42 One day his father sent him to look for a lost foal. On his way he met a monk, a venerable elder, a stranger, a priest, with the appearance of an angel. This stranger was standing beneath an oak tree, praying devoutly and with much shedding of tears. The boy, seeing him, humbly made a low obeisance, and awaited the end of his prayers.

The venerable monk, when he had ended his prayers, glanced at the boy and, conscious that he beheld the chosen vessel of the Holy Spirit, he called him to his side, blessed him, bestowed on him a kiss in the name of Christ, and asked: "What art thou seeking, or what dost thou want, child?" The boy answered, "My soul desires above all things to understand the Holy Scriptures. I have to study reading and writing, and I am sorely vexed that I cannot learn these things. Will you, holy Father, pray to God for me, that he will give me understanding of book-learning?" The monk raised his hands and his eyes toward heaven, sighed, prayed to God, then said, "Amen."

46 [...] Taking out from his satchel, as if it were some treasure, with three fingers, he handed to the boy what appeared to be a little bit of white wheaten bread prosphora, saying to him: "Take this in thy mouth, child, and eat; this is given thee as a sign of God's grace and for the understanding of Holy Scriptures. Though the gift appears but small, the taste thereof is very sweet."

The Vision to the Youth Bartholomew is an oil-on-canvas painting created during 1889 and 1890 by the Russian artist Mikhail Nesterov. It is the first and best known work in his series on Sergius of Radonezh, a medieval Russian saint. The painting is considered "the inaugural work of the Russian Symbolist movement" and is in the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.[1]

The image of St. Sergius of Radonezh, who had been born Bartholomew, was near and dear to the artist since childhood and was the embodiment of the moral ideal for Nesterov. Nesterov gave St. Sergius a particularly important role in rallying the Russian people. The painting illustrates an episode from "The Life of St. Sergius" by Epiphanius the Wise:

59 I wasn't familiar with the story behind the painting, presumably his audience was. The colors are pleasant and alive without being garish and the landscape is the same. The boy in his white shirt does stand out from the rest of the scene and makes an interesting contrast with the dark figure of the holy man. I'm not being snide when I say the technique for the landscape reminds me of a Bob Ross painting, especially the grass in the foreground.

The artist is telling a story, or part of one, and his painting will definitely invite speculation by the viewer.

60 Young St. Bart has a length of rope over his right forearm. That might be the tail end of it trailing behind him.

My question is: What is the Hooded Stranger holding in his hands? Some kind of religious icon, or a peculiar Russian form of walkie-talkie?

There is also something rectangular fastened to the tree just behind the Stranger. A Wanted poster . . .?

As for the art, the work is amazing, with beautifully rendered trees and grass, the lake, and the little cottage. Now I see why all of you say "Russian" -- those spires atop the roof are very Orthodox-style.

158 Russia Beyond: 5 facts about Sergius of Radonezh, Russia's most venerated saint, History, March 09, 2023, by Alexandra Guzeva:

1. His real name is not Sergius, and he’s not from Radonezh, 2. 2. He founded Russia’s main monastery – The Holy Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius; 3. He created a new type of monasticism; 4. He formed the Russian spiritual ethos; 5. He united Rus’.

Interesting article. Beneath the first point, "Even those who are not knowledgeable about St. Sergius of Radonezh can immediately draw the conclusion that Mikhail Nesterov’s famous painting, Vision to the Youth Bartholomew, (1890), has something to do with the great saint. Bartholomew is his real name. He became Sergius after he was tonsured as a monk." And also, "By the way, because of his own problems with learning, St. Sergius is considered to be the patron of all students, especially those who struggle with their studies. People pray to him before the beginning of the new academic year and before important exams."

Not familiar with the artist but it's a nicely done painting linked to history so, yes, I'd hang. Thanks.

From a distance the card looks like a mountain with Bob Ross disembodied head floating above it. The words in Christmas red are easy to read... "Have a happy little Christmas, courtesy of Bob Ross and his little trees"..
However, upon closer inspection, that ain't no mountain! It's a male " nude" with the manly bits covered with ...... Happy little trees! And Bob's head is positioned as the head atop the body! Most awesome Christmas card ever!

CHRISTMAS MASSACRE IN NIGERIA:
The death toll is 140 and climbing after a series of coordinated attacks by Jihadist forces in Plateau.

They attacked 20 Christian communities in Central Nigeria, raiding and burning homes while civilians were asleep. 300 are injured and 221 homes are destroyed.

The authorities did not respond for over 12 hours, a source has told AP.

In the past 2 decades, 62,000 Christians in Nigeria have been killed by Jihadists and another 5 million have been displaced.

268 Well the annual sexual harassment training is now done. As always, it's a toxic mix of:
- Asking what you *think* while expecting the correct answer. This is designed to try to *make* you think what they want, and it's a tactic I always disliked.
- Asserting that "silence is agreement" and therefore acting as compelled speech, or designed to make you feel guilt for not toeing the line.
- A quiz riddled with syntactic ambiguity, increasing the odds of getting a wrong answer by forcing guessing.

Only one thing new for me in this one:
- A quiz where the answer is, on its own terms, directly wrong. Even the "hey, dummy, you got this wrong three times in a row so here's the breakdown on how to answer it correctly" explainer at the end did not lead to a correct combination in a multi-select quiz entry. Only answering incompletely (2/4 instead of the correct 3/4) got approval. Oh, and one of the four options *also* had the syntactic ambiguity problem, leading to a confounding error on top of it.

I wonder how much the courseware vendor got paid for this pile of trash.

Protesters displeased the the economic liberalization of the Chinese economy have taken to the streets in the city of Shaoshan in the Hunan province.

They want a more “Maoist economy”
And brought portraits of Mao with them.

Xi is pushing this way too.

If this is true, it is orchestrated by the local Party leaders at Xi's behest or per his wishes. Xi is much more Mao than Deng, and this kind of thing is surely very, very happy-making for Xi.

the Orthodox have their own canon of saints, the stories are formidable. I recently learned of St. Herman of Alaska. There is a church nearby dedicated to him. I went there for a concert of Russian singers. The sanctuary had such an aura of holiness.
