Vapid Wannabe-Cheerleader Nikki Haley, When Asked About the Cause of the Civil War: "What Do You Think Caused It?"

She answered like this because she's a liberal-ish neocon, and she has no idea what actual conservatives think.

Actual conservatives think that the Civil War was fought over the issue of slavery. (Well, you can say "states rights," and there is some truth in that, but that elides the fact that the state right being fought over was the right for some people to own other people. The war wasn't fought over states rights generally, but about one state "right" in particular.)

Nikki Haley had no idea how to answer so she punted the question back to the questioner.

Nikki Haley declined to say that slavery was a cause of the Civil War on Wednesday evening, placing the blame, instead, on the role of government.

The former UN Ambassador and South Carolina governor, who has seen her star rise in the first-in-the-nation primary state, was appearing at a town hall event in Berlin, New Hampshire, when a voter asked her to identify the cause of the war.

"I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run," she responded. "The freedoms and what people could and couldn't do. What do you think the cause of the Civil War was or argument?"

The questioner, who could not be easily heard off camera, was apparently unpersuaded by Haley's response. When she asked him what he believed the cause of the war was, he replied that he wasn't running for president.

"I think it always comes down to the role of government and what the rights of the people are," Haley replied. "And I will always stand by the fact that I think government was intended to secure the rights and freedoms of the people. It was never meant to be all things to all people. Government doesn't need to tell you how to live your life. They don't need to tell you what you can and can't do. They don't need to be a part of your life. They need to make sure that you have freedom. We need to have capitalism. We need to have economic freedom. We need to make sure that we do all things so that individuals have the liberties so that they can have freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to do or be anything they want to be without government getting in the way."

That might sound good, but that's part of Nikki Haley's song-and-dance about why we can't outlaw genital mutilation for children. It's the standard neocon hustle about any social issue: "The government shouldn't be involved in deciding what experimental surgeries children can get. I'm a Real Conservative!"

Kochservative more like it am i rite

When the questioner said it was "astonishing" to hear her respond "without mentioning the word slavery," Haley replied: "What do you want me to say about slavery?" She then asked for the next question.

She is very maladroit and has all the charm of a toe blister. Not sure why Boeing decided to shower her with millions of dollars.

Just kidding, I know why.

DeSantis pounded her.

He wants her out of the way, of course. The anti-Trump vote consists of two distinct parts: Actual conservative populists like me who think Donald Trump is a fuck-up only capable of tweets and rally statements, not actually enacting any of his alleged program into law,* and simple liberal neocons who object to Trump not because he can't implement his own claimed policy but because they hate that policy and want to return to Country Club Corporatism.

With Nikki Haley in the race, the latter type of voter will vote for this liberalism-but-with-tax-breaks-for-the-rich pablum.

DeSantis wants her out so that this kind of establishment corporatist has no other choice but to support him, at least, if they want to oppose Trump.

Weird that Trump was (is?) considering her as a vice presidential pick.

Apparently Trump can't deny he's mulling adding this establishment shill as a vice president, because his son is out there now telling Fox News he'll stop his father from picking her.

onald Trump Jr. said Monday he would go to "great lengths" to prevent GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley from joining his father's campaign.

Trump Jr. said during a Christmas Day interview that he views Haley as the "preferred candidate" of the Washington establishment.

"I wouldn't have her on, and I would go to great lengths to make sure that that doesn't happen," Trump Jr. said on Newsmax's "The Balance."

"Nikki Haley wants never-ending wars," he continued. "She's a puppet of the establishment in Washington D.C. She's the new favorite candidate of the billionaire class, because they want control -- no different than academia at Harvard and using, you know, their billions to exercising influence. They want someone they control. Ron DeSantis has proven that he doesn't have what it takes to be on that stage. He's embarrassed himself that way. She's now the preferred candidate."

Trump Jr. suggested Haley would try to sabotage Trump's campaign "from within" if she was chosen as his running mate.

"No, I would not want Nikki Haley to be there," he added. "By the way, all you'd get is her and team trying to destroy Donald Trump from within, forever. The second she ever got that, you know, anointment, it would be a disaster of epic proportions. So, I would hope that never is on the table, and I don't think it is."

This kid:

* I also strongly, strongly suspect that Trump would use his second term -- if somehow he won one -- to repair his reputation with the leftwing media whose affirmation and praise he craves. And that means selling out his actual supporters in order to "evolve in office" to please the people whose opinions matter to him.

