  • ASML has cancelled DUV shipments to China following pressure from the US. (WCCFTech)

Although the DUV scanners being sold are limited to the 14nm node, by use of multi-patterning they can produce (slowly and at significant cost) chips more-or-less equivalent to 7nm. Which is itself two generations behind the leading edge of mass production in the US, Taiwan, and South Korea.

But the US government still isn't happy and wants to put a stop to that, which will of course force China to develop its own semiconductor tools industry, at which point the US will have no leverage at all.

8 Here in the New Republic article is where the self-serving, self-identified "artist" lost me as a reader:

"The flaws [in A.I.] are amusing and a relief to many artists who—when ChatGPT was released—feared their profession might be over. If a computer program could produce a novel or painting at the press of a button, why were we spending countless hours torturing ourselves in cafés and studios for little recognition and even less pay?"

Eh, the only other option they have painted themselves into is to give the Chinese what they want outright. On the plus side, commies usually suck at innovation (indeed, it is a feature of the system. Iteration, sure, but true innovation is pretty stagnant when the state is master.) China has essentially stolen a shitload of everything as far as intellectual property and that has gotten them this far.

15 At Daily Mail:

"As for Clinton, flight records appear to indicate he too never visited Epstein's compound at Little St. James, despite his relationship with the pervert while in the White House.

However, according to ABC, Giuffre in 2016 attempted to subpoena him to testify as part of her lawsuit, claiming she met the then ex-president at Epstein Island.

The request was ultimately denied - despite her lawyers describing the proposed testimony of Clinton as 'highly relevant' and "important to the fundamental claims and defenses' in the case.

That said, Giuffre made no allegations of wrongdoing against the two-term Democrat in her complaint, and a Sunday report from ABC outright stated the documents are not expected to implicate Clinton criminally in any way.

In her ruling, Judge Preska gave 14 days for any Does who objected to their documents being made public to object, after which they would be unsealed."

20 In my opinion by far the biggest financial threat AI visuals pose is porn, which is estimated in the USA alone to be well over a billion dollars yearly, and I think that's WILDLY under-rated/under-reported. The real numbers have to be far higher, depending on one's definition of 'porn'.
It won't replace private idiots filming themselves, but it most certainly poses a major cost-saving for production. As for concerns people want to know a certain 'character' physically exists, I don't think that matters much: see, 'Cosplay'.
AI imaging is already making big-time inroads into static art (single images) and it's a matter of time until it gets good enough to be indistinguishable from porn recorded from real physical acts. The first time I encountered the idea of this, was way back in 1983, in Howard Chaykin's 'American Flagg' comics from First, where an actor finds himself replaced by a digital simulcrum after losing possession of rights to his own image!

25 To my knowledge, the first real-life test case of simulcra was the lawsuit by Crispin Glover when the production of Back To The Future II (prosthetically) placed his face on Jeffrey Weissman's body without compensation or permission.
But that was in 1989; Chaykin explored the idea in 1983, and with the concept of digital reproduction.
'Shatter', the first comic done on computer (MacPaint) got done in 1985. It's taken quite a while to get to this point.

Africa. We had a Data General MV/8000 minicomputer with Data General terminals, really nice but expensive. Keyboard was built into the terminal case. One of them stopped functioning so we had to call their tech (maintenance contract). He couldn't figure it out until he opened it up - the keyboard was full of water. Very high level investigations (LOL) revealed that the cleaning lady, when watering the ferns decorating the room, would pour water from a watering can into the lefthand pot, and kept pouring while traversing to the rightmost pot. Right over the keyboard.

60 I hate blancmange. Hate hate hate. I blame my first boarding school. Here I am, about 10 and away from home for the first time, now exposed to this foreign goop passed off as food. The other kids couldn't understand why I didn't like macaroni pudding and it was hard to explain that in Rome we didn't eat pasta as a sweet dessert but rather as a main course, with Bolognese sauce and lots of wonderful grated cheese. Also fried bananas. The Good Lord gave us a perfectly crafted fresh fruit so why not eat it that way? No, we are going to fry it in nasty oil and then abuse it further by sprinkling a lot of sugar over it. Yech!

67 Hey! We figured out what the mystery "bloop" noise recorded by hydrophones in 1992 was caused by! It was an iceberg calving from antarctica! Whelp, we can't write about Antarctica without the obligatory:

While there are still some underwater recordings that remain a mystery, many odd sounds, including the Julia, the Slow Down, and the Train, have recently been explained by the movement of ice in the southern seas.

As ice loss in Antarctica accelerates beyond what scientists ever expected, over half the shelves holding up the Southern Hemisphere's ice sheet are nearing collapse.

Huge chunks the size of London are already breaking off, and scientists say icequakes are becoming more common with climate change.

-and if you follow the link to the "ice sheet is nearing collapse" you will find an article that only hypothesizes that meltwater will enlarge fissures and lead to collapse. Not that it is happening at all.

Funny you should mention how important evaluations are. I gave my students an assignment on how to write a proper self-evaluation. Most of them did an outstanding job on the assignment. This end-of-course evaluation is a relatively small factor in my overall performance, but it does matter because of what I do in my day job.

128 "If a computer program could produce a novel or painting at the press of a button, why were we spending countless hours torturing ourselves in cafés and studios for little recognition and even less pay?"

I can see his point. After all, as Dr Johnson said, "No one but a blockhead ever writes, except for money." Except that Johnson himself wrote extensively for his friends, for no pay at all. And the terabytes of fan-fic - some of which is surprisingly good - shows that there is pleasure to be had in creation for its own sake. More to the point, AI is not creative, in the sense of being able to generate something new. It can only assimilate and regurgitate what has been created already; which, granted, is fine for Hollywood (to judge from its current output), but can hardly satisfy a human being.
