The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“Not everybody is doing what they promised to do. And needless to say, that’s a problem and we need to have accountability at this COP, for that lack of follow-through by some,” John F. Kerry

Quote II

“I don’t think [you] will be able to help solve the climate problem by pointing fingers or contributing to the polarisation and the divide that is already happening in the world. Show me the solutions. Stop the pointing of fingers. Stop it, The president of Cop28, Sultan Al Jaber

Quote III

”We as gay conservatives wholly reject that. And it doesn’t mean we have to stop advocating for basic rights for trans individuals, but we’re never going to go down the lunacy road that blurs the lines between the immutable fact, and importance, of gender in society, that the left is so desperately trying to destroy.”
Charles Moran, President of the Log Cabin Republicans

Quote IV

"There is no evidence to suggest that ski masks cause or encourage violent crime. If you'd like to address violent crime, I'd suggest housing, food assistance, child-care, things like that" Solomon Furious Worlds, an attorney with the Pennsylvania ACLU

Quote V

"I think I feel the people I owe a debt and an apology to is the academic community and to the students and the families that sacrifice and work really hard to get to where they are going legitimately." Felicity Huffman

Quite frankly Your Honor I don't give a rat's ass about your Christmas tree plans.

Michigan Muslim Mayor Says He’s ‘Not in the Mood’ for Christmas if Bombs Are Falling in Gaza.
Dearborn mayor Abdullah Hammoud said residents – including himself – were “not in the mood” at this year’s city Christmas tree lighting, adding “Not when bombs are dropping in Gaza.” The Muslim mayor claimed growing concerns about Islamophobia were also to blame for the unusually somber event.

Your "Palestinian" brethren would be better off espousing Christian principals.

When it comes to ICE vehicles, there are only 2 types of transmissions. One would think car thieves would be up on the basics, especially high end vehicles.

Violent Car Thieves Thwarted Because They Couldn’t Drive a Manual Porsche
The carjackers stalled the car twice before giving up and fleeing the scene.

I'm sure you've all seen the boomer Facebook memes of a manual shift knob and a caption that goes something like this: "Millennial anti-theft device." Yes, they're cringy and of course, many Millennials know how to drive stick. However, broken clocks are right twice a day, aren't they? While we don't know if the violent car thieves who recently tried to rob a man in Bethesda, Maryland were Millennials, we do know that the owner's manual transmission did indeed prevent theft.

Totally Not A Psychopath
Meet Joshua James Pinquet of Florida.

Joshua was working as an inmate transport company, and he decided he didn’t want to work for the place anymore. So, he took his job and shoved it… while driving through North Carolina with inmates inside the vehicle.

An Orlando man was arrested after he drove a van full of prison inmates off-course and refused to stop while traveling in North Carolina, deputies said.

On Tuesday, around 9 a.m., deputies received a call to be on the lookout for an inmate transport van traveling on I-40 in Statesville, North Carolina.

There is more than one with charity with the same name but different spelling? Go figure......

That Kars4Kids Charity With the Bad Jingle Is Fighting a $10M Legal Battle Over Its Name

NJ-based Kars4Kids was ordered to pay Texas-based Cars for Kids $10.6 million for trademark infringement. Now, it’s appealing the decision.

here's a chance none of us ever have to hear the Kars4Kids jingle ever again. If you know it, you know how awful of an earworm it is. Every time I'd see the commercial on ESPN, I'd feel like I was in Edgar Allen Poe's Tell-Tale Heart for the rest of the day, walking around my house loudly asking if my family members could also hear the infernal racket. However, blissful relief just might be on the horizon, as Kars4Kids has been in a trademark infringement battle with the similarly named Cars for Kids charity for years.

