1 Merry Countdown to Christmas, Pixy …

Thanks for the gnus.

Sadly, the banks no longer have the trust of their clients, given the past few years of shenanigans. So money in the mattress or backyard may come back in style.

3 I've never had a problem with fractional reserve banking. It's just a way to increase liquidity and leverage the time value of money. Everything you do with money is inherently risky, including converting it to gold and putting it in a vault. It's just sitting there losing value as people mine more gold while the "talent" you have remains uninvested.

Most gripes about it stem from irresponsibility, fraud, manipulation, etc etc, all of which is external to the thing itself. Those are just bad things no matter who does it or what they do it with.

Like the universal lament about "capitalism", what they really lament is somebody other than themselves pulling off a grift that they are too naive or too timid to manage.

4 Using public money to backstop private risk, though, is its own can of worms.

20 Maybe abolish retail banking altogether, and explicitly call it a money market account?

If the bank can't invest your deposits, they have no motivation to hold your money for you, meaning every savings or checking account would carry fees that no one would be willing to pay.

I don't know. Far better people than me have grappled with this topic.

Posted by: Bruce at December 23, 2023 04:46 AM (vd8XM)

I'd be happy with an either/ or solution. Some banks can invest your deposits, but then they may not charge you any other kind of fee or charge. Others can't invest it, but then they can charge you whatever they advertise as a fee for the service of holding on to your wealth for you.

I guess whether you like it or not, there's really no such think as "banking" as some magical thing distinct from any other financial transaction. It's just a polite fiction we use to help us sleep.

29 Update on Journeys of my large shipment through USPS, literally.

After 4 days of the package I sent out coming up as still in the post office I mailed it from, it updated with a new location, Tacoma, Washington.

Great, ummm except I live in NJ and the package was basically going 3 hours away in PA.

It's not like this is a little package either, that can easily get misplaced, it's over 2 feet long by a foot and a half wide, and weighs about 15 pounds.

It honestly would have been faster and cheaper to hand deliver the item myself, but then I'd have to go to PA *shudder*

33 It doesn't bother me if a chip targeting the embedded market doesn't have an excess of PCIe lanes available in an already fairly loaded implementation. I'm scratching my head and trying to think of what use that single x1 slot would be in a NAS. Does the CPU lack the full Intel codec playback and transcoding package?

If I was building for compactness, I think I'd like to give up a couple of network ports along with a couple of SATA ports to get at least one more M.2 slot. If I need a lot of slower storage capacity, a full size 3.5" hard drive can live on one of those USB ports. For the money, it gets you a really big hunk of storage and keeps the heat generated away from the mainboard. Good as backup for all the internal drives that you can grab and run with in an emergency. Since those internal M.2 drives are going to be constrained by the much slower(!) network ports, I'd happily use PCIe 3.0 devices if higher capacity was in the trade-off. That is, if there are 8TB sticks to be had significantly cheaper on the slower bus tech.

34 My only issue with banks using your money, to lend to others, is who is making the money.

They'll lend your money to someone at 5%, and you'll be getting a .05% APR on that money.

Even when you put your money "on the street" with local mobsters you make a much larger percentage, and you can get some exercise by beating the deadbeat who owes you that money, with their own leg.

As the facilitator the bank should get a small slice as a fee for using my property, not the opposite way around.

The argument, I'd suppose, is that they're taking all of the risk, and your deposit is guaranteed, so they should make all of the profit. Your "cut" of the transaction is that they provide somewhere safe and stable to store your wealth.

Except they're no longer the ones backstopping the guarantee... you are.

Keep in mind, they're doing all the work in finding places to apply the money. This used to mean careful scrutiny of the applicants even after 2008 inflicted some reality on the depositors, it still means a lot more labor than a typical Joe Six-pack type can possibly hope to match. There is also the not trivial matter of how little your individual lump of capital can achieve compared to the bank's ability to aggregate it with many others.

