Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Weekend Hobby Thread![]() Good afternoon Horde. It is time for the Weekend Hobby Thread. Hope you all have settled into winter, survived the holidays and are now finding time for your hobbies. Please remember to leave the politics and current events at the curb. I've been debating whether or not I should post this link. However, I think is necessary to demonstrate why being on social media is a mistake. I love to paint. I never intended to be an "Artist". But, I've decided to try and make a buck or two. I still consider painting to be a hobby. I would never give up my hobby as the following baker does. Please do not discuss politics or current events. Bake Off star suffered ‘bad body image day’ after revealing she’d quit baking Back in 2020 Laura, 33, appeared on the show and made it all the way to the final, but eventually lost out to the series’ youngest-ever winner Peter Sawkins. At the time the digital manager from Kent was targeted online, with some cruelly body-shaming her and even going so far as to accuse her of ‘promoting obesity’. This week Laura, who is a size 26 and avid body positivity advocate, shared the trolls eventually led her to give up baking The following was submitted by Kindlot: here is a link to an episode of a youtube channel called Clickspring, who is most recently building the antithikera device, while making side videos about the techniques he thinks were used in making the original. He mostly builds with modern equipment, but he is researching the Greek techniques as well. This one is not about the machining or calculating (or casting bronze or casehardening home-made files) but about building a type of vice called a Stitching Pony - Kindlot Hobbyist Clay shared some good music with us today. Good music a hobby? Yes, just check it out. Thanks Clay. Happy New Year, everyone! I was browsing the internet early this year and stumbled across a 2009 video of Bennie Brydern playing swing tunes at some music convention on the earliest commercially made electric violin… a 1935 Rickenbacker Bakelite Electro Violin. I thought it looked wicked cool. So I was inspired to try to design and make a homemade electric violin similar to it. It is headless… no peg box at the end of the neck. Instead, I used guitar tuners near the tail. I used a magnetic humbucker pickup made for 3 and 4 string guitars (mounted under the fingerboard) instead of the traditional piezo pickup used on all commercially made electric violins today and I am loving the sound of steel violin strings through a humbucker. I designed and printed 3d plastic parts for electronic bay covers, pickup mounts, and wire guide. The hand rest at the end of the body was made from some aluminum strap. As usual, chinrest, neck, and fingerboard came from an online musical instrument parts house. Add poplar wood, glue, and lacquer from Home Depot, bake for 2 months in a Texas summer and you have a fun violin. I am including a link at the end to a recording so you can year its voice for yourself. No video this time… just audio. It is a simple violin duet arrangement that I put together for The Wexford Carol. It is the oldest known Irish Christmas carol. Possibly the oldest Christmas carol in the world still performed today. ![]() ![]() Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Electric violin is very cool-nice work!
My humble bodging continues on the Corvair. Been priming, painting the underside and wheel wells, suspension parts all week. Today I used a quart of brush on flat black rustoleum and 5 large (15 oz.) cans of same. Also painted 2 coats of high heat (bbq) paint on muffler, tailpipe. There's a 12"X 7' metal cover that's been missing from the car for who knows how long. It covers cables, shift rod, etc. right in the middle of the car underneath that I will cut and fit out of stock I have. Need to lift car a bit higher to get it done. Had my usual goatee of paint residue. Felt good to scrub it off in shower. Replacing brake master cylinder, voltage regulator, and 4 bushings on front steering on tap this week. Bakelite isn’t plastic, it was an early attempt at a material that performed a little bit like plastic.
It worked OK, but the colors were limited to black and brown and similar. Catalin was a different approach, and offered bright primary colors. Swirled patterns were also possible. It is prone to shrinkage and cracking. Some Bakelite radios are collectible, but Catalin radios are a different category. I don’t know the market now, but certain AM Catalin sets, very basic, were getting into 5 figures sometimes. I wouldn’t buy one at that price but I’d sure sell them. Posted by: Ben Had at January 13, 2024 05:51 PM (POc8X) You can also buy or rig a kiln to run in your microwave, too. IIRC it needs to be a heat proof ceramic lined with something that will absorb the microwaves and re radiate the heat inwards. People use them for melting glass to make jewelry and glass plaques. I think using them to cure or glaze tile would also work. The plan I saw called for a terracotta flower pot lined with graphite paint, but there are other solutions as well. One of my hobbies is feeding stray cats at my mom’s old place. In preparation for the low temperatures I decided to get some temporary shelters for the cats. I intended on simply buying some styrofoam ice chests, making a small opening and filling them with straw. I didn’t expect that styrofoam ice chests are no where to found. I thought it was going to be the straw difficult to get ( it was not). I ended up buying some plastic totes and sheets of styrofoam insulation and making my own ‘ice chests’ . Hope the cats are as happy with how they came out as I am.

Posted by: Titanium White at January 13, 2024 *** I guess it's possible. The Super Ball was on the market in '65, as I recall, and the first Super Bowl was, what, 1967? (I'm no football fan.) Still, it's not likely. There were "bowl" games before that, the Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl for instance, so the step to "Super" is not that great. Those bakelite radios were almost required on every kitchen table or counter when I was a kid. Replace one of the five tubes as needed (the trip to the store with the tube tester and replacements was fun) and don't crack it and it would last forever. Set for WADK 1540 AM, our local station, which gave the weather, high tide times, school lunch menu for the day, local events, and easy listening music. The sound of my childhood. Speaking of AM radio: something I haven't done for a long time is AM DXing. I still have an old GE Superadio that I used for that. This is where analog tuning is helpful. AM isn't as popular these days so it would be interesting to see what's still out there. And this is just the time of year to try. No thunderstorms messing up reception.
It was amazing what even a simple AM radio could pull in. I recall getting stations from over 1,000 miles distance. There can be a drawback. One morning a station was reporting about a huge snow storm approaching. It came in so clear I assumed it was local. I started to freak about the morning commute until I discovered it was a station from several hundred miles away three states away. Posted by: JTB at January 13, 2024 07:19 PM (zudum) 142

Similar. When I had to get to work at 0 dark thirty (retirement is a joy) I listened to the traffic reports from Chicago which I always enjoyed. First, because I hate Chicago and its traffic. Second, because it was about 900 miles away so I could enjoy hearing about major problems on the Dan Ryan or, even better, Interstate 294. Thoughts of that damn road can still cause nightmares. Well Cathedrals were built with hand tools. I've joined some wood working/ whittling groups on Facebook (yes, the devil) and I'm stunned at the talent. I've considered doing bowls with carving tools. A hatchet and some chisels. Posted by: Cannibal Bob at January 13, 2024 08:06 PM (ConHt) 184
but the real benefit is to be able to produce a modern level of accurate piece using what tech is available in the field ... "flint knives and bear skins" to re-use a phrase ...

Papa Eez made a lot of bowls and plaques with a wood lathe made out of an old washing machine motor and an improv tool rest

Art Rondeley… Once I decided to try to play the violin again, I started scouring the internet for educational websites. I too was amazed at how much of a female thing that violin playing seemed to have become. Was it always like that and I was too oblivious as a kid to notice? I don’t know. But it still surprises me how MUCH of a chick thing it seems to be. No matter. Making and playing them brings me joy.

JTB - thank you for the compliment! I had never heard of the Wexford Carol until 2 or 3 weeks ago. I stumbled across it and it seemed that every version I listened to was beautiful in its own way. I just had to try it.