In 2019, the District Court of New Jersey settled a trademark infringement dispute between the Garden State-based Kars4Kids charity and the Texas-based America Can! Cars for Kids charity. Both sell donated cars and use the money to help kids in need. During the dispute, the courts ultimately determined that Kars4Kids willfully infringed on Cars for Kids' trademark in Texas, and the former (that's "Kars" with a "K!") was forced to pay the latter $10.6 million in damages. That penalty was later reduced to $7.8 million this past January. The court also deemed at the time that Cars for Kids had the rights to use "Cars for Kids" in its marketing. Now, though, Kars4Kids is filing an appeal to the 2019 court decision.

That is an incredible amount of used cars.

If the science is settled, why do researchers continue to make scientific breakthroughs?

Medical Marvel: Human Cells Transformed Into Tiny Biological Robots

The multicellular bots move around and help heal “wounds” created in cultured neurons.

Researchers at Tufts University and Harvard University’s Wyss Institute have created tiny biological robots that they call Anthrobots from human tracheal cells that can move across a surface and have been found to encourage the growth of neurons across a region of damage in a lab dish.

The multicellular robots, ranging in size from the width of a human hair to the point of a sharpened pencil, were made to self-assemble and shown to have a remarkable healing effect on other cells. The discovery is a starting point for the researchers’ vision to use patient-derived biobots as new therapeutic tools for regeneration, healing, and treatment of disease.

Forgive and forget? I don't think so.

Susan Sarandon Apologizes After Pro-Palestinian Rally Comments: ‘Phrasing Was a Terrible Mistake’
The actress issued a statement following her comments amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war

Susan Sarandon has issued an apology after saying at a pro-Palestine rally in November that people feeling afraid of being Jewish at this time were “getting a taste of what it feels like to be a Muslim in this country, so often subjected to violence”

“This phrasing was a terrible mistake,” she wrote in a statement shared to Instagram Friday night, “as it implies that until recently Jews have been strangers to persecution, when the opposite is true.”

“As we all know, from centuries of oppression and genocide in Europe, to the Tree of Life shooting in Pittsburgh, PA, Jews have long been familiar with discrimination and religious violence which continues to this day,” she continued, adding, “I deeply regret diminishing this reality and hurting people with this comment. It was my intent to show solidarity in the struggle against bigotry of all kinds, and I am sorry I failed to do so.”

She's a dried up old Has Been. Her hair color is fake, so is her apology.

RIP Rocker Chad Allan.

Chad Allan, a founding member of ‘The Guess Who’, a band that produced such hits as ‘American Woman’, ‘Laughing’, and ‘These Eyes’, has reportedly died at the age of 80. Allan also played a role in the success of the classic rock band Bachman Turner Overdrive, a band that had hits like ‘Takin’ Care of Business’ and ‘Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet’.

There is the right way to ask for a raise. Then there is the Genius Award way.

BALTIMORE (WBFF) — A new report by Baltimore's Office of the Inspector General revealed that a worker in the Department of Public Works created a fake job offer to try to get a raise at their current job.

According to the report, the department was interested in matching the offer from another government agency to keep the employee. But when the Department of Public Works contacted the other government agency about the offer, that agency told DPW that the offer appeared fake, wrote Inspector General Isabel Cumming in her report.

The Sunday Overnight Open Thread is the kinder & gentler ONT. The homeowner said "Pretty Please!" Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Home Intruder Allegedly Ignores Homeowner's Warning - The Next Thing He Hears Is a Gunshot

It’s often said, somewhat erroneously, that a good guy with a gun is the surest way to defeat a bad guy with a gun.

It isn’t that there’s anything wrong with this logic, mind you. In fact, it’s more than sound.

The error, instead, is that the statement isn’t inclusive enough: A good guy with a gun is the surest way to defeat a bad guy, full stop.

40 Poor Susan Sarandan, she never had a personal opinion in her life, she just said the appropriate, right things. Until now when it had consequences by other people who could make their displeasure stick and burn.

I suspect she has no idea what just happened and must be in a very scary world, she didn't understand why she had the opinions she expressed, only that she was supposed to give them to everyone.

