THE MORNING RANT: Should We Be Concerned About Anti-Humanity Oligarchs Buying Up So Much US Farmland?

Should we be concerned about super-wealthy, left-wing oligarchs with a messianic obsession about climate buying up so much US farmland?

Bill Gates and Ted Turner are both obsessed with decreasing population, yet they are also buying up the farmland used to produce food that sustains the population.

I’ve been wanting to write about this for a while, but I don’t have a thesis, or a recommendation, or even a “principled conservative” argument to make. But I don’t like it, and it scares me. Frankly, I wish they would spend their wealth on yachts and mansions and maintaining expensive wives, rather than using it for “good causes.”

The restriction in property ownership that I support is - depending on who and when - restrictions on non-citizen (or non-permanent-alien) owners. I don't think foreigners should be forbidden from owning property in the US, but I probably would support some kind of quota system or limits for foreigners from enemy powers or major rivals.

For the domestic variety, no - even if they're appalling bastards like these. I do think, however, that there need to be at the general level some kind of auditing to ensure they're not doing things like buying the tax assessor's office or the inspections office or whatnot. I strongly suspect a lot of these mega land owners are running very similarly to how Disney controlled Reedy Creek - just without the charter or paper trail.

oh i agree, and most family farms that survive are incorporated now as well. and it's not so much the agricultural corps that are involved, but i've seen some reports on the chinese companies, and blackrock types that are buing tons of land and that's where i pause.

All land must be owned by a single person, who is ultimately liable for everything that goes on on that land. If they want to lease it out to a corporation to use for office space, housing, farming, whatever, cool, but there has to be one point at the end of the chain of liability who is "on the hook".

Same thing happened with regard to the West after the Mexican American war. Almost all of the land initially became Territories with Title held by the Federal Government. While those territories became States eventually, Title was never transferred to any of the land (except that which had been sold off privately) Hence the situation today where the Fed's own a great majority of the land in the West.

Texas is one of the few states west of the Mississippi with almost no Federal Land Ownership, because it was it's own country first.

Economies of scale can work in farming, but smaller farms might wisely utilize acres that BigFarm would not find profitable enough. Small farmers do grain and cattle and also maintain some natural habitat ... BigCorp (and a lot of big farmers) want Iowa to be one big cornfield.

imo the small farm communities die when too few farmers own most of the land, but in the past decades most of the kids seem to want the BigCity lights, and often more professional jobs.

I don't know about other states but California gives huge discounts on property tax if you put your ranch in the Williamson Act. In exchange for cheaper taxes you promise not to develop the land. You renew it every 10 years. If you sell your ranch and take it out of the program, someone has to pay those taxes. We also call it the Ag preserve.
I bet other states have a similar programs.

I don't know if Gates et alia actually realize this, but they are setting themselves up to be the kings & magistrates when everything else collapses.

338 they claim Gates is the largest landowner with 275k acres, but later say Turner owns 2 million, no mention that the Teachers union is even bigger with more than 3 Million acres owned, and even more under their management. Teachers Unions are the largest grape/winery growers in America. They also hold assets in 90 countries, are the second largest property management corporation in the world, and the largest ag land manager in the world..
Until 1997 the Teachers Unions, Fortune 100 ranked, $TRILLION$ investment retirement funds Corporation(TIAA) was totally Tax exempt...now they treated as a "Non-Profit"(which makes one wonder what effect that has upon their property tax liabilities/rates...the taxes that fund the schools)

The rich Romans abandoned Rome and moved to the “suburbs” of France, England, etc. They made peace with the Germans, intermarried, became Christians and generally laid the framework that became the European nobility. Rich people today are no different. Like the Romans who helped in their decline, Gates and others are ruining the world. And making sure that THEY will be just fine in the New World Order.
