  • Benchmark results have leaked for AMD's upcoming 8700G CPU. (WCCFTech)

This is the desktop version of the chip currently used in a range of laptop parts like the 7840U, 7940HS, and the Z1 Extreme found in the Asus ROG Ally mobile gaming device.

Juggling some benchmark numbers it looks like this will be 6% slower than the existing Ryzen 7700 - both being 8 core parts - but much faster for integrated graphics, the 8700G having 12 graphics cores against just 2 on the 7700.

Like the 7700 it's a 65W model; there will also be a 35W version, though it's likely you'll be able to manually configure the power consumption up and down just like existing Ryzen 7000 desktop chips.

  • Trust no-one. (SEC Consult)

Did that email really come from Amazon.co.jp? I mean, yes, in this particular case it did, because they were notifying my that my package had arrived and indeed it was sitting right there at my door.

But they are also one of a vast number of domains that appear to be vulnerable to the latest email address spoofing attack.

SMTP - the protocol that has been used to deliver email for more than forty years - is a very simple text-based standard. The problem here is that text is itself not simple. SMTP processes one line of text at a time, but there is no universally accepted way to mark the end of a line of text, and most mail servers accept what are technically invalid lines of text in order to work with broken mail applications.

This new hack exploits that to insert SMTP commands in the middle of an email, in such a way that they are processed as commands instead of just being part of the email body.

    Very sneaky.

Time for everyone to switch to JMAP.

  • Midjourney has released version 6 of their AI image generation engine. (Venture Beat)

Last time I played with it, they had just announced version 3.

  • Intel is making a lot of noise about the AI hardware on its new Meteor Lake laptop chips, because other than that they kind of suck. (Tom's Hardware)

And in two out of four of Intel's carefully selected benchmarks, the AI hardware does indeed produce worthwhile speed improvements.

On the other two... AMD wins by a significant margin just using the regular CPU cores. And that's comparing an 8 core AMD chip to a 16 core Intel model.

    Oops.

  • Should California ban paraquat? (LA Times) (archive site)

I don't know. Maybe. The link to Parkinson's disease is unproven, but the stuff is toxic as hell, and is presently only made by a single company owned by the CCP.

On the other hand it kills weeds real good and breaks down in the soil so it doesn't accumulate.

Anyway, paraquat sounds like the name of an exotic herbal liqueur only produced in the Canary Islands with the unique property that mixed drinks made from it retain the original 160 proof, no matter what you mix it with.

Disclaimer: The entire Atlantic Ocean turned into a salty cocktail today after a bartender in Spain spilled a bottle of Paraquat. Tourists are warned to stay away from coastal areas until the fish "sober up".

6 My LaCrosse clock/weather station has updated correctly without my interference. It was 70 seconds fast. I manually adjusted it. Within a day or two it was 2 minutes fast. Today I go look and it's got the same exact time as all the computers, IP phone, cellphones, etc. Go figure. I think it had to be a Boulder, CO problem. Maybe a side-effect of a fixed Governor's election and too many illegals?

9 Hm. Tried to print out a pdf manual of the kitchen stove on the state-of-the-art Kyocera at the office, and it won't print more than the first 5 pages. I tried another pdf and that printed completely, so it's the document. Why would the actual manufacturer's website provide a PDF manual that's encrypted or limited?!
Bogus.

13 IIRC, Paraquat was used during the Carter Administration by the DEA to spray pot fields in Mexico. There was a radio announcer at an LA station (KMET - The Might Met) by the name of "Paraquat" Kelly that would tell people on the air during the news where to take their stuff to be tested.

He and the station were frequently visited by the LAPD and DEA ...

Tried that, didn't work. It won't print past page 5. Just to check I looked over the properties, and however it's configured either the document itself is limited or the Kyocera printer is sensing some copyright issue.
I'll take it home and try it there, I bet it'll print in full. I don't feel like fooling around with it all that much, it's just a 20 page user's manual and a hard copy would be handy to have.

