The victims ranged in age from 16 to 36 but James declined to name them or explain why the charges against Law had been upgraded. He also said he did not know how many people abroad might have died.
A German investigation in 1987 had found there was not enough evidence to charge Krombach of the murder of Kalinka, who was found dead in her bed during the summer holidays of 1982. But the doctor's credibility was damaged when in 1997 he was found guilty of drugging and raping a 16-year-old patient, emboldening Kalinka's biological father, Andre Bamberski, in his campaign to see Krombach arrested. Frustrated with Germany's refusal to hand Krombach over, Bamberski hired a kidnap team to snatch the doctor from his home in Scheidegg, Bavaria, bundle him into a blacked-out limousine and bring him to France. The doctor was left, bound and gagged, near a courthouse in the border town of Mulhouse, and later put on trial.Good for him. Andre Bamberski was charged with kidnapping and given a one year sentence, suspended. I'm kinda surprised he got off so easily. I notice the author works in DC but lives in Arlington County, one of the richest counties in the US. As someone who lived and worked in a major city for over 20 years I can tell you that things change when the sun goes down.
I agree that you can't oversell the issue but I also know folks from my old neighborhood don't have to be sold on the issue, crime has gotten a lot worse. They don't need to be sold on what they do see with their own eyes.

A big part of the Far Cry formula is that the antagonist is charismatic, believable, and not entirely a bad guy in a morally ambiguous world. And they usually offer the player a self-aware, nonstandard game over in the opening scene(s) by acting civil toward the said antagonist, at which point they part ways with a suggestion to maybe shoot more guns next time.

One of the reasons crime is "down " cops s aren't arresting as many, DAs are undercharging, teen crimes are being handled in family courts so their crimes don't always show up in stats , and prison is not being utilized like it should be.

While this is true, it's also true that crime is still massively down from it's peak in the late 80's, early 90's.
Major cities would have 1000s of murders per year.
Then we locked everyone up and crime went down, now we are letting everyone out and letting everyone off and crime is going up.
There may be a correlation between the two.

I'm playing around with a clean install of Windows 11, just to see. It's basically spyware, if not malware. No telling what all it's telling MS (and their buddies) about what you're doing.
Anyway, I'm sitting here doing shit, installing stuff, and I think a hard drive must be failing. I hear reset sounding clicking. Then, I hear the distinct sound of two hard drives spinning up, and it hits me.
It's all the eco-shit I'd forgotten about that needed to be disabled. Damned that was spinning down hard drives after 20 minutes. And it saves no significant power at all. UPS wattage readout confirms. Spinning them down does nothing.

The problem, and what those who defend just living with it don't (or won't) understand, is that what is happening is that these cities are descending into 3rd world norms. In all of the great cities of the 3rd world, there are parts where the wealthy live and shop and are perfectly happy with their lives - but in other parts of those cities, there will be hillsides where 30,000 people live in cardboard boxes. (I've seen one of those) The important point is that it is *impossible* for a democratic (small d) civil society to survive in such circumstances. The choices devolve into cartels, dictatorship, or chaos. That's the price of letting society slide out of control.

part of Germantown is still good; overall it's a shame what happened to it but I still believe it can gentrify (back to what it was!). Chestnut Hill is fine but even there property crime is way up. the Philly Cricket Club is still nice! we do events there.
They have new enterprise zones around Parkside which I think is actually working semi? that is an area that I have always wished could gentrify. I mean the park, the zoo, the Mann ... so much is right there!

I will say this, it does sound better and more "present" largely because of the inherent noise, hiss and pops that are present in the signal due to the medium.

I'm learning shit I ashamedly did not know 'bout weather. Temperature here is about 33F, and dew point is 24F or so. Yet frost is nicely forming all over the ground right now. I asked my cousin, the re-tard meteorologist to 'splain.
This I did not know. The practical "frost point" is always higher than dew point. It will be in between dew point and dry bulb temperature.
The reason is basically, the vapor pressure of ice at a given temperature is less than over supercooled liquid water at the same temperature. In this regime of conditions, ice crystal formation is heavily favored over condensation to a liquid.

I don't necessarily think there was any intention of any kind of double entendre. I hear "Uigher" pronounced as "wee-ger." Maaaaybe in some instances it's pronounced as "wigger." That's the only way I can imagine it being considered as a racialist double entendre. Either pronunciation is probably incorrect but I think the "wee-ger" pronunciation is by far the most common. Anyway, what the communists are doing to the Uighers and others is horrific. Fuck the communists.

Blast from the past -- 1983. Grew up in Vegas. Home from college, and placed my first big bet, $500, on the Redskins.
Post-game,driving home at night from brother's house -- riding a motorcycle in front of us -- with mom in passenger seat.
Suddenly, all cars stopped on Boulder Hwy; get out and see motorcycle on ground. Brother hit a car turning onto hwy with NO LIGHTS on at low speed, hit its rear end and went flying over it, doing an Evel Knievel landing (a la Caesar's Palace).
I run up and he's in shock w/multiple broken bones in arms & legs. Fortunately, he lived & recovered. The catch? He always rode without a helmet, but Nevada had recently passed a helmet law.
I was told at the scene by Nevada Highway Patrol -- after seeing big gash in helmet -- that it saved his life.

Urusei Yatsura: Always My Darling. According to Wikidingdong it's the worst of that series. No, not by a long shot. It's decent. I liked it. The studio changed the character designs somewhat but still it was pretty okay. The fourth movie is the actual worst. DAAAAAHHHH-LINNNNG!!!!!!
Holiday Inn. I spent nearly the entire movie wanting to lick Marjorie Reynolds up and down. Holy freakin' schnikes is she one fine lookin' lady! Well, the skid, made of 2X6, 2X4, and plywood, originally had end caps, but I took them off so I could get the loader forks under it. That part worked like a charm. I will probably build a steel skid, in situ, because I can't really get the engine out of there now. Forks won't work, and I already put the tractor to bed, anyway.