She would have been better off having her own opinion and sticking to it.

You peasants, on the other hand, are only doing trivial mundane tasks like buying groceries to feed your families or trying to get to and from work, so you don't need or merit reliable independent transportation.

Just seems wrong to me to have the city say "no ski masks in public" Maybe "no ski masks inside any public building or public transport" But if some dood is walking down the street in a ski mask when its cold out I'll judge the risk level by watching his hands. And if it's mild I don't think the gub'mint should take away the publics' early warning signal if the criminal is dumb enough to stick with ski mask instead of surgical mask and hoodie.

I’d never be in favor of the persecution of Jews. But what I am in favor of is breaking their permanent and absurd victim status that allows them to do horrible crimes in plain sight. It’s why I hammer the Holocaust and their insane justifications for the war and financial crimes. Plenty of Jews not doing crimes, and persecuting a demographic for the crimes of a few is evil. But…the Jewish identity being a shield for crime should be permanently ended. You didn’t have to make porn because of the “Holocaust” it’s so fucking tedious.

159 My friend had a 79 Super Beetle in my garage for several years. After some prodding, he contacted Cars for Kids. The tow truck never showed, so he left me the title and I contacted a disabled vets group. Guy called me thirty minutes before he arrived, and the pull out was smooth as a gravy sandwich. I think my friend was not all in on letting his midlife crisis go, but he did get a nice $1800 write off and I got my garage back, so it all worked out on the end..

170 I got my "outside Studebaker" started and moved into the shop today. Initially, it started right up, and I said to myself, "Hey, I got this in the bag." Then it quit. And would not run, except if I sprayed brake cleaner in the carb. Added fuel to the tank. No joy. Checked the electric fuel pump; it was pumping OK. Took the carb off, and opened it up. All OK. Put the carb back on. It started up, ran for half a minute, and quit, same as before. Turned out the old Wix fuel filter had come apart inside, and was shedding debris to block the fuel inlet to the carb. New fuel filter, new hoses. It started up, and ran well enough for me to drive it in the shop. Win!

But the Rotary Knob selector is a major thing in all of Ford's trucks (when equipped with automatic transmission). Same with "Ram" (MOPAR). Not sure about Chebby/GMC.

Similarly, I'm not sure which cars might also be so equipped.

My boss' 2020 Expedition Max is powered by the 3.5L Twin Turbo Eco-Max engine, spinning through a TEN speed automatic transmission.

Some engineering, there. You really never feel it shift, but it's always in the right RPM range for the job at hand.

What you have now are Gazans. They are a glorified street gang. Nothing more. Let us stop the pretense of calling them Palistinians, because that people had any claims of legitimacy stripped away by their grifting, self-serving leader, whose death continues to bring me no small amount of joy.

246 The Varsity blues scandal is baffling to me. If your kid couldn't get into a good school on their own merits, what were they going to do once you got them in by cheating? Suddenly become leading scholars of their generation? It's kind of like that line in 'Ghostbusters': "I've been in the private sector. They expect results."

One thing I've noticed is that many of the parents involved don't have serious educational attainment themselves. Huffman was born into wealth and became a professional theater kid at the first opportunity out of high school. Lori Loughlin (who was born roughly simultaneously to me but at opposite ends of the country) started acting in her teens. Her fashion mogul husband lied to his parents and spent his tuition money to launch his hugely successful business.

do these highly successful people have an inferiority complex about their educations? Is that pushing them into this path. Sadly, Loughlin's daughter was already making well into the six figures as an influencer before the scandal broke and lost all of her sponsors. She could have made millions in her youth and pursued academics later if it became of interest.

Speaks tragic volumes of the disconnect between parent and child. Mom was desperate to be part of her daughter's success story after years of outsourcing her role to nannies. I understand they've since reconciled, but that relationship was never normal or functional.

