The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

If you wind up with a boring, miserable life because you listened to your mother, your Dad, your priest, to some guy on television, to any of the people telling you how to do your shit, then you deserve it.Frank Zappa

Quote II

A man can no more diminish God's glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word 'darkness' on the walls of his cell. C. S. Lewis

Quote III

"This case is at its heart about lies, deceit and procuring sexual experiences by grossly misleading another person. It is about a carefully created, cruelly maintained deception that you practised on your wholly innocent victim for the best part of two years." Judge Grey

Quote IV

"It really will be the highest quality water delivered in the state when it's done,"Darrin Polhemus, the division of drinking water director with the State Water Resources Control Board

Switzerland considers legalising COCAINE: Politicians declare 'the war on drugs has failed'
Switzerland capital Bern is examining a pilot scheme to allow the sale of cocaine

Switzerland's capital is examining a pilot scheme to allow the sale of cocaine for recreational use - a radical approach to the war on drugs that is not thought to have been tried elsewhere.

The Parliament in Bern has supported the idea, which still needs to overcome opposition from the city government and will also require a change in national law.

Drugs policy around the world is evolving, with the U.S. state of Oregon, for example, decriminalising possession of small amounts of cocaine in 2021 in favour of drug treatment.

Wealthy Switzerland has one of the highest levels of cocaine use in Europe, according to the levels of illicit drugs and their metabolites measured in waste water, with Zurich, Basel and Geneva all featuring in the top 10 cities in Europe.

Swiss cities, including Bern, are also showing increasing usage, while prices of cocaine have halved in the last five years, according to Addiction Switzerland, a non-governmental organisation.

'We have a lot of cocaine in Switzerland right now, at the cheapest prices and the highest quality we have ever seen,' said Frank Zobel, deputy director at Addiction Switzerland.

'You can get a dose of cocaine for about 10 francs these days, not much more than the price for a beer.'

Once again FZ was ahead of his time.

Those who get to experience snow know the joys of sledding, having a snowball fight, building a snowman, making snow angels, and of course, scooping up some of the white stuff and eating it - as long as there is no yellow near it. However, it turns out that eating snow could be extremely dangerous.

New research has shown that even newly fallen snow can have deadly items in it, like tiny rocks, bacteria, viruses, road salt, and other forms of pollution. It is so dangerous in fact that experts are urging snow lovers to avoid eating any. According to the study, "Seemingly innocent fresh snow can hide small rocks and debris, creating a risk of choking or causing dental damage. These hazards are often invisible to the naked eye, making snow consumption risky. Contrary to popular belief, snow is not always clean and pure. As it falls, it can absorb pollutants from the air, including car exhaust and industrial emissions, posing health risks if ingested."

Are they eating snow along the New Jersey Turnpike?

And to celebrate Mr. Zappa's warning about snow consumption.........

You're welcome.........

Risk of penile fractures rises at Christmas, doctors find
Researchers suspect euphoria and intimacy of season may be behind spike in cases

Risk of penile fractures rises at Christmas, doctors find
Researchers suspect euphoria and intimacy of season may be behind spike in cases

Linda Geddes Science correspondent
Wed 20 Dec 2023 05.01 EST
It may be the season of loving and giving, but doctors have warned against embracing this spirit too enthusiastically – at least where sexual relations are concerned. They have discovered that the Christmas period is associated with a significantly increased risk of penile fractures – a medical emergency in which the erection-producing regions of the penis snap, usually as a result of forceful bending during over-enthusiastic sexual intercourse.

“This injury tends to occur during wild sex – particularly in positions where you’re not in direct eye contact [with your partner], such as the reverse cowgirl,” said Dr Nikolaos Pyrgides, a urologist at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, who led the research.

The fractures are often heralded by an audible crack, followed by severe pain, rapid loss of erection and severe swelling and bruising. “When [patients] present to their doctor their penis often looks like an eggplant,” Pyrgides said.

