Luke Chapter 2

1) And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

2) (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

3) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

4) And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David

5) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

6) And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

7) And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9) And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10) And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11) For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

12) And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

13) And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14) Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

15) And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

16) And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

17) And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

1 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

19)But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

20) And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

Llama therapy at Portland airport eases holiday travel stress

Llama therapy at Portland airport eases holiday travel stress

PORTLAND, Ore. (WSVN) — Navigating airports during the holidays can be chaotic, but if you’re passing through Portland, expect a unique stress-busting surprise in the form of therapy llamas.

Meet Prince and Benny, two 400-pound fluffballs serving as therapy animals stationed at Portland International Airport earlier this week. Travelers, in need of a calming moment, found solace in these gentle llamas.

“It’s the most fun to see everyone’s reactions because you go from stress and concentrated trying to get to your gate on time to looking up and just seeing these 400-pound fluffs walking right by you,” shared Shannon Joy with Mountain Peaks Therapy Llamas & Alpacas.

Not stopping at llamas, the airport is also employing therapy dogs, ensuring that passengers experience a moment of joy and relaxation amid the holiday rush.

1.
Behold, a seely tender babe
In freezing winter night
In homely manger trembling lies,—
Alas, a piteous sight!
The inns are full, no man will yield
This little pilgrim bed,
But forced he is with seely beasts
In crib to shroud his head.

Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at December 24, 2023 10:04 PM (xKA9X)

17
2.
Despise him not for lying there,
First, what he is enquire,
An orient pearl is often found
In depth of dirty mire.
Weigh not his crib, his wooden dish,
Nor beasts that by him feed;
Weigh not his mother's poor attire
Nor Joseph's simple weed.
This stable is a prince's court,
This crib his chair of state,
The beasts are parcel of his pomp,
The wooden dish his plate.
The persons in that poor attire
His royal liveries wear;
The prince himself is come from heaven—
This pomp is prizèd there.
With joy approach, O Christian wight,
Do homage to thy king;
And highly prize his humble pomp
Which he from heaven doth bring.

28 I just watched an episode of the new "All Creatures Great and Small". It was pleasant enough but completely lacks the humor of the books, and a lot of the dialog seems too modern. I also note they managed to cram in some diversity.

79 Merry Christmas, all! The rain has slackened, and so I'm still on the hook to drive Miss Linda to 11 p.m. Mass. The church is beautiful, as I wrote earlier, and the service is always wonderful. But driving and splashing through puddles, and staying up until nearly one a.m., will not be fun.

I miss the excitement and anticipation of Christmas Eve when I was small. Maybe we all do. Well, next year by this time I plan to be in my house -- or at least away from this dump -- and will do different things, or the same things differently. (Not sure that makes sense.) Something to look forward to, anyway.

Toyota's are some of the most reliable vehicles.

My wife has driven Honda's since the 80s.

My first two cars were Chevy's, then it was various Japanese rice rockets from the late 80's to the mid 90's.

Then I got a GMC Sonoma in 95 that I proceeded to drive for the next 23 years, until it gave up the ghost in 2018.

Along the way I've had two Honda Fits, two Hyundai Tucsons, a Wrangler, a Colorado, now a 4Runner.

Basically, instead of getting one super expensive car, I get bunches of lower cost vehicles so I can tinker with them.

157 When we got our Lark Regal Wagonaire in 1990, it had halfway-decent radials, a profile lower than the stock bias-ply tires had been -- because that's what everybody did with 60's cars, "improve the handling." There was a lot to like about the car, but it did kind of wallow a little, being short for a wagon and heavy-ish (just under 4000 pounds). OK, so, that's how things were going to be.

After a year or two, I just happened to be visiting a small, one-man-owned tire shop in my business turf, and I saw a set of aggressive snow-treads way up on the top rack. Thinking back, I can't believe I recognized the size and profile from that distance, because they were way up there. I asked, and, sure as hell, they were the right original size. Recaps, they were, and the fella was stuck with 'em, because nobody wanted bias-ply anything. $25 for the set, and a few bucks for mounting. All of a sudden, my 1963 Studebaker was sitting up straight and dignified, with several inches more ground clearance and looking like a pretty competent off-roader. And the cornering! Shocks and springs and suspension had all been set up to go with these tall, stiff tires, and the car loved it.

My dad drove a GMC deuce from LeHavre to Metz, over the course of six months. The standard bean can in the ration package fit exactly between the exhaust manifold pipes. GI's used to argue over whether the can was made to fit the deuce, or the manifold to hold the bean can.

167 A little force fed high compression 4 banger is just not going to last as long. The parts are more stressed, the systems more complex, and there are more things to break. If longevity is your goal it's not the right choice. If you are leasing the vehicle and are going dump it before 100k, then fine. Just don't be the guy that buys it with 100k it.

Before we bought our truck and camper I did a lot of research regarding tow capacity and Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings. On-line you can find the J2807 tow chart for your vehicle's configuration. You need to know which rear end (3.21 or 3.55) your truck has. If you contact Ram they'll send you the build sheet which has that info.

People in the know tell me to derate the towing capacity by 70% to assure you have enough power for hills, etc.

You need to know the trailer's tongue weight - which is how much weight the trailer exerts on the truck. Add to that your cargo weight including passengers, luggage, pets and fluids and don't go over the vehicle's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating - which is all the above plus weight of vehicle.