Little went to a private college in Florida. The admissions director held the same job at Stanford. Loved the job except for the annual denials he had to issue to students who had every life experience and credential to rule the world. Places like Stanford brag to their brethren schools about the percentage of applications they deny:

"We deny 97.6 percent of our applications."

"Oh yeah? Well, we deny 98.2 per cent!"

The guy would field calls from very connected parents threatening to ruin him personally over the denial, and he agreed that these young people had the creds to have every door open to them, because these are the kind of young minds that would benefit society in the long run.

292 The big Mercury Turnpike Cruiser also had push-button shift. And PRNDL vs PNDLR isn't quite accurate in the article, since International continued to use the "Studebaker" pattern after 1964, and the government was known to obtain vehicles from them.

But, the push button was just a way of actuating an automatic. There were other totally different transmissions -- the Wilson Pre-Selector, several versions of the Model T planetary (I've had them, on IH and Gravely tractors), and now the variable ratio CV. There were also several fluid links to augment or replace the clutch before the one we're used to now, and a vacuum-actuated system used by Buick and Mercedes. This doesn't count other variables like the worm-drive Schact-LeBlond my dad learned on, or, lest we forget, the Laycock-deNormanville electric overdrive unit.

Also, in the Trail 70 MiniBike of early '70s renown.

You did have to manually shift gears. But you didn't need to manipulate a clutch.

The Trail 90/110, also had a Dual Range transmission. Four primary ratios, shift from L to H range, and there's four different ratios.

You did have to have the gearbox in Neutral though, to effect the change between gear ranges.

Fun Times!

I remember a great many Jap bikes of that era.

One outstanding aspect of the Honda bikes of those times.

Probably the best factory paint on any mass market motorcycles, of all time.

I exclude the post AMF Harleys from this, as soon into the '80s, a lot of their paint was, though "stock", Custom to Order. They might've made 19,000 Road Kings that year, but only XXX were the Phantom Grey Fade with Red pinstriping (or, you describe any other)...

Honda's 1970s paint was usually TWO color choices per model year, lotsa two tone jobs, but just simply PERFECT execution, every time. You could look Light Years Deep into some of those finishes, then.

310 Julian's auction just sold Zappa's first purchased guitar. He used it on the first few Mother's records.

I was legitimately considering putting a bid in for it when it was hovering around $20k, but at the last minutes it blew to over $60k.

There was a lot of random stuff sold, including a Captain Beefheart drawing, that looked like a 3 year old did it, that sold for over $30k despite being estimated for $2k.

There's an auction next week with Dusty Hill's bass collection that Id love to find something in to buy (his fuzzy bass from Legs, and a version he used in stage, are both up for sale.

When they auctioned off a few of Alex Lifeson's guitars I would have gave my left nut for that white ES-355. I entertained the idea of selling off some guitars. That lasted for maybe 2 seconds and I thought who the hell am I kidding that sucker will go beyond stooopid. Yeah, $385,000 stupid. weeeeee

It is literally a neighborhood watch patrol. Since implemented a bit over a month ago, break-ins are extremely rare.

There have been occasional early hour sightings of cars/people which should not be here. Calls with details are conveyed directly to the police to handle them.

We've also managed to break up a few romantic evenings in parked cars. Nothing like beam flashlights coming around both sides of a car to do that!

320 Biden's Dog.

What are the penalties for getting caught with an OOPSIE AR-15/M-16/M-4?

Would it be at all worth it there, to acquire something .. by any means?

Asking because of the "Better Tried by Twelve than Carried by Six", eithos, here.

Dammit R13, you are making me do math, isn't that against the rooles?

In 1973 I went collidge and turned 18 in Oct, I could legally drink beer and wine then, not hard likker.

I then had a summer job in Rockford, worked 4-12 painting in a factory. So when we got off we raced to S Beloit where they were open till 2.

I recall thinking $1 for a draft beer seemed pricey there. At the time I worked at a college bar and drafts were 25 cents during happy hour, 75 cents regular.

Those were the days my friends, we thought they'd never end...