The ONT Musical Interlude, Zappa, & Christmas Music Emporium

Regular commenter and all around good Moron Doof submitted the following: The band Frank Zappa labelled “distasteful”

There are as many cases of Frank Zappa sharing his anger at conventional pop music as there are notes on the guitar he wields with such ferocity. The archetypal rock artiste, Zappa has long been a purporter of the purer side of music making, rejecting commercialism at every turn and championing the pursuit of creativity as his only true calling.

Over the years, this has led him to confront some of the titans of the rock and roll world head-on. While later softening his view on the band, he once famously took umbrage with fair-faced Fab Four from Liverpool, who had invaded America’s rock and roll sanctity with a brand new form of pop music. Zappa casually dismissed their influence on a few occasions, once noting: “Everybody else thought they were God! I think that was not correct. They were just a good commercial group.”

Born on: 21 Dec 1940
Frank Zappa multi instrumentalist, producer and composer. Recorded with The Mothers Of Invention and solo, 1969 album 'Hot Rats', 1974 album 'Apostrophe', featuring 'Don't Eat The Yellow Snow'. First band was The Blackouts, recorded one of the first concept albums 'Freak Out'. Zappa died of prostate cancer on 4th December 1993. via thisdayinmusic.com

Man Poisoned Kin's Meatballs With Visine
Cops: Sandwich was doused with eye drops, served to relative

DECEMBER 15--After purchasing a meatball sandwich for his nephew, a Florida Man poured Visine all over the food, which was later partially consumed by his relative, according to police who arrested the man on a felony poisoning charge.

Investigators say James Leach, 45, was at a market near his Pinellas Park home Wednesday evening when he asked an employee “for a bottle of ‘Visine’ due to having dry eyes.”

Upon securing the Visine, Leach allegedly opened a container of food and “proceeded to pour the eye drop solution all over the meatball sandwich” inside, according to an arrest affidavit.

So I actually work in water treatment now. I'm a structural engineer so I'm only adjacent to the folks designing the processes that clean the water.

The truth is there's little difference and in fact it might be worse to have the village upstream dump their treated sewage in the creek and the ln pull it out to treat it for drinking. I have been told the entire volume of the Mississippi is used and reused 13 times by the time it reaches New Orleans.

There is a lot of energy invested in treating wastewater. To essentially dirty it by commingling with a river and then have to spend a lot of energy to make it drinkable does not make economic sense, and it does not make drinking water somehow cleaner than it would be otherwise.

I get that there is a huge ick factor to overcome when the perception is drinking from our neighbors toilets. But we are all doing that anyway.

No problem as far as I'm concerned. Might be funny, & God knows the Pro Bowl needs something to attract more viewer interest.

For decades, in practice scrimmages, NHL teams have divided up into Catholics vs. Protestants. Everybody gets a kick out of it. I don't know if they still do that. My guess would be probably not.

I don't see the new blacks vs whites Pro Bowl idea as being any different than a shirts and skins basketball game myself.

So, maybe California won't have a cholera outbreak. But their thyroid cancer statistics are going to spike. There's a reason iodine is banned in the EU and UK I suppose.

Gotta hand it to NASA. First they give us Tang....and now California can drink piss. SCIENCE!!!!!

I'll check again tomorrow and if they have one that looks good (~12 lbs) I'll get it and carve it up into 1# rib eye steaks and freeze. Get bonus beef ribs lots of meat on the one too.
Already did a 9 pounder and got six steak over an inch thick each. Will slice 'em thinner this time.

One of the evil beauties of the Climate Change hoax is it is impossible to disprove the Climatista's claim that every hurricane, hot spell, cold spell, blizzard, and drought is now caused by releases of CO2 from humans using fossil fuels. You can't prove a negative. But if you could prove global warming due to human-driven CO2 release did not cause a particular hurricane to form, the media and most politicians wouldn't pay any attention to you.

