Effective January 31st, Wayne LaPierre is OUT as head of the NRA! As I have said a bunch of times, this guy has drawn too much negative attention from within the organization and had become nothing more than a major distraction from the stated purpose of the organization. I don't know if any (or all) of the accusations of financial irregularities are true, but even if a few of them have merit, well, I truly hope he suffers the legal consequences. Adios Wayne! The Antano was one of the sticks that put the company on the map in the premium cigar world. Haven't tried it - it's reportedly a powerhouse stick that would probably be above my strength preference - but the company did a slick thing and took the same blend, but aged the filler for a few extra years first. This mellows the experience. The Antano Gran Reserva, I figured, was more in my lane. And so it is. A beautiful dark brown, softly box-pressed cigar, it's soft in the hand and has a rich sweet aroma before lighting. The draw was easy, the smoke as voluminous and thick as any I've yet seen, the burn line required little touching up. For flavors, a rich earthy and tobacco sweetness best sums it up for me. This stick falls in the medium-full spot on the spectrum. You can find it online for around $7.Bigly excellent as always, rhomboid! Thank you! Recvd my 2nd 1911A1 from CMP this past week. It was a field grade (mid grade) Remington Rand Frame, Colt SLide that left the factory in January 1945. That hits my lifetime limit, so I'm going to have to bug Mrs Dude next year to put in for one.
I got a service grade last time ) Remington Rand Frame and Slide) that left the factory in March 1945. They also have a small lot of M1917 rifles just in after a loooong absence - the American Enfield (30 06 caliber)- mostly from the Eddystone manufacturing plant. They still have garands and they shouldn't run out until years end for all you fence sitters out there. Don't be like me when I didn't order the CMP M-1 carbines and ended up paying 2-3 times as much later from the private market after CMP ran out. OK, I've got a few things this week....
Range report: I took my son to the range Wednesday. It was a member's only day (I used one of my free passes). And the place was kinda packed. My son's AR is now working (he cleaned it and possibly banged on it some), but he ended up causing a problem. I didn't know it was possible to short-stroke the charging handle on an AR. But he did - riding it forward after maybe not pulling it back all the way. So he charged it again without looking... and lo and behold he had 2 rounds in there. It took stripping the magazine out hard to get it to let go of the last bit of the rim so he could clear the weapon. 1/? Posted by: GWB at January 07, 2024 07:22 PM (sSx7k) 54

He has a red-dot on the rifle and it zeros pretty well. Even when you take it off to put in the rifle case and put it back on at the range. Yeah, we talked about that.
I think he also needs to push it a little further out over the ejection port. It seemed awfully tight for me. Then we worked a drill I had targets for. It involves 6 targets and you put 3 on 1, then 2 on the next strong-hand, then 2 on the next weak hand, etc. There's a magazine change in there. We didn't go for time, but we'll work up to that. He definitely needs some work on his pistoling. He is definitely anticipating the shot. (He was doing that with the AR, btw. When I noticed, he improved.) He is also ... the grip on the G3C for him seems to necessitate actually putting MORE of the finger on the trigger. It helped bring his shots back from the left when he tried that. 2/? @42 Thomas - yep they have all 3 grades of H&R and Springfirld M-1 Garand (service 900 bucks, field - 800 bucks and rack grade 700 bucks). Thats a steal at those prices. They are getting down to the end so many of them have new walnut stocks.
They also have some International Harvesters (new barrels and stocks) for 1450 . They have some chambered in 308 also (new barrels) for matches. at 1150. These prices are great if you compare them to gunbroker etc. Plus they do a lot to promote marksmanship in young people. Posted by: The Walking Dude at January 07, 2024 07:27 PM (cCxiu) 62

Just a mere couple of hours ago, I received a cotton drawstring bag, chok-fulla assorted screw-in shotgun chokes of all gauges and constrictions.
Also in the bag was a kit, about 6"x2"x1", marked "Perazzi", in which was a specialized wrench, two mainsprings, and what appears to be a pair of automatic ejector plungers with springs. Now, knowing a bit about Perazzi shotguns, I'm thinking that this is one HELL of a spendy wee bit of kit. I'm going to have to meticulously sort, catalog and research each and every choke in the bag. There's one rather comprehensive Browning set in there, ten chokes and a wrench. Some are stainless, but most are blued steel. Oh, and one wee tiny but gorgeous, set of .410 chokes. Fun project, ahead! Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at January 07, 2024 07:28 PM (e6UQI) 64

My carry weapon shot better than it has. I used a boresight recently to confirm the sights are actually NOT my problem. But I was able to pay attention to proper technique and put a bunch of bullets in the center of various targets. I also forgot to follow the rules on the drill target and didn't shoot strong hand on that bullseye. We'll get there.
BTW, I had also cleaned my carry weapon. I think that helped, as I had ZERO FTFs, FTEs, or jams. Which brings me to a review... 3/? Posted by: GWB at January 07, 2024 07:30 PM (sSx7k) 67

