Daily Tech News 30 October 2023

Top Story

  • Small Hadron Collider: Scientists have for the first time fired up the world's tiniest particle accelerator. (Space)

While early accelerators were much much smaller than today's giants like the Large Hadron Collider - which is an underground ring five miles across - this new device, called a nanophotonic electron accelerator, or NEA, reverses the trend entirely.

It's the size of a dime.

The electrons it produces have a millionth of the energy of the particles in the LHC, and there are far fewer of them, so the overall beam energy is tiny.

What it does allow you to do though is produce a small and perfectly focused beam of radiation exactly where you want it. Targeting cancer? The beam is sharper than any scalpel.

While it has been proven to work, practical uses - like performing surgery without having to cut the patient open - are likely still years off.

Tech News

  • Apple's M3 CPU is expected to be announced today. (WCCFtech)

It probably won't be a lot faster than the M2, but if it at least supports more memory it will be a big improvement.

With all variants of Apple's CPUs the memory is soldered onto the CPU module. You can't upgrade it, ever. So if you don't configure enough RAM in your new Mac you've just bought some very expensive e-waste. And with current the M1 iMac you can't configure enough RAM. 16GB is all you can have.

(I have 64GB in my budget HP laptop.)

  • Lenovo is set to release YAPALAT - yet another perfectly adequate large Android tablet. (Notebook Check)

The Tab M11 has a definitely mid-tier but not awful CPU with two A75 and six A55 cores, a roughly 1920x1200 screen, and up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

Make that screen anywhere from 7" to 9" rather than 11" - keeping the same resolution - and I'll buy three of them.

  • Apropos of nothing, I kind of had the impression that the block of land my house is on had no two sides parallel.

Looking at the subdivision plan again after eighteen months I was reminded that this is not true at all. The land is rectangular, but the house is at an angle.

This may or may not become relevant in the near future.

A group of leading American scientists has unveiled a new “Air Vax” which uses airborne aerosols to deliver mRNA vaccines straight into people’s lungs.
The scientists developed the “Air Vax” to combat vaccine hesitancy as the new method bypasses the need for injections as it can be pumped into the air and used to vaccinate large crowds of people at once via the air they are breathing.

This isn't likely to start a fresh conspiracy theory, not at all.

A "minor" stroke risk.

The models runs have stabilized. Nov 1 is likely going to be our first frost date, here. This is perfectly "normal", splitting the probability range right down the middle.

Current "normal" probability is non-vanishing chance of frost beings Oct. 17. Small, but significant. Near certainty of frost by Nov. 16.

We are going to split that right down the middle. Of course, it ain't happened yet, and anything could happen, but it is converging on "extremely normal" this year.

“It busts the budget because it’s taking on as a public expense what’s previously been a private cost,” said Josh Cowen, an education policy professor at Michigan State University.

So money taxed from working people and dedicated to education can only be spent a certain, approved places.

134 Our "charming" little South Carolina burg is being pummeled and paved over with new development at a an unsustainable rate. The aging infrastructure -- roads and traffic, schools, hospitals, utilities -- all throttled an groaning from the influx of blue-state people and new subdivisions. The current mayor up for re-election is a liberal black woman who seems to have cozied nicely up to the developers, and has the politically uxorious city council in her pocket. Meanwhile the oblivious blue-state emigres mainly think she's a darling for her lavish holiday decorations in the town square, and of course that she's a POC. Her opponent is a lifelong resident and retired successful businessman trying to draw attention to our collision course with reality.

135 Reflecting on the fruit fly thing: without knowing anything other than what was said above, my guess is that they are releasing fruit flies that have a dominant gene for sterility. This has been at least tested before. The sterile flies mate with the wild population, producing more sterile flies and eventually the flies die off.

Thing is, in such a large population, you can't assure that all flies are going to mate with the sterile ones. Eventually, the sterile ones die off and the wild population breeds up again.

When we moved to Schloss Hadrian in 2009, the town had a population of 810. It's now probably ten times that. It can react with certain heart medications, and it can have bad effects if you have certain other conditions, so there's at least an argument for saying "let's let doctors and pharmacists do their job and determine if this particular drug is safe for this particular person in this particular case"... but that would rely on our crooked lazy idiot class of Pill Priests actually not sucking.

175 There is good enough reason to be at least a little wary about taking ivermectin.

The trouble is this. My father and his grandfather's generation level owned a lot of land. Their grandchildren and great-grandchildren ain't so "in tune" with their forefathers' notions of this. Their eyes go Ka-ching, ka-ching and they sell the land.

A Houston lady had 40 acres of land in NW Harris County, passed down from her family. Instead of selling it off, she donated it to the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter for an apostolate. RIP Betty White.

217 With all variants of Apple's CPUs the memory is soldered onto the CPU module. You can't upgrade it, ever. So if you don't configure enough RAM in your new Mac you've just bought some very expensive e-waste. And with current the M1 iMac you can't configure enough RAM. 16GB is all you can have.
++++
Manufactured e-waste is a phenomenon of the very low-end and the high-end. The high end manufactured e-waste is almost an entirely an Apple/Microsoft phenomenon (outside of cell phones, which are virtually *all* e-waste the moment they're produced, since they are all essentially one-and-done devices with a limited service life).

Serious answer, but this may vary by state.

I believe legally you can place a covenant on the contract when you sell the land deed that specifies what can and cannot be done with the property. It may have a limit on the number of years it applies, but the buyer is bound to abide and I also believe it persists if they turn around and resell it.

Something like this went down a few years ago where I live. Developer bought up land that was formerly a recreation area and wanted to build homes. Couldn't. The dirt bag developer has multiple LLCs to hide his tracks so he tried to sell it between a few of them but couldn't shake the contract obligation that the land had to stay as green space.

Even zoning couldn't override it.

It obviously still requires a state agency that cares about enforcing the restrictions, and not turning a blind eye...

Posted by: reason at October 30, 2023 08:03 AM (lpgaA)

222 >> Aren't you in the Greenville area, publius?

Yep.

Just an example. Look up "Anderson Ridge Road". When I was a kid, my Daddy farmed a field on the near end of that to us, many moons ago.

They alllowed some high-density developments in that area. Houses as thick as weeds. Little two land roads around become congested and impassable.

Something has to be done, because you get into traffic deadlock situations. Two left turns waiting in opposite directions -- leads to a classic deadlock.

Again, the local politicians, their eyes going ka-ching over the tax revenue (not to mention under the table kick backs) approve this shit.

So, traffic, so bad, they have to fix something. Put I traffic lights at intersections, what 10 years ago were in the country, that allow traffic in only one direction, cause of the left turn deadlock situation.

That's bad, cause of time, so they have to widen the roads, put in left-turn lanes, and then take over some of the land to do so, what has done been sold.

Goats eat shrubs if at all possible, and only eat grass if there's nothing else, so they are great destroyers of landscaping. You need a sheep for lawn care.