Its been amazing to watch the decline in owner's mechanical ability over the years. The shit I end up fixing is unbelievable. Well, it wasn't whiteout conditions, but visibility was maybe a hundred yards. Fortunately, I encountered very little traffic. One sight I saw: came up over a hill, not far from home, and all the homes on that hill were dark. I figured, uh-oh, power is out. Went another mile, and there at the next intersection was a line truck from the power company, and a guy on the ground using a long pole to change the fuse on the pole. There was a bright arc flash, and the fuse fell open again. I guess they will have to do more searching...

2, 3 weeks back, I was on the web when I lost AOS. Checked the wi-if and realized the tablet was on battery and the router was dead. Hmmm. Everything is dead !!! Went outside and across the street was lit, but none of us. Looked back in the alley and yeah verily, APS truck with the guy in the bucket doing his thing at 2 am.
Lights came back on in about 20 minutes. He did the flip the switch with a long pole with the bucket a far distance away as well.

Heh. True, dat. That skid made the trip to AZ and back once before, but it had its end caps on, because I was able to load/unload with a chain from overhead, because Suburban with barn doors. Today's ride is an '08 Suburban, with liftgate hatch, not barn doors, so that kind of lift is impossible. Hence the forklift-style pallet. I should have nailed the end caps back on for the duration of the trip. My own damned fault.

MiniTool Partition Wizard. Which was pretty good at the time. I also Paragon Disk Managers as well. Some of those are pretty old, but I don't think they did lifetime upgrade claims.
Paragon makes a Linux Ext file system driver for Windows, and I've got a bought and paid version of that. That's what got me looking at the partition tools I have. The license for the Linux driver was for another machine, and I'm looking if it's worth it to try to transfer, or just use the free version (which will throttle large file transfers) or buy a new one.

If it can handle GPT format, it can handle this. I know I've used this Paragon hard disk manager I have as well as the MiniTool to mess around with GPT disks.
I've got several of them on this system. I didn't like the EFI system partition Windows will create by default -- too small -- and I was able to create a bigger one, and get it booting properly.
I have 5 internal hard drives on this machine, and I like to make them all bootable, so if the master boot gets corrupted on one, I can just go into the BIOS/UEFI and boot from another one.
Those tools allowed me to set all that easily.

Oh, BTW, Windows 11 will still install to a regular MBR disk, that I know, because that's what I did here. A MBR boot, using "compatibility mode" with the UEFI "bios" on this machine.
There is a nice tool, "Rufus", a USB stick burner, that can modify USB Windows install sticks to do this. It will turn off a lot of the requirements by injecting stuff into the image registry files. It turned off the TPM requirement, as well as setting up a regular local user account from the get-got, bypassing the crap where MS tries to force you to use an online MS account.
There is a trick you can do with a regular install to get around this, but Rufus did it nice and slick. And it turned off all the "privacy" stuff as well, turning off as much of the phoning home stuff as possible.

I'm actually feeling pretty special. I actually stumbled on a bug, a real bug, in Intel's latest whiz-bang Fortran compiler. The new one, IFX, is LLVM based. They are moving their C and Fortran compilers to LLVM back end.
It was a code generation error, botching a function call. It wasn't in the front end, but the LLVM back end, and it got an official LLVM bug ticket and all that.
Never thought that would happen to me, as they used to say in Penthouse Forum.

I have Rufus (free) but have not explored all its capabilities. I just used it for boot USB sticks. Normally, when prepping a new Win installation, I have just unplugged the network cable or disabled wifi at the appropriate point and thus created a local account. That way Windows doesn't try and copy my personal stuff all over and nag me everyday. I also disable OneDrive. I don't use other people's servers for my storage.

This is with the latest versions. When you go to burn a Windows image, it will pop up those options.
The local user account option will prevent you from having to unplug the network. With this latest Win11 version I installed, even then, without this Rufus trick, you have to drop to a command prompt, and issue some command, otherwise it won't install. Won't allow you to create a local account.

This happens with Pro version as well as Home with the latest Windows 11. With Windows 10 Pro, you could create a local account with the regular installer. It's difficult, but you could without unplugging the network or command line tricks.
With Windows 11 Pro, that's gone as well.

Intel's Fortan (and C/C++) compilers are now free. It's in the OneApi package. Install the free Visual Studio Community version, and the free OneAPI packages, and you've got a nice Fortran compiler.
If interested, they are deprecating the classic C/C++ and Fortran compilers in favor of the new LLVM based ones. Get the last Oneapi 2023 version which will be the last that have the "classic" compilers.

These later versions of Rufus will even download an image of WIndows for you if you don't have one already. But it will modify any image you have (that it understands) on hand.
Download it, modify it as you desire, and burn it to a USB.
I wonder how MS lets Rufus get away with this. Well, it downloads from official MS sites and applies well know tricks to the registry of the image.

I was just playing with Rufus' download option. It can download Win 11, 10, and 8.1.
It will also download and create some EFI shell boot sticks. I remember playing around to put a EFI shell program on the EFI system partition, one of the reasons I wanted a bigger EFI partition.
Rufus will do that from a USB stick.
A EFI shell is like a command prompt, running directly under the UEFI firmware. You can do all sorts of tricks with that.

I need to update my UEFI tianocore shell. There are various tricks you need to employ to get a UEFI firmware to boot that shell.

Some of the latest UEFI firmware will have a shell built right in. My system does not, and it has to be loaded from disk.
Anyway, a UEFI shell is a command prompt that runs directly under the UEFI firmware. You can do all sorts of low level shit with this. This is before any OS is booted.
