45 This work has conflicting imagery. On the surface it looks pretty innocent, but there are signs of naughtiness too. The white dress, white bird, and a Bible on one hand. On the other is the nearly-bared breast and the sealed letters clasped near her heart. It also looks like she's trying to hide the letters, too.

91 Well, if the artist was trying to portray a soft and feminine image, he succeeded. The gentle curves, soft shawl and gown, the girl's delicate skin tones, soft arms and breast and expression, even the white dove. Don't forget the vase of flowery peonies. It makes a contrast with the man made objects of wood, straight lines and their realistic details.

It's not an exciting image but a pleasant one.

It's true that zero is a number. But Pixy doesn't start counting comments at zero, rather at one. If you count out one hundred integers from one, you stop at one hundred and one. Ergo, to comply with the 100-comment rule, one should not wander off-Art-Thread-topic until comment 102 at the earliest.

No, we got more equitable.

All opinions are now equal - even the really stupid ones. And since the really stupid ones are also highly correlated with fun and negatively correlated with responsibility, they can easily gain support in an environment where any judgement that limits fun or increases responsibility is considered bad and any judgement that expands the former or shrinks the latter - even if it is really stupid - is considered fair.

We've optimized for short-term irresponsibility. The average is probably not actually stupider to much if any degree, but all checks on irresponsibility have made taboo and so it is able to maximize - especially when the bandwidth and reach are unbounded in practical terms.

237 Many people are superficially familiar with Marfan syndrome, but did you know:

The main abnormality in Marfan syndrome involves abnormal connective tissue resulting in the more obvious bony and collagen effects, manifesting as a tall, thin body build (ectomorphic), long thin 'spidery' fingers (arachnodactyly) and chest wall deformities. The sternum may be caved inward, called pectus excavatum or sunken chest. Or the sternum may protrude outward like the keel of a ship, called pectus carinatum or "pigeon chest". Hence my limerick today.

Cardiac problems due to lax connective tissue may be present and can sometimes be life-threatening, including mitral valve prolapse and aortic aneurysms even during early childhood.

It says everything about the Democratic leadership: it sucks.

The only reason Biden became the nominee is because he was the strongest one against Bernie, effectively an outsider to Democrat politics. The establishment through money and attention in favor of candidate after candidate (Kamala then Warren then Beto then Buttigieg) before the simply gave up and backed Biden to prevent Bernie from becoming the nominee. Biden was far from their first choice.

It was just that there was Bernie, and then there was everyone else. And everyone else was trying to out-woke each other, so they'd get their moments in the sun, start talking about reparations or something, and then fade away. All this happened while Biden was playing that game (badly) but mostly just coasting on his image as Good Ole Joe, Obama's VP.

Yes; the media had been caterwauling about "The War" since late in '67, I think. Strange to think about the media being *against* a Dem president, but they were. Protests were cropping up -- though things did not get very bad on that front until later in '68.

It was the first election I ever cared about. The perceived wisdom was that Nixon would end the war, that Humphrey or any Dem would continue LBJ's policies and even escalate it. And I'd be eligible for the draft in about three more years. I did not want to get shot at.

260 Updates! I have updates!

For those with functional memory.. We have moved in to our new house. Got everything transferred about a month ago and have settled in quite well. We downsized substantially and got rid of a lot of stuff. We are really happy with the new house.
The demo crew is out there cheerfully demolishing the old house. We knew it was "abandon ship" bad but it was far worse than we realized. It would appear that the porch and the floor jacks under the living room and are what is keeping that old house upright.
Hubbymayhem has been diagnosed as diabetic. Serious changes in diet under way. Meds are working. Any prayers for avoiding insulin dependent would be appreciated.
Pax the cat got injured last week. She has a broken tail. Very difficult to walk. She is improving but it's gonna be a process and cats don't do what one insists they do to heal.
My aunt D passed away on Thanksgiving day and my last surviving aunt R is suffering from dementia. She fell and broke a vertebra and snapped her thumb in half. Prayers for healing for aunt R gratefully accepted.

261 I'm not as apt to accepting the painting as one of innocence with the artist having the name Miklos. However, Web Gallery of Art regarding Barabas, Miklós (b. 1810, Kézdimárkosfalva, d. 1898, Budapest) & Pigeon Post writes, in part:

"What note is a gentleman supposed to write when he is sending a pair of pigeons to a young lady? ... 'Allow me to take the liberty of sending you, dear lady, a pair of doves as a present ... When watching them play, think of your faithful admirer." This is what the Home Secretary of Pest-Buda in the year 1832 suggested to the gentlemen.

The picture shows the home of a daughter of a good family. Her charming face and carriage are typical of the ideals of the last century: she is the symbol of innocence and protection. The pigeon makes the impression of innocence stronger and lets us know that secret emotions will soon wing away out of the cage of the bierdermeier room: a wing of the pigeon indicates that the bird is ready to fly."

The artist was skilled and the painting pretty but I'd pass hanging it. Thanks.

Most comments sections are. So are text messages. It's faster, and input speed is limited by the keyboard, especially on mobile devices. It's also smaller, which used to matter a lot more when you were charged by the minute or by the kilobyte and some of it is carry-on from that.

Some abbreviation complexes are fairly clannish - ours is an example of one such - and some are very open - like the common abbreviations used in texting - but they're more or less universal.

292 Most striking case of Marfan s. I ever saw was a one-day-old boy (C.R.) I was asked to evaluate. My first look at him he was in a hospital crib swaddled in a blanket. His hand was clutching the edge of the blanket and I swear his fingers were two inches long. I did a double take. He had severe mitral valve regurgitation with valve leaflets that bowed like a spinnaker and a markedly dilated aortic root. He had open heart surgery at a very young age. As he got up to 4 or 5 years old his biggest complaint was that adults expected him to act like an 8 or 9 year old because he towered head and shoulders over his KG classmates.

Hm. I'm borderline, my A1C was at 6.5 which is considered the crossover point from pre-D. to D. itself. But that is an average of what my blood sugar was for the three previous months. Maybe I just had a spike right when they took the blood sample. My dr. did not give me an Rx yet, just discussed exercise, which I already do, and change in diet, which I have implemented.

We'll see what is up next month.

Yeah, but at least I wouldn't be tramping through a steamy jungle, and would be eating pretty well. Besides, to my teen mind, a submarine was the closest thing we had (and still have) to a starship. It's an enclosed powered vessel traveling through a hostile and lethal environment; a breach would kill you; but you'd be pretty comfortable unless that happened.
