Never mind this comment. Go on to the next one. 😉
Just before Thanksgiving, we finally got Mom's piano out of storage and into the new house. It's a beautiful baby grand Knabe that was, IIRC, a wedding gift to Mom from Dad's mother. Mom always took great care of it. Only slightly out of tune after two years in storage. Dominates the main hall, but really classes up the joint. I was discouraged from playing it in my youth (siblings!). After college, I became self-taught on a cheap honkey-tonkey upright, more fitting to my kinda-goofy talents than this fine instrument; but I sure enjoy playing it. Late in life, Mom even seemed to like my playing. I wasn't going to take it, but MiladyJo encouraged me to, so here it is. Neither of my sisters plays. My fingers aren't as limber as they were just a couple of years ago, less of a span, and I'm terribly out of practice. But I play for myself, and Milady doesn't complain. Neither does the dog. https://youtu.be/uSIT1j2MoMc Songs on this vid are me recording at Mom's several years ago. Peter Gabriel's new album, "I/O" after 12 years is out.
In a weird little twist, the same twelve songs are given different producers and separated into "The Light Side" and "The Dark Side". "The Light Side" sounds a bit like Adult Contemporary Peter Gabriel. And, in parts, even harkens back to the old Genesis sound...unfortunately it's the old Genesis sound of the Phil Collins led Genesis of the 80s. On "The Light Side" the music meanders a bit and it sounds like PG is waving goodbye. I like the "The Dark Side" better, it sounds more alive. The attack of the instruments is sharper and the bass is used to propel the music along. This PG sounds like he's ready to start again. This isn't prime Peter Gabriel like "So" and that's a disappointment. Still plenty of good stuff here and a good listen. This is the song that sticks with me the most: "The Court" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6chvzqAVCnI Give it a spin! Posted by: naturalfake at December 16, 2023 08:47 PM (QzZeQ) 88

The music is apt. Beethoven concerto no. 2 for piano and orchestra, second movement, adagio. I had to look it up after the show ended. I thought Mozart, but Mo ain't that dark. Posted by: Mr Gaga at December 16, 2023 08:58 PM (KiBMU) 109

Here's one I have on my phone, and listen to a lot when driving. Herbie Mann, "Battle Hymn of the Republic," 1969.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUfWA2hSCJA&loop=0 Used by Hunter S. Thompson as his campaign tune, when running for sheriff out in West Bumfuck, CO. Or whatever the name of the town. It's on the long downhill run coming west out of the Independence Pass toward Aspen, which I did a little after a clear bright dawn after overnighting in Leadville, on a motorcycle, following a CODOT dump truck. The driver of the truck had the turns memorized, and ran it like it was Sebring. 1969, the year of the Apollo moon landing. I was field engineer working out of a job trailer with no radio, in Delaware, Ohio, the job a PPG auto paint plant expansion, and I listened to the takeoff (to me far more exciting than the landing) from the moon on my VW car radio. In summer that year, Dylan came out with his studio album, Nashville Skyline, and I can remember my favorite from those dope-hazed days, "Girl From the North Country." When our kids were teenagers, they were deep into music lessons, practice, and performances. Our son plays piano and our daughter plays flute.
The piano piece I remember best from hearing it played so often is Bach's classic "Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor," which our son would play wearing a cheap black tails outfit we found somewhere, and dracula teeth, to entertain his friends. Phantom of the Opera. The flute piece we really liked hearing our daughter do was Frank Martin's "Ballade." Here is a guy doing it on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nt7nNJjR4u8&loop=0 Both kids are now adults with their own kids and families, but they both still play regularly. Years ago an audiophile pal of mine, we did an A to B comparison. The recording was Hot House Flowers by Winton Marsalis in CD, recorded at 44.1.
On the other end of the toggle switch was the same recording on LP, in phono, with a McIntosh amp and Tannoy speakers. To me, the LP sounded better. Less harsh. Everyone's hearing is different. Really. Your hearing is never so good as the day you are born. It's all a slow but relentless downhill trek from then on. And it's not all the same. Here's a lyric I remember from a John Prine tune, "That's the Way the World Goes Down."
"Starts drinkin' early, gets a big red nose Beats his old lady with a . . . rubber hose Then he takes her out do dinner . . . buys her new clothes." I loved everything he did, and can play and sing most of it. "Summers End" takes me down every time I try. We left Pittsburgh to drive south to FL earlier this week, and went the length of WV on I-79, blue sky, sunshine, hardly anyone on the road. We were listening to a book on audible, but I was looking at the hills and hollers, thinking about that Prine tune. Opioid addiction. Family. "Come on home." As for convenience, who here remembers setting up a really good phono rig? Where you have to calibrate the rate of spin with a strobe and balance the needle just right. Adjust for the corriealis effect, the phases of the moon and so on.
And then the phono player draws more power than anything. I admit it's a total pain in the ass. I own several phono players much in the same way that others have 3 or 4 non functioning cars on their lot. Some are just for parts. Posted by: gourmand du jour at December 16, 2023 10:04 PM (MeG8a) 188

All digital recordings, regardless of resolution transform curves into chunks. Stair steps. The only question is your hearing perception. Analog is still awesome.
And the filters smooth it all out. Look up Nyquist-Shannon. "Analog sounds warmer." WTF is "warmer"? Some nebulous, undefined term that means "I think I hear *something* that sounds better." You know what I remember of the golden analog days? Tape hiss. Pops and scratches and the loss of highs and dynamics as the grooves wore. I love CDs. Yeah, MP3 loses fidelity, which is why I don't listen to them at home, but my car music is all on MP3s, which I burn from CDs. 8-10 hours per disc. The better fidelity of CDs (or WAV) is lost in road noise, engine rumble (Hot Rod Music) and wind. Posted by: buddhaha at December 16, 2023 10:57 PM (9WT2E) 195
