Tech News

  • Google Fiber is now rolling out its 20 gigabit internet service, for $250 per month. (Tom's Hardware)

    For $250 per month I can get 250 megabits. While that's A$250 - about US$150 - 250 megabits is a lot less than 20 gigabits.

  • TSMC is ramping up to ship 2nm chips in volume in 2025. (WCCFTech)

Apple will be the first major customer, as has become the norm. But the iPhone has paid for TSMC's massive technical advances over the past decade, so I don't begrudge Apple its typical 12-month exclusivity period.

  • Huawei meanwhile is working on 5nm chips. (Tom's Hardware)

China is currently stuck at 14nm because they can't buy the EUV optical tools needed for finer process nodes due to sanctions, and can't make their own because they're decades behind in that particular part of the tech sector.

So what they're doing is something called multi-patterning: By running a chip through the process multiple times, very very carefully, you can end up with finer details than you can by just doing it once.

Problem is each pass through the machine increases the cost and increases the failure rate, so cost goes up exponentially. It's very much a stopgap approach, and unlikely to see adoption in any mainstream devices.

  • After acquiring VMWare, Broadcom is on a newfound mission to fuck both its customers and its staff. (Ars Technica)

Perpetual licenses are out; all products will now be subscription-only.

Also out are nearly 3000 employees.

4 Morning,, fellow insomaniacals! 'Tis 50 F. outside, no rain, about as dry as it gets around here. I've got our last staff meeting of the year to look forward to this a.m.

Woke up with both cats sleeping with me, Dagny by my stomach and Stirling at my back. Then he leaped over me to go to her, and they started grooming each other's heads and necks. Strange that little Dagny would be there; she usually sleeps atop the couch in the living room. But every now and then she surprises me.

I thought I might be taking off tomorrow to have the car's new wheels installed, but my mechanic says his "time machine" is broken. (I wanted to say, "Can I borrow it and go back to 1962?") He meant "timing machine," I think, for balancing the wheels. Maybe we'll have to do this next week.

5 I came across this accidently. It's as bad as the 'run your car on gasoline and water' trick, just in a different direction and so much more blatant.

I don't know many people who can afford a 100k golf cart, so this isn't surprising.

Ford had made noises about producing more lower level trim levels at a relative lower cost, but they probably did the math and that math did not work at all.

Essentially to get into any Ford, you've got to pony up 35k plus, and the average price of a new Ford is closer to 50k, so unless something changes dramatically, Ford is going to go tits up in 5 years.

Thanks for the name of the artist, I did not know that. I have an unfinished painting that I did in his fashion after stumbling across that video. It's going to be a gift. Someday. A seascape of a girl at the edge of the sea, on hands and knees. A key part of moving to Socialism is removal of high trust interactions. As most government interactions with agencies and bureaucrats is underhanded, heavy-handed, and burdensome these actions will move into society as a new norm.
So-called Justice Reforms, Social Justice, and/or Restorative Justice all allow for creeping lawlessness and criminality.
Private property crimes are normalized as private property right are diminished.

Ben Had - Oops, it looks like the artist is actually Christina Nguyen

is a Vietnamese American painter born in Mountain View and then grew up in San Jose. Inspired by ocean and nature, her works are dominated with oil paintings of moody figures and with the texture which feels like watercolor.

>>All part of the plan to remove those pesky personal vehicles from the streets of America.

It may be part of the plan to kill all of the American automakers, the Japanese and the Swedes are still producing affordable sedans and SUV.

The American automakers no longer produce sedans and have hitched their wagons to higher cost SUV's and pickup trucks.

And Chevrolet seems to be the only company giving lip service to vehicles under 30k, but lets see how many low cost Trax SUV's they actually produce.

My bet this 21k SUV quickly creeps up in price similar to the Maverick and becomes 30k toot sweet.

Thanks for the name of the artist, I did not know that. I have an unfinished painting that I did in his fashion after stumbling across that video. It's going to be a gift. Someday. A seascape of a girl at the edge of the sea, on hands and knees. The woman who I will gift it to had a hobby of getting on a ferry in the middle of the night to go out to a barrier island and help sea turtles escape from their nests. I just have to get the contrasts right in the figure, they're too strong.

Too many RINO's in the House, my guess is a good portion of the GOP clowns that voted to oust Santos, vote against an impeachment inquiry.

And optics wise, this should have been done a year ago, not going into an election year, it simply looks political at this point.

This is simply an inquiry, if it was started now, the vote to impeach would probably happen many months from now smack dab in the middle of the general election.

Again, this is useless and futile effort by the GOP and will simply piss off both sides.

139 China could buy all the to of the line lithography gear on Earth and still be no closer to making what they want, because you don't just follow a recipe and get a perfect etch mask. Every single step of the way is a tooth pulling ordeal just to get 75% right. Design the mask so it exposes right. Get your resist spin right. Get your exposure dead on. Get the post exposure bake and developer dunk right. Do all that and yay, you made a mask. Now you got to get your etch or your deposition and liftoff spot on. Spent a year getting all that right? Hooray. Now do it twice more times for the rest of your stack and hope to hell you don't mess up your registration between steps.

And do all of that with a bunch of dumbasses who majored in copying off someone else's paper and manipulating other people into running their experiments and writing their dissertation for them. Except now you're on your own and have no one to cheat off of anymore.

Good luck, dummies.

Just look at the reaction of people to Elon Musk taking over a single platform, and altering it somewhat.

For comparison: the only channel I watched as a kid was TV Land (except for a half-hour of MTV for B&B). When TV Land started changing, getting commercials and bringing on newer shows I didn't like as much... I moved on with my life and quit watching TV, besides Broncos football. Then they ruined that, so I moved on again. I only watched movies. Those got terrible, so now I only watch old ones and foreign ones.

Nobody should never care this much about *any* entire type of

One of the core responsibilities of a parent is to socialize their kids. Get them to shed their inborn lizard brain nature that they are the center of the universe. Get them to learn how to exist around other people without causing damage to themselves or others.

Now we have parents abdicating that responsibility to literally every stranger on earth. "Off you go, kid, God Speed!" And so children learn how to be a person by emulating other people who have never learned how to be a person.

152 >>Just look at the reaction of people to Elon Musk taking over a single platform, and altering it somewhat.

He didn't alter it somewhat, he completely overhauled it which is exactly why the left and the deep state are so angry at him.

Prior to Musk taking over Twitter was nothing but a propaganda machine for the left. Any non-state approved facts were removed with extreme prejudice. The place was crawling with former intel community operatives from the FBI, CIA and NSA not to mention the State Dept.. They used that place to build narratives for the media to report on and so we got "proven" things like Russia collusion, the China virus coming from a bat soup and ivermectin being horse paste.

Just yesterday the FCC decided to cancel a $1 billion loan guarantee to X because they claim X couldn't meet their new and improved rules that only applied to X. They hate Musk now but they won't be able to use X in the 2024 election unless they throw him in prison too.
