Wright Flyer - 12.17.2023.JPG

[Misanthropic Humanitarian is out hunting for the perfect Christmas gift for The Fabulous Mrs. MisHum, so our old pilot friend, Roger Ball, has agreed to crash land his sleigh here tonight. – Buck]

I am honored to answer the call of the HORDE and to provide marginal entertainment via the ONT. It is “the” season for many things to be sure. But I would personally like to give a hat tip to Orville and Wilbur. They started something big on December 17, 1903 That first flight on that breezy day on the Outer Banks barely made it half the wingspan of a Boeing 747, but things picked up from there. The descendants of their rickety Wright Flyer have kept me, and many others, gainfully employed for over half a century. We’ll cover the whole unpleasant patent battles and lawsuits another time. But for now, gentlemen, thank you for your vision and technical skill at getting the aviation industry started in the good old USA.

*****

Keeping with the positive vibes, is this a great country or what?

Ethiopian-born Israeli-American to run for seat of expelled NY Rep. Santos

Nassau County legislator and former IDF paratrooper Mazi Pilip to face off against Democratic former congressman Tom Suozzi in February 13 special election.

Hey demokkkrats, you'd better vote for her. You don't want to be racist do you? Seriously, IDF paratrooper? I would like her on my side.

*****

Checking in with CDR SALAMANDER: “Fullbore Friday”

Poor Poland, Nazis on one side, Communists on the other. The Polish military can hold its head high, it fought as best as it could. The nation that saved Vienna and therefore Europe from the Ottomans went down fighting - and continued fighting throughout the war.

*****

"Control oil and you control nations; control food and you control the people." - Henry Kissinger

*****

From Power Line: AFTER 10/7 (9:45 vid)

At the Washington Free Beacon, Andrew Tobin is tracking down former Israeli peaceniks in order to convey a sense of the impact of the Hamas massacres of 10/7 on them.

"I believed that I was safe. I really believed it."

*****

Related: I really dislike this guy, but this is pretty good. Bill Maher nails this monologue on the Gaza War. This would be better without the barking seals in the audience, but, you know, "entertainment".

"All wars end with negotiation, but it's hard to negotiate when the other side's bargaining position is you all die and disappear."

*****

Also related:

“Why Are Young People So Frightened?”

"First, the hysterical nature of contemporary news coverage. Children are told that the world is coming to an end due to global warming, and they suffered through the absurdly over-hyped covid epidemic.

Second, the feminization of our society and in particular our schools.

Third, the philosophy of Safetyism.

Fourth, financial incentives for mental health diagnoses. An unbelievable percentage of American kids are now being classified as “special needs.”

The consequences of raising a fearful generation are unknown, but perhaps catastrophic."

The Cowboys were dangerously close to waltzing into the playoffs. All true Cowboys fans know that is an unnatural state of affairs. Only when Dallas loses their last two games, and needs some bizarre combination of other teams winning and losing to get them in the playoffs, will the Universe be appeased.

81 Two years ago, I flew on Royal Jordanian airlines from the US to Amman. The flight was on a Boeing Dreamliner, very comfortable, good food, and the staff were professional and friendly. An overhead screen showed the flight's progress. As we approached the eastern Mediterranean, the screen showed the map of the area, with a label naming each country - except one. That country, Israel, was not named on the map. Perhaps it was an accident; but I doubt it. It's as if the Jordanians, who are some of the sanest of the Arabs, still, 50 since the 1967 war, refuse to acknowledge the existence of Israel.
Perhaps I'm making too much of what is, really, a small matter. But I think it's symptomatic. It is a moral imperative that Israel continues to exist, period. But there will *never* be peace in the Middle East.

87 In Gaza today, the IDF began photos of not just new tunnels that they have discovered, but what they describe as an entire underground city. Multiple storage rooms for goods and supplies , living quarters. Barracks, weapons manufacturing facilities, and a central tunnel 2 1/2,miles long , 4 meters wide, literally big enough to drive a truck through. And all of this 50 meters (150 ft) under the surface, putting it out of range of bunker buster bombs.

Hundreds of millions of dollars were spent to build this, and it's looking like Gaza's underground infrastructure is an order of magnitude greater than even the Israelis thought it was.

The great astronomer Simon Newcomb, said this a couple weeks before the Wright Brother's first flight:

Quite likely the twentieth century is destined to see the natural forces which will enable us to fly from continent to continent with a speed far exceeding that of the bird. But when we inquire whether aerial flight is possible in the present state of our knowledge; whether, with such materials as we possess, a combination of steel, cloth and wire can he made which, moved by the power of electricity or steam, shall form a successful flying machine, the outlook may be altogether different.

So, when Kelvin et al were saying "impossible", I don't think they meant physically impossible, but they meant practically impossible for us to achieve any time soon.

165 102 I live 30 miles from First Flight site and remember that on the 100th anniversary in 2003, they were expecting a big ceremony to honor it, but we were in the middle of a wicked Nor'easter of 3 days duration. Give President Bush credit. They somehow managed to helicopter him in safely, but the rain/wind really put a damper on it. Today is the 120th anniversary, and the conditions are the same.

The Memorial Bridge itself was placed there to go from Robert Lee’s Arlington to Abraham Lincoln‘s monument. Look at the eternal flame at Gettysburg and the Eternal Light Peace Memorial. It was all about reconciliation and a testament to the living veterans on both sides, who reconciled and tried to bring a nation together and did.