I think that Trump knows who loves him and who does not and will work like a workaholic to make life better for those who appreciate him (this also makes life better for normal people who don't particularly support him). THat is what the liberal historians and the education establishment want you to believe. But it is not completely true.

Yes slavery was part of it but there were a lot of other issues. The high tariffs paid by the South which financed major projects in the North and a lot of other issue which the Northern merchants all favored the North over the South.

In other words it was much like what we have now when the Democrats hold both houses of congress.

52 Fwiw, we had the civil war because a bunch of fuckwads were trying to renege the deal, which is referred to as the Constitution of the United States.

It was the same bunch of fuckwads that are screaming about climate change now.

If they had wanted to end slavery they would have just bought out the slaves, however that is not what they wanted, they wanted to force the slave holders to surrender the slaves without compensation.

Basically it was another illegal taking by do-gooder know nothings.

We should have just bought out the slaveholders at market value which would have given the slaveholders enough to recapitalize farms, businesses, whatever.

But there's no righteous indignation and hatred there

87 In the years/decades prior to the Civil War the northern and southern economies were joined at the hip. Almost all southern commodities and goods were sold up north while northern manufactured goods were sold down south. Of all the railroad track mileage laid in the south, 75% of it ran south to north while the remaining 25% ran east to west. Cities like Charleston, New Orleans, and Vicksburgh had much more in common with Boston, Philadelphia, and NYC than they had with each other. BUT the one thing the southern states had in common - which they did not share with the north - was slavery.

Anyone who cannot acknowledge that slavery was the main cause of the Civil War does not belong in public office.

123 Actual conservatives think that the Civil War was fought over the issue of slavery.
-
It was part of the dispute.

The problem is the question of "Should slavery be practiced inside the United States?" was solved by the South's secession. At that point the dispute, when it was actually fought, was over the evil notion that the federal government had authority over the states which could never be ended.

I say evil because this contradicts the fundamental truth that the federal government owes its existence to the permission given to it by the states in ratifying the Constitution. Implicit in that arrangement is that the permission is temporary and conditional and can be revoked in part (by secession) or in whole (by abolishing by whatever means are available).

126 "Actual conservatives think that the Civil War was fought over the issue of slavery."

I think it was more complicated and nuanced than that. Yes, slavery and the moral objection to it was a major factor. But it was also an economic struggle with slavery playing a role. The North needed low-skilled workers in droves. Where to find them? Gee, there are millions of laborers enduring terrible conditions down South, who would probably be happy to come North. But they're not free to leave. Hmmmmm . . . .

Posted by: Elric Blade at December 28, 2023 03:07 PM (iFTx/)

127 Yes slavery was part of it but there were a lot of other issues.

There were peace negotiations before Lincoln took office. Southern democrats were willing to give up every single one of those “other issues”. The only issue that mattered to them was the ”right” to spread slavery into non-slave states. And that was the one issue Lincoln and the Republicans representing him in those negotiations were unwilling to fold on.

We could use Republicans like that now.

Posted by: White House refrigerator at December 28, 2023 03:07 PM (3y5Ij)

157 Ah yes the war of northern aggression. This will be good for generating lots of comments.

My current opinion is that a quite a few of the northern abolitionists were less concerned about the practice of slavery than about those dirty democrats filling the country with savage negroes. Oh they told themselves it was all about virtue and ending slavery; but much like today's AWLFs promoting abortion it was really about wanting to reduce the number of dark skinned people.

So...Trump's "high" vote total in 2020 is proof of how popular he is, while Biden's "high" vote total is proof that it was rigged?

The fact that both candidates received a large number of votes is just a function of COVID-era voting rule changes that made it way easier to cast a vote. Whether you think that was a good idea or not, the fact is, that's why both Trump and Biden increased dramatically from 2016.

232 I'm resigned to the fact that a Republican won't reclaim the White House, likely ever, so it boils down to this academic debate; does Trump, who'd be stymied at every turn and hounded day and night by the left and the GOP get anything done? Or, do I accept the standard GOPe failure theater wrapped up as "conservative values" as they sell out the base (again) and continue selling out the country.

What, specifically, would a DeSantis (or anyone else in the GOP) get passed as lasting legislation that matters? Anything? It'd be pulled apart the second the next Democrat gets selected to be prez. And note who does, and doesn't make an attempt to trash what the Democrats have embedded as policy.

