[i[General Motors said nearly half its Buick dealers took buyouts this year rather than invest in selling and servicing electric vehicles as the automaker's brands transitions to all electric by 2030.

That means GM will end 2023 with about 1,000 Buick stores nationwide, down 47% from where it started the year.

Late last year, Buick said it would be asking dealers to commit a minimum investment of $300,000 to $400,000 to prepare their stores to sell and service EVs.

I don't blame a bunch of dealers for not wanting to drop half a million bucks just so GM will allow them to stay in business. GM did this before, with Cadillac and lost a fifth their Caddy dealers. In that buyout dealers got paid (per Yahoo) "between 300k and 700k." No idea of the average, but probably half a million or more. If this one is similar, GM is going to spend around around $450 million to close around 885 Buick dealers.

Half a billion bucks to sell fewer cars and shrink the dealer base by half. American business. There's nothing like it.

If these people cared about The Environment (tm), they'd be demanding that we smash the Houthis to avoid hugely fuel-wasting detours around Africa, or pushing aggressively for electrification in Africa - even electrical generation based on the Dread Carbon - to remove the dependency on kerosene for lighting on the Dark Continent. Kerosene lamps in Africa consume as much fuel as jet air travel in the United States (at least, as of a few years ago), but with much more pollution.

They don't care. It's never been about The Environment.

221 German farmers have accused Olaf Scholz of declaring “war” on their industry as they amassed in Berlin to protest against cuts to fuel subsidies and tax breaks.

Some 10,000 agricultural workers descended on the capital’s Brandenburg Gate on Monday with 3,000 tractors, bringing traffic to a standstill as they demanded an about-turn on plans by the German chancellor’s coalition administration.

Berlin says that ending farmers’ diesel subsidies and vehicle tax exemption are a necessary part of austerity measures aimed at resolving the country’s budget crisis in 2024.

But the German government is now facing a potentially major revolt from agricultural workers about the changes.

Look, metric just makes more sense. What's a pound? What is it based on? A kilogram, now *that* makes sense. It's real, y'know? A "10 pound hammer" is just an anachronism.

This is why you stupid Americans always use such bizarre comparative measures. "Long as a football field" or "weighs as much as five elephants." Your weights and measures make no sense, which brings about these absurdities. If you use metric like a civilized country, those comparisons would all be superfluous. Your recalcitrance on this topic is one of the evidence of your general arrogance and inflexibility.

Joe used to be a more dynamic speaker. He has gotten older and more careful with his words, but also more presidential. He certainly is the right person for this moment in time.

A President Kamala Harris will kill it, but the media and right-wing snipers cringe at the notion of a strong woman of color being President. The white male establishment will snipe, dog whistle, and start in with the racist, misogynist tropes nonstop.

We are in uncertain territory this year, Biden ran in 2020 mainly from his basement. This year he is going to have to campaign on the road, can he win? Someone like Obama

I saw a video on my YouTube feed where an aluminum factory caught fire. It was terrifying to watch as machinery started bursting into flames and the roof collapsed. It was like watching the end of a James Bond movie where the villain's lair is collapsing--only it was happening for real.

Everyone in the vicinity ran like their lives depended on evacuating the area--because if they stayed around they would be dead.
