  • If you were looking to buy the latest Apple Watch Series 9 or Ultra 2, you can't. (Tech Crunch)

    I can. I don't want to, but I can. But you can't.

It's been banned from sale in the US (though not Australia) over claimed patent infringement involving the light-based pulse oximetry sensor. Apple could just take the pulse oximeter out - I'm not sure how many people care about that - but until they do, or until they make headway in their appeal, they can't sell the device in the US.

11 Evening and morning to all the fixed stars in the firmament!

Okay, kinda bombastic, but I'm short on sleep.

Yesterday at Miss Linda's urging, I went to the eye exam at the America's Best shop around the corner from me. Very nice and helpful people. I don't need glasses, which I could have told them, unless I want some; and I don't. (Though there were some nice non-Rx wraparound shades there.) Mild astigmatism is about all. The optometrist said I was one of the rare lucky ones.

I was nervous about it; I recalled the "puff of air" test from my last exam years ago. This time the puff was minimal, barely an inconvenience. Nothing touched my eyes, and everybody was cheerful and helpful. I went for the two optional tests, which boosted my change for the whole thing from $0 (EyeMed insurance) to $30.

I might go back for those Nike wraparound shades. Not sure they'll fit in the console compartment in my car, though.

It will. I have an old, 15+ year old workstation and it's been running Linux Mint for a few years now. Its run well. It is starting to have hardware failures but it's old. I say 15+ because it's probably closer to 20 years old. I have a laptop with Linux Ubuntu. It runs well but it also has some hardware failures popping up. Its 5 or 6 years old now. Linux is fine and will extend the life of an old machine.

Note being "good enough" may be no more than not having a TPM (crypto chip) on the motherboard, or the equivalent (like Intel's "platform trust" crap that uses the management engine (which is creepy).

There are ways around a lot of those requirements.

Windows 11 is spyware, basically, I concluded, after just installing a clean install on another partition to play with it.

34 I understand that Win11 is crapware, oops, I mean 'spyware' and I don't want it. At some point though, I realize that whatever Winsh!t we run, will become "unsupported".

Linux to the rescue? I don't know... how to deal. Hardware (meaning: outside- the-box electro-mechancal stuff) was my thing. Like, motors and conveyor belts and VFDs...

35 >> Can I download Linux Mint and set it up on a USB stick, so as to try it on the machine? If not, can I download LM from a Win 10 machine to the stick, then use it on the old XP desktop?

Yes to all. Download it, and I'd use a tool like Rufus to "burn" a bootable USB stick (it handles a lot of the details on how to make it bootable without problems).

Or, try it out on a virtual machine under Windows 10. I run several Linuxes under virtual machines on my machine here all the time. In fact, Fedora 39 is running now.

Mint is it's own distro. They offer "Cinnamon" and MATE desktop enviroments. GNOME 3 was a big dog to a lot of people, me included. I've run MATE ever since, although they say the modern GNOME is much better than it was.

And yes, all the popular Linux GNU FLOSS software is available for it.

38 Linux Mint comes with Libre Office Suite. It's fine for me. Depends on one's needs. I don't know how it is with heavy use. The laptop I'm using know has Win10. When MS stops updating it, Linux Mint goes on it. When my other two machines fail, finally. I'm looking around for laptops and WS's sans OS's. They are out there in Amazon Land.

There's also "live" USB sticks you can make. Boot that and the OS runs off the USB stick. This allows you to play around with it without putting it on the hard drive.

In fact, I think most of the standard install USB images are live images that have the full installation packages on the them.

42 Earlier this month I thought on 12/26 I'd hop in the car for a run to Evansville, IN, to check the area out. This morning I'd be rolling out of the halfway point, Birmingham, AL. But the time would have been very limited. And the car still needs an oil change and tire rotation, aside from the new wheels.

45 One site I looked at says an 8GB USB drive is roomy enough for Linux Mint. (Good thing, as my XP desktop does not recognize USB 3.0.) And apparently their own word processing and other apps come with it. So LM is not a bloated OS like Windows?

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at December 27, 2023 05:10 AM (omVj0)

46
Linux can be very minimal sized, if you want it to be and run on very small systems. It just depends on what all you install.

For example, OpenWRT is a linux flavor designed to run on small consumer routers. It's running on two routers I have here. It has 512MB of main RAM, and 256MB flash (I 'extroot' it with a 16GB USB stick to get more storage). And that runs the router fine.

