The Saturday Night Joke

A former Sergeant in the Marine Corps took a new job as a high school teacher.

Just before the school year started, he injured his back. He was required to wear a plaster cast around the upper part of his body.
Fortunately, the cast fit under his shirt and wasn't noticeable. On the first day of class, he found himself assigned to the toughest students in the school. The smart-aleck punks, having already heard the new teacher was a former Marine, were leery of him and he knew they would be testing his discipline in the classroom.

Walking confidently into the rowdy classroom, the new teacher opened the window wide and sat down at his desk. When a strong breeze made his tie flap, he picked up a stapler and stapled the tie to his chest.

Dead silence...........

The rest of the year went very smoothly. H/T Hrothgar

In case you missed it The Fabulous and I have retired.

Just wanted to let you know….I received my 2023 Social Security Stimulus Package.

It contained two tomato seeds, pancake mix, two discount coupons to KFC, a “Biden

Build Back Better” bumper sticker, a prayer rug, a Biden Speech Decoder Ring, a machine

to blow smoke up my ass, a case of Bud Light, and a “Blame it on Trump” poster for the front yard.

The directions were in Spanish.

Yours should arrive soon.

WATCH: Bear Snatches $45 Meal From Florida Home Moments After Delivery

A doorbell camera caught the surprising moment a bear steals a Florida family's $45 Uber Eats order moments after the delivery driver dropped it off. Laidy Guiterrez and Daniel Bula told FOX 35 they were waiting for their Taco Bell dinner when the hulking creature decided to claim the meal for itself on November 3.

Footage shared with the news station shows a black bear walking up to the Orlando-area home minutes after the Uber Eats driver left the meal on the front porch. The hungry thief picks up the bag with its mouth before making its leisurely escape.

"He came, and he grabbed the food – then he came again for the soda," Nina Castro, Laidy and Daniel's niece, described to reporters.

117 Fascinating Finds Revealed in 2023
The year’s most exciting discoveries included a stolen Vincent van Gogh painting, a hidden medieval crypt and a gold-covered mummy

Fascinating finds unveiled in 2023Fascinating finds unveiled in 2023 ranged from a 12-sided object that may have been used for sorcery to a lost Rembrandt portrait.

In a year marked by momentous change and loss, from the outbreak of violence in Israel and Gaza to record-breaking extreme weather, archaeological and cultural news offered a mostly welcome distraction. Spanning disciplines, historical eras, geographic locations and cultures, some of the 117 artifacts highlighted below were first unearthed years ago but only documented now, while others were identified more recently. From a floating speakeasy that sank under suspicious circumstances to a 4,000-year-old site dubbed “Dutch Stonehenge,” these were the most fascinating finds of 2023, as covered by Smithsonian magazine.

Missing masterpieces
For as long as humans have been making art, natural disasters, the ravages of time, theft and iconoclasm have threatened their creations’ survival. But while countless masterpieces have vanished over the millennia, many others remain hidden, tucked away in attics, basements and even thrift stores.

Everything and I mean everything you wanted to know about Quick Sand. (Well maybe not everything)

In Hollywood, few moments have you on the edge of your seat more than when a character gets trapped in quicksand. The stunt is sometimes used during a peak dramatic moment, like in Lawrence of Arabia, but it can also be used for comedic relief, like on Gilligan's Island.

Love thy neighbor? Sure, just not the wife's co-workers. Genius Award Winner.

DECEMBER 29--Latoya Gladney, a 44-year-old manager in training at a McDonald’s in North Carolina, told police that her employees were “disrespecting” her last night, so she called her husband “to assist her.”

Investigators allege that when Dwayne Waden, a 57-year-old church pastor, subsequently arrived at the restaurant in High Point, he chose not to turn the other cheek.

Cops say Waden walked into the kitchen and began punching Theodore Garlington, a McDonald’s cook, in the face. Waden also allegedly wrapped his hands around Garlington’s neck and began “pushing his head toward the deep fryer,” according to a police report.

Before Garlington, 34, could be dipped in hot oil, several employees interceded, pulling Waden (seen at right) off the victim.

7 I had hoped, yesterday, when I took delivery of five gold rings, that we were finally past all the poultry. I hawked one of the rings just to buy bird food.

But, no. A sixth pear tree, with yet another danged partridge, turtle doves nine and ten, nine French hens, mostly still alive, and now eight annoying calling birds, have been joined by six stinking geese, who are at least a-laying, but also one goose ate four of the nine rings, so goose is on the menu. No more birds, my true love! Please!

61 Those who want to really learn about history-all of it-will study more than just “Black History.” One simply cannot learn with the intent of repeating mistakes, by studying a single facet. These people will remember the first time the United States almost fell to Civil War. In 1832 and 1833 there was an event in American history called, The Nullification Crisis. President Andrew Jackson was trying to balance the Federal budget. At the time, there was no income tax all income came from tariffs on goods. Led by states in the North, the tariffs were raised. This hurt southern agrarian-based economies. Not even 50 years old, people in the South wondered why they should be taxed to help get money to the North. They felt like their representation in Congress was zero. The issue got so hot that the Vice President resigned, and he went to South Carolina to lead the rebellion. There, the state was considering secession based on the idea that higher tariffs were unconstitutional/not for the general welfare, and just for the welfare of the Northern states. President Jackson prepared to personally lead troops into South Carolina and vowed to personally hang anyone who opposed him.