15 Bought a bunch of scratch off lottery tickets for Christmas presents. I'll guarantee no one will get rich, but they all set around scratching away after the presents are opened. Most lottery tickets only return about 50 percent, the politicians keep the rest. A good black jack player can get nearly 98 percent, but LV isn't built on winners.

35 But what happens if somebody wins big? I’m just joking around, but just think of it. What if someone gave someone a gift lottery ticket and they won millions?

You were right about gambling for sure. I have a theory that I certainly did not but I’ve stated for many many years. Most gambling games are based on how difficult it is to play. The more challenging the game or the more unwelcoming it is the better chances you have.

Of course, the lottery has the worst odds in the lowest payoff. There’s nothing and no one contesting that. After that, the second worst odds are slot machines. They are the most welcoming in the easiest place of the offer the worst odds.

The best odds are with baccarat, which is truly just dumb luck. At that game, you’re closest to 50-50, but it’s less than 50. Craps can be close to 50-50 depending on your bet and the roll, in certain situations you can get close to 50-50. In blackjack of person using perfect basic strategy can get close to 50-50 and a card counter who is an expert can get over 50%.

But that doesn’t mean the player can make a living off it. He hast to be legit expert, he hast to be playing in perfect conditions with perfect house

39 Rules, and even then he hast to have an enormous bankroll to offset variance. The reality is the casinos make money off card counters because even when they’re counting, they’re almost always getting the bad end of it. Like you said, there’s a reason all those buildings are in Las Vegas.

Look at sports betting, even a cursory look at how that works shows it’s almost impossible nay, it is impossible to win in the long run. The only way to make money in sports betting is to convince someone else you know something and then sell them your knowledge. If these guys could actually win, they wouldn’t waste their time selling their expertise.

Posted by: SFGoth at December 22, 2023 04:48 AM (KAi1n)

43 A thought I have had for years about the overwhelming prevalence of all kinds of gambling in all 'primitive' cultures is that it works as a form of 'wealth redistribution', and keeps the haves and have-nots in a rough kind of equilibrium.
Every lower-class gambler (and I know a LOT) seems to have an obsession with 'fairness' about it, that makes me think it's not actually about the winning at all.
The problem gamblers are clearly risk-takers and love the highs and lows, like druggies, but most handle-pullers and ticket scratchers seem to regard it as a form of at least potential distribution. Tribal cultures all gamble like fiends and it really doesn't even seem to really be about the winnings, really.

47 Microsoft Word and excel allows you to save/convert word and excel files I to pdf. Usually as far as a reader, the default is Microsoft edge (the browser.)

Editing is a whole separate deal. The point of a pdf is to create essentially a document that can't be edited. There are programs out there that allow you to add notes or whatever, but it is like highlighting or marking up a jpg.

No. There is not, as far as I know. I despise Adobe and want them all burning in the eternal fires of Hell but so far I have not found a free program that works well. 56 43) we all know that the poorest among us are the biggest lottery players. The state knows that as well.

Sure that is the idea that at least you have a chance. But any type of formal gambling has been calcified for so long. No one‘s going to come up with the way to beat it. if your idea is to make money or make a living and you walk into a casino as a guest or you make a sports bet you’ve already lost you really miscalculated because to be honest they’re actually upfront about it and the numbers are there for anyone to see.

The most simple example is roulette. You can bet on any number but every player loses on zero or double 00. That is the house’s advantage writ large. They are showing you that they will not pay you back for the odds you are bucking.

67 59) i’m not sure why I do it. Even just today I decided to dump French and work on my Spanish because of job prospects. All the time I spent on French was probably wasted because at least in the part of the country I live in there’s no use for it. The weird reality very few people mention is the French don’t immigrate here and the few here that do speak French also speak English so becoming fluent in the language doesn’t actually add to your worth or ability to communicate with other you normally would not be able to.

As for languages in general, I’ve always loved travel, and things that are exotic. I always like the idea of being able to converse with people that others of my type could not.

