Ugh: Film Actors Guild Ends 118 Day Strike

I was hoping this would go into the new year.

The studios had given the Film Actors Guild an ultimatum: Either settle now, or we'll just stop holding all talks until next year. They figured there was no point even bothering negotiating during the Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Years season.

So the Film Actors Guilders finally came to terms.

After a grueling 118 days on strike, SAG-AFTRA has officially reached a tentative agreement on a new three-year contract with studios, a move that is heralding the end of the 2023 actors strike.

The SAG-AFTRA TV/Theatrical Committee approved the agreement in a unanimous vote Wednesday, SAG-AFTRA announced. The strike will end at 12:01 a.m. Thursday. On Friday, the deal will go to the union's national board for approval.

The performers union announced the provisional agreement Wednesday, after about two weeks of renewed negotiations. The development came not long before a deadline of 5 p.m. that the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers had set for the union to give their answer on whether they had a deal.

The union is so far providing some details of the agreement, more of which will likely emerge in the next few days prior to the union's ratification vote. In a message to members Wednesday night, the union said the pact is valued at over $1 billion and includes pay increases higher than what other unions received this year, a "streaming participation bonus" and regulations on AI. The tentative deal also includes higher caps on health and pension funds, compensation bumps for background performers and "critical contract provisions protecting diverse communities." If the deal is ratified, the contract could soon go into effect, and if not, members would essentially send their labor negotiators back to the bargaining table with the AMPTP.

Just wanted to clarify something I said earlier this week: I have no problem with people saying "the last movie I watched was with John Wayne." The last TV show I watched was... the 1960s/1970s Mission: Impossible TV show on Pluto. It's pretty much the only TV show I watch. Well, that an Just Shoot Me from the 90s.

I have no problem with rejecting Hollywood and in fact loudly champion doing so. Even if someone wants to watch a movie or TV show, there are decades worth of stuff to watch already. No one has to watch modern "entertainment."

Years ago, Kurt Schlichter, who I almost always agree with, wrote something I thought was completely wrong: He said that conservatives needed to engage in the culture, and that included watching crap like Lena Dunham's Girls.

Absolutely not. Absolutely not. There are only so many hours in the day and the idea of wasting time watching crap you don't like just to be part of the "cultural conversation," to slightly, maybe, increase conservatives' vote share seems to me the worst possible tradeoff imaginable. If winning elections means I have to watch Lena Dunham's fat ass, then put me down for not winning elections.

But I would like to cover the fall of modern "entertainment" as a business/culture story.

That's not the same as gabbing about who is the Hottest Chris in Superhero Movies, you know. (It's Chris Hemsworth, obviously.)

I don't like being shamed about covering the fall of a woke media giant like Disney with the "I don't watch new movies" stuff, where that's used as a not-so-subtle insult to anyone who's talking about current day media. As if I'm some kind of Disney fanboy tittybaby.

And do note, I'm only talking about Disney fare, not watching it. I haven't watched anything Marvel since... Well I did see the Doctor Strange movie. And that's it over the past few years.

So do continue boycotting Hollywood. I'm boycotting it myself, pretty much.

Just let me cover Disney without not-so-covertly calling me a Silly Child for doing so.

And if you let me do that, you can say "I haven't watched a movie since John Wayne" all you like.

I just watched the Claude Raines Invisible Man. I think that's actually the last movie I watched.

So, actually, I haven't watched a movie since Claude Raines.

41 It's kind of a big deal. It's probably the only way to get to a new culture--have the old stuff collapse under its own weight. (The Egyptians took a few centuries to collapse.)

Saw "Ghost in the Shell" last night. (The Satoshi Kon original.) And two trailers.

One for "The Marvels", which doesn't look good but I felt like the trailer cutter did yeoman's work in trying to make it look like you might not hate it.

One for an A24 movie about an ordinary man who starts appearing in everyone's dreams. He's not aware of this, there's no reason why, and he doesn't do anything specific in the dreams. (Sometimes nothing, sometimes all kinds of things.) It seems be about viral fame.

