There's a name for some 80/20 rule that I have now forgotten but in the end it will apply to AI - it will be 80% bullshit, 20% some limited value. Oh, wait. Punching in 80/20 rule in DDG nets 'Pareto principle' which doesn't really apply. But it's kinda similar. Maybe. Posted by: Divide by Zero at December 25, 2023 04:37 AM (enJYY) 16

Weak AI refers to systems designed for very specific tasks. Strong AI, on the other hand, can complete a variety of tasks, many times faster than the vast majority of humans. Strong AI = equals giving a six pack of beer and the keys to your car to a teenager and expecting good things to happen Posted by: Divide by Zero at December 25, 2023 04:50 AM (enJYY) 18

My guess as to the first prediction of AI doom was in the movie 'Dr. Strangelove' (1964) which had the Soviets having established a 'Doomsday Machine' which would automatically trigger massive retaliation and WWIII if they were attacked. 'Dr Strangelove' was loosely based on the novel 'Red Alert' where: In a last effort to avert a Soviet–American nuclear war, the U.S. President offers the Soviet Premier the compensatory right to destroy Atlantic City, New Jersey; at the final moment, the Alabama Angel is shot down, and nuclear catastrophe is averted. 8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” Posted by: rhennigantx at December 25, 2023 06:14 AM (lwOKI) 46

I had an idea a long while ago, when neutral networks and machine intelligence were still outre concepts and not the subject of four minute YouTube videos.... use it in biology to study metabolic pathways. Encode every chemical reaction possible with some kind of unambiguous system, like a Gödel Numbering for atoms. Plug in a training set of the tens or hundreds of thousands of known metabolic processes that occur in some given benchmark organism (maybe fruit flies?). Then let the electrons rip, see what it spits out as plausible other reactions and feedbacks we don't know of yet, and then get in the lab and go looking to see if they are real or not.

I grew up doing the seven fishes every Christmas eve. We usually had fried smelts, shrimps, crab cakes, an anchovy- based pasta dish, baked fish and potatoes (cod and haddock), and one mystery fish that would rotate year to year.
In later years, we decided it was an overly expensive pain in the ass, our family has rapidly dwindled in number, and half of us who are left don't even like fish, so now we do the However Many Fishes We Feel Like. Posted by: Warai-otoko at December 25, 2023 06:54 AM (9UlRk) 84

Intersectional Everythingism. Never ask "what does X have to do with Y", dear Comrade. X has everything to do with Y if the Revolution demands it, and you'd better not question it. Posted by: Warai-otoko at December 25, 2023 07:08 AM (9UlRk) 110
We had a very small group yesterday evening and most of our regular scripture readers were out because they went to the morning service . So I was grateful that my former running mate came to our service ( she normally goes someplace else farther away) read some scripture and my son did for the first time as well. I don't think he likes getting up in front of people but he was more than willing to that. He's a helpful young man.

I had the equivalent of advance placement English all through high school and had to read 'Green Mansions' in I think about 9th grade. I just looked it up on Wiki and I don't remember a single thing about that story. It's filled with pseudo religious mumbo jumbo. But the story did somewhat inspire me to live in a forested location. I just wish the trees weren't going through all these diseases right now. One of my neighbors lost double digit number of trees last year. You're in PA, right? I know my parent's land here has lost a majority of its trees over the last decade or so, between storms and diseases. We're replanting as hard a we can. I transplant volunteer saplings from my place to their place, and i always get the pack of "free" saplings from the arbor day foundation and pot them up to take down there. Casar backed a vote to defund Austin Police as a city council member and it led to a police shortage as well as a wave of officers retiring from the force.
‘We did it!!’, he wrote in a post on X in August 2020. ‘Austin City Council just reduced APD's budget by over $100 million *and* reinvested resources into our community's safety and well-being.’ That's a lot of money. I wonder what really happened to it? Posted by: Bruce at December 25, 2023 07:31 AM (hehOQ) 138

There is a article posted at Rand Simberg's blog "terrestrial Musings" that talks about a study done in S. Korea on the reported health problems from the Fake Vax.
I am trying to figure this statement out: "‘All Covid-19 vaccines were identified as significant risk factors for each inflammatory musculoskeletal disorder, except for mixing and matching vaccines for De Quervain tenosynovitis. My house was on a gravel road - a developer bought the adjacent property - a rundown english walnut orchard. Which meant I lost 15 feet deep by 150 yards of easement to street/curb. Long story. Which left my huge Catalpa tree on the T of the new paved road. Liability and danger. I argued it was contractor responsibility to remove it. Long story. A friend happens to be a city code enforcement officer. We argued about the same thing. Four months later I come home from work and it's gone.
