The way I see it, Hamas started a war and if they want it to stop, they surrender. It's a timeless concept.

I first saw that mentioned in one of the James Bond novels, and thought it meant Britain held special boxing matches as entertainment for the masses during the holiday. (Whaddaya want, I was twelve.) Later I found it was called that because upper-class Britons would box up small gifts -- maybe castoffs, maybe unwanted presents? -- to give to the servants and tenant farmers.

Got to bed late and woke up only a little early. Last night again I locked the kittens and litter box out of the bedroom so they, in the form of big black Stirling, would not wake me at 3 a.m. It worked.

Just an FYI of possible bads news for you. This is the "Spacer's Choice" Edition of the game. I'm pretty sure it released without input from Obsidian and was instead their publisher. And no clue on if they fixed it but it was slammed horribly when they released it and most people said do not buy it and instead just go with the original version. But hey it is free, just giving you some Buyer Beware if it hasn't been fixed.

I guess she must need said sense of humor to deal with me. Her idea of a good Christmas gift, and I'm not kidding, is for me to take her to the big thrift store near us and let her choose something, shoes, pajamas, etc. If she'd, you know, *told* me that a while ago, we could have done that before 12/25.

Anyway, the black leopard, prenamed "Jagger" by the company, is standing on the foot of my bed for now. If I put it out here in the living room, I will glimpse it from the corner of my eye and think it's Stirling or a second black cat, it's just that size.

I just installed Win11 Pro to a separate partition on my main machine here just to play with it. Win 10 will go out of support after a while, so I figured I better get up to speed.

You can still install Win 11 in BIOS mode, I discovered, with the help of Rufus. Rufus will also apply some tricks for you to edit the install image to create a local account and bypass the requirement for a MS account (you can still get around that without Rufus, but it takes some tricks), turned off the TPM requirement and all that.

And the, first thing I do is install Open-Shell (formerly Classic Shell) and get a proper start menu back. Then I apply much of those fixes in the article.

The truncated context menu pissed me off right off the bat, and I had to search on how to get the old one back.

By BIOS mode, I mean "compatibility" mode of the UEFI firmware, which boots off a regular MBR disk, as opposed to GPT with EFI system partition and all that.

I doubt Windows 11 would install on an older machine with real non-UEFI firmware at all.

I think Rufus has to do some USB boot tricks to get this to work with the Win11 image.

No, I'm up too. Don't know who's on vacation, so I have no idea how busy today is going to be. I do have to watch a few mandatory work videos though, so there's that. At least I have a cup of tea (Ty-Phoo: nice strong Kenyan tea) on the hot plate.

Christmas was low-key here at Stately Poppins Manor, since I've still got a pinched nerve and a hacking cough I can't seem to get rid of. I spent most of the day reading and pondering how to change my life for the better in 2024.

BTW, Rufus will turn off all the telemetry it can in the install image. It can't turn it all off, there's a baseline that can't be disabled.

HP did a decent job with the Start Menu, on my Win 11 laptop. It has everything I need except Control Panel which functions are available under other entries. That Tom's HW article should have added details on how to add an item to the right-click context menu.
I don't use, and don't ever intend to use, OneDrive. Any negatives on uninstalling it? I see that it still runs even though I have it OFF on StartUp. Ccleaner still finds it to erase files.

There's probably a NumLock key that toggles between Numbers and Directional Keys. All the numeric keypads I've had so that. Sometimes the BIOS will let you choose if you want it to start up with numbers or otherwise.

Oven doesn't have that feature.

I suspect that the lowering from 450-350 after initial 20 minutes did not take effect, and that it remained at 450 for the duration.

And....nobody caught that it failed to do that.

I depend on my nose a lot when cooking a roast in the oven. While my oven does have a convection feature I don't trust it so never have used it even once. Most of the time I cut roasts down to one pound and sous vide for an hour or two, sealed in a bag. All the juices stay in the bag and the roast beef has no chance of drying out. I think I could probably get six one pound bags of roast in the sous vide. Or two three pound, or some combination.

I found it interesting that the TH article recommends using in MS AV which comes with W11.

I've been using AVG Free for decades without a hitch. But I use it minimally, as I'm savvy enough to detect the obvious.
