I never did that. I had scholarships but not free rides and the first two years a big chunk came out of her inheritance from her mother. I always did my own laundry even when at home before going back to school. It was mostly symbolic but important. After that I had additional scholarships and in grad school loans i took out myself.

59 I'm at the office much earlier than normal because I had to go to Janesville, WI today. I refuse to drive in Janesville, it is the stupidest place I have ever driven in my life and the drivers are bad and combative. So I take a regional bus then the city bus and THAT was stupid.
Some asshole in a luxury SUV pulled right out in front of the city bus I was on, making eye contact with the driver, genuinely DARING the bus to hit him. Lurched totally to a panic stop and sent passengers flying into the aisles. A lot of the Janesville passengers are from the developmentally disabled work-center, Kandu, so this clown almost trashed a bus full of retarded adults trying to work productively.
The behavior in that burg is ridiculous. I would never live in Janesville and I did cable disconnects there. Well, maybe if I was given a choice between Chicago and Janesville I might do Janesville but otherwise no way. Fuck all those people it's an obnoxious place.

My strategery with laundry was wear every single piece of clothing I had. When I ran out, it was time for laundry. I could go a few weeks easy.

Kinda related and this provoked memories of it. Dude in my fraternity never washed his sheets. Like literally never. He went an entire year without washing or changing sheets. It was a weird source of pride for him. His brother on the other hand (actual brother not fraternity brother) was the biggest neat freak you ever met. Goes to show, nature vs nurture, is all one big crapshoot.

Yep...

It was a sore spot for my "ex". Her goal in life was to have kids. We did, she was great at it.

However, when the time came for them to "spread their wings", she lost her mind (figuratively...I think). When the oldest moved away to start his career, she blamed me for encouraging him to "go west young man".

The Spare Heir, she found a way to keep him home, and go to college in WNY. He needed to go away, and being at home almost killed him (the reasons for that are a whole different story).

Anyway, it was a material piece in what drove a wedge between us...ultimately ending in her handing me divorce papers.

One of my cats has been skittish since birth and has avoided being tracked down and picked up by instinct has suddenly decided that he will come up if I am in bed which I used to treat his hot spots with vaseline when needed. only about 10 years for him. He's the most mild mannered cat but since he became the oldest male he inherited the outer perimeter enforcer and guards the door area, or the stairs if all the cats are upstairs. I think there is a set point for the flight reflex and it can decline over time. My girl cat hangs out with all the repair men and even follows them up a ladder into the attic with no fear.

84 I have to admit when the kids had all left, I was at sea for a time. I had at least one child in the house for over 30 years and as I had reared some of them all by myself, I was pretty attached to the 'child centered Dad' role.

But, I got over it and learned how to not cook for an army. I worked hard to raise independent, hard-working, Christ centered children. But when they went and did it, it did give me a pang or two.

106 Ex-ex's dad has been diagnosed with stage IV laryngeal cancer. He had a trach put in last week, and it will be permanent, since his trachea will be closed off once he has surgery.

Total laryngectomy and lymph nodes removed from both sides of neck (one lymph node of left side has cancer) has been recommended, in addition to radiation treatment after the surgery. Needless to say, he'll never be able to breathe through his mouth or nose again.

Prayers would be very much appreciated. This cancer is aggressive, and it's 50-50 if he agrees to the treatment plan. Considering how stubborn he is, this may be the last time we see him when we head down to Georgia on the 20th.

Kind of a non-sequitur, but when my Dad retired he got bored really quickly ,and became a school bus driver.

First day on the job a six-year-old boy trudges up the steps, sees Dad, and says, "Wow! you are old!"

Dad says, "How old do you think I am?"

Boy says, "I dunno, 40?"

Dad shakes the kid's hand and says, "I'll take it."

I miss my Dad.

Baby brother almost went over the wall at basic training, but he imagined Dad's "Disappointed Face." And he stuck it out. Became a paratrooper, served in Iraq (thrice), and became a Black Hawk pilot.
