First-World Problems...

drywall screwed.jpg

No. You haven't missed most of a day. That's not modern art. That's the catastrophe of a drywall fastener pushing out of the stud. Not even 20 years old and it fails? What is this world coming to?

Ovbiously we will have to move, or maybe just torch the place and start over.

Beat it back down with a hammer hard enough to leave a dent, then spackle over. Don't try to finesse it. Beat it, beat it good.

7 Take a hammer, lightly tap it in, get joint compound and coat over, maybe 2 or 3 times, let dry between coats as it shrinks. When done sand but as wall has texture give it a coat and dab with a sponge so isn't smooth, maybe even last coat try this..

8 Love that when you use a drywall screw to fix nail pops it pulls the panel down so more pop or creates a hole with the screw head.

Might as well move to a better area soon, it's only going to get worse!

23 I finally sold my house this past week, and about a month ago signed a lease for another year on the rental I'm in now.

All year long, I've been dreading a total collapse of the housing market, fearing my house would sell below what I paid for it. I got a nice check instead.

Now, if I'm being totally selfish, I can wait through the next year, seeing if the collapse happens, and then maybe pick up a new house for well below what it's priced at now.

I'm not that much of a dick though. I mean, houses here are WAY overpriced by my calculations, so I wouldn't mind seeing a reasonable drop. My definition of reasonable, that is.

Now, there are plenty of road-killed badgers hereabouts. My cunning plan is to freeze a supply of badgers in water-filled 5 gallon buckets. I shall remove the blocks of ice with badger-filling and place them in a dispenser in the back of my vehicle.
When a tailgater annoys me, I shall drop a badger in front of them. Since they are too close to evade, they will run over the badger-block and sustain vehicular damage.
Should the police investigate, all they will find is remnants of rotting badger, stuck to the undercarriage.

1) Proper technique is to drive almost to the end of the on-ramp then stop.

2) Proper technique is to slow down to the off-ramp speed...in the left lane...then gradually move over to the right lane before exiting.

I think stud finders are a joke. Take a flashlight and hold it to the side close to the drywall. Once you find the first slight imperfection/dent you have a reference point for all the rest. If still unsure I'll take a skinny finishing nail and tap it in about an inch. If It hits resistance I'm home free. I had to hang a very heavy and $300.00 glass shower door a couple of years ago and absolutely had to be positive I was biting into the stud, so I tapped in the finishing nail and kept moving 1/2 left, then right until I caught it exactly and determined exact center of stud. DIY Stud-finder - Nail-finder.

Small very strong magnet, about 12 inches light string or floss taped to it. Swing like a pendulum flush with wall, moving around as you do it. Magnet will be drawn to nails.

Or, at night, laid out on the front passenger seat. Or in my hand. I've never found a holster other than a shoulder holster that works well in any kind of vehicle. CCW, open carry state. I've gotten funny looks during the day with a pistol laying on the passenger seat in full view but fuck them.

79 My FWP is there are chunks of interstate highway in my area with a speed limit of 80 mph for cars, 70 mph for trucks.
This works reasonably well until the trucker doing 70.5 mph decides he has to pass the truck doing 70 and swings into the left lane, in front of a half dozen cars doing 80.

80 In more useful departments, I have no idea who uses drywall nails anymore but the prouds are from driving those ring-shank nails into wet, new studs and there is no way to keep all of them from backing out. When the wood dries and shrinks, every single nail in the entire house will proud.

Good luck!

81 When they found out I was on the way, Mom and Dad had to quick furr and wall up the 25-foot cinder block square he'd laid up to be his garage, so we could have a starter house. Korea was on and there were shortages of everything. Instead of "plaster board" there was wood pulp board, pretty crummy stuff and hard to put any kind of finish on. My mother learned how to make a paint/plaster/silica sand concoction you could roll on, that would seal the pulpboard and create a hard lasting dappled surface. She did a couple of rooms and most of the ceilings with that -- while pregnant.

It really lasted. It also would chew up any furniture that touched it, and would bark your knuckles if you rubbed against the wall. I was advised I'd have to re-wall, or power sand it off. Instead I plastered it, in several coats, with the wide "medieval" trowel. It's now been under plaster for longer than it was exposed, and nothing has cracked or sagged. But if I ever have to do a spot repair, I'll have to call in museum staff.

135 I think stud finders are a joke. A little compound cures us of the deed.

Also because actual valuable coins get dumped in the machines. The machine has some internal design to catch unusual weights to catch washers and foreign currency to return to the user, so I assume it's programmed to catch valuable coins and set them aside in a separate internal chamber.

151 Guns that go for HUGE money now I do not regret and I think went to better homes? Colt Officer's models from the 1930s in .22LR and .38 Special. They were handbuilt masterpieces with original stocks and I just didn't like them.
Sold to me by a Guy, who was about to lose his house a 3-tour VN Navy SEAL facing his demons and he sold them to me for practically peanuts in his kitchen because he trusted me with them and then I sold them for equally peanuts as I didn't like them.
I made the effort, tried to like them but... eh.
Just... didn't like the way they felt.

I used to carry a can of paint stripper in my car years ago. During rush hour on the GSP, merging into the toll booth lanes was an art. A few times, some asshat with a truck or other large vehicle cut me off right at the booth. Soooo, one day, a guy tried that with a rather large pickup. His rear fender was eye level as I rolled down my window and sprayed his fender as cut in (about a foot from my window). The Jersey Way™. He was close enough where I could have cut off the tire valve on the rear tire with a pair of wire cutters I usually carried in the car. Glad I'm retired.

157 Here's a question for the Horde: we have all heard of hollowing books to store stuff like cash, jewelry, or guns. One big opening in a book is not hard to do, if you have a jigsaw. What about cutting an array of small rectangular compartments so you can sort and store small things like electronic components or tiny hardware parts?

I want a shower stall with a seat.

When I bought the house I live in now there were two showers, both with seats. One was green, one was pink. One side of the bathroom there was a gold color sink. The other side had a green sink. The toilet was so freaking massive that even Al Bundy could not complain. It, and the bidet were gold colored. The floor was some horrific design of linoleum. The vanities were homemade out of redwood by the original owner.

It took a couple of months of weekends but I tore that bath out to the studs and started all over. If there's any DIY project with the highest rate of return my guess would be bathrooms.

Truckers always wave and let me in when we hit the cones. Doing this can really improve traffic flow, but often I can't get over myself to do it since I'm usually towing a trailer with the pickup. Plus if it will be a very long time I get nervous that I might get a ticket for 'obstructing traffic.'

I saw traffic cops do this on a 3 lane interstate once. They got lined up and kept even speed across all 3 lanes and greatly improved traffic flow.