This is really the issue isn't it? What difference does it make who the R candidate is if all their policies are trashed on day one, as *biden did?

240 Ace is wrong about the Civil War being about states’ rights at all.

The Confederate states supported states’ rights when a states’ rights position was beneficial to slavery, and they opposed states’ rights when states’ rights undermined slavery.

That’s why the slave states supported the federal Fugitive Slave Act, which intruded on the sovereignty of free states for the benefit of slavery. And why the Confederate constitution prohibited the states of the Confederacy from outlawing slavery.

The slave states claimed to be for states’ rights to try to avoid the reality of what they were really for. And now the Leftists use the same trick to try to tar states’ rights — which is a big part of the conservative focus on federalism — as neo-confederate. We shouldn’t help them do it.

Now you're just being deliberately dishonest.

Everyone who pays attention knows that the pattern in a Presidential election year is we stay up most of the night if it's close and maybe get a deciding state projection at 2 or 3 in the morning. This time, seven states all simultaneously stopped counting, sent the observers home, and then in the morning announced that they had kept counting after all, and Biden was magically ahead by just enough to avoid automatic recounts in any of them. And nobody gets to double check their work.

It is clear to anyone with character that those seven states were all stolen. But to get the cowards in the judiciary to do anything about it, you'd need to show what happened mechanically, and they refused to allow any evidence to be presented.

Or perhaps "their formulation" is simply that Trump lost, whether fairly or unfairly, legally or illegally, and there isn't necessarily a convincing pretext to believe that will be different in 2024. Or at least not enough to dismiss someone who turned a purple state red and in policy, legislation, and public statement has supported everything conservatives support. Who can only be considered 'Uniparty' or non-conservative by stringing together some theories that would mean he'd have to govern completely contrary to how he has the past 5 years. Oh, and the fact that the Donald has been personally slandering him without provocation and attacking him from the LEFT (save Disney, save Budweiser, Florida is a bad state...), while also defending the vaccines... well, there's nothing non-conservative to worry about there...

There's always the chance he'd end up a squish or sellout, or fail at implementing at the Federal level the change he did at the State level, but I think it's well worth the risk.

That's not how things are, however. Trump was done dirty in the 2020 election, and is being done dirty again in this election. If the Republican Party is complicit, or stands by and allows it, they deserve to lose (which they will when Trump voters stay home). I think the GOPe is basically on board with this, now, assuming Trump will lose, or not even be on the ballot, causing someone else (Haley or DeSantis) to lose, but Trump will be out of the GOP system by 2028, where normalcy can return and we'll get to pick between Rubio, Ernst, and Christie.

294 I would suggest a bunch of you read Lincoln's writings and speeches leading up to his election and the war. A bunch of you are making suppositions not supported by anything he ever said.

And as for what started the war - silly cadets at Ft. Sumter firing on a federal fort and giving Lincoln the opportunity to respond to an attack, not be the attacker. He was as aware of the concerns around the states being supreme and the entities that created the central government in the first place. The South took away this concern by firing first.

He was an abolitionist, but he was mostly concerned about saving the Union. The South, while concerned about self-government were absolutely unwilling to concede on slavery; their politics on gutting the Missouri Compromise forced the issue to the front with even more energy. There were multiple discussions during the war to stop the fighting, but the South would not budge on slavery, so the war continued because of slavery.

All documented, letters and memos easily readable.

Posted by: x

So, "history is bunk," as Henry Ford said? No. The Civil War was a watershed event in US history. That's why we still need to discuss and argue over it, civilly. Each side had their reason for fighting, and those reasons need to be discussed and analyzed. That is why I do not consider Southern sympathizers (including our own Puddinhead) to be my enemies, but rather fellow contributors to an ongoing dialogue (sorry for the lefty language there, but it seems appropriate here).

It's also why I consider the demonization of Lincoln to be as illegitimate as the left's demonization of the Confederacy.

History is complicated, because people are complicated.

297 234 Serious question: Does anyone in 2023 really care about the cause of a war that ended 150 years ago? We have much bigger battles to fight. This was a silly "gotcha" question (that Nikki obviously fumbled) from a planted "voter."
Posted by: Elric Blade at December 28, 2023 03:25 PM (iFTx/)

I'll come down on the other side of this. Questions like this aren't actually about the answer, it's a way of clouding what you're actually asking. The real answer is not necessarily the direct answer to the question itself, it's what part they focus on that gives you insight into the mind of the politician.