Even if you're fairly well off, trying to do this on your own is little better than going to Vegas and playing the slots. Or the stock market if you haven't the time to research your picks in detail. It all comes down to convenience and scale.

Posted by: Epobirs at December 23, 2023 05:15 AM (/0z9K)

46 I think a bank that made a real effort to be absurdly transparent to its customers would be an interesting marketing trick.

"Here are all the insanely complicated machinations we have to go through just to make sure that we can give you back the thousand bucks you gave us any time you ask for it, along with a bit of interest every month, and paying all of our workers, and keeping the lights on at all our branches, and keeping fifty thousand ATMs more or less functioning, and....."

Most of that info is already in public filings, probably, i don't know. Then again, maybe we don't really want to see the feet madly paddling below the waterline as the duck calmly glides along.

My haircut/beard trim is today, and my usual Christmas routine is to bring a little cash in envelopes for my barber and his business partner. They're the owners, and so tipping them is not good etiquette; but a little gift at Christmas is something else. I'm thinking $40 each is about right.

62 Miss Linda has still not told me what she wants for Christmas, and today is the deadline. I'm not going to any malls tomorrow, and I don't want to go today. Yeah, I know, jewelry is always appropriate, and I have good taste -- but mine is not the same as hers, and I almost always get it wrong. So I say, "Here's the store. Point to what you want."

As for me, I have a new-to-me pipe I'm waiting to load and smoke on Monday, with a new tobacco blend I haven't tried. Plus I bought some water spot remover gel to try on the roof of the Buick. The car looks great at a few feet away, but if you get close and the light hits the roof right, it looks smudged. If I can get some of the water spots reduced, then hit the car with polish and hand wax, it will look even better.

63 It's counter to what i usually hear people say, but I've sworn off small banks. BoA and Chase have been awesome to me for years now, and the local banks i used to deal with were absolutely incompetent. It's like they were doing everything on paper. In the dark. With their feet.

The bigger banks rarely if ever screw up, and when they do, they fix it immediately.

Morning, Fen,

Well, I've been going to the guy, except for my time, in Denver, since 1979. A few years back he mentioned that his winter rain hat had worn out after nn years, and he couldn't find a new one in any stores. He's not an online guy. So I hopped on the 'Net, had a new model shipped to me, and presented it to him at Xmas.

98 from the LOC (Library of Congress):

On October 4, 1943, Crosby recorded "I'll Be Home for Christmas" with the John Scott Trotter Orchestra for Decca Records. ... It touched a tender place in the hearts of Americans, both soldiers and civilians, who were then in the depths of World War II. ... In December 1965, having completed the first U.S. space rendezvous and set a record for the longest flight in the U.S. space program, the astronauts Frank Borman and James Lovell hurtled back to earth aboard their Gemini 7 spacecraft. Asked by NASA communication personnel if they wanted any particular music piped up to them, the crew requested Bing Crosby's recording of "I'll Be Home for Christmas."

I sometimes put the leg meat from snow crab in between two thin flounder fillets then melt some cheese on top.So good.

It's the closest thing to 'jersey summers where we would catch blue crab and flounder and roll the crab up inside the flounder fillet. Nothing like sitting around in the late afternoon with a beer and cleaning a bucket of crabs.

I think the only issue is when they run out or about ready to run out of fuel you might get incomplete combustion which produces CO. I have three of them in my house and I would never sleep with one running but during the day (if I have one or more running) I do keep an eye on them. They're great for the purpose of taking the chill out of area quickly.

When my factory needed a heater overhaul in the middle of winter I used one single 100,000 btu kero unit to keep 10,000 square feet comfortable. They make a little bit of noise, maybe 60 db.

I know sometimes if you're connection isn't running smoothly it'll switch to a lower setting to make sure it can stream properly without constantly buffering. Whenever it happens to me if I just back track a second it tends to fix itself.