Some people say go to a truck scale and get everything weighed so you know where you are for sure.

Good Luck and maybe we'll see each other on the road sometime.....

it looked like a V at the hitch.

You can buy a weight equalizer. I can't explain the
geometry but it will throw the weight back to the trailer
and level the two vehicles.

And trailer brakes, they come in handy.
Posted by: Braenyard wishing everyone a Merry Christmas at December 25, 2023 12:34 AM (wmN8H)

I don't get the weight distributing hitch mechanics either but it seems to work. I searched until I found a truck with a full tow package - trailer brake controller, Cl IV hitch, higher-ratio 3.92 rear end. But even with all my research I still kinda blew it. We bought a (used - 30K miles) Ram Limited with all the options - which reduced the cargo capacity by a few hundred pounds. I'm hoping by shifting weight around in the trailer I can keep the tongue weight on the lower end of the range.

It happens to everybody. Practice runs to the State Park or the like for the weekend or just overnight will help iron out a lot of the kinks and make the longer trips more pleasant.

If the trailer doesn't like the way the weight is distributed it will whip on you. But your idea is functional and used.

Yeah, I was referring to the original series.
We have been binge watching it, and the theme music is all over the place, with the horns, and piano music. Worse than the piano in the Mannix theme.

261 One more thing, an extra leaf spring. A good mechanic or a good trailer place can cut and install them for a reasonable price.
It won't affect your day to day ride much. Actually, with the extra bells and whistles weight that extra spring might be the ticket anyway.

One of the first things I did with my 150.

Posted by: Braenyard wishing everyone a Merry Christmas at December 25, 2023 01:02 AM (wmN8H)

262 In the 1970s multi track recording was really in its infancy. Digital was still 35 years away. Everything was analog and even if you wanted to cut 2 seconds out of a master you had to literally cut it with a razor on a diagonal plane (less noise) with a built in trimming device on the reel to reel.
Then there was "wow and flutter" and I think that the first production of Newhart had plenty of that.
It was clunky and wonderful.
Goodnight!

You are talking about an "equalizer hitch". I have never had the need to use one, but have seen them used. They use a pair of spring steel bars, with chains, to apply a counter-force to the tongue load of the trailer. Tried and true technology, and any good hitch shop can set you up with it.

Some good stuff on there. I first heard that from James Lileks podcast and heard about the competition between Firestone and Goodyear to who had the best Christmas album.

1965. Just a completely different world.

333 Merry Christmas, Horde. May the gifts of love, peace and happiness be yours.

Posted by: olddog in mo at December 25, 2023 02:38 AM (ju2Fy)

334
'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
while visions of sugar plums danced in their heads.

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at December 25, 2023 02:38 AM (XeU6L)

335 And Mama in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap.

When out on the roof there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,
tore open the shutter, and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
gave the lustre of midday to objects below,

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at December 25, 2023 02:39 AM (XeU6L)

336 when, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
but a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

More rapid than eagles, his coursers they came,
and he whistled and shouted and called them by name:
"Now Dasher! Now Dancer!
Now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid!
On, Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch!
To the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away!
Dash away all!"

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at December 25, 2023 02:39 AM (XeU6L)

337 As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
when they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky
so up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
with the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
the prancing and pawing of each little hoof.

As I drew in my head and was turning around,
down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at December 25, 2023 02:40 AM (XeU6L)

338 He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
and his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.

A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
and he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes--how they twinkled! His dimples, how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
and the beard on his chin was as white as the snow.

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at December 25, 2023 02:40 AM (XeU6L)

339 The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
and the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.

He had a broad face and a little round belly,
that shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
and I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself.

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head
soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

341 Ok, back story. This song had stuck in my head from the movie Babe. I had never thought to look it up, but did just now. It is Gabriel Faure. Cantique de Jean Racine.

Translation:
Word of the Highest, our only hope,
Eternal day of earth and the heavens,
We break the silence of the peaceful night;
Saviour Divine, cast your eyes upon us!

Pour on us the fire of your powerful grace,
That all hell may flee at the sound of your voice;
Banish the slumber of a weary soul,
That brings forgetfulness of your laws!

O Christ, look with favour upon your faithful people
Now gathered here to praise you;
Receive their hymns offered to your immortal glory;
May they go forth filled with your gifts.

342 He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
and filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.

And laying his finger aside of his nose,
and giving a nod, up the chimney he rose.

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim, 'ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!"

Question here MH, just WTF are "sugar plums"? Can you buy them today?

Or am I being obtuse and it just refers to candy? Inquiring minds want to know this Christmas season.

Thanks Adriane. Now that I think about what you said I think at our Lincoln-Manahan Home Museum at work we have a related tool in the kitchen. Spirally metal thing, wooden handle and it was called the Devil's "Fork or something" and used to break up the preserved fruit.

It is a very unique piece, of all the hundreds of tours we have given there no one has ever heard of it.

I have never heard of it either, but many preserved foods - like salted fish - were as hard as a brick.

Water and oxygen are required for microbial growth (spoilage.) Salt or Sugar can be used to drive the water content down to the point where nothing can grow in it. In quality it is a measurable thing called 'Water activity' and can be tested for.
