Double Standard! Thy Name Is...Everyone!
One of the tenets of the rabid Jew-hate that is currently masquerading as a peace movement across the globe is the idea that Israel is uniquely brutal in its conduct of its war against Hamas in Gaza.
The facts show a slightly different reality, as demonstrated by the hundreds of thousands of civilians who have been killed or driven out of their homes in Syria, Sudan, Yemen, and Lebanon. The UN reported in 2021 that more than 350,000 Syrians had been killed since 2014, and that is probably on the low end of the estimates. And if you think that hospitals are off limits? Think again! And of course the United States has attacked hospitals that were being used as military installations, and that is entirely appropriate during the conduct of a war. US Military Admits: We Deliberately Bombed a Hospital in IraqThe U.S. military said Thursday that it intentionally bombed a hospital in Mosul, Iraq as part of its efforts to "eradicate" Islamic State (ISIS) fighters. The attack on the Al Salam hospital complex took place Wednesday at the request of Iraqi forces, with coalition aircraft using "precision-guided munitions," Air Force Col. John Dorrian, spokesperson for the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS, told reporters. He said "it's very difficult to ascertain with full and total fidelity" that there were no civilian casualties, whether in the building targeted or elsewhere within the hospital complex. ISIS fighters, Dorrian said, "were using the facility to fire heavy machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades at the Iraqi security forces in the area." The strike on the "normally protected facility" allowed the Iraqi forces "to fall back to a more defensible position," he said. The "protection of civilians," he said later in the press conference, "has been a centerpiece, a foundational element of the campaign to liberate Mosul." The military is not carrying out an investigation but rather an "assessment" of the strike, the spokesperson added. The battle to reclaim Mosul from ISIS fighters, which began in October, has left civilians, including roughly 600,000 children, trapped and facing a worsening humanitarian situation.
It is obvious that when civilians and their infrastructure are used as shields by the opposing force, that there will be casualties among the innocents. But that is a necessity of war, otherwise terrorist groups such as Hamas could operate with impunity. Is that an acceptable outcome? Of course not! It is indeed idiotic. Only by channeling anti-Western zealots such as Howard Zinn can one arrive at that conclusion. Israel is an ethical country...a moral country, and its armed forces mirror that society. The extent to which the IDF goes to minimize civilian casualties is a testament to the highest and best goals of Western culture and Judeo-Christian philosophy with regard to the sanctity of life. Notice the word "minimize." That is vital, because if Israel (or any country) fought its enemies with the goal of zero civilian casualties...they would lose.
War is cruelty. There is no use trying to reform it. The crueler it is, the sooner it will be over.-- William Tecumseh Sherman I hope that Israel has internalized Sherman's message. The efforts against Hamas and the other terror groups surrounding Israel have for the past 20 years been a testament to failure. Israel has tried to calibrate their military responses to terrorism to such a degree that they have done very little damage to their existential enemies and have merely shown them the way to defeat a hyper-moral country. The quicker Israel destroys Hamas, the fewer civilians will be killed. A fast and brutal effort will prevent Hamas from coordinating its defense, manipulating civilians to become shields against Israeli power, and rearming. Every call for a ceasefire is in reality a call to level the battlefield by giving Hamas time to reorganize. That is a recipe for more deaths, and it should be dismissed out of hand, unless Israeli planners believe that a temporary ceasefire will be productive in its search for the hostages (then it becomes a military decision). But if it is allowed to become a political decision, then Israel will be weakened by it.

William Tecumseh Sherman line is the best response to the anti war fanatics, one side doesn't just declare there will be no wars and that's it the other side says ok you won't fight we won't. So once it's started hopefully to the aggressor gets their side good and hard they can't start again.

Thinking back to say WWII, I can't remember a case of the enemy holing up in a hospital and their foes saying "oh well guess there is nothing we can do now!"
If the enemy has military units in a hospital it is a valid target. End of story. And any "civilian" deaths are on the enemy.

There is something to be said for pausing once the offensive has culminated through reaching the goals for that operational period or phase. It takes some time to run through the planning processes (assessing the new current state, developing/analyzing/selecting new courses of action, etc). Once the new set of missions are ordered, a new offensive can resume.
It would be nice if Hamas would just surrender and save everyone the trouble of rooting them out. That would take a level of moral courage they have never evinced.

Concerning cease fires, a fascinating little drama has played out over the last 24 hours. Yesterday evening, all of the Good and Proper media outlets (The WaPo, the Jerusalem Post, many others) breathlessly announced "Breaking News! 5 day cease fire in exchange for 50 hostages to be announced soon!' and the Biden Administration appeared to be pushing this hard. Hamas agreed, the Qataris agreed, and the Biden admin was putting on a full court press to try and present this to Israel as a fait accompli'.
and then this morning Netanyahu said "nobody asked us about it, no deal." Boom. It was like the Lilliputians trying to tie Gulliver down, not realizing what little power they had left.

If there is to be a ceasefire then Israel needs to insist, and it may have said this already, that before that can happen every single hostage , alive or dead, needs to be accounted for and released. Releasing hostages in dribs and drabs is untenable and unacceptable.

Hamas' great victory, of course, is the size of the pro-Hamas demonstrations across the West, which may well constrain Western decision-makers in their actions.

