(Graduation for vtubers means the talent is leaving that company, so the personality that people know will no longer be around.

This might mean they are retiring from the business entirely, like Sana from Hololive Council, who is a successful commercial artist in real life, or a familiar voice might pop up somewhere else the very next day, like Kiryu Coco or Pikamee.)

Got a math problem wrong on an IQ test yesterday, I never heard of BEDMAS before:

BEDMAS, standing for Brackets, Exponents, Division/Multiplication, Addition/Subtraction is common in Canada and New Zealand

I went 'dear aunt sally' on it. There were no brackets, but maybe it was the exponent I f'd up. Ruined my day.

So I just screwed up and didn't do the division first.

When I was writing code I could never trust the compiler for order of operation so I would break everything down into a separate line of code.

Grew up in Las Vegas. One year (in between colleges) worked for a guy installing large 14' satellite antennas ('82-'83), and we got a booth at the CES show that year.

I have two general memories:

(1) on the last day every vendor was selling the equipment they had brought along to demo to attendees at heavily discounted prices to avoid the costs of delivering them back their homes; and

(2) in the middle of The Las Vegas Convention Center was a circular bubble of curtains with an entrance where ID was checked (I'd just turned 21) for entrance to what was a bunch of pornographic-based video games (I mean, I remember watching in disgust as one was basically about catching and raping as many avatar women in as many different ways as possible).

It really is amazing that, historically, porn drives new technologies ...

The biggest agencies (Hololive and Nijisanji) are Japanese, and there's a fair amount of Japanese cultural influence throughout the industry. But it's gone global now, and there's smaller western agencies like Phase Connect (which is where Pippa is) and a huge number of independent streamers both large and small.

I think the tricky part was knowing that 3 divided by 1/3rd is nine and not 1. But if you had three pies and you cut one third of each you end up with nine slices. Seems counter intuitive.

I loved English and writing and would always score in the 99% range in standardized tests, but never took any higher math beyond algebra. My SAT scores in math and English were virtually the same. I must have guessed correctly a whole lot in math.

There is a certain logic involved in guessing though.

When doing all that fancy schmancy mathing and rearranging Greek letters back in the gap, i tried to do things as if it were all multiplication. Never x divided by y, but x times one-over-y. It helps avoid association and OoO mistakes. "

(3 * (1/1)) * (1/3) is completely unambiguous.

Negative exponents help too. But I'm not even trying to type that shit out.

One does well to learn this language.

It's piss poor at describing subjective things we value, like beauty, love, etc. And never the twain should meet. We have a lot of problems from mixing these two "languages".

Yep, that was the point where I decided I'd had enough. I could do it, but it wasn't pleasant.

When it got to the point in my high school career that I had to bring home books and study and fill out homework papers, I was done with math after two years of Algebra. No more, thank you very much.

Ended up with a career writing financial software with high end languages. Low level Math sorta became fun again.

He was a Christian but married to a Jewish woman. He's been dead about a decade now so no one can tell him but my sister came up hot on a DNA test for Ashkenazim gene - undoubtedly from his German ancestry. The world's a funny place.

Let's clarify "open in" vs "open out". In the fully open position, the actual door can be outside the aircraft. But, for all of them, in the closed position, the door is wider than the frame its pushing against. To open it, it must pull in, the tilt a bit to fit through the narrower opening.

Now, 12k' vs whatever interior pressure. Add up the total force from even that small pressure difference over the entire door. It's huge.

I was a flight engineer at one time in my life. At 12,000 ft, there is only about a 1 psi differential, if that much. Maybe a couple hundred pounds.
The exit is a hatch that pushes out. It never enters the plane. Pull the lever and it swings up. So either a passenger pulled the handle or a lug failed very prematurely.

I looked this up. Typical cabin pressure is maintained about at the equivalent of 8000'. That's the minimum pressure allowed, I think. It can be higher.

Call that 11 psi absolute. 12,000' ft. pressure, it's about 9.3 psi. That's nearly a 2 psi difference over the area of the door. That's how much force is transmitted to the door lip.

That failed on this plane.

Force is dp/dt. When m is constant, that's mdv/dt.

Actually its the other way around. Newton derived f=ma first, and because he considered mass to be a constant he moved it inside the differential operator. f = dp/dt fails if m is a variable quantity. I have actually seen the FORTRAN source code for some of NASA's rocket software, and checked to see which equation it uses.

Physics students are cautioned to use f = dp/dt with "sophistication". The sophistication consists of getting the vdm/dt term to zero so that the mdv/dt term yields the correct answers. Oddly no other physics equations require such "sophistication" before one uses them.

The physicists who followed Newton chose f = dp/dt over f=ma because it is mathematically more elegant, not because it is the more accurate equation.

Me too. I loved geometry, and did very well in it; that one could take a handful of theorems and from them build a huge, elaborate construct of pure logic appealed to me very strongly. What was most helpful was that I could visualize what was being talked about. But calculus? I couldn't visualize it; for me, it was the application of a set of rules that had been designed specifically to torment me. Here, computer-based instruction was very helpful, both in breaking down the material into bite-sized chunks, and in its infinite patience in presenting material and correcting my mistakes. In math as in energy, Sarah Palin's rule applies: "Drill, baby, drill!"

Everything is. Everything is made in China because it's the cheapest option, Chinese factories don't care about QA and it's too expensive for the brandowners to enforce it. The Western designers don't care about quality in the design either. At one time it used to be possible to spend more for better quality; now everything falls apart in three years regardless of the brand or price.
