Tech News

  • How come tech founders don't give a crap about sustainability. (Tech Crunch)

Because nobody does. It's almost entirely a grift. And if the secondary grift interferes with the primary grift, out it goes.

  • The weirdest bug I've seen yet. (Gusto)

Not me, but the person writing the blog.

Tracking down why the company's internal customer support application would crash Chrome... Sometimes.

  • ASRock has a new mini-ITX Ryzen server motherboard. (Serve the Home)

With four memory slots, dual 10Gb Ethernet ports, and remote management.

Awesome. Sounds perfect for my little NAS cases. How many SATA ports does it have?

    Oh.

    Zero.

  • Yes, Virginia, you can have too many cores. (Tom's Hardware)

Ampere's new Arm-based server CPUs have 192 cores. And you can put two of them on a motherboard.

Only problem is the Linux Arm kernel supports a maximum of 256 cores, so with two of these chips it just won't boot.

In fact, the smallest model of these chips has 136 cores, so any two-socket server will refuse to boot under Linux.

4 Pixy, this tech question came in at the bottom of yesterday's tech thread:

209 Daughter turns sixteen this Christmas season.

Finally going to buy her a phone. Retire the (no-cell-service) iPad she has been using, inherited, that is six years old. And replace the Mac laptop, also inherited, that is also about six years old and starting to act hinky.

What do I buy on a $3,000 budget Pixie? We use Total Wireless. Let me know, thanks.

(This is not a normal year - she made many sacrifices so that we could move both grandmas into our home, and has worked & saved money to buy herself a car next summer).

If she's not a computer person and just needs it for studying and web stuff, a MacBook Air is good. Small, light, good battery life, great screen.

Just don't buy the entry level model. Get at least 16GB RAM and 512GB storage, because it can't be upgraded. 24GB and 1TB would be better to make sure it lasts.

The MacBook Pro is more powerful but will quickly eat into your budget.

For the phone, the iPhone 13 and 14 aren't much cheaper than the 15 ($599 / $699 / $799) so whichever one she likes.

35 Good morning/evening Horde!

I can't stay long, I have to get to work (you're welcome Miklos).

To the first point in Tech news, I just sat through the most awful presentation a few days ago by Allianz's "Chief of IT Sustainability." He had nearly zero to say about IT sustainability, he claimed he was "An activist in a suit," and spent a half-hour haranguing (evidence-free, of course) about what Kevin Downy, Jr calls "Klymatte chain-je" and reasons legislation must be passed to force people to comply with the usual claptrap because clearly individuals cannot solve "Large problems" like this.

He went in just a few years from himself and one other to running a team of over 300 people in Allianz.

It might be worth looking at bearish options or shorting Allianz (I am NOT offering financial advice, just an opinion). Allianz looks about as serious as Disney at preserving shareholder value.

"Not the least hard thing to bear when they go from us, these quiet friends, is that they carry away with them so many years of our own lives. How come tech founders don't give a crap about sustainability. (Tech Crunch)

Scouts some years back introduced a Sustainability merit badge as a "co-equal" badge paired with the Environmental Science merit badge. Both badges are on the list of merit badges required to earn Eagle Scout rank, but only one of them need be earned. That said, Environmental Science, which was in place first, has consistently kicked Sustainability's butt in its numbers earned each year.

I have heard it said the the Girl Scout program was big at emphasizing sustainability, and moe so than Scouts BSA. Sustaining their cookie sales, maybe, but not much else.

Meteorological winter doesn't always apply to some locations in North America but for my area of SE PA it fits. The epicenter of our winter nastiness is always early January. The little ditty I learned from my grandparents was, 'As the days begin to lengthen, the cold begins to strengthen.'

85 Amazon isn't alone in this problem. The mail man delivers mail for other people here several times each week, and if the mail is for house nearby, I then redeliver. But every now and again I get mail for people quite a ways away and I take it to the PO and show them. They look very concerned but nothing seems to change. Weird.

218 I wanted to take a look at that "Downloader" browser mentioned in the Arstechnica article, so brought up the Google Play store and started looking for "Downloader by AFTVnews". Nothing. Several search variants later, still nothing.

Then I used Chrome, and typed in the direct URL to the app linked from the Arstechnica article. There it told me that app was incompatible with my device (a Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 running Android 13 is incompatible? Seriously?)

Starting to wonder if Google is still yanking this software author's chain...
