I can pick out a few of the Latin words engraved on the stone, "Augur" for instance, and I suppose "dabit" is some conjugation of the verb "to give." "Pompei Fulvis" I suspect is the augur's name. Beyond that, I got nothin'.

What a beautiful painting and such an outstanding example of the style. It shows all the wonder of the simple shepherds while the procession in the middle ground is approaching. Perhaps that symbolizes the eventual growth of Christianity? I like the contrast of the rough elements of the stable with the stately columns holding up the roof. So many allusions and other factors for the viewer to enjoy. It's interesting how the artist starts with the muted colors of the shepherds and their clothing then brings in more and brighter colors a the procession nears. Then the romantic landscape in the background which, if nothing else, makes for a lovely image and is typical for that style.
Merry Christmas to all. Posted by: JTB at December 25, 2023 10:02 AM (7EjX1) 82

I gave myself a new vintage pipe, a Fader's brand sandblast apple (possibly made by English maker GBD), and some Amphora Full Aroma tobacco. The combo made for a great smoke after breakfast today. With passing years I appreciate more deeply that the true meaning of Christmas Day is not as much about the Jesus in the manger as it is about heralding the Jesus on the Cross and the Atonement.

I'm sorry, but this one just doesn't grab me. Just seems uber-commercial, as though the artist was pandering to his patrons. If it had been painted in 1985, the shepherds would all sport Rolexes, and Mary would be drinking a coke.

The classical sarcophagus in the picture is not just a manger for the ox and ass. It also has an iconographical significance indicated by the Latin inscription along its front: Ense cadens. Solymo. Pompei Pului[us] Augur Numen. Ait. Quae me conteg[it] Urna Dabit. [While Fulvi(us), augur of Pompey, was falling by the sword in Jerusalem he said: the urn that covers (conceals) me shall bring forth a god]. This is an ancient prophecy by Fulvius. The animals' manger will serve as a crib for the Christ Child. In his Adoration of the Shepherds, Ghirlandaio combines this reference to the Roman classical age with knowledge of Flemish art and turns them into an integrated whole. https://www.wga.hu/html_m/g/ghirland/domenico/ 5sassett/shepherd/shepher.html Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) at December 25, 2023 10:34 AM (xG4kz) Posted by: dantesed at December 25, 2023 10:35 AM (88xKn) 155

In 1487 Ghirlandaio's workshop welcomed a twelve-year-old apprentice, Michelangelo Buonarroti. Although he only stayed a year (before being transferred to Lorenzo de' Medici's prestigious painting academy), and while Michelangelo (never one to play down his own genius) claimed always to be entirely self-taught, Ghirlandaio's style and technique appear prominently in the early work of Michelangelo, specifically in his use of cross-hatch shading (a subtly shading technique that brings the illusion of depth to the painting). https://www.theartstory.org/artist/ghirlandaio/ Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) at December 25, 2023 10:39 AM (xG4kz) 162
