THE MORNING RANT: Target Revenue Plunges as it Continues to Repel Customers with Its Woke Agenda

Target is a company in crisis. Under the leadership of its super-woke CEO, Target has: Welcomed men into its women’s restrooms; Sold products for those who fetishize and groom children; Prohibited police from making arrests for shoplifting within its stores. If it was CEO Brian Cornell’s intent to destroy Target, I’m not sure what he might do differently.

The revulsion normal people feel about Target’s embrace of degeneracy is reflected in its ongoing revenue decline.

In this inflationary era, a store that simply sold the exact same number of items would show a year-over-year revenue increase due to the increased retail price of all products. But because of Target’s repellent social agenda, it managed to see an actual revenue decline of 4.2%. Q3 2023 revenue was $25.4 billion, down from $26.5 billion one year prior. The revenue decline was more than a billion dollars, as consumers voted with their wallets not to reward Target for its loathsome agenda.

Target’s same store sales were down a staggering 4.9% and its digital sales tumbled even more - down 6.0%. It’s certainly understandable that people are reluctant to click on Target’s website, for the same reason they wouldn’t want an XXX address in their browser history.

By contrast, Wal Mart just released its Q3 2023 financial reports, which showed solid revenue growth, including same store sales increasing by 4.9%.

Counter-intuitively, Target’s stock price soared upon the earnings report, and Wal-Mart’s declined. The reason was that “experts” were surprised by the results. They expected Target’s results to be even worse, and Wal-Mart’s to be even better, and those expectations had been baked into the stock prices.

Despite Target’s revenue decline, it managed to cut some costs and increase its gross margin on the goods it did sell, which pleased those who only look at bottom line profit. However, when revenue is in a downward death spiral, no amount of cost cutting can overcome the loss of dollars never received in the first place. In my life I’ve seen the death of mighty retailers such as Sears and K-Mart, and unlike Target, those retailers didn’t have contempt for middle class values like Mr. Cornell and Target do. When customers stopped shopping at Sears and K-Mart, no amount of cost cutting and other budgetary actions could save them.

In the opening paragraph, I mentioned that Target is so woke that it has embraced a pro-crime / pro-criminal position, even in its own stores.

“California Sheriff Destroys Woke Target’s Code on Arresting Shoplifters” [Outkick – 11/13/2023]

Sheriff Jim Cooper aired his grievances against Target on X, criticizing the company for preventing any arrests inside the store over the company’s worry about a P.R. nightmare.

Cooper shared that an operation to combat shoplifting at Target locations was interrupted by Target’s security advising officers that no arrests were permitted in the store, as a means to avoid negative press.

It is a special kind of evil for a company to embrace criminal activity in its stores, and to put its employees in the position of having to effectively abet the criminal activity by not allowing police to arrest the criminals.

By the way, in case you’re thinking that Target might have been chastened by its sales collapse, and that maybe Mr. Cornell might rethink his woke agenda, think again. He really, really hates half of the people in this country, and he wants you to know how much he hates you.

“Target CEO: Conservatives Upset Over Trans Merch More Dangerous to Employees Than George Floyd Riots” [Daily Wire – 11/02/2023]

Cornell told CNBC’s Squawk Box that the violence and looting witnessed during the George Floyd riots did not compare to the trans blowback.

As the Daily Wire points out, it was left-wing activists who sent bomb threats to Target when it removed some of its trans-children clothing last summer.

Seemingly running in contrast with Cornell’s assertion, stores in at least five states received bomb threats via email from an individual/individuals angry the retail chain “betrayed the LGBTQ+ community” by removing the merchandise, The Hill reported.

It might be possible for Target to save itself from the fate of Sears and K-Mart, but not with a woke leftist like Brian Cornell running it into the ground. If Target’s board of directors want to save the company, it must remove its toxic CEO.

12 Target is HQ'd here. It was started here in MN in 1969 as a spinoff mid retail to Dayton's which was like a northern version of Macy's. I know or have known many people who worked there in various forms, either in the stores or in corporate. They all say it's a shit place to work now. But Target reacted to people pointing out issues that would come up by calling them phobic bigots. 36 Interesting. I worked for K-Mart for several years and at the time Target stores were the pits of that type of retail. Of course, Target management woke up and realized changes were needed and what you have today are sleek, modern stores catering to the 15-40 year old (guessing here) female. K-Mart on the other hand never modernized, went for lower end product and ultimately were killed off by Sears. Guessing Target will survive, however they may have reached max growth and might need to close a few locations.