Happy New Year fellow enthusiasts!
After a month's hiatus, I have a range report! (you can tell I'm enthusiastic by all the exclamation points!) Because I promised myself a new purchase in the new year and have been eyeing buying another Glock, I asked the members ofthe DMV MGC to bring their favorite 9mms so I could try out some other models and get to shoot side by side with my G48. Got to shoot a HiPower, actually 2 different models, a P99 and a P226. Considering the layoff, I was surprised at how well I shot no matter what I picked up but Wow, the P226 was great. Now I don't knwo what to do. Thought this would make the decision easier but instead it's more difficult. And expensive because I think I will need to buy 2 now. Did weasel say practice your fundamentals?
Yes he did. So, I took my bedside 1911 to the range and shot 50 rounds. Very slowly. Very deliberately. Focused on breathing, sight alignment and pulling the trigger straight back. I also put some attention into my posture. Engaging my core. Forcing my shoulders down. Not clenching my jaw. Good day at the range. Posted by: nurse ratched at January 07, 2024 07:32 PM (bTaUx) 72

I bought Liberal Tears gun lube for me and my son for Christmas. What the heck, it was a stocking stuffer.
Well, it actually does smell like bacon, so it has that going for it. However, it is in a pump spray bottle. Which means you canNOT actually target locations on your weapon. And it IS a protectant and such, so it doesn't just wipe off. What I ended up doing was cleaning my 1911, then spraying this in some places showing wear. Then I sprayed cleaner back on the parts of the weapon I didn't want lubed. And I cleaned it all off. This seems a wasteful way to lube your weapon. Next time I will try using a sheet of cardboard with a hole in it to try and limit where this stuff goes. 4/? Well. I guess I'll have to look at the video, "For Older Shooters".
Actually prefer the one with the dancing girl. I have a small pistol that has a grip feature, kind of like a rasp, on the outside, front of the trigger guard. I assume they are prompting me to put my off hand forefinger there as part of a grip. Never have. If the grip guy were to shoot my 1911 he might end up with a bloody purlicue. I have. I also worked on my AR Beowulf build this week. Or I tried to. Unfortunately, the same thing that stymied me previously was still a problem: the bolt catch roll pin just will NOT go into the hole for it.
So, I emailed PSA, where I bought the lower. It's one of their special engraving ones (F15s and nukes) and I really want to use it for the .50 cal. PSA service is GREAT! After a little email back and forth and sending them some pictures, they have sent me a new roll pin that is smaller. They did warn me I will have to smack it hard to get it in. I have a new tool for that (more in a moment). One thing I did that I think helped is I put my almost unused calipers to work. I checked the outside dimensions of the pin, then used the other side of the calipers to check the inside diameter of the hole. It's hard to fit a .101 roll pin inside a .092 hole. Yay! I used my calipers, and used them properly! 5/? Posted by: GWB at January 07, 2024 07:38 PM (sSx7k) 82

Anyway, LaPierre going is only a first step. The board members who have been supporting and running interference for him have to go as well. So, that tool I picked up...
There was a set of them on the wall, just two punches. One regular for the roll pin (except it's coated with rubber and flat on one side to fit a little better), and one that is recessed to hold a pin you haven't yet gotten into the hole! It's the Wheeler Bolt Catch Install Tool Kit. I paid $12.99 for it at the local pawn/gun shop. (The only gun place around here with an adequate parts selection. I've bought several magazines there for my 1911s.) I was in there to look for something else (which I also bought - a night sight for my carry 1911, which I now have to learn how to install) and was browsing and this caught my eye. So, bonus to the range trip and the Liberal Tears! (BTW, my carry weapon still smelled slightly like bacon after shooting about 50 rounds through it.) 6/6 Posted by: GWB at January 07, 2024 07:43 PM (sSx7k) 92

Saw that Ayoob video when it came out last year. Since I'm close to his age I wanted to hear what he said. The part dealing with aging eyes was helpful. After the recent cataract surgery, I'm happy to say my eyes are no longer an excuse for 'interesting' targets. The part about less hand strength is true. I compensated by switching to semi-autos that are easier to rack which is why I carry a Smith Equalizer now. Much easier to use than the earlier M and P Shield series. I do have to concentrate more on trigger discipline these days, especially for DA revolvers. That's not a bad thing. It helps that I no longer go for heavy recoil loads. Mild and accurate is more fun.