If someone asked a prospective office holder "what caused the downfall of Rome?" and they answered "Well, that's easy, those weak and pesky Christians with their Slave Morality got too much control." then I'm going to have some serious questions about that person's leadership, even if the downfall of an empire 1500 years ago doesn't really affect me much.

Ok, then let's flip that: what will Desantis do (or can he do) to prevent another blatant steal?

That is actually a question. No one (including Trump) wants to talk about it and everyone man, woman and child seems to say fuck all about it.

Most are still refusing to even say that it WAS a blatant steal, furthering the gaslighting we all saw with our own eyes. So, until someone faces up to that reality, we are completely fucked no matter what we do. So I do not see much reason to get pissed at Trump or his supporters or Ron and his. I am not sure there IS a good answer aside from pulling the pin- THAT is what pisses ME off.

Basically that it will be matter of fact that he will do what Trump didn't. I believe Trump won't get a whiff of the White House. If and its a big one IF he does, I have the same worry that ace has about making good with some on the left. It has happened to the best of some old conservative warriors, even Goldwater(usually over some young piece of ass they're married to).

For fucking once I would like DeSantis people to explain how he will accomplish anything, your true-con hero, with a hostile GOP/Republican Party thwarting your every step. Not too mention a Deep State that controls the law, the military and D party that isn't afraid to use it. DeSantis would have the GOPe hanging around his neck, same as Trump did if he were to win the nomination and office. This fact really seems to elude DeSantis supporters. 345 Lincoln really did not have a opinion on Slavery …

“ The sentiment that contemplates the institution of slavery in this country as a wrong is the sentiment of the Republican party. It is the sentiment around which all their actions, all their arguments, circle; from which all their propositions radiate… You may turn over everything in the Democratic policy from beginning to end, whether in the shape it takes on the statute-book, in the shape it takes in the Dred Scott decision, in the shape it takes in conversation, or the shape it takes in short maxim-like arguments—it everywhere carefully excludes the idea that there is anything wrong in it.”— Abraham Lincoln, Seventh Joint Debate at Alton, Illinois, October 15, 1858

“ I always thought that all men should be free; but if any should be slaves, it should be first those who desire it for themselves, and secondly those who desire it for others. Whenever I hear any one arguing for slavery, I feel a strong impulse to see it tried on him personally.”— Abraham Lincoln, Address to an Indiana regiment, p. 844

376 Southern state legislatures wrote and approves acts of secession. Jefferson Davis was elected and gave his inaugural address 3 weeks before Lincoln took his oath of office. The "CSA" issued ultimatums for Federal troops to vacate fortifications on "its soil". The "CSA" had already seized post offices and arsenals. When the new Lincoln administration refused to leave Fort Sumter, the rebel government ordered it to be taken by force. I don't know what more the rebels could have done to provoke Lincoln to call for volunteers.

Posted by: mrp at December 28, 2023 03:44 PM (rj6Yv)
==
Yep, they did, but it was a federal fort - US government property. It's nice to call for it to be vacated. But that is a matter of negotiations at that point. When you fire on it - it changes the game, and clearly Lincoln was hoping they would do just that. They did. Now it is an insurrection and a firing on US Troops.

Bingo. At that point all legislative declarations are moot. The war was started, and now Lincoln had the moral and political authority to do what he wanted - maintain the Union.

Simplicity, I am thinking. They are here for the argument and do not want to do the long con of building an identity separate from that. We almost all choose some sort of thing that is either a play on words, something we find funny or something that touches on us in some way or another. If they come in with 'confederatefanboi'61' we'd probably guess he was a plant right off.

Even so, the arguments are made from a completely different mindset. They do not use our terms or frame an argument the way we would- so they out themselves immediately even if they did have masterbatin' pete's nic.

Is Trump now willing to take Leftist positions to trash conservatives just to elevate his power (not conservatism; hopefully it's for his power / ego, and not Leftism...)? No, he won't default to Leftism. But his image is more important to him than principle, and it's not inconceivable to think he might give in to the Left more in a lame-duck term than he did in his first term or while competing for conservative votes in a primary...