68 I always thought the problem with K-Mart was that they had too much old inventory on the shelves. Stuff that didn't sell last year or 2 years ago, that you didn't want, and that got in the way of finding the stuff you did want. At some point, you just go somewhere else.

not true. We have 1 dead mall and 2 dying malls in my greater metro area. The stores in the "high class" mall have been dropping out faster than they can fill spaces and the quality of stores is declining rapidly.

Usually just household goods (towels, sheets, etc.)

Where should I go now? Unfortunately, Target is far closer than the Wal-Mart or other similar type stores. But, I'm down to stop shopping at Target unless they get rid of this guy.

The CVS inside one of my local Targets is where I get my Rxs. Of course they can transfer them to another CVS. But even the one closest to me is a hassle to get to and to deal with.

In any case, I buy far less at TG than I do at WM. And after the long wait in line yesterday Sunday at WM, I may grit my teeth and skip them too.

They know that if they don't do those things, there will be riots and their stores will be emptied. Target is an urban/suburban company, and they are in deep with the woke folk and the communists who run those places. They're stuck. Their best bet at survival is probably becoming a catalogue store (like the old Service Merchandise), albeit with a modern twist. You can order online and pickup in-store, or you can walk in and order from a kiosk and wait for your order to be brought up to you and, if needed, to be escorted to a fitting room. But the policies they support - and support out of necessity because of how it has cast its political die - cannot allow for open stores with goods on shelves for browsing by customers.

Wal-Mart is woke, of course, but not so openly and they're much more sensible. They dump money into politics but don't do much with it at the retail level. It's also suburban/rural, which is a much more favorable mix crime-wise.

not true. We have 1 dead mall and 2 dying malls in my greater metro area. The stores in the "high class" mall have been dropping out faster than they can fill spaces and the quality of stores is declining rapidly.

Clothing is an outlier and clothing stores will always be around in one form or another, because people want to try things on before they buy. I'd rather buy online from Duluth Trading or its equivalent, at least for things that I know will fit properly. Suits and such are a different story.

But malls can't survive just on clothing. The anchors were always department stores - Sears, JC Penny, Macy's and then the smaller stores were a mix of clothing and other stuff. when the anchors leave, the malls are in trouble b/c the anchors are what keep the mall lucrative.

I think every metro area will have at least one functioning mall - b/c in-person shopping is still a) necessary for clothing as you say and b) a social activity.

But, I think the era of competing malls in a metro area are done. We have 3 malls still in operation (I forgot about 1), and one mall completely dead, and all 3 still in operation are dying. What will happen is 1 mall will survive and the others will die completely.

I don't think so. Target is probably finished, and woke is merely the accelerator. Target is turning the corner into the death part of the retail store cycle.

There are two ways to grow:
1. Increase same-store sales
2. Increase the number of stores

Door #2 is much, much easier - and way faster - than door #1. The downside to it is that there are only so many stores you can open. Eventually, you saturate and then you have to maintain and increase same-store sales. It is in this phase that underperorming stores tend to get closed and things get reorganized. This part of the cycle eventually results in the death of the outlet, at which time (well, before, but close to the end) it is replaced by someone just entering the "increase number of stores" part of the birth/death progression.

Woke might speed it up for Target, but Target has hit saturation and likely isn't skilled enough to survive in stability.

The mall in my small city was razed about ten years ago and replaced with an outdoor mall - a smaller number of bigger stores with common parking lots. It's doing well and there are mall-type things there - electronics, appliances, clothes, discount store, movie theater, etc. - but there are fewer total stores than in the old mall.

149 Being more of a full service site (prescription services also are/were available) with groceries, convenient parking & store pickup bought in a lot of older persons & families with children in to shop.

And CVS, the largest pharmacy US chain, bought Target's pharmacy division. It closed 244 stores between 2018 and 2020. In 2021, it announced plans to close 900 stores by 2024. 300 stores were closed in 2022, an additional 300 closings are to happen in 2023, and 300 in 2024.

BTW, some of the Target parking lots became easy pickings for criminals before C19 (SE PA). Now they, and the stores, are even more dangerous. Being Philly, DE and NJ adjacent doesn't help.

PS - The county posted billboards not to give money to panhandlers. Never had that been seen outside of the cities.

And got cow-orkers who still have not connected the dots that it is because they jacked up the pay there are fewer employees in the store so they are agitating for even more pay to cope with the extra work.

