Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | The Weekend Hobby ThreadGood afternoon Hobbyists. What has been going on in your world? After 2+ weeks of some crud and a Christmas trip out of state, I really haven't done anything since seems like forever. Enjoy the thread and leave the current events out at the curb. Thank you. This video was submitted to us by OrangeEnt. He told me he came across it after Christmas and perhaps I should save for next year. I think now is the time to work on this. Thanks OrangeEnt. I really get the urge to build a cabin. But, if you are going to build one, shouldn't it be bigger than most walk-in closets or small bedrooms? Let's look at some Moron photos. Photography remains a popular hobby. ![]() MisHum, submitted for your approval- a pic my wife took near our new place at sunset. I don't know what it is about this place but the sunsets and sunrises are, many times, spectacular. - TonypeteThank you Tonypete & Mrs. Tonypete. ![]() The path of totality was just north of me but we got about 90% of it. It was cloudy but thin enough you could see it. Very cool. - Robert Thanks Robert. Your description is spot on. It is very cool. ![]() Hi Here is a pdf of some of my artwork. I usually do ceramics, but at the end of the file are examples of boxmaking, bookmaking, watercolor, handmade paper vessels, etc. If you can use any of these images for the hobby thread, great. Hopefully doing a screenshot of the pics you like. I am retired and take classes at my local university to keep busy in retirement. I read Ace of Spades everyday but rarely comment since I had problems years ago with not being able to login. I gave up but I think the system works for me now. I usually comment as "brio" on rare occasions, usually in the food thread. Thanks, BrioBeautiful work and thank you so much for sharing. PDFs are difficult to work with. I wish there was a way I could show you more of the 100 pages of photos. Now that the major holidays are almost passed. We can return to our hobbies and past times. So please forward your tips, photos, stories, Jenkins Green, 20/0 fan brushes and Cad Red to petmorons at gmail dot com. Until the next time, "Keep on Hobbying". And a Happy New Year to you. The reason for unibomber shacks is that you can legally build a certain size without needing building permits. Even in rural areas, they will hassle you over it and can make you tear it down.

You can't, legally. We had a neighbor in Spokane that built a small two story. He was told that, if they ever caught him using the top part, they'd have him tear it down. If you have multiple ones, they can't touch or be connected.

One of the vlogs I follow, Trout and Coffee, built a nice off grid cabin. He doesn't live there full time, but is still being harassed by the local authority about it. I've avoided watching those videos because my advice would be to sell it and be done with it. People always think you should fight legally over things like this. My experience is that, if they want you gone, the courts will back them up.

This week, my hobby is fixing my dishwasher. It was leaking water and, now that I've replaced all the gaskets, I have noticed that the hose attached to the diverter assembly is more hole than hose.
Of course, I can't just replace the hose. It says that a new diverter assembly will ship Tuesday. In other news, I have a brand new Elecraft KX3 built up from a kit and the panadapter as well. The amplifier is backordered, but should get here eventually. Posted by: Cybersmythe at December 30, 2023 05:59 PM (iZEhM) 29

Posted by: OrangeEnt at December 30, 2023 05:42 PM (Angsy) Sometimes I let things dry intentionally. But with acrylic it doesn't take long to dry even without trying. I researched and helped build 2 strawbale homes here in AZ (many years ago).
Without an architect you could build a 30'x30' house out of strawbale (r33 stacked 'flat' or r33 stacked 'on side'). If they touched you need an architect. The problem is tax related: you use either 2' on each wall or 1.5' and they measure your sqft on the outside so you pay tax on a lot of wall space. 30x30 900sqft becomes 26'x26' 676sqft really quickly. Posted by: Drive by at December 30, 2023 06:11 PM (MNhXM) Things that are intended to be 'not a primary residence' have a tendency to become 'primary residences' or 'unauthorized secondary dwelling units' or any number of other uses that should have more stingent oversite. Plans change or just fall through, new owners have different plans than the original builder, owners flat-out lie about their intentions... Governments are sort of forced to legislate to the lowest-common-denominator/most-hostile-denominator. It's part of why governments suck--and always will, even under the best of circumstances. Let's say I'm a Zerowater hobbyist ...
I couldn't get my new replacement filter to stop leaking. After installing the filter in the water dispenser, I kept tightening it almost to the point of overtightening. No dice. Bad filter (after careful examination)? No. Then i checked the lands on the dispenser. Nothing obvious, but there was the -slightest- hint of calcification. Just a little roughness. So I soaked some Cue Tips with distilled white vinegar and went to work. Pro tip: don't use anything abrasive. That worked. No more leaking. Posted by: mrp at December 30, 2023 06:36 PM (rj6Yv) 67

In my neck of the woods, it isn't even a building material--it's an insulation material, or an in-fill wall material that's placed within a big timber frame. For all its flaws, timber construction is very flexible, very forgiving, and probably the most new-user-friendly building system we have. Straw bale walls have to be 'compressed' before the side treatments are applied. They often have the roof trusses installed (or the entire roof) so that the bales compress due to the weight of the roof.
The side wall (inside and out) should be applied after compression is complete. Posted by: AZ deplorable moron at December 30, 2023 06:41 PM (Th1r/) 77

I even have my preferred brand (stadetler, the white ones) that I won't do without. One nice thing that I have now that I didn't when I bowed out is a whole lot of comic book omnibuses: oversized hardcover books with sewn binding. The binding is key, because these books stay open on their own: so I can open the book to a particularly cool drawing, lay the book on my desk, and use the comic for reference. (without having to constantly re-open a book) So I can fill my sketchbook with a lot of Jim Lee poses! Even if I can't ape his style of quality... An eraser is a very important tool. I even have my preferred brand (stadetler, the white ones) that I won't do without.
-- erasers are crucial to my style of drawing, and how I define many if not most of my lines/ shadows/ borders. I like the retractable ones that IIRC Pentel makes. Essentially just a big tube eraser encased in a pencil-shaped container. They're not fancy, but they suit my style very well. In good news, it soaks into the leather and makes it good and waterproof, which is what I wanted. Posted by: Kindltot Pecard's is what I have/use. I never thought of making it. Well done! Posted by: AZ deplorable moron at December 30, 2023 07:46 PM (Th1r/) 186
181 I look at photos like the ones in the post and on Martini Farmer's site and marvel at them. Then I start thinking: "OK, JTB, which film, lens and camera body should you use? And where is that exposure meter?"

I was thinking of melting lanolin and Vaseline together to make a leather waterproofer. Lanolin is amazing stuff.

186 ... "Do the new cams catch that? I loved tripanx."
I've lost track of which films will produce a certain effect. Been away from photography too long. I read that Tri-X is still out there and is favored for that 'certain' look. Can't recall which color film I used for my projects and competition entries. Posted by: JTB at December 30, 2023 07:56 PM (7EjX1) 193
I only use Kiwi on boots.
I've walked four sets of soles off my original pair of Jump Boots from 1990 using the polish methods I learned in the Army. They need soles again but my guy shut down during Covid and I have no idea what happened to him. I might give it a shot myself. Become a hobby Cobbler.