Anthony Vanderlinden's most recent edition of his magnum opus of FN pistols from 1900 to today (in print and available now, BTW) says that the Belgian Gendarmerie requested FN to make these lightweight alloy variants specifically for them in the late 1970s through the 1980s. Some other Belgian PDs also received this variant, but only a few were commercially sold. Apparently, FN never promoted or advertised this lightweight variant. The pistol itself carries no markings identifying it as a lightweight alloy model. The only way to tell the difference between it and a steel version is to pick it up. Lots of people don’t consider philosophy of use. Is it just for you? Does it include family members? Does it include a circle of close trusted friends? Is it for practice? Is it for real? Posted by: Oddbob ------ The P95 is more refined and does not have some of the teething problems that the P85 I and II or the P89 had. Actually has a nice DA/SA trigger if you have the DC only model and a nice double action trigger if you come across the relatively rare Ruger DAO variants. The slide safety (or decocker) is a bit of a pain on the early models and can chew your hand up with repeated strings of fire. They work best with medium to large size hands. THE reference book about the M1911's history from the first automatic pistol trials in 1900 through 1945, with LOTS of details about anything could think of about M1911 minutia remains Charles W. Clawson's "Colt .45 Service Pistols, Models of 1911 and 1911A1." 30 plus years after its publication, it remains the gold standard of M1911 references that everyone else draws from. Because of the huge interest by collectors in the M1911, and its out of print status, the price of this book on the secondary market has skyrocketed. If you're serious about getting this book, be prepared to pay as much as $2,000. That should tell you how in demand this book is. Among collectors, this volume is known as "The Big Book." Posted by: sharon(willow's apprentice) --------- Tritium glows in the dark due to radioactivity and thus are called night sights. Euro night sights though are often photo phosphorescent where you 'charge' the sights with a bright light before expected use (most places in Euroland tightly restrict firearms for individual citizens and so cops don't mind the delay in charging sights that way.) Not all Sigs have night sights. The beavertails, I think are on the premium makes of Sigs but I haven't paid much attention to the Sig P series in years. Clawson also published another book about commercial Colt Government Models and its variants (Ace, Commander, etc.) titled "Colt .45 Government Models (Commercial Series)." This book covers commercially produced Colt Government Models and civilian market variants from 1912 through about 1970. Like its bigger brother, this volume is also out of print and increasingly difficult to find. To meet collector demand for a book covering the markings and characteristics of M1911/M1911A1 production, Clawson published the "Collector's Guide to Colt .45 Service Pistols, Models of 1911 and 1911A1." This book summarizes much of what's in the "Big Book," but leaves out the technical and historical details found there. This is the most common Clawson book encountered today. The other reference besides Clawson for M1911 history is the three-volume series by Edward Scott Meadows, "US Military Automatic Pistols." Volume 1 covers the period from 1894-1920. Volume 2 covers the period from 1920-1945. Volume 3 covers the period from 1946-2012. Although the M1911 remains a main character in all three volumes, Meadows also looks at other automatic pistols tested/used by the US military. Volume 1 includes numerous submissions from firms for the many trials and tests the Army conducted prior to 1911. Volume 2 includes the numerous non-standard pistols used for training and service in WWII. Volume 3 covers the numerous M1911 refurbishment efforts, the M9 and M11 trials and testing, and special operations pistols such as the H&K Mark 23 and Mark 24 (H&K Compact Tactical), and the Mark 25 (SiG Sauer P226). P365, of course
It was almost pitched into RancherBob's pond at a MoMe after an egregiously bad day on the range in October 2021. Now I think we are committed to each other. I’m thinking of getting one for DILIT after she’s used to her G44. Posted by: RI Red --- I think my favorite thing is - I was a total noob when I bought it, and I'm hopelessly unmechanical. But even I could learn how to operate it easily (if not well) and I can field strip and reassemble it with a minimum of profanity. It's tiny and lightweight. I have been practicing carrying it with a Liberty Band and it's reasonably comfortable. In anyone's hands but mine, it's accurate. Mine has been very reliable (and I've put A LOT of rounds through trying to get better). You can get 12 or 15 round extended mags for my model, and I think the XLs can take even larger mags. (I have a couple 12 round mags and I shoot better with those - a little extra real estate for better grip.) I don't love it like I love my 1911 or my revolvers, but I think it was a good purchase. Mine is the smallest model with no bells or whistles (or chainsaw bayonets) and cannot accommodate any optics. It ran about $500 3 years ago. That's my review. YMMV. Does yours have the DC moniker on the Ruger plastic box? The DC stands for DeCocker only where the lever only decocks back to Double Action from Single Action. The true DAO is double action and has a plug where the decocker/safety would be in the other two variants DA/SA or DC models. Here is a pix at Classic Firearms for reference on what the DAO looks like.
http://tinyurl.com/55e8ewb6 Posted by: whig Ah, corrected I have been, Box says "KP95D", Manual says, 'Do not use this manual for pistols equiped with manual safeties or "Double Action Only" pistols'. Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher at January 07, 2024 08:59 PM (cOq4q) 244