87 It's kind of insane how important it is to colleges to have winning football teams. Considering that the two reasons for college is idealistically the "education" and practically the signaling of what social class you belong to, whether or not the more-or-less professional football team affiliated with the college wins or not has nothing to do with those things.

Technically no. How're you doing? Better and better, hopefully.

What you posted about the DOJ nixing a second SBF indictment for political reasons may well be correct.

However, the reason given may not be a mere pretext. The prosecutor said it was to expedite forfeiture and restitution. There could be some validity to that.

There's always a question about dinging a def again, unless he got a joke of a sentence, which SBF didn't. The usual rationale for running somebody through again is to prevent any possibility of the first conviction & sentence being overturned on appeal, & the def going free. You rarely see TWO unrelated convictions being overturned on appeal.

Ya know, it's not like the prosecution has a time limit to present their case in court ('it's now late in the third quarter but does the prosecution have enough time to tie up loose ends in their case?'). A good teacher can explain the most complex of things in such a way that even the slowest get the drift. Lazy, corrupt prosecutors.

When this country fails, and we are falling now, the sudden total collapse will happen with alacrity. Thanks to a wide open 'let me help you in, here's some cash and a phone' border policy, it won't take long for total collapse.

197 As I mentioned last night, our Family Christmas Party was today. The expected 50 or 60 immediate family members attended. There were 20 or so outliers that couldn't make it. There was a double handful of young ones here, toddlers and babies, and that was nice.

Much was consumed, in the way of meats, pasta, breads, sweets, cakes and pies (my limoncello cheeses cake was a favorite).

The festivities were barely interrupted by the arrival of the Fire Department and the EMS midway, as they hauled off my oldest (I'm second oldest) brother-in-law to the hospital. He basically passed out (no booze involved) due to postprandial hypotension. That's my diagnosis anyway. It appears he is OK as of our last word.

Last of the house guests should depart tomorrow, including my son, unfortunately. We'll be eating leftovers for a week at least. Looking forward to a quiet new years.

259 I think Javier Milei wants to peg Argentina's money to the USD.

Posted by: Braenyard at December 30, 2023 11:44 PM (jg5Rp)

Because of the Argentine Peso being near hyperinflation, they already use the usd for everything, but there were laws stating that payments to the government had to be in Pesos, foreign contracts had to be done in Pesos and no contract was legal if payment was not made in pesos. This meant that if you wanted to save your value in cash you had to keep it in dollars, and trade back into pesos to make transactions. Since the official rate was below the market rate, the citizen either took a bath getting payments in pesos, or bought in and out of dollars on the black market - called "the dollar blue". The Dollar Blue spot was published on the front page of the leading papers in Argentina.
Milei blames the government central bank for inflating the Peso, and in the face of defacto dollarization, had decreed that there are not limits to the use of dollars, or any form of payment for contracts domestic or foreign, or tax payments. He hopes to control inflation, and take the ability to print wildly away from the Argentine central bank.

265 Global warming:

The Texas Coastal Indians although ignorant of time, they "know and understand the differences of the seasons, when the fruits come to ripen and the "season when the fish come to die". _Cabeza de Vaca (1527)

Winter of 1820-21, Galveston Bay froze over allowing Jane Long and her slave to break through the ice and pluck frozen fish and ducks out for food.

On February 11, 1899, the temperature hit 23 degrees below zero in Tulia, which meant it was probably even a few degrees colder than that in Dalhart.
Abilene dropped to -23; Denison reached -16; Fort Worth-Dallas saw -10 degrees, Waco -5, Austin -1 and San Antonio -4. (Children enjoyed skating on the frozen San Antonio River.)
Corpus Christi, 11 degrees, Brownsville,12 degrees and Galveston chilled to 8 degrees.

Much of Galveston Bay froze, (as did part of Corpus Christi Bay to the south).

The 1899 cold wave that gave Galveston its record low still stands as the nation's most severe Arctic blast since the federal government began keeping records. All-time low temperature records were set all over the U.S. Even the Mississippi River froze, later sending ice flows into the Gulf of Mexico

1856, Jan.3 - A violent norther arose during the night, and we
had it piercing cold today. When in the house we were
seated by fires, and when outside the doors, wrapped in our
overcoats. Yet in spite of all our efforts it seemed
almost impossible to keep warm, so penetrating are these

blow so violently they drive the water from the shallow

There is one in particular, across the mouth of Nueces Bay,

That Microsoft Copilot thing is creepy and scares me. I encountered it early yesterday after a round of updates on the various machines here. There is preview version for Windows 10, and that somehow got activated on my main desktop here. It did not get activated on any of the laptops. Nor did it even activate on the Windows 11 install I have here on this same machine.

That alone makes me mad, software deciding, on it's own, who it's going to be available for based on lord knows what kind of algorithm...

But anyway, there popped up Copilot on the taskbar. First then was to figure out how to turn it off.

I will tell you a happy story.

I was praying after communion on Christmas Eve. It was mostly the same prayer, that my son would find his way back to Church after dabbling in the demonic. I looked up to see him taking Communion. I didn't even know he was there.

Turns out he texted DH and was told we were at Mass, so he changed his plans, found a priest to hear his confession (for apparently over 15 minutes, so it was sincere) and took communion.

Prayer... answered.