Now we have a generation or two that have no interest in history and never learned it in the first place. Of course, they can believe that the Civil War just ended and everyone is still hot mad at each other. That’s how they feel about everyone who isn’t them.

193 Grant Avenue in Manassas Virginia is one of the main historical avenues. It is probably the most well-known street in Manassas. The street named after Lee is pretty much an Alley, and an afterthought.

I once contacted the city representatives to ask them why the main road in the town was named after a union general in a southern state when he fought not in first Manassas, nor second Manassas. of course most of the city council carpet baggers, and they didn’t respond to me at all. One council member did respond and he explained the street was named because Grant came to Manassas after the war and they named the street to remember that event while he was president.

Even Civil War aficionados can learn new things. I guess that street is safe, but I doubt many who lived there know why it’s named that.

Anti-static sleeves, ziplock style outer covers... many are Japanese pressings we bought while stationed there. Several HS masters & picture discs, etc.

Have some 60s-70s in unknown condition, inherited from late BF 20 years ago. They don't appear all scraped up, upon visual inspection.

But the left is a mile wide and an inch deep. Punch them in the face and they crumble. Ask Bud Lite.

Trump has been lied about in the media daily, they have indicted him multiple times and stole an election and he now has the biggest polling lead over Biden in the RCP he's ever had and he's pulling away. Wins don't happen overnight particularly when you don't fight back for years. Now we are finally fighting and everyone knows the left can't win without cheating. Albums really aren't worth all that much. It's almost worth it to pay someone to take them to free up (shelf) space. Of course there are valuable albums, but mostly for the covers (see: The Beatles' 'butchered baby' cover) or for the rarity of label release, even 45s. I have a couple of hundred albums and have no idea what to with them/who to give them to. Couple of good covers in that collection, too, like the original Lynyrd Skynyrd 'Street Survivors' cover.

242 I still remember a story from rural England, from maybe a decade ago now.

Some farmer was having his place burgled, and of course each time the cops would tell him they'd look into it and...do nothing.

So he sat at home with his shotgun. The thugs broke in again but this time he shot one of them and the other ran off. They were armed with knives. The one he shot died. And the farmer was convicted for murder.

In Europe the elites have decided the normies will just have to deal with being burgled, and if they don't like it well all that prison space NOT being used for thugs is waiting for them.

As has been said, generally speaking, unless a record is particularly rare, they aren't that valuable.

For instance, that Police 45 with the Murder By Numbers B side, I picked up on EBay for 7 bucks with 3 bucks shipping.

So ten bucks for a 45 from one of the most popular bands of the day.

No that being said, if you got a couple hundred records and complete collections for key artists, then that could be very valuable indeed as a set.

There are online price guides and eBay where you could gauge value and if there is no time factor you could sell off your collection casually.

Biden is a corrupt retard from a tiny state that has been dominated by credit card companies and their deep pockets for years. And now he isn't able to just hide in the basement, he has a record of complete failure to defend.

In the late 60's, near my home in La Crescenta Ca. They would do up their houses and front yards in absolutely magical displays of lights and moving figurines of Disney characters and piped in music....block upon block. My Dad made it a annual night time event over the years when I was a boy with all the siblings packed into the station wagon to go down and do a slow dive through this neighborhood in the weeks before Christmas.

If you’re wondering why @LindseyGrahamSC never condemned Qatar, perhaps it’s because he was a Keynote speaker at a government of Qatari summit and they invested millions of dollars in South Carolina.

What’s going on between @LindseyGrahamSC and Qatar? Will he condemn them for supporting terrorism including against Americans?

332 Watched the George C. Scott version of A Christmas Carol. Had no idea it was made for TV. Used to be a day and age when "made for TV" didn't equal "shite". I enjoyed it.

Thus comes a couple of days after watching It's A Wonderful Life for the first time and I can't help but compare them. I think that they're basically telling the same story. But where A Christmas Carol
is ultimately emphasizing Christian charity, Its A Wonderful Life...doesn't. It's not even close.

If you think of Mr. Potter and Mr. Scrooge as the same character it makes sense. Both are successful if miserly businessmen, but whereas Mr. Potter is an irredeemable shitbag Mr. Scrooge eventually comes around and sees the light. The morality of It's A Wonderful Life is sadly political, condemning Mr. Potter for his great success without any hope for redemption. A Christmas Carol doesn't do that. It merely looks down on Mr. Scrooge's failure to live up to that Christian ideal of, "Whatever you did for the least of these you have done for me." But eventually he comes around and lives up to this ideal fully.

If you haven't seen the George C. Scott version of A Christmas Carol I would *highly* recommend it.

360 Microwave popcorn? Oh, no... hadn't been invented yet!

I learned how to make popcorn on the stove top, in a heavy pan. A sploosh of oil, about 1/4 cup of corn kernels, cover and put it on high heat... shake it up a bit, then keep shaking once the corn starts poppin'. When it slows/stops, pour it all into the big roasting pan & start again. Took 3 or 4 batches for "a movie's worth" for all of us. Pour a melted 1/4 lb of butter over it all & put roaster lid on-- shake shake shake--- then salt it real good and shake some more.

Hahaha, I sure miss those days
