Top Story

  • Finished up a major project at work that had taken over my life recently - a cloud migration from one crappy provider to another slightly less crappy one - involving dozens of applications, multiple database types, and over 100TB of data.

Celebrated by ordering the latest edition of The Art of Computer Programming from Amazon. I already have volumes 1-3 - somewhere - but it didn't cost much more for the now five-volume full set than for just the two new volumes.

Not from Amazon, anyway. A lot more elsewhere.

  • Intel's Meteor Lake laptop chips - the real 14th generation - are out. (AnandTech)

14th generation desktop chips are already here, but those are just relabeled 13th generation parts, just as some 13th generation desktop chips were relabeled 12th generation parts.

    How's the performance?

We don't know. Intel didn't provide any review models, not to anyone.

  • Samsung's Galaxy Book 4 range has the new Meteor Lake CPUs. (Tom's Hardware)

It will be available in South Korea next month, and in the rest of the world... Eventually.

My old Android phone is so old VoLTE is an option in Settings, and I failed to realize with the changeover I had effectively turned off the capacity to make phone calls.
All cell phone calls are VoLTE now, so I'd turned off my phone without realizing it.

Look up the "Pioneer anomaly". It was thought for a while there may be never gravitational physics afoot, but no, it was just radiation pressure.

Anyway, Voyager 1 is the fastest. I don't know if it's overtaken the Pioneers yet, but it's the fastest, in terms of hauling ass out of the solar system of any of the probes we've launched.

Again, Godspeed Voyager 1. It will be in the neighborhood of the star Gliese 445 in about 40K years.

Voyager 2, will be in the neighborhood of Sirius in about 296K years.

If the photons of the electromagnetic spectrum travel as waves much like ocean waves arriving at a beach, parallel to the beach, then they would permeate the whole of space. If they travel more like beams then they will become attenuated as the beam spreads more and more as it goes further and further, until it is no longer discernible from background radiation/noise.

Here is the order of the solar system escape probes:

Voyager 1, Voyager 2, Pioneer 10, Pioneer 11, and New Horizons.

Voyagers were faster than the the Pioneers. Voyager 2 had just eased past Pioneer 10 in terms of distance for Ol' Sol.

Voyager 1 has now officially gone farther than any man has gone before. Well, any probe.

The sounds almost like the difference between alternating and direct current. Alternating current can travel further distance then direct but in the end there is a limit to even that.

Second brother has (IMO) a drinking problem, and gets very argumentative after 'having a few'-- seems his life is very unsatisfactory and he's unhappy.

We speak frequently by phone, but last time he was soooo contrary, so combative. Just digging at me, and I've done nothing *to* him. Grrr! I couldn't handle it. I have more than enough problems here, and stress, and responsibilities, and this bro seems to think I have All The Time In The World (since no longer working for pay) and he doesn't comprehend hubby's mental & physical issues which add to my list every day.

Nope, even Sirius won't be able to discern I love Lucy. Signal to noise will be too low.

This is the problem with Seti. To get a signal, above the signal to noise threshold over these vast distances, you need a shit-ton of power, and you need to beam it directly toward where you're aimin'.

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.”

Yes, you read that right, the EU is claiming Twitter broke the law for running the EU's own advertising.

Traveling from east to west across Pennsylvania there is a section of the turnpike that runs through the 'icebox' of the state. The weather forecast may be clear at your starting point and at your destination but that about 30 mile stretch there are mountains of salt on the sides of the road. This time of year you'll go through a gallon of windshield wiper fluid trying to keep the windshield clear.

Make sure you start out with the reservoir topped off.

Benjamin Reese is a seventh-grade social studies teacher at Warner Robins Middle School.

He was arrested for terroristic threats and cruelty to children in the third degree on Dec. 8.

Reese allegedly threatened to behead a student for making a comment about how they were offended by his Israeli flag on Dec. 7, according to the incident report.

In the Houston County Sheriff's Office report, 21 people are listed as victims; 15 are minors.

The big story here though is parents are upset they were not told that their kids were interviewed about the event. Not that their little shits support terrorists.

Thanks. None of the 'property in question' belongs to anyone but Dad's Estate. I am able, and *have been able* to do whatever with the whole. It's just that this bro has indicated his desire for certain items. I am under NO OBLIGATION re: any of it.

I'm tired of being Ms. Nice Guy. Tired of getting walked all over. That's all.

And... the end is near!

188 JQ,

I've been through a similar situation. There's bad blood already so quit trying to be "nice".

My sisters just broke into the house and took what they wanted. Then they got lawyers to sue me just as a harassment.

It can get really bad so I recommend you moving fast before your brother gets any ideas.

This bro doesn't have any $ for lawyer, and lives 1000 miles away, so not worried. But I will be moving quickly in the next few months.

No, "recall" usually means they downloaded a new patch to the software on their own. The regulators make them call a automatic software update a recall.
