I've already had it for a while with the sportsters all going with hyphenated names, and I'll refrain from going off on all the unnecessary jr.'s, II's, III's, etc. Today's aggravation is with inconsistent sportswriters. Writing about a hyphenated dude (can't remember which one), the writer, seemingly randomly, sometime hyphenated the first name to the middle, sometimes the middle to the last. Drove me f*cking nuts. Posted by: Xipe Totec at December 20, 2023 09:48 AM (pohLc) ++++ [i[General Motors said nearly half its Buick dealers took buyouts this year rather than invest in selling and servicing electric vehicles as the automaker's brands transitions to all electric by 2030. That means GM will end 2023 with about 1,000 Buick stores nationwide, down 47% from where it started the year. Late last year, Buick said it would be asking dealers to commit a minimum investment of $300,000 to $400,000 to prepare their stores to sell and service EVs. I don't blame a bunch of dealers for not wanting to drop half a million bucks just so GM will allow them to stay in business. GM did this before, with Cadillac and lost a fifth their Caddy dealers. In that buyout dealers got paid (per Yahoo) "between 300k and 700k." No idea of the average, but probably half a million or more. If this one is similar, GM is going to spend around around $450 million to close around 885 Buick dealers. Half a billion bucks to sell fewer cars and shrink the dealer base by half. American business. There's nothing like it. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at December 20, 2023 09:57 AM (zxP/x) 146

“You know, every election cycle we talk about this is the most election of our lifetime,” Harris said, without correcting herself. “Lawrence, this one is, this one is,” she told the host. “We are literally talking about people who are attempting to divide our country in the most crude, frankly, and profound way,” she said. “We are talking about those who are intent and purposeful to, to attack fundamental freedoms [of rigging elections, crony contracts, etc.].” Posted by: SMOD at December 20, 2023 10:17 AM (RHGPo) 215

German farmers have accused Olaf Scholz of declaring “war” on their industry as they amassed in Berlin to protest against cuts to fuel subsidies and tax breaks.
Some 10,000 agricultural workers descended on the capital’s Brandenburg Gate on Monday with 3,000 tractors, bringing traffic to a standstill as they demanded an about-turn on plans by the German chancellor’s coalition administration. Berlin says that ending farmers’ diesel subsidies and vehicle tax exemption are a necessary part of austerity measures aimed at resolving the country’s budget crisis in 2024. But the German government is now facing a potentially major revolt from agricultural workers about the changes. Posted by: SMOD at December 20, 2023 10:20 AM (RHGPo) 222

Awright! Internet seems to be back at work!
There seems to be a lot to "unpack," as the current expression has it, with today's art. I recall some item by Juan Gris being used in my Spanish high school textbook to head a chapter (probably one of those annoying ones like "use of the subjunctive" or "por vs. para"). Strangely, I tend to like these colorful, angular abstracts for some reason. I have no illusions about Joe Biden. He is an experienced, knowledgeable, moral man who I trust to do the right thing. Unfortunately, he is not dynamic. He does not have a strong on camera presence. He is not a compelling speaker to most people in today's fast paced media environment. And, the media is not going to give him any breaks.
He needs all Democrats to hit the airwaves in support. All hands on deck. Even rank and file Dems like us on DU can play a part! Joe used to be a more dynamic speaker. He has gotten older and more careful with his words, but also more presidential. He certainly is the right person for this moment in time. A President Kamala Harris will kill it, but the media and right-wing snipers cringe at the notion of a strong woman of color being President. The white male establishment will snipe, dog whistle, and start in with the racist, misogynist tropes nonstop. We are in uncertain territory this year, Biden ran in 2020 mainly from his basement. This year he is going to have to campaign on the road, can he win? Someone like Obama with charisma wouldn't be a contest. We won't know until November. (LifeSiteNews) — A Virginia school board member attracted the headlines he was undoubtedly seeking after he was sworn in by placing his hand not on the Bible but on a stack of sexually explicit LGBT books frequently condemned by conservatives concerned about protecting children’s innocence.
Democrat Karl Frisch participated in the swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday for the Fairfax County, Virginia school board by using five books that contain offensive and sometimes extremely graphic sexual depictions including “Gender Queer,” “Flamer,” and “All Boys Aren’t Blue.” The Washington Examiner reported that Frisch, Fairfax County’s first openly LGBT-identifying school board member, is currently the vice chairman of the board and is set to become the chairman on January 1. So we practice in yards but print maps in meters. Posted by: Pudinhead at December 20, 2023 11:02 AM (pZ64F) 396
I had a class where I was calculating something falling. In imperial I had to use the gravitational constant, and in metric I did not. It was the only time in my entire life that metric was easier.

Part of the problem I have with Celsius is that while it makes logical sense in relation to the phase changes of water, it is not useful when living. 0-100 is all well and good for freezing vs boiling, but Fahrenheit is expanded in a way to where it is easier to get more granular at livable Temps. 50 is different from 60.
