Ten Years Ago
One thing social media is good for is posting stories and having everyone get worked up about them without checking to see if they're true, or even recent. Still, this did happen. Woman choked and raped by ex-boyfriend after dispatcher informs her there are no cops to help - and instead tells her to ask attacker to leave
A terrified woman from Josephine County, Oregon, dialed 911 to report that her violent ex-boyfriend is trying to break into her home, but in response she was told that there are no officers on duty to help her. The cash-strapped sheriff’s department in the county had been forced to lay off 23 of its 29 deputies after losing millions in federal aid. The remaining six officers had their shifts slashed to eight hours Monday through Friday. Unfortunately for the woman faced with an out-of-control jilted lover, her 911 call came on a Saturday. Eventually, the crazed man forced his way into the house, choked his former girlfriend and raped her without no one there to stop him. The suspect, Michael Bellah, was later arrested and pleaded guilty to kidnapping, assault and sex abuse.
Someone posted the 911 call on Twitter, and it's pretty horrific. Someone else reported that the lady had a conviction on her record for drug possession, which is why she couldn't have a gun, but I've seen no confirmation of that. In any event, the article focuses on the residents of the county voting against a tax increase to fund more police and how terrible that is. Well, on one hand, hey, they voted for this, now they have to live with it. On the other hand, I'll bet you a gazillion bucks that that county still fully funds welfare services and diversity officers and school administrators tasked to "support LBGQLMNOP+-* youth". I posted that on Twitter, and the comment got a lot of opinions. 183 likes, a few who were carping on me for being insensitive to trans youth and a couple who thought they had a trump card by telling me the county was strongly Republican. My reply was simple: What difference does that make? I live in what is literally the most Republican city in the country (70%) & we fund all that shit. Government always cuts essential services to justify raising taxes, no one will vote for a tax hike to fund the high school trans club, they will for cops. And that, I think, is the core problem with all levels of government. Fine, a federal grant ended which they had been using to fund police. They have a budget crunch. They have to make cuts or raise taxes. What they WANT to do is raise taxes, but to JUSTIFY that, they make cuts or threaten to make cuts, in essential services, for the simple reason that people will vote to increase taxes for essential services, while almost nobody will vote to raise taxes to fund drag queen story hour at the library or the new playground in the park, the contract for which happens to be held by the mayor's brother. And this poor woman suffered for it. I think there ought to be a mandated hierarchy of expenditures, say, police, fire, EMT, schools, and so on, down to paying for the sign to rename the local dog park after Tits McGee, and municipalities should be required to cut from the bottom up if cuts are needed. Each state could pass its own hierarchy list, and all the municipalities in the state would have to follow it.

Contrary to popular belief, Chinese water torture was most likely not invented in Asia.
Its first known description appears in a text written by Italian scholar Hippolytus de Marsiliis, who lived in the 15th century. Hippolytus seemed to have a certain fascination with inflicting cruel punishments on people because he known for studying sleep deprivation as a method of torture. In his writings, he meticulously described how a lack of sleep and aggressive interrogation methods can effectively extract information from a victim. It’s no wonder this same person would devise a method whose main purpose was to drive a person mad. However, the method he devised originated from an erroneous conclusion. Supposedly, he observed how drops of water would, over time, erode a rock’s surface. And he believed that when applied to humans, the same would occur. That’s right, Hippolytus thought that the water could drill a hole into a person’s skull. It would take thousands of years for any physical damage to occur from water droplets. But that doesn’t mean that Chinese water torture wasn’t effective.

So, Mutekimaru (that's the name of the fish) swims in a tank that has a grid displayed on the back of the aquarium. The squares on the grid are attributed to a button, i.e. A, B, up, down, left and right. Ferries across the Mississippi at St Louis were already established by the time a lot of people were heading to Oregon and California. I think it was a decade or so later before dependable ferry service was established on the Missouri. But why pay for two ferry rides if you were headed to the Far West?

I dunno - I am not very creative tonight. I had (elective) surgery 2 weeks ago, and it's taking a lot longer for my 60+ year old body to recuperate than it used to take me in my 30's.....
Unfortunately, Mr. TiFW wants the 30-year-old recuperator to be here, and doesn't understand that WANTING it doesn't make it so. And he had to miss Christmas with the rest of his family this year because BOTH of us were expecting that 30-year-old to bounce back in time to make the long drive to West Texas, rather than this 60-year-old buzzard sleeping her ass off at home this past week 😂❤

Watched Return To Oz tonight. Last time I saw this I was in...freakin'...elementary school, I think. Maybe towards the end so...early 90s?
Anyway...
I liked it!
It's a Disney production. I know, I know...*spit*...but it's wonderfully charming. Fairuza Balk, probably best known for playing the main antagonist in 1996's The Craft, does a fine job playing Dorothy Gale. Seriously big slippers to fill and she did I admirably.
The film is...weird. It came at a time just before family films were stripped of all sense of scariness, danger and dread. It gets pretty dark and there's just so much that's kind of weird. But I think that's what makes it so charming. But it's a quality family films lack which is such a shame. Kids need these things in their stories. It's such a mistake to think they lack the intellectual and emotional depth and the maturity to handle heavy moments or themes.
The film is also fun to look at. Set and creature designs are memorable. Tik-Tok, the mechanical soldier, is just cool.
Anyway, for nine bucks it's an easy recommendation.

Okey NURSE RICHARD here...NARCAN is an Opiate "Antagonist" meaning it counteracts the opiate effects.
So if you use a NARCAN (SPRAY) on an Opiate OVERDOSE..it will wake them up. But they still have to go to an ER as the effects are short lasting and they need further treatment.

Could a prohibited person still obtain a crossbow? I would think that would be a pretty good defensive weapon for women at "house range" distances.
The defender would still be capable of wielding a distance weapon before being forced to reach for the baseball bat.

It's been twenty years... but when a unit deploys they button up their assigned barracks and motorpool. Personnel gear left behind is stuffed into wall lockers and shoved into one room. Personnal vehicles are packed in tight into their motorpool. A rear detachment stays behind to fulfill certain functions. Minimal is keeping the pilot light on. Coordinate with pushing replacements forward.. as needed, etc.
Not like some other unit moves in.
The facilities are left 95% vacant.

These are the ranks where the soldier has an apartment, and a car, and is old enough to begin having stuff for a life. married troops can leave it all with the spouse. Now they either have to unload it, take it all to the folks house, or pay out of pocket. I predict pawn shops near bases will be booming.
Even junior troops will get screwed. Does anyone think a 20 year old soldier who has been in for two years now has to unload his stereo, momentos, extra clothes, just because he has to go to korea for a year?
