Possibly the most Icelandish story ever. (New York Times) (archive site)
A volcano in southwestern Iceland began erupting Monday with lava fountains reaching up to 330 feet and the glow visible miles away in the center of the capital, Reykjavik.

The location of the fissure poses a risk to the nearby Svartsengi geothermal power plant and to the town of Grindavík, which was evacuated last month because of heightened seismic activity.

"We are looking at a worst-case scenario," said Thorvaldur Thordarson, a volcanologist in Iceland. "The eruption appears big, and only about two kilometers from major infrastructure."

8 Pixy, the area of the US I have my eye on as a retirement bolthole is having a low of 19 F. and a high of 39 for a good part of this week. I don't think I'm going to tell Miss Linda about that. She's not wildly enthusiastic about the idea of moving anyway.

The place (SE Indiana/W Kentucky) had highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s for a good part of November and up until last week -- so this, I think, just means they're moving into the real winter. Think how much you'd appreciate the first warm sunny day after several months of cold!

17 Talking of outhouses from the previous thread - Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa at about 19000'. One of the peaks is Gilman's Point and there's a rest hut there. It has an outhouse (long-drop in local African English parlance).

In one of his memoirs, Michael Crichton tells the story of his attempt to *walk* to the summit of Mt. K when he was in his thirties. Apparently there is a trail that winds up to the summit. No climbing, but it takes so long, and the higher you go the colder it is and the thinner the air. He gave up, I think he wrote, before he got to the top. (No mention of outhouses.)

Now Hagar the Horrible would form a bucket chain for water from a river to the lava. However being really cold and Hagar, by the time the buckets arrive at the lava, the water inside is frozen and stuck to the buckets. Hilarity ensues.

I did get a nice letter from a collection agency yesterday regarding the operation I had on it in Sept. I was to call a number and answer some questions about it, because other attempts to contact me failed. Huh?

Yes there is no "mountain/rock" climbing per se, it's just a slog up. The scree near the top is almost climbing and exhausting, particularly because of the altitude. Many climbers get mountain sickness on the way up (lack of oxygen) and have to be escorted back down.
Apparently disconcerting is when stopping for rest or the night (it's a 3 day climb/descent), when everyone is panting and the local guide (a village Black) pulls out a packet of those foul-smelling Ten-Cent cigarettes and lights up. He's done the climb hundreds of times.

Went to bed at 11:00. Got woken at 2:15 by the puppies. Fed them and went back to bed at 2:35. Puff became colicky and wouldn't stop crying. Her Majesty and I spent until about 3:30 taking care of her. Finally returning to bed.

Even funnier is the BBC Goonshow (Peter Sellers, Harry Secombe and Spike Milligan) episode titled "The Burning British Embassy". Now bear in mind this is zany humor from which eventually we got Monty Python. Anyway the embassy in China is burning so they send parcels of water via mail from England. But since they go via Egypt, they evaporate before getting to China. Much hilarity and madness ensues.

Yeah. I 'think' I liked Dante's Peak better than Volcano. Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton, for two reasons.

Both had the 'lava is not dangerous unless you physically touch it' problem.

109 Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. 38 degrees and mostly cloudy here at Stately Poppins Manor.

Had lots of rain and high winds Sunday night. Woke up to a crashed tree in front of the house that crushed the front of the car. Insurance is sending out an adjustor to determine whether the thing is totaled or can be repaired.

The tree also took out my front door lamppost and, since it was so embedded in the ground, ripped up a yuge chunk of asphalt at the bottom of my driveway. Fortunately, the tree was city property, so the city has to repair the driveway. Unfortunately, they probably can't do it until spring. I have to make some calls.

And work e-mail is down company-wide. Lovely way to start the week.

Generally, the site you're visiting is broken on the back end, or you typed in a url manually that points to a directory on the site that isn't public.

196 109 Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. 38 degrees and mostly cloudy here at Stately Poppins Manor.

Had lots of rain and high winds Sunday night. Woke up to a crashed tree in front of the house that crushed the front of the car. Insurance is sending out an adjustor to determine whether the thing is totaled or can be repaired.

The tree also took out my front door lamppost and, since it was so embedded in the ground, ripped up a yuge chunk of asphalt at the bottom of my driveway. Fortunately, the tree was city property, so the city has to repair the driveway. Unfortunately, they probably can't do it until spring. I have to make some calls.

And work e-mail is down company-wide. Lovely way to start the week.