Posted by: blaster ------ Heh, Smith and Wesson did that in the 80's and 90's with the 69xx series and its predecessor 2nd generation series. Some of the finest pistols Smith and Wesson ever made and pretty affordable on the used market. Only downside is somewhat heavy and only two grip sizes for the 69xx. The firearm market moves in circles and I am amused by the sudden reappearance of new models of metal framed handguns. I guess polymer market has reached saturation point. For a more affordable alternative to the "top of the heap" books above, Joe Poyer's "The Model 1911 and Model 1911A1 Military and Commerical Pistols" is in print and available on Amazon for $35.95. This book has all of the technical details given in the Clawson books (slide markings, serial number ranges, grip composition, inspection stamps, etc.), but it leaves out almost all of the historical context that makes the Clawson books super desirable (probably for copyright reasons). Posted by: blaster at January 07, 2024 08:56 PM You can do the same thing with a 12-round magazine (and now have 15 and 17's available). There is some advantage to the 3.7" barrel on the XL, particularly if you want to run a red dot (IMHO). Sig has lots of mix and match now with the 3.1 and 3.7" barrels, and the regular, XL, and Macro grip module variants. Box says "KP95D", Manual says, 'Do not use this manual for pistols equiped with manual safeties or "Double Action Only" pistols'. Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher ------- You have a nice fairly uncommon pistol that a lot of people prefer to the safety equipped model. I do know that the K prefix for the P series refers to stainless steel. The DAOs were to help older cops that used to fire revolvers by giving them a similar trigger press and weight. It became a market issue so Sig made their DAK models aimed mainly at the LEO market and even H&K came out with the LEM trigger. Posted by: whig at January 07, 2024 09:03 PM (81RcT) 255

I always point in safe direction when 'decocking', and generally would trust that over cowboy techniques. Posted by: Itinerant Alley Butcher No, by the time that revolvers were leaving the police forces, most required recruits to be taught to use them in double action only--no cocking. Some like NYPD were further and made then ordered them where the single action notch was eliminated on the hammer and the trigger spur was ground off. The DAO semi autos were like a DAO only revolver, you could only shoot them with a heavier trigger press--none of the crunch en tick of the DA/SA. The DAO also usually had the hammers rendered where you can't cock them so the police could not be sued by people alleging such. When it comes to brand loyalty, mine would be Ruger single action revolvers. Smith K-frames are wonderful but the Ruger SA just work for me. And they are more or less indestructible. I have a 357 Blackhawk and a Single-Six convertible from 1955. They still shoot superbly even after many, many thousands of rounds.

>>> It seemed counter intuitive to me. Being a woman, small hands, petite person, the tiny, lighter gun should have worked. But, it didn't. The longer barrel and heavier gun made for less recoil.
There is a YouTuber (Outlaw something..) that reviews a lot of guns and that is a common point he hits - bigger heavier gun with light slide and traditional hammer (vs striker) has less recoil --> race gun... and good gun for those with weaker grips. His review of the Ruger Security 380 is why I got one for Wifey to try. She had no problem with Dad's Kimber 45, but relative to her size it is a bit clubby. Gubs are like shoes. What fits me probably won't fit you. Shoes are (usually) made for a specific purpose. They are best for that purpose. You wouldn't wear your dress shoes for a 5k run, nor would you wear flip flops to a formal event. That snub nosed .38 Colt Detective Special isn't what you'd use for a long range competition with 50 yard targets. And you don't want to even try to conceal carry an H&K Mark 23. So you get more gubs for the specific purposes you have in mind. And the list keeps growing, and growing... Posted by: Ed L at January 07, 2024 09:35 PM (yRXSd) 340

Posted by: Diogenes at January 07, 2024 09:38 PM (W/lyH) 350
Something else to keep in mind, a narrower grip will give more felt recoil than a wider grip. In addition, metal is more unyielding than wood, and wood is more unyielding than polymer/rubber and that will also affect felt recoil as will the actual design of the grips. This is something that becomes more important if you like older firearms. Wood grips are stylish but the old splinter type grips in something like a Colt Cobra or Detective can generate unpleasantness to your hand similar to smacking them with a ruler each time you fire something like the FBI load.
PPK in 380 ACP is a classic example--extremely narrow grip that makes it great to conceal but quite a bit of felt recoil when fired. Posted by: whig at January 07, 2024 09:38 PM (81RcT) 351

I'm a Beretta 92FS fan. I fired many, many, many rounds through it and I can remember that the misfires could be counted on one hand. And they were all reloads.
The late Louis Awerbuck used my Beretta to demonstrate the "prison grab" (that's what i call it) where the perp grabs the slide from the top and presses the slide release at the same time. After the third try, he finally pulled it off (so to speak) and it took me 15 minutes to find the recoil spring. Good times. Posted by: mrp at January 07, 2024 09:55 PM (rj6Yv) 380
