A few days ago I mentioned my LaCrosse weather-clock was showing about 70 seconds fast. I reset the time manually and now it has gone back to 70 seconds fast. Is it possessed? Is Boulder possessed or is Microsoft possessed? The Time server for my PC is time.windows.com. My phones are IP phones with my ISP and they show a time that matches my PCs. Fell asleep in my recliner and woke up at 1:00. Got the puppies fed and went to bed feeling like I'd been hit with a sledgehammer. Her Majesty reminded me I hadn't put up the kennel dogs, so I had to go out and do that. At 4:00, my alarm, which I'd accidentally left of, went off. At 4:30, the puppies again said they were hungry. Fed them again and returned to bed. Her Majesty started snoring. I gave up. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at December 17, 2023 06:14 AM (MoZTd) 9
Morning to all the insomaniacals! The rain seems to be over, temps are cool.
I shwed Miss Linda the kinds of houses available on Realtor in S. Indiana and NW Kentucky. She seemed underwhelmed. She does not believe that our apartment complex, including her condo, is at risk of being condemned and demolished. No, it won't happen next month (probably). But it makes sense to operate as if it will. She also seems to think that Medicare Advantage plans are not a good deal; that you have to ask them permission before you go to see even one of their in-network doctors, or something like that. For those of you on an MA plan, is that true? Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at December 17, 2023 06:17 AM (omVj0) 10

A fair reading of the passages they’ve presented suggests that while some of their claims are bogus, others do show problematic issues in a few of Gay’s writings. But they amount to academic misdemeanors—real, but evidence of occasional sloppiness rather than malicious theft.

Wolfus, my Dad was on MedAdv plan-- granted, he passed 4 years ago-- but at that time he didn't need pre-authorization for office visits. Expensive procedures, yes, pre-auth was often required.
He was being billed to death for co-insurance, as I recall... the plan is only an "advantage" if you're in good general health. Oh, and it's so easy to sign up while you're applying for SS! Wouldn't an MA plan from a large provider like Aetna, say, even if it costs $20 a month, be a better overall bet? Posted by: Iron Mike Golf, on the tablet at December 17, 2023 *** The AMAC site led me to a long list of plans from Aetna, Humana, and PeoplesHealth. Each lists the monthly premium, co-pays, Rx costs; each indicates whether they cover my primary dr. & Rxs (most do); each indicates other benefits like fitness, dental, and vision. And some list a Med Part B give back, though not the amount. Seems like any of them, even the $20/month plans, would be worthwhile. I am a newbie here, only having posted a time or two on the food threads, but Wolfus, I think I can add a little more clarity with the other answers.
Here in Southeast TN, we have an agency that helps people choose Medicare plans and supplemental plans. MA plans are easier, and usually cheaper. They handle everything, but if you have serious health issues, you may have to fight them to get coverage. If I understand correctly, they get paid a lump sum by Medicare. Keeping costs down is the only way they make money, as with all insurance companies. No matter what happens to you, they get paid a contacted amount. Obviously, they are required to cover many basic things. However, in my case, I knew that my husband I and had upcoming joint replacement surgeries, and the counselor I worked with at the agency told me that I would have great difficulty getting the MA plans to cover physical therapy for any length of time. I chose a supplemental plan, and at six months post surgery I was still in PT with no problem from the insurance company as long as my doctor prescribes it. So, we have Medicare, Part B, a supplemental plan, and a drug plan. I chose not to buy eye and dental. Posted by: Menagerie at December 17, 2023 07:37 AM (n/MLA) 74

I've been on MA plans for years. Mine (Aetna) gives me some dental and eyeglasses coverage, and full prescription coverage. I have never paid a premium.
I have to see in-network docs, but that is no problem. I have had laser irodotomies done for glaucoma, hernia surgery, MOHS surgeries for skin, colonoscopies, pacemaker install, and more all done under the coverage. It becomes unwieldy if you live half the year someplace else, because it is location specific. Your network might be a county or two, but if you need to see a doc out of network, other than an emergency, you are going to pay full boat. Resting heart rate much lower, into the 70's from the 80's. Most of the time I just get on the treadmill, put on headphones and either watch and listen to tv or listen to music on my phone. The International Fixed Calendar divides the year into 13 months of 28 days each. A type of perennial calendar, every date is fixed to the same weekday every year. Never adopted. But every months starts on Sunday, ends on Saturday. No "leap year." Days/nights still 24 hours. Posted by: Martini Farmer at December 17, 2023 08:46 AM (Q4IgG) 164

I never cared for most of the Advent hymns. They seemed so somber. I wanted to sing Joy To The World, but alas.
Posted by: grammie winger - I don't belong here at December 17, 2023 08:34 AM (45fpk) The sense of Advent as a penitential season- not as strict as Lent, but still not a time for merry-making- has been almost completely lost. Christmas is for the fun and celebration, which is why it lasts twelve days. Trads have to choose their battles with secular culture on this wisely. sal. We have a very traditional priest and he keeps with the old traditions of Advent as penitential and the 12 days as the joyful celebration. I'm in the church decorating group and we will not put up the Christmas decorations until after morning Mass next Sunday. It's an odd year since the last week of Advent is part the day and Christmas Eve is later that day. Going to be a busy day.

"She also seems to think that Medicare Advantage plans are not a good deal; that you have to ask them permission before you go to see even one of their in-network doctors, or something like that. For those of you on an MA plan, is that true?"
I just made an appointment with an in network doc. They verified my coverage of course. I'm happy with the doctor. She's very young and up on the latest treatments. No complaints. No out-of-pocket expenses yet. I have a BC/BS of TN plan. Posted by: Tuna at December 17, 2023 08:52 AM (oaGWv) 177

Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at December 17, 2023 08:32 AM (FCs/J) ---- Of course the British did have a famous battleship called the Prince of Wales. Sunk by the Japs in 1941, a couple of days after Pearl Harbor. https://is.gd/PyfMQR One of the high schools in Nairobi was the Prince of Wales School. I went to the rival Duke of York school - we even had the battleship's bell, after the ship was decommissioned in 1957. Cool. So instead of being off the solar cycle by roughly 1/4 day per year, it's off by 1 1/4? Pretty soon, Christmas will be in summer, no? Posted by: Oddbob at December 17, 2023 08:53 AM (XGdSh) 180
small somber note from Israel - now Hamas itself has said "no more negotiations" - was to be expected once all their leaders fled and went into hiding. So now this is a pure fight to the death, no other options left. I doubt anyone who's serious is surprised, although I'm sure Biden and Blinken are.

I was a Catholic from birth to my late 20s and in all that time no one actually told us (me) how the colors of the vestment changed, what they meant, etc. Bad. Instead of preaching about giving more money to the church, planned giving, etc., they could have spent 10 minutes on a Sunday such as this, educating the masses.
Posted by: Ciampino - When God started the clock, the Universe came into being. at December 17, 2023 08:38 AM (qfLjt) ~~~~~ I did 14 years of Catholic school in NYC and learned these things from a very early age. And sure, the Church asks for money--all churches do. But I will tell you that my grammar school tuition was not completely, but was very nearly, covered by bake sales, raffles, rackets and bingo. Otherwise, there was no way my parents could have afforded to send all of us there. Posted by: IrishEi at December 17, 2023 08:55 AM (L5aQB) 182