I'm posting this from Chrome running under Fedora 39 virtual machine under Virtualbox (much preferred over Hyper-V) on Win 10.

The VM is allocated 4GB of memory and 3 CPU cores. Running kernel 6.6.7-200.fc39.x86_64, the system reports 1.3GB of memory being used. And much of that is Chrome itself.

It's using about 1GB main actual real memory on the host, near as I can figure.

56 I've learned since Windows 95 that a periodic reformat and reinstall of Windows is a requirement for a smooth running OS. All data other that what Windows requires to run is stored on a RAID array. The Windows install is backed each morning at 4AM using Macrium Reflect. Additionally, each disk on my desktop is synced with a backup computer that is a clone of my desktop using SyncBackPro. Microsoft has taught me some well learned lessons in the last 25 years of OS use.

You can do that. You will not like the USB stick experience though, it will be slow. You can and should connect a hard drive or ssd to the computer mainboard (motherboard) and install Mint onto that, creating a system that offers you the opportunity to select the OS you boot into.

I just opened my current bill, and they believe they never received the payment I mailed on 12/1 -- so they have that amount plus my December charges, plus about $35 in late fees, all tacked on. However, I just checked that bank account. That check cleared yesterday (!). I'll call them at 8:00 a.m. and insist those late fees and past due amount be removed. I've never had to call them before, so I don't know how reasonable they are or how much of a Karen ("Let me speak to your manager!") I'll have to be.

The home tower is Ubuntu and it's great.
Old Chromebook is GalliumOS and also is great.
I know the 'browser' issue comes up, the fact is they all suck and collect data so pick your poison.

LibreOffice is, in my not very humble opinion, WORLDS better than Word etc. and associated programs. I still have an older version of OpenOffice I run on a tower with XP, and it's fine but LibreOffice is superior.
I've done entire books in LibreOffice, downloaded to PDF and it's better than Word. No comparison.

As far as I know all Linux distros are very lightweight. They're good anyway but for extending the life of older computers they're ideal.

I switched from OO to LO only because LO can save in docx. Don't know about better, but different. I can format to "first line indent" in OO, but not in LO, unless you open a document formatted that way from OO. Then it's on the list. Wouldn't be a problem if every pub site didn't require docx format for submissions. F'ers.

146 Also, I mentioned an issue with printing out a Frigidaire manual at the office that wouldn't print past 5 pages likely due to some copyright coding, and that I would take it home and try it on the old HP5si.

Yes, the entire thing printed out just fine. The Big Kyocera Printer at work was sensing some copyright thing and refused to print out the whole thing.
I'd more expect that from a Big Brother Printer.

That's odd, I've always been able to first line indent in LO. Isn't it an option in paragraph styles? I don't remember, to be honest if I forget how to format anything I open older documents and look around at how they're formatted. I also have a spiral binder of settings and formatting notes.

And yes, requirements for docx drive me absolutely bonkers and I have bitched about this issue numerous times here and pretty much to anyone who will listen and many who won't!

171 Linux is great if one doesn't want to mess around with how things work. It's all those arcane command line switches that gets most people. In Africa I started with XENIX on a 286. It was our campus email server (very early 90s), moved to Slackware when that came on a gazillion floppies, each one downloaded individually across a trans-Atlantic cable from Fidonet (USA). Great fun and frustrations.
Linux has evolved well since then but until even the System stuff is tweakable via GUIs it will not replace Windows. See Apple with 'BSD'.
The big test is when major game developers produce Linux versions of their wares.
Also too many distros make it difficult for newcomers to decide.

Not quite. WP had an internal upheaval and never recovered. By the time the strife had quietened down Word was king. Netscape, which grew out of the original browser Mosaic, also rested on its laurels and underwent company shakedowns. So MS competitors mainly shot themselves in the foot. Same with Gary Kildall of Digital Research who messed up BIG with IBM - we could all have been running a GUI version of CP/M today, even Apple since it was popular on Apple IIs with the CPM card..

I picked it up at Best Buy for $1000 (normally ~$1500) shortly after Black Friday with the intent of replacing said MBP. So far, everything just seems to work. I subsequently pimped it out with 64GB of RAM (up from 16) and an additional 2TB SSD from which I'm booting Linux (the original 512GB SSD can keep the Windows 11 crap).