The main problem is no one to date has even tried to pin these f**king maniacs down on what their basic theory is.

There are a handful of question that could pretty much cause these retards to start stammering and glitching out like Mitch The Bitch, but they go unasked.

1. What is your basic theory and mechanism of action for anthropogenic climate change.

2. How does this differ from non-anthropogenic/background climate change.

3. What is the optimum climate change/climate of the earth.

4. At what time in the past was the optimum climate of the earth.

And so on.

By fact of the actual ABSENSCE of the info, when queried in the search.

Try it. Pull up "bing.com". Type in Uncle FAFO. See what results you might get.

Cookies vary, per user and browser, but on mine? Not ONE HINT that it refers to a low down lying lousy pali pretender of multitudinous staged sympathy videos.

I know of at least one local mind he had poisoned with his video lies.

Find me the IDF troop/tanker/airman that did the deed, and I'm buying the Steak Dinner.

The battle for the mind of North America will be fought in the video arena: the Videodrome. The television screen is the retina of the mind's eye. Therefore, the television screen is part of the physical structure of the brain. Therefore, whatever appears on the television screen emerges as raw experience for those who watch it. Therefore, television is reality, and reality is less than television.

284 As regards Frank Zappa, of whom I am a fan (not including his extended guitar solos) he was a product of his environment in that he was, at an early age, the target of a law enforcement entrapment scheme in which a detective paid him to record obscene material in his fledgling music studio and Zappa, needing money to keep the doors open and the lights on, took the money and was subsequently prosecuted for it. This event changed Zappa.

285 Christmas music? Nah.

Been listening to a lot of songs from the Macross series.

Why? Because a lot of Macross news has been happening. AnimEigo started a Kickstarter this month for Macross II: Lovers Again and it is now approaching $200,000.

And earlier this year it seems there was the announcement of a new Macross project that involves Studio Sunrise.

As for us proles in the US ever seeing Macross Frontier or Macross Delta, who knows as neither Big West or Harmony Gold has done anything since they announced two years ago they were burying the legal hatchets.

Moi? Gay shit starts? I turn it off.

I will say that TV gave my generation a scewed view of reality. We were raised on the 30 minute sitcom... where Bill Cosby (Rapist) could amusingly fix every family problem in 30 minutes. Where Fonzie (really little guy) could somehow come in and intimidate every bad guy... and the Red Head Boy Nerd would never have to actually stand up for himself.

And where the Hero Cowboy would not only nail the School Marm, but get rewarded for killing the bad guy.... and the Detective could solve every case, in an hour.

He's been saying things I've never heard before! All these awful four-letter words. You've got to come get me and take me home. Please mama!"
"Come on," her mother said, "calm down! Tell me, what could be so awful? What four-letter words has he been using?"
"Please don't make me tell you, mama," wept the daughter, "I'm so embarrassed. They're just too awful! You've got to come get me and take me home. Please mama."

My whole street had no electricity due to massive trees falling on power lines. Had a wonderful crew from North Carolina with four bucket trucks fix us up late this afternoon into the evening. They had to replace two telephone poles. Most all of us have flooded basements because sump pumps weren't running. Lots of food had to be thrown away, I guess that I am off to the supermarket in the morning. I am so very grateful to have light and heat tonight. I hope that others are okay.

So I got a call from lurker Osprey this morning. "You want to make a road trip to North Carolina?" His stepmother in Saluda passed away, and he has to go there and do estate=related chores, and he said the Suburban would be good for bringing a load of stuff back. Still very much a blue=sky thing at the moment.

It is 0100 here, and I have had a long day. Was up at 0630, and on the road at 0835. Aside from fuel stops and pee breaks for me and the dog, I have been on the road for 15 hours. Made about 1800 km, I think.

How do I despise modern Windows, let me count the ways....

A whole bunch of programs write a bunch of temporary files to the temp directories. And they don't clean them up. Well, I remembered I ought to check that, and there were over 15GB of temp files piled up there in no telling how many directories. That's ridiculous.