The man is played by Nic Cage, who looks perfect in it. Normie Nic Cage.

So that might be something. Good trailer, anyway, which is rare!

I suspect that they did lower a lot of costs through the strikes that brought their PnL stuff in a positive light. They're essentially writing off certain projects while delaying work on others, meaning that the Q4 numbers will probably be pretty heavy as they try and restart everything.

Plus, Iger did mandate a general cost-cut across streaming content last year that was pretty substantial.

99 It basically will go on until the new year for production. They can't start anything between now and probably Jan 3rd or 4th, and who wants to pay everyone a full week for just 3 days, so let's just start the 8th.

And that's also depending on how the fight for actors, crews, and studio space goes. Who gets first dibs, shows that we're shut down or new ones?

The sooner they start, the sooner they get over with killing the industry, and ther sooner maybe smart people who don't think Brie Larson is the strongest human to ever walk the earth can take over and make better movies.

122 Just remember if you really want to screw big hollywood, be your own streaming service. There are a number of paid and free services, like PLEX, EMBY, and Jellyfin, that allow you to create your own server, and host your own videos. You can convert your DVD/BLuRays to a streaming format with programs like Handbrake (free) and AnyDVD (paid), host them on your server. Then you can use the PLEX or Jellyfin app on your ROKU, FIRE or SmartTV to access your content on your server. With a little effort you can even have your server set up for remote web access, as opposed to in house network access. My webfu isn't good enough to do that, but if you want to share your collection with remote family and friends, you could.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at November 09, 2023 12:21 PM (3Gtis)

Last year's shiddy comps. The real fun begins soon enough. Disney needs several billion in cash for the Hulu deal they signed years ago. That's why they're shopping ESPN and last I heard, they were floating the idea of selling their India operation. It will bring the needed cash, but then they won't be able to juice the subscriber numbers without the 99 cent India cricket subs.

I hate to say the walls are closing in, but eventually people will stop giving you money to piss away.

I've been genuinely surprised at how good even the trash was in the '80s.

Like "Chopping Mall". We watched it, had a few laughs, never really thought about it much afterwards. Come to watch it again and it's like, "Hey, competent camerawork. Beautiful women. Not boring or stupid bombastic. This is fun."

Or "Maniac Cop 2": I didn't even bother at the time and now I'm like "That's a hell of a car chase. Wow, that guy just destroyed a police station."

Most library systems have movies as well. Charleston's was rather robust, and I used it frequently. This little corner just outside of Charlotte is less so, and I think we're going to end up paying the fee to have a library card in the Charlotte system proper to make up for it.

But, it's free borrowing, and the selections trend towards releases in the past few years, so you're never that far behind.

247 Speaking of old shows and movies, I just started watching Gunsmoke season 7. Really enjoying it. It's the first season with the 1-hour format. Black and white. Chester era. Some really nicely dark stories. Almost Noir-esque. Not a lot of happy endings on that show, at least in season 7.

I watched it as a kid with my dad (it was his favorite show) during the Festus era, and remember getting a kick out of Festus because he was so goofy.

If you've got Hulu you should check it out. Two 6-episode seasons so far with a third due next year, so not much commitment involved.

342 In regards to: "Years ago, Kurt Schlichter, who I almost always agree with, wrote something I thought was completely wrong..."

One of the worst pieces of advice given to my mom was from David Horowitz. He came to talk at my school and was run out by loudmouth football players screaming about why they need reparations (to pay for more gold chains around their necks). We were in attendance and were disappointed in Mr. Horowitz for slinking off after half-heartedly responding to the brats. My mom sent him an email asking where I could go to get a good education not filled with leftists like my commie professor who spent his whole class pushing communist ideals and downgrading anyone who argued against such ideals. Mr. Horowitz's response? Stay in the liberal school and get a rotten education, because we have to learn to deal with liberals anyway. So, I stayed at that school and all I learned was to shut up to get along. Anyone not lock-step with the liberal viewpoint gets squashed, so just pretend that you have no viewpoint and it gets easier. Well, as long as you don't piss off your professor with a benign view that somehow insults his ego, that is.

