Bill Gates and Ted Turner are both obsessed with decreasing population, yet they are also buying up the farmland used to produce food that sustains the population. I’ve been wanting to write about this for a while, but I don’t have a thesis, or a recommendation, or even a “principled conservative” argument to make. But I don’t like it, and it scares me. Frankly, I wish they would spend their wealth on yachts and mansions and maintaining expensive wives, rather than using it for “good causes.” Bill Gates responds to skepticism about him owning 275,000 acres of farmland: 'There isn't some grand scheme involved' [Business Insider – 01/15/2023]Gates responded: "I own less than 1/4000 of the farmland in the US. I have invested in these farms to make them more productive and create more jobs. There isn't some grand scheme involved - in fact all these decisions are made by a professional investment team."Bill Gates is the biggest private owner of farmland in the United States. Why? [The Guardian – 4/05/2021] The gun and the whip may not accompany land acquisitions this time around. But billionaire class assertions that they are philosopher kings and climate-conscious investors who know better than the original caretakers are little more than ruses for what amounts to a 21st century land grab – with big payouts in a for-profit economy seeking “green” solutions.Ted Turner too. The billionaire media mogul Ted Turner epitomizes such disparities. He owns 2m acres and has the world’s largest privately owned buffalo herd. What are your thoughts? If it gets to the point where their ownership matters, they will effectively no longer own the land. Short of them putting out armed guards to prevent people from growing food there the land will be farmed. And if we have gotten to the point where they'll hire someone to prevent people from growing needed food... well, a lot of people are going to die from violence before the starvation gets them. It'll just make the land owned by non-lunatics that much more desirable, thereby incentivizing non-lunatics to buy up farmland and actually farm it responsibly and productively. We're already paying farmers not to farm. And when they do farm, they grow a stupid excess of corn only to be digested into biofuel that nobody needs nor wants. So we're probably not going to starve while they're sinking their billions into a nonsensical fantasy. And I won't cry if a bunch of idiot billionaires squander their billions. ++++ The restriction in property ownership that I support is - depending on who and when - restrictions on non-citizen (or non-permanent-alien) owners. I don't think foreigners should be forbidden from owning property in the US, but I probably would support some kind of quota system or limits for foreigners from enemy powers or major rivals. For the domestic variety, no - even if they're appalling bastards like these. I do think, however, that there need to be at the general level some kind of auditing to ensure they're not doing things like buying the tax assessor's office or the inspections office or whatnot. I strongly suspect a lot of these mega land owners are running very similarly to how Disney controlled Reedy Creek - just without the charter or paper trail. But watching billionaires that got mega-rich on paper via financial bailouts and manipulations, turn their paper wealth into real stuff (like land, housing, political power), is a bit irritating. My "belief" is the people should own the land, and the means of production. But a question is how to keep a few from owning too much and then putting the "slaves" at work for them -- And then importing a more complaint slave class to serve them, against the wishes of what was a burgeoning middle class. All land must be owned by a single person, who is ultimately liable for everything that goes on on that land. If they want to lease it out to a corporation to use for office space, housing, farming, whatever, cool, but there has to be one point at the end of the chain of liability who is "on the hook". Land 'scandals' are a continuing theme in US history, throwing up ethical stumbling blocks to every generation in its own fashion. Shay's may have been sidelong, but the great upheaval of GWashington's administration was the Ohio land debacle, in which government-approved middlemen sold a great deal of the territory twice, and managed to lose the entire U.S. Army. Both tribes and Revolutionary veterans got dispossessed. But, the government had assumed states' war debts as a condition of the Constitution, and that was that.
The Louisiana Purchase just was not foreseen by the framers. In Europe, government master ownership was a holdover from pre-feudal systems. Then two-thirds of the country was dropped into the lap of unwitting federal managers, and it's still a hot potato. LONDON, Jan 26 2018 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - The world's farmers took one step closer to growing "super crops" and breeding higher-yielding dairy cows as Bill Gates, one of the world's richest men, and Britain announced funding for innovative agricultural projects in Scotland on Friday.
Research that could lead to cows producing more milk, chickens laying better-quality eggs and crops being able to withstand droughts or disease received a funding injection of about $174 million from Britain's Department for International Development and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. . . The Gates Foundation will invest $40 million in projects to develop livestock vaccines and make them accessible to the poorest small-scale farmers across Africa and South Asia through the Global Alliance for Livestock Veterinary Medicines, a public-private partnership based in Edinburgh. Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at December 04, 2023 11:16 AM (FCs/J) Same thing happened with regard to the West after the Mexican American war. Almost all of the land initially became Territories with Title held by the Federal Government. While those territories became States eventually, Title was never transferred to any of the land (except that which had been sold off privately) Hence the situation today where the Fed's own a great majority of the land in the West. What if that civilian population already largely supports Hamas. Never a student of history, does Austin even know the same tactics being used now are what we used (for one example) in WW II against the Nazis and their supporters? They control equities, property, pharmaceuticals, distribution of goods and services, etc. Trust them? ha. I often wonder if the US is so invested in Ukraine for land more than anything else. Same report:
Self-reflection is the key to self-improvement. It seems that, conveniently, the RCID abstained from such a necessary exercise during its 55 years of existence. What follows then is the first substantive independent audit of an entity that fueled the rise and shielded the dominance of a company at the expense of the public good. Its revelations are, simply put, shocking. The case of Disney in Central Florida must be a blaring national wakeup call to citizens and elected officials about the problems inherent in creating special districts with the attributes that the RCID possessed: most especially, that complete and unaccountable governmental power was handed over to a private corporation, transforming a democratic institution into a private corporate monopoly. The lawyers - the state's, the district's, the former district's, Disney's, non-Disney landowners in the district, etc. - are likely salivating. " and most family farms that survive are incorporated now as well. "
Mostly so they can pass it on to the next generation. Economies of scale can work in farming, but smaller farms might wisely utilize acres that BigFarm would not find profitable enough. Small farmers do grain and cattle and also maintain some natural habitat ... BigCorp (and a lot of big farmers) want Iowa to be one big cornfield. imo the small farm communities die when too few farmers own most of the land, but in the past decades most of the kids seem to want the BigCity lights, and often more professional jobs. I should have said the people INDIVIDUALLY (not collectively) should own the land and means of production, but I don't know the Ukraine 30's reference, except Russia stole their food and starved them. --- I think you're confusing "conservative" with free market purism. Conservatism is simply the resistance to change what seems to work, for the risks involved in changing it. And Bill Gates owning less farm land seems to work. And giving a large chunk of farmland over to population reductionists seems to be not such a good idea. Highly concentrated ownership of farm land reeks of feudalism or in more modern terms Soviet collective farms. Those worked out well if I recall correctly. In general widely distributed ownership of any sector of the economy generally leads to people or entities acting in their best interests which not remarkably generally aligns with the wider population's needs and interests. Some sectors by necessity, say oil production, have to operate at scale but even there with sufficient competition the market tends to check their economic power. Remove that ownership distribution and the economy collapses into a state where governments or oligarchs distort free markets and throttle innovation and the broader well being.