Read a good thread on X (there actually is some good stuff there if you can find it) on how Hamas' strategic plan depended on a huge media campaign in western media that would force Israel to back off and negotiate. They never dreamed it possible that Israel could, or would, do what they are doing right now. The insanity is that Hamas appears to have had no real defensive plans, except whining to western media about what a Big Meanie Israel would being.

Ms Lily our 20.5 pound 4 year old corgi has pooped six times since dawn.
Must be the big scoops of cooked carrots and broccoli Ms G gave her in addition to her measured kibble diet.
We see other corgis and most look fat. Ms Lily is a food hound and would overeat herself to balloon size if she could, but we control her diet. She is an athletic girl, looks like a gym rat. Muscled, toned, looks terrific when she does that confrontational stance observing the wild geese down on the beach.

There was a news story the other day that Iran had told Hamas to wait until Biden's check cleared to attack. My guess is they expected the Israelis to fold to international pressure right away, and they're on the "step 2: ???" of their plan now.

There is something to be said for pausing once the offensive has culminated through reaching the goals for that operational period or phase. It takes some time to run through the planning processes (assessing the new current state, developing/analyzing/selecting new courses of action, etc). Once the new set of missions are ordered, a new offensive can resume.

I think there's an actual power struggle going on inside the White House now. The WH on the same day had Raggedy Chucky declare that Israel can defend itself *and* sent billions of new money to Iran. After the Battle of Bull Run the Confederacy had defeated the Union forces. DC had not yet been turned into a fortress so it was lightly protected.
The Confederate forces though were in bad shape themselves. Had they managed to conduct an effective pursuit they might have found themselves with much of the Union government as prisoners and holding DC.
The Confederacy had two more opportunities after this but I think this was really where they had their best chance to win...

There is a third model which I tried to talk up (unsuccessfully) in uhhh... someplace in the early 1990s: maneuver around an opponent to make their position untenable, to take the land they occupy without wasting too much expensive ammunition. There hard part was 'persuading' people without much leadership or sense their position was untenable without having to actually go in and go to the trouble of killing them all.

When we took her to get a haircut, it was amazing how small she was. I think she sorta laid low for a while, until much of it grew back. It was part of her mystique.

It also only kinda worked. The Japanese who remained were still threats! They did not surrender. Lots of Koreans, too. And, some of the craziest and most tragic stories I've ever read are of the native populations trapped on those islands with the Japanese that had been bypassed.
There were native civilians there, the entire time. People forget those islands were inhabited for centuries, thousands of years, and WWII ended an entire Pacific maritime civilization.

Frontal assaults were continued long after (some with more disastrous results than others), and the general principle is of course, you soften the enemy with your artillery, and walk your infantry up as far as possible, by shelling just in front of them.
Obviously that doesn't work, when your artillery isn't very precise. Not only do you sometimes miss the enemy, especially if they are entrenched, but you get too far ahead of them, and the enemy pops out and picks off your infantry, or you get too far behind and.... yeesh. Dead infantry.

The HBO series, The Pacific, does a great job in showing this. Now, the interspersed some soap opera drama into the story, I guess to please the more squeamish, but they were relentless in showing the horrors of those battles, including the civilians who were caught in the middle.

I have a more simplistic answer to suggest for why Israeli Arabs aren't causing trouble. They look at their own situation & greatly prefer it to what Arabs experience elsewhere.

In the mid-90s the US forces on Okinawa did some downsizing and returned some real estate to the locals. Problem was, the land had been thoroughly bulldozed over the years and the pre-war surveys were now useless. I suspect the locals are still in litigation.

No doubt getting it wrong much of the time, which was in part, the intent by the Kremlin to keep the Americans guessing.

The 81st was 'clean-up', they went through with artillery and flamethrowers to empty or seal up the cave networks and it took MONTHS and hardly any Japanese surrendered. It was an engineering job to kill them all.
Literally, it was an engineering project to simply eradicate any human being in front of them, around them, or underneath them. The 81st blasted, burned, or immured every Japanese they could. That was his job.

After the 81st more or less finished on Peleliu they still had to ring the quarters in barbed wire and post sentries, in numerous cases they threw out food scraps laced with poison and would find dead Japanese the next day.

I also had a great-uncle, buried at Arlington. He got drafted WWII then as he came from German-speakers in Indiana got sent to translator school, and missed D-Day. For whatever reason he didn't do POW interviews he got sent out on patrol in what was supposed to be a 'quiet area', and at aged 18 got shot full of holes by an MG-42. He never fired a shot. He told me he was so frightened he pissed his pants, and with all the blood was scared to die having never had sex with a woman.
The Wermacht guys who shot him discussed whether or not he was too badly hurt to bother taking back with them as a prisoner, should they leave him to die in the cold, or just shoot him in mercy. He begged them not to shoot him in German. One guy had a relative in Ohio so they carried him a full kilometer back into German captivity where he spent the remainder of the war.

2) Marines are meant to make beach heads.... but often there is no resistance. So they drive onto the island interior rather than waiitng on Army infinite supplies of fugas.
Is there an unspoken dig at Marine command to drive on when they should wait for killing machine?
Welp, that is my thesis and I am going to stick to it.
