Top Story

The New York Times is suing OpenAI and Microsoft over copyright infringement by ChatGPT and Copilot. (Tom's Hardware)

This suit seems more substantive than some earlier ones, with examples showing that ChatGPT will reproduce large chunks of NYT articles word-for-word.

Where the case falls down is the NYT's attempt to paint itself as, if not a paragon of virtue, at least a public good, when the organisation is the editorial equivalent of pancreatic cancer, if pancreatic cancer were communicable.

It's no real surprise that ChatGPT does this, of course. It's yet another weakness of building a language model rather than a fact model. Facts cannot be copyrighted.

Quariding Shire has resorted to putting up road signs telling drivers not to trust their GPS. (ABC)

Though to be precise, your GPS is not the issue; it's the mapping software connected to your GPS unit that is the problem. It does not distinguish between a dirt road and a sealed one, or in rainy season, a temporary river and a sealed road.

Quariding Shire is only two hours out of Perth so this has thus far merely inconvenienced people and not killed anyone, but further inland things could be worse. Although further inland there aren't any sealed roads, so it's harder to go wrong.

It's okay, but it doesn't do anything particularly well.

Wow! One can ward off dementia by *only* walking 4,000 steps per day. That's the equivalent of 1.78 miles. In Chicago for example a city block is 660 feet in length. One would therefor have to walk 15 city blocks to achieve that distance.

Whether one could actually walk that distance in Chicago unmolested is not addressed in the article.

Finally found a huge one, awkward to work with in the car . . . and it did not show the area where we were staying. The map on the "Hi, Welcome to Homewood, AL!" tourist flyer we found in a shopping district nearby was vastly more useful.

Maybe it's not the physical effort in walking nearly two miles per day that staves off dementia but the fact that deep uninterrupted sleep is pretty much ensured after that degree of effort.

In sleep the brains 'housekeeping crew' comes in and cleans the place up. In my youth I had to write a paper for a high school science fair on sleep deprivation and its physical effect and it was pretty scary.

It seems to have been more of a 'desk calculator', advertised as 'compact' (it looks to be about 16x24x14 inches). Hall-Scott was based in San Jose/Berkeley area in various ways for decades. If I'd known about this thing I would have integrated it into the SF book, for sure! What an obscure artifact. No info at all about it that I can find anywhere.

Everyone focused on the Federal position.

South Carolina in particular said that they were separating from the Union specifically due to their commitment to maintaining slavery.

Didn't really matter what the fed position was.

As the former governor of South Carolina, she seems to be ignorant of that little fact.

220 Gaming on a Mac? I was an old Mac user since the Fat Mac, but it didn't translate into jobs. The PC did, along with Unix and VMS systems. I did enjoy Marathon but it wasn't Doom.

The Mac now? My office has one for development on iPhones and it costs more than four PC desktops AND their licensing means we barely make money with iPhone products. Maybe EA and UbiSoft can make a profit on Apple, but we can't - and most of the medium and small biz I work with agree.
