"But whenever there’s a snatch of talk it turns to the Kremlin mountaineer, the ten thick worms his fingers, his words like measures of weight, the huge laughing cockroaches on his top lip, the glitter of his boot-rims." I fear what's possible so, yes, I would hang this painting. Thank you.
The Virtual Russian Museum - This painting reflects both the real events of the siege of Petrograd by the forces of the White general Yudenich and the artist’s own personal memoirs: “I wanted to tell the tale of an episode from the terrible year of 1919.” The artist conveys the setting of a worker’s house and the state of its inhabitants, who stay up throughout the whole alarming night. The colour contrasts add tension to the painting. The artist employs the resolution to introduce significance into the genre scene, confirming without external pathos the stoicness of people when the hour of testing comes around: “I wanted … to convey the alarm of the historical scale of great experiences … I succeeded in loving the people depicted there.” Posted by: L - Can't make 'em love you more or hate you less at November 17, 2023 10:22 AM (GshMh) 212

Posted by: I used to have a different nic at November 17, 2023 10:45 AM (uvymP) Yeah, but just practically speaking -- at least until the robots take over, we need those types of jobs staffed. If *everyone* was able to "move up" (to what? all the fry cooks become managers? Who do they manage?), it would turn in to a bit of a pyramid scheme though, no? Like those jobs do need to be staffed, and they can't fill all shifts with high school kids. Posted by: Harry Paratestes at November 17, 2023 10:49 AM (mj0Qp) 313

I read "Red Dragon" after I saw "Manhunter", Brian Cox was perfect for Lector. I have to admit though, Mads Mikkelsen won me over as my favorite Hannibal in the show of the same name.
Posted by: Darth Randall at November 17, 2023 *** From the few episodes I saw of Hannibal, I thought Mikkelsen was a fine successor to Cox and Hopkins. I've always wondered if Thomas Harris intended Lecter to be merely a throwaway character, with no plans to appear in any other works . . . and then he saw how people reacted to the doctor's small role in the first novel. Even then, Harris must have known he had something special, though. He tells the story in past tense, but occasionally when referring to Lecter he uses present. "Dr. Lecter's eyes are maroon . . ." The other side of the coin is that it's become much more expensive just to live. Rent is atrocious for any kind of livable space. Food prices even for staples are absurd. Education is outrageous, and everyone is forced to pay for it at whatever price your municipality might demand. The entire health care and insurance sector is a complete fucking joke, and the less said the better.
Unless you're looking to go completely off-grid homestead, you just about have to rake in a comfortable middle class salary just to scrape by with all the vultures in suits sticking their hands in your pockets every hour of the day. Posted by: Warai-otoko at November 17, 2023 10:59 AM (9UlRk) 343

Interesting painting. The newspaper's name is "Krasnaya" ("Red"), and the headline says "Brotherhood" - which, in leftist parlance means lining up against the wall everyone who disagrees with them. The meager hunks of bread and cheese aren't encouraging, and the child appears nearly paralyzed with fear. The modeling of the figures is stylized, but such was the fashion of the time. The painting certainly communicates the fear of people - probably middle-class, to judge from their clothing - who are watching their world go up in flames.