But I realize now that, for every decision there is a cost. We could always improve our own English, you could study English your entire life, and still there would be more to learn. Is becoming the equivalent of a fifth grader in Spanish worth reducing your own native language ability? Everyone has to make their own decision, and I doubt many have even thought about that.

The supermarket has two machines, one in my usual department, right next to an ATM. If you're outraged by watching poor people piss away their money you'd have an aneurysm within minutes. They angrily throw their losers into the nearby trash can, where when the Honduran cleaning crew arrives, they fish them all out and recheck them all for possible overlooked winners. Then the Hondurans rip up all the tickets so if THEY missed anything nobody else can have it.

84 To be clear, and to be on the record, as if anyone cares, and for SF Goth, I prefer French to Spanish. It is a better language, and there’s a reason people from all over the world from China to Argentina study it. There’s a reason the Russians, for bid their own language in the high courts and the leaders of that nation only spoke French. There’s a reason for the term lingua franca. There is a reason our founding fathers, the men we adore, and look up to studied French.

Of course, English is the greatest language we are the luckiest people on earth that that is our native language and everyone knows they have to learn it to make it in world. And I have positive associations with Spanish. I am really into Spain a place I’ve been and I kind of like the idea of Mexico not the Mexico that exists but the one in dreams from 100 years ago on the southern border, think of Cormac McCarthy.

But I would choose French any day over Spanish, or any other language, although I would love to study Italian as well. Spanish is better because the reality in real life in this country you will encounter 50 people or Spanish would help for everyone where French would help.

You can badmouth French

87 Any day, but it wouldn’t change the reality on the ground. French is the most studied second language in the world. More countries in the world have franchise in official language than Spanish. The second most used language on the Internet is French and always has been.

But for Americans, we are slowly becoming a Spanish-speaking country I see that and I admit that. I can be pissed, or I could realize learning this language can actually benefit me. I’ve studied French every day for years, but I probably encounter French speaker once every six months.

But SF Goth don’t mistake that from the entire world reality. I think it was Forbes that said recently that French would be the most spoken language on earth with well over 500 mill speakers, because of the growth in Africa.

It was originally typewritten, scanned in, and posted as PDFs, all in a kind of regional Austrian/German dialect, where I grabbed it. Trying to get all the text off those documents without having to manually transcribe it (UUUUGH!).
I gave it to The Kid, and she managed to get most of it off somehow but I don't recall exactly how she did it. Translation has proven to be a problem as the Banat Ethnic Germans had a specific dialect that has mostly now disappeared in any spoken form, except in one rural area in Brazil.

I loved using it in the late 1990's for formatting OPRS. It was a high stress situation where we had to create documents summarizing the results of multiple licensing and operating documents, sometimes in 12 hours or less. I did the first draft, then everyone tried to tear it apart and improve it.

Being able to see the formatting codes made revisions easier and didn't distract from getting the technical details exactly right, and getting them approved by a bunch of very senior people.

Typographical and formatting errors would cause them to doubt my technical competence.

After losing 10 bucks in 3 minutes, I left my wife at her machine and went in search of a beer. I returned about 20 minutes later to see my wife had won a few bucks. She asked me how I had done. I told her I found a place where every time you put down 4 dollars, you win a beer.

I do. Of course my hobby is fiction writing, and a good part of my daytime work involves writing (mostly emails, true, but also reports and the like). And I'd like to land some gigs as a proofreader and editor once I retire. With all of that, improving my English is important.

A (very annoying) member of my former real-life writing group insisted that the verb "to repair," as in "I repaired to the kitchen to put together a snack," meant "to return." I looked it up to be sure. It means "to go to a specific place for a specific purpose"; check. "To return" is an obsolete meaning. But I did look it up to confirm my immediate knowledge.

There was an interesting story from Pennsylvania many moons ago. Some woman won scratch off big jack pot including millions multiple times which raised some flags. What she had determined was that the lottery commission 'salted' winners around in different counties in the state. By determining somehow what counties had already had big jackpot winners she traveled to counties which had not and bought a slew of tickets. I guess she kept receipts of loses and 'wrote off' those loses against her winnings - which is entirely legal.

