate the regions. Below, browns and greens dominate while above are blue and white. A long picket fence or wall runs the length of the canvas along that line in the background. However, that horizontal is interrupted by the many verticals of the trees. They break out of their terrestrial plane into the other. One tall, skinny tree in the back stabs into the blue sky while the branches of the bare tree in front of it zig-zag through. The large tree on the left thrusts into the sky and spreads its branches. The cluster of small blossoms resemble the puffy clouds. The green leaves have a similar intensity to the blue and, to me, blend together.

The artist’s technique is quick and sketchy. He was an Impressionist but preferred the simple, everyday life of rural communities. He is painting in the open air and captures the lighting and colors accurately. The figures are simplified and unemphasized and almost get lost in the work.

It’s interesting how different people react to the same work of art. CBD thought there was a disconnect between elements of the painting. To him, the lighting seemed to say it was fall or winter, but the trees said spring. He found it odd. On the other hand, I think the brightness of the light and the lack of shadow complements the season. It’s bright and sunny. The ground is not muddy and gross. The trees are blooming and probably smell wonderful. After a long winter, these things can be uplifting to the soul. I know after the winter I’ve had, I cannot wait for spring.

104 It's barely February so still too short of days, too cold for fruit trees. But my orange tree should be getting close to enough sugar in them now to pick. Been another wet year and that helps a lot. Hand watering city water isn't a good substitute as rain water.

I really worry about my orange tree. She's a champion near as old as I am.

Three people consume one hour of content per day on average.
One of the three decides to quit porn because its consuming more of his life.
The other two let it consume more of their lives.
Two people consume two hours of content per day on average.

The total just went up. And it's far easier than that in reality because 1/3 of the market isn't deciding to exit.

This is an (im)moral panic on the Left because porn is extremely important to their social engineering. *Any* evidence of people checking out from it needs to be suppressed. Any advocacy from their peers that maybe people shouldn't do or watch porno is much more dangerous and hated. This doesn't appear to be a large-scale movement, but the Left is treating it like it is.

I had that system as well at other companies. This particular one was straight up $50/day, no receipts needed. It was a line item on expense reports, per day. And even better, travel days counted as well. So if I for example, had a 7pm flight, I got $50 for that day as well, even though I usually wouldn't eat anything since I'd eat at home before leaving.

The money was nice and also it was great to not worry about receipts.

173 Trillions of gallons of rain have already fallen on the state of California, and more rain continues to fall as I write this article. Billions of dollars in damage has already been done, but of even greater concern is what all of this water could mean for southern California’s fault lines. As you will see below, geophysicists have discovered that the additional weight that flooding puts on fault lines can help trigger earthquakes.

Why are so many robots white? Mark Paterson, University of Pittsburgh

Problems of racial and gender bias in artificial intelligence algorithms...also arise in social robots, which have physical bodies modeled on nonthreatening versions of humans...So, to adapt the famous Twitter hashtag, why #robotssowhite?

If multi racial dolls are finally accepted and manufactured and necessary why not the same for robots?[/i

Why make it about race at all? There's enough real racism without inventing some. If everything becomes a matter of race - then nothing is.

Because it's important! Kenneth and Mamie Clark investigated how Black children viewed their racial identities. Given a choice between Black and white dolls, Black children preferred to play with white dolls, and ascribed positive characteristics to the white dolls but negative characteristics to the Black ones.

The Clarks concluded that Black children – as a result of living in a racist society – had come to see themselves in a negative light.

The best Indian meal I've ever had was in the awful city of Boston. I was there on business. We agreed on Indian food and one of our party was in for the meeting from India. He asked us if we liked spicy food and if we were picky. We all agreed that we did and we weren't.

He said he'd take care of ordering. He took our menus, spoke with our waiter in their native tongue for a while, and that was that.

One of the first places we found in this little, rural corner of NC was an Indian place. I ordered online and told them to make it as hot as possible.

I showed up, and the guy (he might have been Nepalese, but he definitely wasn't Indian) looked at me like I was going to melt my head with what I was taking away. He told me to be careful.

I've never eaten anything so hot that I could never finish it, and that was not an exception. It was pretty hot, though. I want to go back. It was delicious. I love Indian food.

Several factors, I think
1. Proliferation. There is more of it than there used to be, and more variety. This is especially true in major cities. It's a cheap way to get into the restaurant business and lots of people did it, especially various ethnic groups.
2. Quality. Most "roach coaches" are not the unsanitary shitholes they used to be.
3. Price. Cheaper than a restaurant (usually)
4. Hipness. This is probably the most important factor. The yutes found them endearing and social media promotion and algorithms took care of the rest.

I don't even remember the name of the town (but could figure it out easily), when visiting Capitol Reef NP, we stayed in a lovely cabin, and just across the parking lot, a burger truck would roll up every evening, and the whole town it seems would swarm up to it.

When we finally got around to trying it, I could see why. Truly, most burgers are just burgers, which is to say, they're fine. They taste good, they're satisfying, but this is one of those places, the burgers are transformative.

Being Utah though, on Sunday, the truck didn't come.

We did not know however that there were no free refills. He kept pounding the coffee and was shocked by the bill after. LOL.

Plus, she's on her 3rd marriage. After a superstar husband like Seal, she's married to some guy in a no-name German band. She probably feels she deserves more, but had to settle.

390 Methinks its the Busch family trying to lever their company away from InBev. They were not happy about what InBev did to their family's company.

I do wonder, the old man, whose father and grandfather built the company, made it the powerhouse it was, would parade around Busch Stadium in St. Louis on a wagon pulled by Clydesdales.

It was a proud family, with a proud heritage... and then then sons/grandsons sold the thing to Belgians.

Empires die. Ozymandias is a broken statue, covered in sand.

In Japan, it's culturally assumed that the kids taking over a company will ruin it. They have a specific word for that happening. They're smart.

392 "The first thing I noticed about this work was the light."

The first thing I noticed was what a sorry excuse for an orchard this is. Horrible condition.

393 Go there. Seriously. Book a hotel, pick up a map, and go walk around. Have a car, too, if you can. But go.

I've been there. It's an interesting place.

Nashville is nice too. Sort of an artist colony type of town. Great art galleries and shops selling all sorts of artisan stuff. From jams and jelly to leather jackets and boots. Baskets, books, fudge, jewelry.... There's something for almost everyone. I'm partial to the fudge shops and the shop that sells nuts. Fresh, roasted cashew nuts are like crack to me. The ice cream shops are good too.

394 I'm so sorry, Cheri. No one should have to eulogize their own child.

I had a co-worker whose son committed suicide. He gave the eulogy, and did so with great dignity and without breaking down. But it was still heartbreaking to see.

Thank you so much. Your co-worker was a very brave man - it is always tragic and gut wrenching to lose a child, but suicide has got to be the worst. It does my heart good to hear how he handled it with dignity and grace.

395 Cheri - 100% this.
My daughter (27yrs old) has been diagnosed with an aggressive breast cancer. I am pleading and praying for a good outcome, and dread the thought of losing her.

My heart felt prayers for your daughter and your family for a good outcome. The road will be tough, but there are truly miracles that happen in these cases and never lose hope. You will be a rock for her as parents are when their children are hurting. Hugs {}
