The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

That is an iconic photo of Israeli paratroopers at the newly liberated western wall of the Temple Mount, on which the Temple (Beit Hamikdash) stood. It was the second temple, built to replace the first, called Solomon's Temple which was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 BCE. The second Temple was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE, concurrent with the massacre of many Jews, and the beginning of the Diaspora...the flight of Jews from conquered Israel into the rest of the world.

That photograph is symbolic of the creation of the modern state of Israel, which in the span of six days in June of 1967, in response to a three-front war, expanded from an essentially indefensible strip of land along the Mediterranean to a large part of historical Israel. That state was created in part as a culmination of the political effort spearheaded by Theodore Herzl known as Zionism, and in part as a response to the Holocaust...the unimaginable destruction of 6,000,000 Jews in Europe.

But that wasn't the first time Jews had been murdered simply because they were Jews. That has been happening for more than 2,000 years. The Alexandrian riots in Egypt? 38 CE! European Jewry has been the target of countless riots and pogroms and wholesale slaughter, even before Hitler's final solution. And the Jews who remained in the Middle East were similarly persecuted.

Remember the Mumbai terrorist attacks in 2008? Those terrorists sought out the few Jews in that city and murdered six of them, including a Rabbi and his pregnant wife. In a country with more than one billion people, the terrorists looked for some of the 4,000 Jews!

Whatever the cause of this rabid and frankly insane drive to destroy Jews and Judaism, Israel is the lodestone of world Jewry, where we control our own destiny, where we can be comparatively safe, where we are not "other." That Israel is surrounded by enemies is not new to world Jewry. We have been surrounded our entire existence, but Israel is ours, and we are not beholden to anyone or anything. And look what Israel has created out of nothing! The country is a vibrant liberal democracy, a technological marvel, a social melting pot that draws people from around the world, and a bastion of Western thought holding back the savagery of backward cultures throughout the rest of the Middle East.

The military dominance of Israel was purchased with the blood of thousands of Israelis, lost in countless wars and military actions, and as many terrorist attacks perpetrated by its neighbors and by countries and terrorist organizations thousands of miles from Israel. The war against these heirs to Hitler and his Holocaust is never-ending, but there was a sense that Israel would always prevail...that the bloodthirsty haters of Jews and Judaism could be kept at bay with military might, technological prowess, and most of all a sense of unity of purpose; that all Israelis were in it together, that whatever their differences they would unite against the common enemy.

On Saturday that failed.

Whatever the reasons: hubris, arrogance, over-reliance on technology, incompetence, politics...the enemies of Israel finally succeeded in destroying the aura of invincibility that Israel has created. The vaunted Israeli army failed. The technology failed. The famous intelligence services failed.

If there can be anything good to come out of this horror, it will be an examination of all of these failures and a renewed commitment to the defense of Israel and Jewry. But that must also come with a sea change in the attitude of Israel towards the rest of the world. No longer can Israel afford the luxury of paying attention to the world's disapprobation when it confronts its enemies. No longer can Israel allow the existence of terrorist organizations on its borders, and if that means a world-wide media barrage of criticism and vitriol, then so be it. The lives of Jews are more important than the approval of newspaper editors ensconced in their high towers, safe from the guns and knives of savages intent upon their destruction.

And more important; the lives of Israeli soldiers are more important than the lives of their enemies. The rules of engagement for which Israel is famous must be relaxed. Israel's enemies use every evil construct imaginable to protect themselves from Israel's might: hostages, their own wives, children, schools, mosques, hospitals...all are shields from behind which these cowards attack. Israel must turn that on its head, and show the world that the death of a child being used as a shield is the fault of the coward behind the child, not the soldier who is defending his country from destruction.

And...sadly...Israel must not be swayed by the threat to the hostages. Yes, that is easy to write, safe in America. But the rules must change if Israel is to survive.

America can show Israel at least one thing that can be changed to prevent the unimaginable from happening again. In most of America we have a robust civilian culture of self defense, with guns a part of our lives. Israel does not have that culture, and the sad result of an unarmed population can be seen across southern Israel.

But...Israel will prevail. Of that I am confident. Judaism has survived more than 2,000 years of savagery directed at us, and we will survive this. We are unbelievably lucky and blessed that Israel exists, and it will take more than 7th century fanatics to destroy the oldest country on earth.

There are several ways to establish such a corridor to break the blockade:
1. Israel agrees to it
2. The WHO defeats Israel militarily and opens it themselves
3. Egypt agrees to it
4. The WHO defeats Egypt militarily and opens it themselves
5. The corridor is opened from the sea, defended and enforced with naval power. In real terms. this means the US agrees to it.

Of all those options, options 3 and 5 are the most likely, but none are likely at this moment in time.

