So, due to the fact I'm finally recovering, I manage to have a range report.
I headed out to our local range to do some shooting at our 500 meter silhouette range. And, thanks to Gun Sensei Weaselsan, I had a plan, a pen and a notebook. The idea was to note the how much the scope needed to come up at various ranges, 200 meters, 300 meters, all the way out to 500 meters. I worked with two guns yesterday, My Noreen Carbine X and my Savage. It was interesting to see how much variation there was between the 16" barrel on the Noreen and the 22" barrel on the Savage. Anyway, my eventual goal: the Noreen becomes my designated 500 Meter Silhouette rifle while the Savage becomes my designated 1,000 yard rifle. We shall see. Damn blake, hope you are feeling better.
Thankfully no work tomorrow so I can hang for a bit. But I did just start watching The Fellowship of the Ring (extended version). Will start the 2nd half after I am done here and may go on to watch The Two Towers. Any who, still no range time for me and the girls are still in the Pelican case where they have been locked up since October when the last shot rang out at the Texas MoMe. I have renewed my membership at my range and also donated some money too. Thinking of hitting the indoor range by me and renting potential CC candidates. Somehow I get the feeling it might be the Sig P365 XMacro. But willing to try others. Posted by: Scuba Dude at December 31, 2023 07:12 PM (f0/sc) 20

I am also contemplating giving the lad our PC carbine and starting to trick out another one.
His began life as a sadly California compliant model that we fixed up by putting it on a new chassis and adding ambi controls and spare charging handle. It will never been a 500 yard gun, but it is loads of fun as a 300 foot gun. Posted by: sven at December 31, 2023 07:14 PM (X0I7i) 24

Went to the Chantilly show this weekend. I took home a new 2 1/2 inch barreled Colt Python. This variant comes with thin service grips vice the larger target grips that equip its longer barreled siblings. The only choice of finish is still high polish stainless steel. Apparently, Colt has not made a big deal out of re-introducing this Python variant. The Colt website has no mention of the return of the 2 1/2 inch Python. MSRP is still $1499, but I picked mine up for $1399.

Took my Vz 52 and Vz 52/57 out this week to contrast and compare. The Vz 52 was insanely accurate out to 600 yards. Almost too easy. The Czech 7.62 x 45 is a nice round although obsolete now. The Vz 52/57 also shot well but suffered after the 300 yard distance, had to play with the elevation and hold to make hits on the steel at that distance being 7.62 x 39. Rapid fire for both at 150 yards worked quite well with the nod going to the Vz 52 for repeated center hits on the steel torso targets.
The Czechs make good stuff. Posted by: Hairyback Guy at December 31, 2023 07:28 PM (R/m4+) 40
Brief range report:
Took my niece who was in town all week. This time we used the 5.7 Rock, the SW K-38 my father used in competition, and the G2C that Mrs CM66 and I each carry. This was only her second time shooting, so I was impressed that she went with the larger calibers. She wasn't quite as afraid of the blast and recoil this time. We started with the 5.7 and by the time she had been through both magazines (46 rounds) she was all in the critical zone with the last 10. The K38 threw her until she went to single action. I think she was still flinching from the blast though.....the uncontained revolver action. By the time we got to the G2C she was doing OK, at least keeping everything in the 7 ring or closer which is all torso hits. So a good trip, and she enjoyed herself which is the most important thing. Now back to content. Thanks to all who chip in every week. I have learned a lot, and my father who was a collector and an armorer was no slouch. Lots of good folks here. Navy SEAL's advice wasn't bad, even though that's not how I was taught to shoot while in the Parachute Ski Marines stationed in Macho Grande; however, I take exception to forcing the thumb of the support hand to point along the slide. I say doing so increases the chance of the thumb bumping into the slide lock lever at an inopportune time.