452 Nikki tried to give a technical nuanced answer for the origin of the US Civil War. The party line answer is slavery which in reality let’s the Democrat Party off the hook. The real answer, the most accurate answer is:

The Democrat Party instigated the Civil War by creating the secessionist movement of the southern states with the first act of armed insurrection by firing upon Fort Sumpter.

The only people agitating for secession from the Union were Democrats. You can come up with all kinds of reasons why various groups wanted out of the Union, however, the indisputable facts are the Democrat Party, who were owned lock, stock and barrel by the slave owners through the power, money and influence were the primary group who advocated for Secession.

No one should buy into the nonsense that the political party who held yearly fundraising under the banner of Jefferson-Jackson Dinners was not the same entity then as today. If you’re claiming pre Civil War figures as the founders of your party you own their past as well. The tactics of group division are the same then as today, instead of just WASPS at the top of the political food chain it’s now a multitude of groups.

But he gets shit done and he fights. And he's young and could have 8 years to get shit done. I like him over Trump for those reasons. But it's hard not to vomit when I hear braqging about how great Bidenomics has been and how great he is for small business.

I've been an owner of a small biz for over 40 years and his reign of idiocy has been by far the worst of any president during that time.

Inflation and his net zero BS hits the business hard. And personally speaking - well, a small business is pretty personal after all, my retirement funds plunged let's just say, more than a few hundreds of thousands of dollars shortly after he took office.

Not whining, I've been very fortunate. But no humor found when he uses how "great" Bidenomics has been and his being a champion of small business as talking points.

War is sanctioned violence. Morality has nothing to do with it. The South made a gamble, played their cards very poorly to start. Fought valiantly and bravely, though out supplied, because of superior battlefield leadership. Prayed like hell Lincoln would lose in 1864 election because they knew it was over after Gettysburg. Refused to negotiate settlement while one was still available because of slavery. They helped make sure Sherman's march would happen, and Sherman was an asshole in South Carolina, because he blamed them for starting the fighting and felt they needed to be punished.

If the South's political leadership was as excellent as their military men were, the war never would have started.

Signed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act – the largest tax reform package in history.
More than 6 million American workers received wage increases, bonuses, and increased benefits thanks to the tax cuts.
A typical family of four earning $75,000 received an income tax cut of more than $2,000 – slashing their tax bill in half.

Small businesses can now deduct 20 percent of their business income.
Businesses can now deduct 100 percent of the cost of their capital investments in the year the investment is made.
Since the passage of tax cuts, the share of total wealth held by the bottom half of households has increased, while the share held by the top 1 percent has decreased.
Over 400 companies have announced bonuses, wage increases, new hires, or new investments in the United States.

So I have some sympathy that he will cave to the lefties because he already has in the GOP primary. 494 And all of which Biden reversed on day one

Achieving a Secure Border

Secured the Southern Border of the United States.

Built over 400 miles of the world’s most robust and advanced border wall.
Illegal crossings have plummeted over 87 percent where the wall has been constructed.
Deployed nearly 5,000 troops to the Southern border. In addition, Mexico deployed tens of thousands of their own soldiers and national guardsmen to secure their side of the US-Mexico border.
Ended the dangerous practice of Catch-and-Release, which means that instead of aliens getting released into the United States pending future hearings never to be seen again, they are detained pending removal, and then ultimately returned to their home countries.
Entered into three historic asylum cooperation agreements with Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala to stop asylum fraud and resettle illegal migrants in third-party nations pending their asylum applications.
Entered into a historic partnership with Mexico, referred to as the “Migrant Protection Protocols,” to safely return asylum-seekers to Mexico while awaiting hearings in the United States.
Fully enforced the immigration laws of the United States.

Restoring American Leadership Abroad

Restored America’s leadership in the world and successfully negotiated to ensure our allies pay their fair share for our military protection.

Secured a $400 billion increase in defense spending from NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) allies by 2024, and the number of members meeting their minimum obligations more than doubled.
Credited by Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg for strengthening NATO.
Worked to reform and streamline the United Nations (UN) and reduced spending by $1.3 billion.
Allies, including Japan and the Republic of Korea, committed to increase burden-sharing.
Protected our Second Amendment rights by announcing the United States will never ratify the UN Arms Trade Treaty.
Returned 56 hostages and detainees from more than 24 countries.
Worked to advance a free and open Indo-Pacific region, promoting new investments and expanding American partnerships.
Advanced peace through strength.