Hamas' rockets are not sophisticated smart bombs, and they are not competently operated. They have a lot of them - enough to have overwhelmed Iron Dome - but they have little control and the damage from friendly fire has always been fairly high.

Total war is historically unusual because it is very, very hard to achieve. Only existential war - and most war isn't - rises to that level. Total war is not just one-sided or a military affair. Total war is just that: total. Everything is committed to the struggle, homefront and abroad. Nothing exists outside the war and everyone is a combatant and everything is a legitimate military target. Unconditional surrender requires unconditional victory, and unconditional victory requires unconditional and total commitment at all levels over significant periods of time. Most war does not rise to that level.

This war in Israel *is* existential and total. Even if the Israelis don't treat it as such, its enemy does and so it is.

Hamas looked at things like the exchange of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit for 1,027 Palestinian prisoners in 2011, and concluded that you could control Israeli behavior by taking hostages.

In retrospect, that was an error by Israel.

He was the second man on a hamas tunnel cleaning crew. He hasn’t told me all of it but what I know is is enough to give anyone nightmares. This is a real worry and I think you're right. "Sympathy attacks" are fairly common and we are, after all, the Great Satan. We also have an open southern border and G-d knows how many terrorists or their agents have poured over it. It could easily be several thousands or tens of thousands, now distributed throughout the country.

I think that what will come out is that Israel had an agent in the senior levels of Hamas who provided accurate information about Hamas attacks for years (thereby killing a lot of Hamas agents), who was doing that specifically to set things up for October 7th.

Who knows what is true and what isn't.

The larger point is when you are distracted by Ukraine (in whatever way that means), you are not focused on what you should be focused on.

This is a big cultural problem for the West. When you get distracted by liberal things (DEI, Gaia, etc.) you are not focused on those things that your organization should be focused on.

Was Israel distracted by Ukraine - I don't know. But I suspect many in Israel were - because many here in our country are.

US support for Israel is based on interests, much like our support for Saudi Arabia. We've been supporting the Saudi Arabian conflict against Iran in Yemen for a long time because they're key to the US position in the Middle East and the US dollar.

This is a real worry and I think you're right. "Sympathy attacks" are fairly common and we are, after all, the Great Satan. It's taken South Africa more than 30 years to degrade the infrastructure to the point that it is collapsing, but that is because they didn't start actively tearing it down until recently.

311 I first visited Israel in the early eighties. It was close enough on the heels of the Nahariya attack that all parents taught their children from a VERY young age to not cry when afraid. It was not that they weren't affectionate and loving. They just wanted to make sure that their children wouldn't cry if it came to be a matter of life or death. The last time I visited Israel, which was the late 1990s, the people I knew still seemed to teach their children the same survival skill. I'm not sure it is still being done.

I will try to answer this question sincerely.

It comes down to the concept of "Palestine" as two locations: the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. Both are deemed "Palestinian Territory." The Israelis surrendered Gaza to the "Palestinians" and it is indeed its own state (its own state that elected Hamas to lead it in an overwhelming majority), but that state is *not* "Palestine" and has never been considered such by them. It is merely a down payment on the *real* "two-state solution."

That real solution consists of "Palestinian" control of both Gaza and the "West Bank" territory under a unified government connected with a free-passage corridor through Israel, and that government and its territory is formally recognized by Israel and the wider "International Community." That new state separated by Israel Proper contains no Israelis. The entire "West Bank" territory must be evacuated and turned over to "Palestinians" and their terror government.

It wasn't that long ago that any inexplicable event involving violence or computer disruption was accredited to Mossad because it was that good. Yes, the rest of Israel's intelligence community needs to take a long, hard look at their operations once this latest deal is cleaned up. But Mossad especially. This past Sunday, my church refused to say anything about what happened in Israel. They were quick to denounce Russia when they invaded Ukraine, and spent weeks gathering money and goods to send there. But crickets on Sunday. Needless to say, we are looking for a new church.

Watch what they put out on TV for their children to watch - teaching that Jews want to eat their flesh and drink their blood, etc. Watch at their demonstrations the very young children gleefully cheering to chants of death to Israel - death to Jews, etc. To them, as has been said, Jews are vermin to be eradicated. Do you hold a funeral for a rat or cockroach that you kill and mourn their deaths? Sick and evil.

As a history buff I can say that the Jewry throughout the middle ages were slaughtered periodically everywhere, and when they were allowed to live they were often expelled or extorted of all of their money. They have always been badly treated.

How do you slaughter civilians and behead babies? How do you go to bed the next day? How do you look at your own children? Call me naive, but I am confused by how humans do horrific things to other humans. This is not to say that bombing innocent civilians in Gaza is great or acceptable. There is no winner in war, no matter what the military-industrial claims. Only innocent civilians dead!