Whig can help you more on this, but here's my quick and dirty summary. If you want to just sell them off ASAP and don't care about how much $$ you get, go to your local gun shop and ask them to put them up for sale or on consignment (or on Gun Broker). This will usually get you more $$ for your guns (assuming that they're desirable on the market), but can take some time before you see the $$ go into your pocket. If you have time, you might want to contact one of the big auction outfits that specialize in firearms (Rock Island, Morphy's, Collectors' Firearms) and have them go through the process to put them into the pipeline for their next auction. @46 PI:
We had the same issue 10 years ago when my father passed. The local gun shops offered about 10% of the value on the entire collection, which was substantial. I ended up opening an account on GB and selling individual items. If you set up the auction so the buyer pays the transfer fees and shipping, you can probably find a local FFL to deal with and get $25 per transfer, or thereabouts. But selling individually will be much better than trying to do the bulk at one time. Posted by: Chappyman66 at December 31, 2023 07:42 PM (L3byd) 59

Best way to sell a small collection is to find a medium size shop and work out a consignment deal, based on the shop getting a percentage, with the shop handling all the paperwork. This gives the shop an incentive to keep the selling price high and lets the seller avoid interacting with any questionable characters.
Avoid selling outright to pawn shops, which are legendary for paying low and then selling high. Posted by: Idaho Spudboy at December 31, 2023 07:43 PM (yWvc2) 62
What is the best way to sell the guns?
Thanks! Posted by: Pillage Idiot at December 31, 2023 07:33 PM (HlyYF) Check around places like Gunbroker, GunSpot and Simpson Ltd. for what a particular gun is going for either at auction or buy now. Give you some idea of the worth as well as demand. Good luck and don't be in rush to sell and avoid pawn shops and gun shops as they will low ball you as they have to mark up when they go to sell unless they make you a fair offer. Posted by: Hairyback Guy at December 31, 2023 07:43 PM (R/m4+) 63

A: No, no, a thousand times NO! There are endless stupid questions, and whether or not revolvers are still relevant is very clearly one of them one of them.
Folks, Weasel is introducing a linguistic concept known as "contrastive focus reduplication" to us. Usually, you will see it used with a single word, such as Whoopi's "rape-rape" example, but here, Weasel is using it with a phrase, to emphasize that this is most definitely-definitely a stupid question. Another question Weasel considers stupid is "Do I have enough ammo?". Posted by: Duncanthrax at December 31, 2023 07:44 PM (a3Q+t) 65

Pillage Idiot, the last sentence of the first paragraph should have gone into the second paragraph. Going to one of the auction outfits will usually get you more $$, but you have to have something that people want and time available before you get the $$ from the sale.

The dealer basically explained he can broker them and targets a price midway between gunbroker dot com and bluebook. He puts them on consignment and lists them (presumably gunbroker) and gets his cut. The guy had about ten guns and the dealer took on all but a couple of mystery 32s or whatever they were... he also turned away a couple of boxes of vintage ammo that others might have an interest in but he apparently thought they were trivial. The final gun thread of 2023. Good thing we all know better than to go outside and discharge our guns into the night air.
Posted by: Ben Had People used to do that in Sugar Land. I recall hearing shots one New Year's and then a thud. A few months later, while repairing some duct work in the attic, I found a 9mm round that had made it through my shingles and mostly through the roof deck. Wow, thanks for all of the good advice everyone!
My buddy is fairly well off financially, so I don't think he needs to do a quick sale to raise cash. There is a local gun shop that I really like and I have purchased a new gun from him cheaper than big box price so I know he is a straight shooter. I have noticed that he has guns on consignment for sale. I will definitely give him a call next year for his input. Posted by: Pillage Idiot at December 31, 2023 07:50 PM (HlyYF) 78
My ex-EDC Zippo is a B VI. I don't carry it anymore as it leaks and.. reasons.
I have a couple of others laying around. Dead due to broken lids. I collect Ronson Jone handwarmers. Like a Zippo you leave smoldering in your pocket. They also add a heavy oil to Zippo fluid these days and I can't stand the taste. They did it so the squirt isn't walkable by flame. It also ruins pipe loads and cigars. All I taste is the fuel. My two cents on photos: Natural sunlight is the best light source you can use. Angle the shot if you can to eliminate the glare from the sun. If you have a bunch of pistols, consider getting a light box, especially if taking pictures of the firearms in an outdoor setting is not doable. My pictures of pistols all use a light box I ordered off of Amazon for about $60. It folds up into its own bag, so it doesn't clutter up the house too much. I can at least take down the guns and examine the barrels, and anything else you guys advise. I assume high-quality photos would be important on Gun Broker.
(I have never shopped there, because I don't feel I am knowledgeable enough to NOT buy someone else's junk.) Posted by: Pillage Idiot at December 31, 2023 07:44 PM (HlyYF) ---------------- I'd compare what you have to photos and descriptions on Gun Broker. I believe a bit of common sense will take you a long way. However, as has been mentioned, if you're uncomfortable going that route, consignment may be a good way to go. And yeah, checking bores is a good idea, whether you consign or use Gun Broker. Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing(tT6L1) at December 31, 2023 07:52 PM (tT6L1) 82

Pillage Idiot - something I'd recommend to start is picking up a copy of a gun value guide (ex. Shooter's Bible published annually) to get a working idea of what the guns are worth. Condition can be subjective (like grading coins) but it's not a bad idea to have a ballpark value before things start selling.