There are quite a few series that should have called it quits for good. They tried to do spinoffs of MASH and they were horrible and cancelled pretty swiftly. I think that the MASH series went on too long - it went on much longer than the actual Korean war. Honeycutt became unwatchable and I hated his character and Hawkeye's jokes were no longer funny and were just bitter and sarcastic.

The Gamera trilogy from the 90s was also very good. There's a 4th one from that era that's more aimed at kids and isn't as good, but it ain't bad. There's a Gamera boxed set including all the films going back to the 1960s. 432 Ace - Not that my opinion matters, but keep covering the struggles or poor, poor Disney. It's not that I care about Disney, or hollywood in general. I don't. But, along with social media & education, entertainment is the most powerful opinion-shaping tool when it comes to young people and culture. I remember seeing the content of their contemporary programming when my daughter was young. All I could think was "why does every one of these shows sound like it's written in dialogue that only bitchy gay men find funny" That was the point when I realized I'd rather my kid curse like a sailor than to speak with the tone and attitude of characters on Disney TV.

I enjoy the taste of Disney's tears. Keep reminding me to fill my cup.

435 Regarding Ace's post on what media we consume, my take is that we as conservatives have some sort of scoreboard that if "media company I don't like" has bad earnings, we're "winning" the culture war.

And I do take satisfaction in seeing them earn less money, but at the end of the day, I dont think youre going to see any change in direction and there is still massive consumption of the mainstream. Politics is downstream of our culture and they are still calling the shots.

Like Elon Musk will probably lose his ass on buying Twitter, but I'm fine with that because it was still a huge win for our side to have an open platform. The financial part is secondary. I view Hollywood and the whole media complex the same way. They probably all are having to share a smaller part of the financial pie, but they are still driving the narrative.

467 So do continue boycotting Hollywood. I'm boycotting it myself, pretty much.

Just let me cover Disney without not-so-covertly calling me a Silly Child for doing so.

And if you let me do that, you can say "I haven't watched a movie since John Wayne" all you like.

++++
"I haven't watched a movie since 'X'" can be solidarity, which I hope it is. If nobody watches - and this year, nobody has watched* and the consequences have been disastrous - that's what is commonly called a "boycott" and so much the better.

* Except the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon and the Mario movie. Unalloyed successes, all three.

It wasn't an edict but a response to questions, and while he essentially tells the priests to use their own judgement and that repentance is required for baptism, yes the administration and affairs of a parish belong to the priests and bishop.

502 I watch almost no American shows anymore. I now watch mostly Korean dramas. They also include obvious messaging, but it is either for things that are completely out of the scope of American culture ("why should you give automatic deference to your "senior" just because they are a year or two older?", for example), or the same type of more or less non-political things we used to have back in the 80's (like, "don't drink and drive").
On the other hand, when Netflix money started coming in, they suddenly had a bunch of gay bromance shows, but those have more or less fallen by the wayside.

504 >>>But I would like to cover the fall of modern "entertainment" as a business/culture story.

I think the reality is between you and Kurt. No we shouldn't be watching vomit inducing Lena Dunham nudity just to have a conversation. In fact we should assiduously be NOT watching it to have whatever effect we can have on it's ratings and other revenue related metrics which we influence with our viewing choices.

We should be watching stuff that allies with our values and in a dearth the stuff that best allies with our values to create the opposite financial incentives.

Moreover we should ***care*** about the entertainment industry because its successes and failures are still bellwethers of culture and successes still influence culture (who doesn't think that Barbie didn't predict or influence what happened in Ohio?)

So ignore the status of entertainment as a cultural touchstone and rudder at your own political peril. You not watching it is nearly irrelevant to its political influence.

And not caring about it shows that you really don't want any sort of long term victory. Because the whole of society won't settle for watching John Wayne forever.