So, I decided to write a simple command script to remove files older than so many days, and have it run every so often. Well, the way to do a modern script now is Powershell, and so I did that. I don't know Powershell scripting very well. It's very "object oriented", meaning a simple thing becomes very complicated.

I got it done. But I realized I could've written a C program doing it with the old Win32 API calls and C library calls, the long way, recursing through the temp tree my own self file by file, directory by directory, in less time that it took me to get that stupid powershell script working right.

But, I learned some new tricks. But I may forget them soon.

The ancient Linux WS finally booted up. I didn't do anything, just ignored it for a couple of hours. I do clean out the temp files fairly regularly. Once a week at least. I turn it on a couple of times a week. It's not my main machine.

362 >> The ancient Linux WS finally booted up. I didn't do anything, just ignored it for a couple of hours.

I have no idea what's going on there, sounds crazy. No error messages? No kernel messages to the screen? There are some boot parameters that will make the kernel spew verbose boot up progress messages, and variations of that.

By default they turn that off -- on the latest Linux (Fedora I run mostly, also Ubuntu) you can just hit escape and it will start displaying the boot messages.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (Mzdiz) at December 21, 2023 03:35 AM (Mzdiz)

363 This is what happens. It will boot up normally for months and then, the workstation boots but the monitor ignores it. Just sits there, on stand by. I'll adjust cables and try to get into the setup but most of the time, it just stays in stand by. And then, after I give up and ignore it, it boots up normally. It will be fine for a while, until it isn't. It's old and cranky, like me!

364 >> Just sits there, on stand by.

Ah, that sounds like hardware problems. The system may think it's up, you've just got no display. If it's on a network, can you ping it? Hell, if you've got ssh set up, you could try to ssh into it while it's sitting there.

I'll bet it's a video card and/or monitor hardware problem.

365 Talked to my financial advisor yesterday. His great fear is Uncle Joe winning or Kamala taking over our country. So my investments will stay mostly in bonds and other money market investments. 366 At some point, I'll just re-partition the drives (2 of them) and start over from scratch. I'm not losing anything as there is nothing on it. Well, I have some stuff but it's on an external drive. It's old too and I'm looking at getting another one with more space. The old current on has 2TB. No rush for any of this.

Posted by: Puddleglum, cheer up for the worst is yet to come at December 21, 2023 03:42 AM (sAmhv)

367 It could be a video or monitor problem. Everything there is 15+ years old. I'm surprised it's still chugging along. It was a hand me down workstation. I got it when my BiL died 7-8 years ago. He had it a long time.

370 I've been looking around for workstations minus an OS. Just a simple setup that I can add to it accordingly. Won't actually buy it till the old cranky WS is good and dead. I'm pretty much set with Linux Mint as an OS. I really like it. I have Linux Ubuntu on a problematic laptop. I really need to crack that open and see how bad it's clogged up. It gets really hot, then locks up. Probably years of dust.

371 Morning, fellow insomaniacals! I actually slept about 6.5 hours last night, and Stirling only woke me about fifteen minutes before the alarm instead of an hour. Got to work out this a.m. Then I'll meet with the pension guy, close out some last-minute work, set the office voice mail, and head on out around two.

Miss Linda wants to go to the Dillard's clearance store in the western 'burbs tomorrow. Of course they don't open until noon (!). But if she sees something she really likes, I can make it her Xmas present -- she has yet to tell me what she wants, though I've asked multiple times.

Miley has an old Toshiba laptop, a Satellite model, over 10 years old. The damn CPU cooling fan, attacked to a heat pipe heat sink will clog up with dust -- it was a design flaw, the radiator was dust magnet. I have to take that thing apart, remove the heat pipe assembly and blow out the fins on the radiator.

She doesn't use it anymore, but I keep it going. Had to put the second new battery in it last week.