The Adiga Armory guy makes a mistake during the point shooting bit, when he tells you to keep your focus on the front sight for faster recovery. If you're shifting your focus back to the sight every time, then refocusing on the target, that would seem terribly inefficient.

It would be. I think the idea is to keep your focus on the front sight all the way through the follow up. The USPSA Grand Master that I took a couple of classes from said that you should be able to follow the front sight and see it rise up out the notch and come back down into it. I admit that I can't do that consistently. Posted by: Oddbob at December 31, 2023 08:16 PM (sNc8Y) 124

So first a quick range report and then the beef I have with all (but one) of the gun youtube channels I follow:
So I did make it to the range yesterday. I had cinched down the front sight of my PSA Dagger and I wanted to confirm the bad news I'd seen before. I did 40 'draw + fire' reps and the damn front sight shook itself loose AGAIN. I had an RMA and shipping label from PSA so...not the end of the world. I shipped it back and I hope/expect it will get fixed. Pisses me off. Though, in some fairness, I do have over 2k rounds through this gun. After that failure, I used my CZ 75 for some draw drills and noticed that the rear sight has drifted. Need to fix that but I only carried the 75 until I got home and could swap my carry for a P-07. I'm back to carrying that cuz I shoot that gun really well. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards, Buy ammo at December 31, 2023 08:36 PM (xcxpd) 147

But despite the death of probably the 2nd most important gun inventor of the 20th century, only one fucking gun channel did a video commemorating his death. One. Out of like 50 fucking channels. This is a personal beef, because I like and respect Glocks (even if I'm not carrying one at the moment). But that aside, it's like a car channel not covering the death of Henry Ford. I saw 4" barreled Pythons w/ sale prices of $1299 at the Chantilly show this weekend. I hear that you can get discounts of about $400-500 off MSRP on "blemished" Pythons that flunked the polishing QC inspection. If you can live w/ a less than perfect satin stainless steel polishing job, this might be a way for you to save some $$ on that Python. What I find to be interesting is that I've only bought one Zippo in my adult live, but I now own nine Zippos dating back from the 40's. And I'm not a collector.

I had seen the Mas Ayoub video before. Of course I already agreed with the premise. I carry a Smith 9mm but use revolvers around the house for their simple, reliable function.
Aside from their ease of use, what do DA revolvers offer these days besides more versatile reloading criteria, comfort, power, almost total reliability, and just being damn cool? And no one makes a 41 magnum semi-auto. That caliber alone is reason for revolvers to exist. Posted by: JTB at December 31, 2023 08:49 PM (7EjX1) 163

Now for the beef...so I'm sure some of you know that Gaston Glock died last week. Dude was 94, had a hell of a ride in life, no regerts as the young folks say.
I mentioned this earlier on the blog, but when I was in the French Quarter on Saturday afternoon, I happened into a cigar shop (Crescent City Cigar Shop) around the corner from where I lived as a kid. They did not have much in the way of pipes, a few aromatic house blend tobaccos. I sniffed them and they were intriguing, and the owner pinched up a sample of one, stuffed it into a bag, and said, "My compliments."
I tried it this morning. For those of you who puff a pipe, when I say it was like Captain Black Original (the white pouch), you'll know what I mean: mild, easy burning, with a room note something like root beer, but not too heavy. As for cigars, the owner and two friends were puffing away. The smoke and fug in that room were *rough*. But I need to go back and buy something! If a typical YouTube channel is a small or solo operation, I'm willing to cut some slack due to 1) the holiday season and 2) the time required to produce a video and air it. I'd also argue that Glocks made quality semi-auto pistols affordable to the masses. Before Glock's arrival on the scene, your semi-auto pistol available to the masses was something like a Jimenez or Raven "Saturday Night Special" that that was as reliable as a Ford Pinto or Chevy Chevette. At the range again this week for a 22lr session. the previous outing went well once I slowed down and applied the trigger control and focus we discuss here all the time. For this week I used an older Taurus Tracker with 6.5" barrel shooting double action. The trigger is smooth but rather long. Nothing trains trigger pull like a DA revolver. (I get spoiled by the singe action triggers on my Rugers.) The results were gratifying but I was tired after just an hour session. That kind of concentration can wear a guy out. Still, it was worth the effort and proves the efficacy of good practice.

