Sometimes A Great Notion: An ONT

Hello, and welcome to Friday night! So what does everyone think 2024 has in store for us?

TP grater.jpg

Personally I'm doing a bit better, although I spend as much of the day as possible lying down. I don't cough when I'm lying down, and I do when I sit up. Is it possible to cough yourself into a hernia? Because my left abdomen feels like I have.

Computer question: The weak part of my system now is the SSA drive. It's only 250GB and it's almost full. Is it possible to clone it to another SSA drive? You can get a 1Tb drive for 50 bucks, I'd like to copy my existing drive onto a new one and then replace it, the idea being that the computer would boot up and run exactly the same. Can this be done?

4 This is like that French village that everybody was flipped out on psychedelic moldy rye, as painted by Brugel!

Some blight destroyed all twelve pear trees; the partridges, calling birds, and turtle doves have some kind of flu; the hens and geese quit laying; the swans are attacking everything; and the milkmaids are constantly trying to milk the cows, which are dried up. Thirty-six ladies and thirty lords keep staggering around, to the cacophony of twenty-two tuneless pipers and eleven mad drummers banging wildly.

Yes, only eleven. My "true love" ran off with the other drummer. And he took all the rings.

It's always the drummer!

Yes. Had a laptop with a failing hard drive, cloned to a 1TB Samsung SSD, swapped it out, works fine. Recommend Macrium (www.macrium.com) as the cloning tool, If you ar eonly going to do it once, the trial version works fine, if you are going to do it more than one, spend the frogskins.

Definitely get a Clonezilla live image that can make a usb thumb drive bootable. This would allow you to clone your existing drive to another drive. You might have to go through some painful Windows incense burning and incantations to allow you to boot into a thumb drive, but it can be done. Be aware, however, that it will clone the entire drive, which will leave a lot of empty space. To use the full drive, you will either have to make a new partition (for data), or move the existing ones. I'd do this using tools in Parted Magic, but there maybe Win tools that can do it. Win installations have a s**t load of partitions and it's possible to make your recovery partition unusable, so check out how to configure this on the web.

Easeus

I used to like Norton Ghost and they ruined it, then Acronis and they ruined it. Easeus is the best thing going that I can find right now. Very intuitive and will move from different sizes (larger to smaller so long as you've got space gives lots of programs fits).

That said, sometimes SSDs come with cloning software. Check and see if that's the case before you spend money. But if you need to spend money, spend it on Easeus.

The best way to use Easeus is to create a bootable emergency drive and boot from it, then use *that* OS/GUI to clone your disk. It seems to be hit or miss with cloning SSDs when you run it in Windows. They go through the motions but won't boot.

58 I guess I'm old-school. When upgrading to a new hard drive or computer I do it in the painstaking fashion that requires me to copy all of my important data to an intermediate medium. Yes. I recently replaced a 250Gb HDD with a 1Tb Samsung SSD on a Windows machine. Samsung supplies a Windows program which will clone an existing Windows drive to a new Samsung SSD. The old-style 4-pin jobs were manually wired by wrapping stripped wires around screws, and tightening the screws. If done right, very secure. Those plastic RJ-style plugs as used on phones and Cat-5 cables are cheap-ass crap.

156 Last time we had a landline was just three years ago. When we moved here there was no broadband in the house and it took the wonderful folks at Suddenlink about five months to run a cable to the pole in front of our house, so in the meantime, I got AT&T landline dial up Internet. It had a phone attached to, but nobody ever called us.

Bell Labs put a huge effort into audio quality. Personally, I find communication from cellphone to cellphone to often be garbled. Tiny microphones, position sensitivity, tiny speakers, digitization, coding/decoding etc. Basically, it sucks.

Just think, a simple carbon-button microphone, and an ordinary speaker provide superior audio/low noise.

Your house is supposed to come with a land line. Most of us probably paid a hidden fee to have it disconnected. Unless you're real weird, nobody tore out walls to remove the phone wires. Or maybe you move a lot.

One of my phones is 4-wire, with a dial. We keep it for redundancy. Despite all the modernity around it, it will still place a call through the existing phone system with all power down. Can't figure out what is comical about that.

I'd be interested in hearing if that works. Based on the actions of ivermectin, I've assumed it would only work on coronaviruses. Other viruses have different shapes.

Ivermectin is a 3CL protease inhibitor and it also attaches to the spike protein as well as the ACE-2 receptors, essentially "gumming them up" so the spike can't dock in the receptors. So I would think viruses with different features might not be affected in the same way. But whaddo I know?

IF ivermectin works on other respiratory viruses in a similar way, then theoretically people could take periodic doses (one every week or two) and avoid viral infections all winter long. Wouldn't that be nice? I'd have to research the exact dosing schedule, but you don't have to take it daily to keep from getting Covid.

Well, you know that since I had the Coof in 2020, I have never really had a cold since. One time, I was developing a fever, and Ivermectin had no effect, but one pill of Hydroxychloroquine knocked that down, and I was fine a day later. Go figure.

I got sick mid November with what felt like a bad flu and couldn't shake it off completely till February. Covid went big in the USA in March. Tested twice and negative for covid. No antibodies detected either. Either I've been extremely lucky or antihistamines are doing something. I have never had covid so far. I am not complaining but it's strange.

Also, my local doc said that they found ivermectin worked well for most variants, but was not very helpful for the Delta variant for some reason.

Ivermectin has a brand name, Stromectol in the US, and is approved for treating parasites. I suspect most doctors will insist on running tests for worms before writing a prescription. I'd be willing to bet filling a prescription for it pops up a red flag in the database, and a doctor can look forward to getting their case files reviewed.

287 If you have a prescription, you can get ivermectin pills through Amazon pharmacy. And they are cheap, like they should be.

For the cough, get a nebulizer and some saline solution. I also add one drop of Lugol's ( iodine) and one drop of food grade hydrogen peroxide. The nebulizer gets the stuff down in your lungs, where it breaks up congestion. Kept me out of the doctor's office when I had the stuff that made me lose my voice. Also, best postion to prevent coughing is lying on your stomach.

The 2TB Samsung SSD I bought to use had the cloning software available, so I used that. I cloned the Win 7 hdd to SSD, then removed the hdd cables and told the system BIOS to boot into the SSD. Then I updated the SSD. Very easy to do.

Since it was Win 7, I had to update some of the system applications to download the Win 10 update from Microsoft. You won’t need that to go from one SSD to another w/o updating the OS.