You know, I was actually up last night at 9:30, which was the winter solstice moment in local time. Didn't notice it.

It's always amazed me that the ancients knew about and planned around the solstices and equinoxes. The change to longer days is not a tremendously obvious thing -- not like our DST change. It's a matter of a a minute or two each day and it takes a few days to notice that each day is getting longer.

Just proves that they were very much in touch with their environment. People who say "Aliens must have helped us" (to build the pyramids, etc.) don't take into account that humans pay close attention to their world and are capable of drawing conclusions from the data and building on that data.

165 Yeah, if you ever win big, you have to show your lottery losses or gambling losses and you can offset the win for tax purposes.

People often forget offsetting expenses to their detriment. Most DoorDash drivers don’t understand that they can write off every mile they drive for $.66. If you’re not paid salary by an employer, the chances are, there are many expenses you can write off to reduce your income.

With the tree, and Dash The Russian Blue who lurved to climb it, the solution was a heavy thrift-store round lift-type weight at the base, an eye-bolt into the ceiling, and a cable (you can use a rope) connecting the two and the tree wired to it. That will keep the little shits from tipping it over. The ornaments might take some wire twist-ties instead of hooks.

184 Say a door dash driver drives ten thousand miles in a year doing deliveries. And trust me, that is a tiny amount. Full time drivers do more like 30,000 miles a year. For ten thousand miles you can deduct $6,600 dollars off you net income. For people who barely make $10 an hour that is a lot of money, but less than 20% of people who do that job actually do that with their taxes. Not sure how this became a tax seminar and I am surely not a tax expert but as much as we bitch, there are so many areas where we can legally reduce taxation, and we simply ignore it. Yes, in my case, since SS is only half taxable, my pension is small-ish, and the standard deduction is pretty big, I expect I'd have to have a pretty large mortgage for that to work for me. I'll check into it when the time comes. But I want to keep my note reasonably low.

I met with the pension guy yesterday, and he was impressed that I seemed so prepared for retirement, and had a goodly chunk of savings as well. (He also told me that I resembled Vincent van Gogh, especially my hair color. I was tempted, as we do here, to make the ear joke and go, "What? What'd you say?" He's not the first person to tell me that, either.)

228 Last year, since I hadn't told SS to withhold anything, I wound up having to send the Feds about $1800. This year, I told them to take out 10% -- and I expect something like a $1000 refund in '24. Maybe I should have canceled withholding in August or September.

My rough calc using the IRS's own SS worksheet and my estimate of future SS and pension amounts suggests that once I retire, my Fed tax liability will be very low -- like, owing $50 or something. SS is not taxable by the states I'm considering, and while they have state income tax and I'll have property tax, the low Fed liability will offset some of that. As, I hope, will a lower car insurance payment!

Delta 8, Delta 9 and Delta Naught *should* be a controlled substances but Delta 8 can be easily made from some simple chemistry - a mild acid if I recall correctly. Being a total idiot when it comes to chemistry I'm not sure if hydrogen peroxide qualifies in that regard.

They used paraquat to induce Parkinsons in mice. IDK -- it may only induce Parkinson 's-like symptoms in mice, and only when you inject an amount relative to body weight to which a human will likely never be exposed. FWIW, a very young lab tech accidentally injected herself, didn't tell anyone, and never took the antidote. And as of ten years post-exposure, nothing happened. 292 We once inherited a pet hairless male rat. His testicles were a quarter of his body weight.

I'm not kidding at all, and my deepest sympathies if this happened, but did she die?

She moved somewhere that the rat was unwelcome.

Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the three hundred.

301 And those AI tasks that Meteor Lake wins against Phoenix at? The whole reason AND released Hawk point (the 8040 parts) is their AI engine is something like 40% faster.

Those tasks where the AI engine let's Intel pull off a 10-20% win, Hawkpoint is goo C to beat it with a baseball bat.

And then there's Strix.

I'm already hearing people calling this Intel's Bulldozer moment.