Well TBF people who work at WM aren't exactly PhDs in economics. They will never understand. Neither with any of the FIGHT FOR $15 types. If a business has $1M allocated for labor costs and the per employee cost goes up 10%, they won't increase the labor cost to $1.1M. They'll just re-allocate the $1M between fewer emplployees.

Absolutely. Target went Woke very early, and went all-in going after the woke demographic. And woke folk - especially woke women in their 30s - *love* Target. It lets feel them good about themselves because shopping there is both a virtue and class signal (they care about stupid woke shit just like me, and therefore both they and I are good; they also aren't that dirty Wal-Mart where the scum class shops, even though the stores are essentially the same).

But they're not sized or operated as a company targeted at that fairly narrow demographic, they're sized and operated as a company targeted at the general public.

The way shopping centers, and later malls, used to do in the '50s and '60s. We had a gigantic proto-Walmart local chain in the early '60s here, and there was a barber shop on the second floor and even a lunch counter where you could buy beer. They sold real Christmas trees outside every December. For a 9-10 year-old kid, it was nirvana.

And it *can* be done, at least for a while. Wal-Mart has been fairly skillful in its pursuit of survival post-saturation. For now, anyway, Target is not handling it skillfully.

Right. RazorFist's "Go broke, get woke, then croak" is a more correct order of operations in a lot of these cases.

To use a familiar example: Disney knew in 2007 that they were doomed because they'd become a brand for girls, so they were looking to get into boy-friendly things (which eventually became the Marvel and Lucasfilm acquisitions). Then "get woke" happened and turned those things into girls brands too.

Malls once had stores for men and boys: hobby stores, bookstores, pipe shops, drugstores where you could buy a razor and blades, men's clothing (good stuff, not "urban wear"). Some had a Goodyear or Firestone store on the edge of the property where you could get the oil changed while Mama was shopping, etc.

Now it's almost all for women and children.

Al Boscov (RIP) was a terrific salesman. He respected the customer. I dare anyone to go into Boscovs and come out empty handed.

214 My area had a 'factory outlet' mall decades ago, which was sort of a tourist destination. A 'regular mall' opened up literally across the street from it, and for a while both were going strong.

Then the outlet mall contracted.

Then the regular mall closed up; now the building is mostly a community college.

Now, most of the retail is in the form of a large strip mall, which got built adjacent to the previous two malls!

Basically, big box stores replaced the traditional mall model of anchors + small stores.

That was another place in malls that appealed to men, at least some of the games and gifts did. And we had one big mall in the eastern part of the city about fifty years ago which had a Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor in it, and an ice-skating rink!

I liked that mall because something about it reminded me of Heinlein's Luna City. I could imagine that this was the retail section of Luna, and if you went up a level, you'd find a spacesuit rental shop and you could go through an airlock and out onto the Moon's surface.

305 299 Where I live it's the booze. One store has by far the best prices on whiskey. The other has cheaper booze. The third has cheaper wine. And it's not even a small difference. Scotch at Store X that costs $90 is $65 at Store Y. I'll be fucked in the ass if I'll pay 28% more for the same damn scotch.

Sounds like NC. My mother's hometown was Concord. Both the county and town was dry. In the early 70s Cabarrus County realized how much taxes they were losing to Mecklenburg ABC stores and decided to authorize one in Carbarrus County. One year later Concord was able to build an entirely new High School on just the taxes from one year on the ABC store. Later, in the late 1980s Concord decided to legalize liquor by the drink. A year or two later the Charlotte 500 raceway annexed themselves to the city of Concord just to be able to sell liquor. Again, Concord had so much money falling on it it didn't know what to do with it.

They are the poors, and they lack the resources and foresight to buy holiday stuff until the day before the holiday.

Or seasonal stuff until theyre well into the season; therefore he never had to compete for sales with stores whose cutomers could afford to buy ahead.

crime. That being the case, why have arrests not been made? That is the real question.

Police could, right now, enter any store that has this policy and arrest any and all, the manager, assistant manager, security guards if any, perhaps even all the employees, as well as the CEO and top brass in the company headquarters, for aiding and abetting. This is both legal and the policeman's job. The question therefor is, why are our policeman not doing their job? If they are not, they also are aiding and abetting, and should also be arrested. Also, if the policeman's boss says don't arrest these clear criminals, the boss is also aiding and abetting.

There is an obvious way to eliminate this problem. You and all your buddies pull up to Target with trucks, go in, and clear out the store. Which has already happened at many stores.