Hi Wolfus, Give in to that sneaking thought. The closest I come to a Colt SA Army is a stainless Ruger New Vaquero. I use it mostly with BP cartridges. But single action revolvers are my favorite handguns. If you aren't sold on a 45 Colt, there are plenty of Colt clones in 357. BTW, I prefer longer barrel revolvers as a rule. They balance better for me and handle recoil better. Posted by: JTB at December 31, 2023 09:13 PM (7EjX1) 188

Well if there's on thing I've learned, it's to always listen to the voices in my head at least when they say that I should buy a gun. Uberti makes a nice SAA clone. The Ruger Vaquero is basically the more modern Blackhawk mechanical design disguised to look like a SAA externally. Posted by: Oddbob at December 31, 2023 09:13 PM (sNc8Y) 189

As far as a semi-auto, I keep thinking of the Makarov in either the 9x18mm Makarov round, or the .380. I'm not picky. I love the look of the pistol, and from what I've read they are quite reliable. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at December 31, 2023 09:22 PM (omVj0) 209

.38 Special is the cheapest, followed by .357 Magnum. These are the most common revolver calibers. Therefore, they are (usually) easier to find. .45 Colt you'll need to stock up on. Think about the source of the ammo you might put through that Makarov (or copy thereof). If the supply of cheap surplus Russian ammo dries up, .380 ACP might be the better choice over the long term. .380 ACP will be around for the long haul. 9mm Makarov (at least cheap 9mm Makarov) might not. Happy New Year to Weasel and various and sundry morons as ye may be! My prayer is this. May It please GOD to change the hearts of our leaders or drive them out. If that is not His will, may He shorten the time until He wraps all this up. Amen and amen.

Oh, Zippos! Almost forgot. Back when I smoked I picked up a nice one with my Puking Buzzards 101 ABN crest on it. Ft. Benning,1971.
Gosh, I feel elderly. Posted by: RI Red at December 31, 2023 09:33 PM (4WoWo) One of the geezers I team up with for golf is an old 101st guy. Was with them in Vietnam in 68-69. He's got his 80th coming up. He also has an 18 handicap. Posted by: Diogenes at December 31, 2023 09:37 PM (W/lyH) 236

Posted by: nurse ratched at December 31, 2023 09:24 PM (eY0nO) I think it's like vegans. Not around here, but some places there are Glock fanbois who are just... annoying. Lots of narrow-minded people in the world, even among shooters, sadly. Posted by: GWB at December 31, 2023 09:37 PM (sSx7k) 237

I have my Dad’s Zippo he carried throughout WWII and for another 20 years afterwords. It had an Australian silver coin soldiered on one side but it’s almost completely worn away now. It’s in two pieces and the hinge is broken. Still might try and get it repaired.

They also add a heavy oil to Zippo fluid these days
In the golden age, both Ronson and Red Devil sold seasonal blends of lighter fluid, to behave in different weather (since naphtha is an extremely volatile distillate). My dad worked nights at a refinery's "sales" (shipping) department and had access to every product they made, including some you really should not have been handling. He'd make up his own blends, to get that lazy fat flame pipe smokers cherish. Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at December 31, 2023 09:56 PM (FCs/J) 262

I guess I was glad to see Wolf makes some ammo that isn't shot. I have shot every version of Wolf that I could find (7.62x39) through my AR and VZ58. None of it would consistently group below 3" at 100 yards, usually 4" or more. I had about given up on a BCA AR upper after shooting every steel case ammon could find through it, deciding it was a bad barrel since some people report getting 1 1/2" groups. A friend gave me a box of Belom. Not expecting much,I put a scope on the upper and sighted it in well enough to get it on paper at 100 yards. A 5 shot group of steel case came in at the expected 4" or so. I then shot two consecutive 5 shot groups with the Belom of .69 and .93 moa. No more steel case ammo for me!

Love my Zippos. I’m using the butane inserts for my cigars. A word of caution, avoid regular butane and fill with premium butane such as Vector, etc. to avoid clogging. Amazon has a great selection of Zippos and inserts.