Withdrew from the horrible, one-sided Iran Nuclear Deal and imposed crippling sanctions on the Iranian Regime.

There was a narrow, narrow window where DeSantis could have won.
It was in being to the right of Trump. Look at the complaints of his supporters.
That's the one reason I said he should have run.
Ron didn't do that.
He hired Chris Christie's former campaign manager.
He went on Erick Erickson's radio show.
He's gathered a bunch of RINO endorsements.

But let's look at what got him in the conversation to start with, his wins in FL. Why in the F did he stop that once he started running? Like, here's some easy lay ups to keep you in the game and he's dribbling in circles at half court.

505 “The American Civil War was fought for almost as many reasons as there were participants, but for much of the Southern Planter Class, it was unquestionably about the preservation of slavery.”

Seriously, how hard would that have been?

The Lost Cause was real, but it was lost when Jefferson Davis rolled Robert Toombs in the Montgomery convention. Obviously, well before the Yankees ever got involved.
Davis wrapping himself in the mantle in the aftermath of the war is both infuriating and insulting.

It’s true that the North didn’t embrace the abolition of slavery as a rallying cry until Cold Harbor.
It’s also pretty irrelevant.

After generations of educational malpractice, it’s not very useful to point out that the same percentage of the population of both Pennsylvania and South Carolina were members of abolitionist groups.
Or that there were black Planters.
Or any number of other factoids that would complicate a strictly Manichean good/evil dichotomy.
(But it’s kind of fun to lean into the Marxist belief system and point out that the Planter Class actively conspired with Northern interests to keep the South poor. They ground them between excise taxes and tariffs like colony

I was very pleasantly surprised when he was great.
He fought the Dems, the GOP and the Media and still kept most of his promises.
He kept trying to build his wall with Mexico, but the GOP stopped him cold.

The next election will be a huge, blatant steal. They cannot allow a non-establishment candidate to win.
Who do you want running, a squish who will not say that they're stealing another election or someone who will fight?
That's the only question you have to answer.

508 Slavery was the excuse ginned up by the North after the tremendous bloodshed wasn't justified by the real reason, which was tariffs and excise taxes.

Lincoln and the Republicans understood that the 2 March 1861 Morrill Tariff would result in secession of Southern states from the Union.

The US Congress even tried a compromise where they would guarantee the Southern states could permanently keep slavery by Constitutional amendment (the Corwin Amendment), if they would only not secede and submit to the new excise taxes designed to force the South to purchase manufactured goods from Northern industrialists instead of Europe.

In his inaugural address Lincoln said: “I have no purpose, directly or indirectly, to interfere with the institution of slavery in the States where it exists. I believe I have no lawful right to do so, and I have no inclination to do so.”

President Lincoln made the deal clear to the South: Stay in the Union and slavery is guaranteed by the government of the United States of America for ever.

Slavery was a component of the war, but it was not fought in order to abolish it.

522 * I also strongly, strongly suspect that Trump would use his second term -- if somehow he won one -- to repair his reputation with the leftwing media whose affirmation and praise he craves. And that means selling out his actual supporters in order to "evolve in office" to please the people whose opinions matter to him.

there's been no evidence of this, but loads of evidence that politicians like DeSantis "grow" in office to become W or McCain or Romney.

I don't think Trump is perfect, but cmon - to claim he's going to go liberal after what he's been through and pretend instead that DeSantis isn't likely to be a GOPe regular (DeSantis is surrounded by GOPe types), is ignoring all of republican history of the last 50 years.

I get not liking Trump, but your anti-trump argument is not even remotely persuasive nor based in facts. Saying he can't enact a conservative agenda - when the GOP is 98.9% against a conservative agenda (thank you Mitch McConnell) is ignoring the fact that a politician like DeSantis will face the same anti-conservative GOP. Is someone like DeSasntis really going to take on the establishment and secure the border? I highly, highly, highly doubt it.

Posted by: I forgot my name b/c I haven't posted in 6 months at December 29, 2023 07:52 AM (ky+MF)

523 Lincoln himself, in a letter to Horace Greeley, said the war was not over slavery. He said, "My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone, I would also do that."

The right to leave the Union, not slavery, was the state right that was the cause of the war. The four states of the upper South did not leave the Union over the question of slavery, but Lincoln's call for 75,000 volunteers to invade the original seven seceding states. Their reasoning was that a union that could only be maintained at the point of a bayonet had ceased to be a union.
